On a perfect late October afternoon just two mins out of town on The Plains Road I ventured to the Boxwood Winery to meet its General Manager Deborah Vaccaro. With the last grapes harvested, Deborah reflected on the season and the wines the team are now processing in their 16th year of production. We hear how, having purchased the farm in 2001, John Kent & Rita Cooke began planting the vineyard in 2003. The Boxwood sustainable vineyards occupy 26.5 acres of the historic landmark farm, and are planted with traditional Bordeaux varietals, predominately Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc & Sauvignon Blanc, Visitors can enjoying tasting and food samples throughout the year and a popular Wine Club offers special events and discounts to its members. Deborah explains the process of wine making from vine to bottle and how the art of establishing a competitive cellar relies on a French wine consultant and a viticulture consultant to maintain perfection.
