The growth of domestic tourism in China and changes in cultural trends are driving rapid development, affecting heritage protection and management throughout the country.
In today’s episode, preservation architect Kuanghan Li discusses working with modern residents living in historic Chinese buildings, how rapid modernization is changing cultural tourism, and the challenges facing heritage sites in China. She also dives into the importance of involving local stakeholders to ensure sustainable protection for heritage sites and the need for creative solutions to include women in heritage preservation.
Ms. Kuanghan Li is a preservation architect based in Beijing and a current Ph.D. candidate at Peking University in cultural heritage conservation. For the past ten years, Han has directed our China Heritage Program, working with sites that range from historic urban and rural settlements to ancient Buddhist grottoes. Han has been integral to the success of our past and current initiatives, and we salute her many contributions to building a world that is truly beyond monuments.
