3:27

little things like to call the after

3:29

party. This is the show After the

3:31

show, the party after the party, the

3:34

bridge to get if one full of

3:36

sit a disgrace and to the other

3:38

the back yard to dig into the

3:40

dirt. On this episode we're talking about

3:43

our new story on Garth Brooks sources

3:45

that we used for Garth Brooks episode

3:47

was helpless uncover this crazy theory of

3:49

of the connection between Girth Tor route

3:51

and missing persons and of course your

3:54

voice mails text. dmz more and

3:56

as always is whole lotta

3:58

rosie are discouraged less You know

4:14

by now, of course, that I am not

4:16

serious. Garth

4:24

Brooks is not a serial killer. But

4:28

a large portion of the internet is

4:30

obsessed with the fact that he could

4:32

be a serial killer, which got me

4:34

wondering about the public's, ours really, our

4:36

obsession with true crime. True

4:39

crime, of course, is a big part of what we

4:41

do here. We have a broader

4:43

definition the most, sure, but still the

4:46

world's fascination with serial killers and my

4:48

own fascination with the criminal element. I've

4:52

often wondered where this comes

4:54

from, where this fascination comes

4:56

from. Why are we collectively

4:58

obsessed with true crime?

5:01

Serial killers in particular, bad

5:03

people. Now obviously I

5:05

can't speak for the world at

5:07

large, but my thinking

5:09

is that our collective obsession with

5:12

serial killers is derived in part

5:14

from the fact that these people,

5:16

these murderers, they do

5:18

the unthinkable and their actions,

5:20

they force us to think about these heinous

5:22

acts and there's a visceral fear that goes

5:24

along with putting yourself in the shoes of

5:26

the victims who do come face

5:28

to face with Garth Brooks, excuse me, Ed

5:31

Kemper and the like. But when it comes

5:33

to my obsession with the criminal element at

5:35

large, my fascination with the

5:37

musicians and artists of the world

5:40

whose transgressions aren't just minor sins,

5:42

but mortal sins, felonies. It's

5:46

hard for me to come up with an answer

5:48

as to why I've been so fascinated my whole

5:50

life basically since I started reading novels in

5:52

the sixth grade or thereabouts.

5:54

I gravitated towards crime. I

5:57

still do of course. It's hard for me to

5:59

create. anything that isn't related to crime

6:01

in some way. You know,

6:03

when I was making music in punk bands, hardcore

6:05

bands, and later as a singer-songwriter, I often wrote

6:07

songs from the perspective of a criminal, and

6:10

I obsessed over murder ballads and

6:12

old weird Americana, all the

6:14

bad, bad men, all those stories that we covered in

6:17

the Pigpen episode of Disgrace Man. Of

6:20

course, like most of you, I'm

6:22

nothing like these men. I live

6:24

a fairly conventional life. I

6:26

live on a fairly normal-looking street. I wake

6:28

up with similar hopes, dreams, aspirations, and fears,

6:31

as you all do. So

6:33

then why am I currently pouring myself

6:35

into books about Boston's Chinatown drug dealers

6:37

and early 20th century American anarchists and

6:39

the coke-fueled 86 Mets, instead

6:42

of spending more time watching the Boston Bruins

6:45

and the playoffs and getting excited about my

6:47

summer break that's coming up? And

6:49

I've been thinking about this all morning, knowing

6:52

that I'm coming into the booth to record

6:54

this episode on the heels of this Garth

6:56

Brooks serial killer nonsense. I've

6:59

been thinking about why, why this is, why am I

7:01

fascinated with crime? Truman

7:03

Capote's In Cold Blood, Mario Puzo's

7:05

The Godfather, everything by James

7:08

Elroy, why? Perhaps

7:10

it has something to do with the line,

7:13

the line that Springsteen talks about on Nebraska.

7:16

Quote, there's winners and losers and don't get

7:19

caught on the wrong side of that line.

7:21

Now that lyric from that song Atlantic City,

7:25

it always resonated with me, New Jersey or

7:27

Philly, I knew no chicken men growing up,

7:29

but there's a universal element in that lyric,

7:31

the wrong side of that line. And

7:34

like I said, I didn't know any chicken men, but I knew plenty

7:37

of guys who ended up on the wrong side of that line. And

7:39

not just passing acquaintances, like

7:41

the prison break party I found myself at

7:44

in high school with recently escaped felons, where

7:46

we watched news of their prison break on

7:48

the 11 o'clock news, the story that I

7:50

told when I went on my favorite murder.

7:52

Now I didn't know those guys really, but

7:54

I was in their orbit, of course. The

7:57

Important part of what I'm trying to say though, is that I did

7:59

know other guys. Who. Are no new

8:01

them? Well guys you cross that line and

8:03

he was like one minute. They're. Part

8:05

of our our lives smoke grass listening to

8:07

music fucking off and then they're robbing little

8:09

old ladies. Can we get A A Tmz

8:11

being sent away? The conquered M C I.

8:14

Crossing. That line then and

8:16

now. it seems like a very

8:19

easy distance to traverse. And

8:21

I think that's why I'm so fascinated by.

8:24

That split. That. Slip

8:26

from a normal life to

8:28

criminalize. That. Is not

8:31

that hard for some to make. Especially.

8:33

She grew up poor. he grew up

8:35

desperate. Or. You just don't

8:37

have options or imagination. I

8:39

never lacked in imagination, and neither do the

8:41

millions of internet trolls out there who imagined

8:44

Garth Brooks to be a serial killer. Is

8:46

it so hard to imagine? Really? Especially like

8:48

I say with that line is so easy

8:50

to cross. I don't think so. Which

8:52

musicians? others and Garth Brooks creep you

8:54

out and make you question their modus?

8:57

Which rock stars? Which country stars? Which

8:59

hip hop stars? Any musicians at all?

9:01

Which ones fits the serial killer profile

9:03

for you? Is Snoop Dogg to be

9:05

a real life pimp which he was,

9:07

Doesn't stand a reason that Eminem can

9:09

be stalking bodies. Let's have some stupid

9:11

fun and let me know which artist

9:13

you'd be surprised to find out was

9:15

13:01

we used for this week's episode on

13:03

Garth Brooks First, when it comes to

13:05

the true story of guess unprecedented rise

13:07

to fame. To me, if you're not

13:09

a Garth Brooks fan either, know much

13:11

about him. He's a cities where these

13:14

commercial country artists who got famous and

13:16

York have dominated the charts for a

13:18

while. There's so much more to his

13:20

rise to his fame and most of

13:22

what we got we got from a

13:24

book called the Garth Factor the Career

13:26

behind Country's Biggest Boom by Patsy Bill.

13:28

Cox, Patsy, Rest in Peace operate

13:31

the autobiographies of artist like Loretta

13:33

Lynn, Tanya Tucker when on a

13:35

Judd isn't Pat Benatar and she

13:37

worked for national base publicity from

13:40

a channel Pr for Capitol Records

13:42

were Garth was a major artists

13:44

but. she heard the absurd

13:46

you know that it's anything but

13:48

a typical episode a disgrace and

13:51

the inspiration of course being this

13:53

incredible joke or started by comedian

13:55

tom segura his wife christine us

13:57

christina peasant skis i'm saying that

13:59

wrong incorrectly, I apologize Christina. It's

14:02

a joke about Garth being so

14:04

weird and so awkward and

14:06

so strange that he maybe, just

14:08

maybe, was a serial killer. It's

14:10

a fucked up joke. I know,

14:12

I get it, but it's hysterical.

14:15

It's incredibly compelling. A

14:17

serial killer who's struck while he

14:19

toured, evidenced by the

14:21

number of people who went missing,

14:23

along Garth's seemingly eternal touring route.

14:26

We fully committed to this joke by chasing down the data

14:28

and by that I mean we looked at Garth's tour

14:31

dates, year after year, painstakingly plotted each

14:33

and every date against missing person's data in each

14:35

city where he performed. And I'm talking about a

14:37

lot of data, dates upon dates upon dates, cities

14:39

upon cities, year upon year. Most

14:41

of the time this research led to

14:43

nothing, but sometimes it gave us something,

14:45

a nugget, a disappearance that he could

14:47

easily tie to Garth Brooks

14:50

being in town and then doing this

14:52

legwork and helped us build this dramatic

14:54

case that Tom Segura's joke had legs

14:56

for real and it does, excuse

14:59

me, the joke does at least. But

15:01

the actual insinuation that Garth is some kind

15:04

of serial killer obviously is not true. All

15:06

right, don't come at me. You know

15:08

that. You know I'm having fun here. And

15:10

you know, I understand this is not

15:13

a novel idea. This is Tom Segura's

15:15

idea. We just, we

15:18

like to think that we took it somewhere else and in

15:20

the way we do things here, disgrace him. All

15:23

right, a major source of inspiration in

15:25

making this episode, Michael Jackson's Thriller video.

15:27

Why? Do you know? We didn't include

15:29

this in our list of sources on the website because as

15:32

I said, it's more a source

15:34

of inspiration than anything else. But the

15:36

Thriller video was a major creative device

15:38

for us in making this episode. And

15:40

if you think you know what it

15:42

is, you got to let me know

15:45

617-906-6638 voicemail and text. That's how you

15:47

get at me. Just like this person

15:49

in the 920. Listening

16:00

to Public Enemy

16:03

requesting Rage Against

16:05

The Machine. Or

16:08

not, you're thanks to the call. Ah

16:10

yeah, region some scenes. perhaps someday someday.

16:13

We just had Public Enemy though since

16:15

can be a mess but I did.

16:18

16:20

16:22

had from last week's after party.

16:24

Whose agrees? folk? Singers.

16:26

For musicians, folk song writers, folk artists

16:28

were in and out and I was

16:30

talking about beyond just the genre. ah

16:32

like you know guy with an acoustic

16:35

16:37

new poorest of my time I guess

16:39

16:43

17:14

It's a Dan electro Anyway,

18:21

I'm gonna um Gonna

18:23

get back to work. I'll practice you later 4

18:27

1 2 I played that voicemail because it's fucking ridiculous. I have

18:30

no idea what you're talking about 4 1 2 I

18:33

don't know who you are. Are you a friend of

18:35

mine that I just don't recognize your voice and The

18:38

answer to a question that I

18:40

cannot recall seems to be Dan

18:42

electro, which is a guitar, of course

18:46

But you know call back 4 1 2

18:48

and let me know what the hell it is You're talking about 6 1 7 9 0 6 6 6

18:50

3 8 hit me up voicemail and text Let's

18:55

do a couple texts here as well while I

18:57

got you 3

18:59

1 0 writes and how about ice tees banned body

19:01

count? They deserve a shout in

19:03

any discussion about rap metal between Slayer public

19:05

enemy. I think he

19:07

means anthrax and public enemy And

19:09

you know what you're right 3 1 0 I

19:13

was gonna talk about body count, but I just there's

19:15

only so much you could talk about in that board

19:17

All right 7 7 5 writes and hey Jake

19:19

on the folk artist front the Gen X folk

19:22

artist is Todd Snyder this one

19:24

is actual folk music proper, but he's on

19:26

point and truly funny He offers that spoonful

19:28

of sugar for the medicine He's dishing out

19:30

check them out if you haven't good place

19:32

to start is his live album near truths

19:34

and hotel rooms But check out songs for

19:36

the daily planet for a dose of early

19:38

90s. What's going on vibes? You

19:41

know, I've I'm pretty sure seen Todd Snyder

19:43

before perhaps played with him in a

19:46

galaxy far far away, however you

19:48

say and I But

19:51

but still I don't know his music that well

19:53

And I think I was just reading about how

19:55

Todd Snyder was super critical of Garth

19:57

Brooks So that kind of ties it all together

20:00

here. 617-906-6638 voicemail

20:02

and text hit me up. Let me

20:04

know. Answer to my question from earlier

20:06
