We discuss a “crisis of confidence.” What does that mean?

Sometimes, we move forward in our careers but have nagging doubts about our choices, our capabilities, and what we should do next. During this conversation, we ask if the problem is about your capabilities (competence), your own self-confidence, the courage to take action, or a combination of all of the above.

Women often are held back in their careers by a crisis of confidence. There is a great article in The Atlantic that explores the confidence gap in depth. There is also an article from HBR that expands upon some recent studies about women, confidence, competence, and consequently, courage.

During the session, we discuss:

  • The debate between confidence vs competence and added courage
  • The difference between confidence and courage and, depending on what your thoughts are, which applies to your situation
  • A curve that illustrates your work experience you start to when it’s a good time to consider a new job
  • Discuss what it means to be in a danger zone – you mastered your job and desperately need to go to the next level
  • How do you know it’s a good time to consider making a change
  • The dangers of staying in a job that you have mastered for too long

What s a fluid career?

Dana Theus has been observing a new career trend  fluid careers. The average tenure of a job for professionals is 3.5 years. This means that someone could have up to 10-12 jobs in a lifetime and possibly 2-3+ careers. It is freeing, in that it gives people more control to design more work-life balance in their career over time, and anxiety-producing as it can feel less stable if one defines success as a job that lasts at least 10 years. This fluid employment trend takes into account the growth in both entrepreneurship and the Gig Economy, reductions in employee tenure, increases in employee dissatisfaction and increases in employee turnover.
