Hey, I'm Ryan Reynolds. Recently, I asked
0:02
Mint Mobile's legal team if big wireless
0:04
companies are allowed to raise prices due
0:06
to inflation. They said yes. And then
0:09
when I asked if raising prices technically
0:11
violates those onerous two-year contracts, they said,
0:13
what the f*** are you talking about,
0:15
you insane Hollywood a*****e? So to
0:17
recap, we're cutting the price of Mint Unlimited from $30 a
0:19
month to just $15 a month. Give
0:22
it a try at mintmobile.com/switch. $45
0:25
up front for three months plus taxes and fees. Promote for new
0:27
customers for limited time. Unlimited more than 40 gigabytes per month. Mint
0:29

0:57
jewelry gift for any occasion.
0:59
bluenile.com That's
1:29
the name I've noted. Yes. Yeah,
1:58
it's Big Mates and Pro Rants. wrestling. But
2:01
can you think of another WW1 that is
2:03
as cursed as the Stinger one? Yeah, well,
2:05
none of those awful WWE runs compared to
2:07
the guy we're here to talk about today.
2:09
And that guy is the one, the only,
2:11
the release on the 3rd of May, 2024,
2:13
at the time of writing, Big
2:18
Gable Stevenson, a complete
2:20
disaster in WWE from
2:22
start to finish. Fortunately, one of the two got
2:24
very little air time. But
2:27
when you bring a guy in and you compare
2:29
him to Kurt Angle from day one, I
2:31
think the return on investment has to go down
2:33
as one of the lowest in WWE history. Yeah,
2:36
I suppose you've got to try and balance this
2:38
out. Like he was rubbish, but
2:40
at the same time, they sort of saddled him straight
2:42
out of the gate and built
2:44
him up so much that it was
2:46
almost impossible to live up to expectations.
2:48
Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you
2:50
cannot compare someone to the greatest rookie in
2:52
pro wrestling history from day one and then
2:55
expect them to live up to that. Brock
2:57
Lesnar was another comparison and we've seen that
2:59
with like Parker Broujoux as well. Yeah. Could
3:02
be another example. What was his character called?
3:04
Harlan down in NXT. From
3:06
day one, he had the Brock Lesnar comparison,
3:08
Gable Steeveson over here because he's an Olympic
3:10
gold medal winner, but it's a long convoluted
3:12
saga on what we're going to dig into.
3:15
Yeah, exactly. WWE have been very excited about
3:17
this guy and watch keeping an eye on
3:19
him for a long old time before they
3:21
unveiled him, of course. He was
3:23
someone that they had a lot of attention,
3:25
according to the Observer, around for a few
3:28
years before they officially signed
3:30
him. He actually opened up and said himself,
3:32
like he'd love to get into, well,
3:34
he was, he referenced mixed martial arts, but
3:37
also pro wrestling as well. He said, it's
3:39
a dream I've had since I was
3:41
a kid to become a professional wrestling
3:43
superstar. Then obviously, he wins
3:47
gold, the 125 kilogram
3:49
category of wrestling at the Tokyo
3:51
Olympics. Again, the teasers
3:53
jumping to either pro wrestling or to
3:55
MMA. And then SummerSlam
3:57
2021 rolls around and they have the
4:00
big fanfare and they bring him out
4:02
and they basically explicitly tell the fans,
4:04
this is a guy to watch. Yeah, this
4:07
is the next angle, the next next
4:09
big thing, Brock Lesnar, like he
4:11
was someone that they put their
4:13
full weight behind. And
4:16
it was almost at that point you were like,
4:18
well, it's make or break time already. Yeah,
4:21
this is it. Like it's that
4:23
weight of expectation, especially if he was so young when he
4:25
signed, I think he was 20, 21 years old. Yeah.
4:28
That is a lot. Like, look, you
4:30
can be the most impressive physical specimen
4:32
in the world. You can be this
4:35
prodigious amateur wrestler as he
4:37
was. But even
4:39
from that first appearance in Summerslam, it
4:42
was pretty clear that the Kurt
4:44
Angle comparison was completely insane. Because the thing
4:46
about Kurt Angle wasn't just that he was
4:48
the successful Olympian, which obviously Gabriel Stiefson. It
4:51
wasn't that he was just this incredible
4:53
amateur wrestling, which obviously, Gabriel Stiefson was.
4:57
It was that he had this
4:59
unique charisma about him. Straight, what,
5:01
like immediately Kurt Angle picked this
5:03
sport up so quickly. He
5:05
had the intangibles, he had the press, he
5:07
knew when to make himself look like a
5:09
killer and when to make himself look like
5:11
a complete buffoon. He had such a great
5:14
balance, effectively from day one. And kind of
5:16
as Gabriel Stiefson stood there in the middle
5:18
of the ring, just exuding
5:20
none of these qualities, I think it was
5:22
an early warning sign for Summerslam. I agree.
5:24
I think in terms of like, you know,
5:26
fans don't always like being
5:28
told, here's this person, cheer for them.
5:31
Yeah. They sort of exploited that
5:33
with the Kurt Angle debut of just like, you guys
5:35
must be so happy that I'm here. And they're like,
5:37
who the hell are you? I immediately
5:39
don't like you. And it worked so well for
5:41
him. He was such a brilliant,
5:44
yeah, full, but also phenomenal athlete as
5:46
well. Like, it's sort of part of
5:48
what WWE does now, just generally. Their
5:50
next in line thing is, you are
5:52
an amazing athlete, but can you do
5:54
the other side of pro wrestling as
5:56
well? Can we, you know, mould you
5:58
into being able to do that? to
6:00
wrestle properly rather than just be a
6:02
former gymnast or a former American football
6:04
star or whatever it may be. But
6:07
especially in WWE, that comes with a lot
6:09
of other things that come with it. The
6:11
charisma is a large, large part of it,
6:13
that presence, that aura, that just
6:16
thing to make people engage
6:18
with you more than, wow, that was impressive. And
6:21
I don't know, I think the moment you saw him, you
6:23
were like, has he got it?
6:26
And then they went full throttle. Oh yeah. With
6:29
all of this, including this, like
6:31
how can we forget this, right? The 2021
6:33
WWE Draft, a couple of weeks,
6:36
maybe a couple of months after they signed Gable Steveson,
6:38
they drafted him to Raw. Yes.
6:40
By all reports, he wasn't yet training full-time
6:42
in pro wrestling. I think he was training
6:44
with Mr. Kennedy for a while, but he
6:46
wasn't at the PC full-time, he was still
6:48
doing some amateur wrestling stuff. They
6:51
sent him to Raw in the draft. They sent him
6:53
ahead of people like, and you know, like
6:56
he was round six, right? It's not like
6:58
he was this high level picker or whatever.
7:01
But they literally picked him before Sami
7:03
Zayn and some other names. And
7:05
when you do that, what that does is
7:07
that creates further weight to their expectations. Because
7:10
when you draft someone to a show, you
7:12
expect to see them on that show. So
7:14
what WWE did when they drafted into Raw
7:16
was telling you, hey, you might be seeing
7:18
Gable Steveson a little sooner than
7:21
you might think. Yeah, the clock started at that point, didn't
7:23
it? Oh, as they drafted him, then he must be
7:25
almost ready to start wrestling rather than, you
7:27
know, he's someone we really see potential in.
7:29
And we want to showcase that we're really
7:32
chuffed to have signed this person. But
7:35
we're going to go away. And when he's ready,
7:37
a bit like J. Cargill, when he's ready,
7:39
we'll bring him out properly. Sure. We've
7:42
seen J. Cargill again. So we did, to
7:44
be fair, like, you know, later,
7:47
going over into 2022, we did
7:50
see Gable Steveson again. He was at WrestleMania.
7:52
He was introduced by Stephanie McMahon, I believe
7:54
it was. And he did a suplex Kurt
7:56
Angle. No, not Kurt Angle. Good job, Gable.
7:58
I'm done with it again myself. They did
8:00
show me karanga later, we're gonna get to
8:02
that. They did indeed. Um, and you
8:04
know when you had that physical spot,
8:06
again it was like, okay, maybe we're
8:09
edging closer to something here, maybe we're
8:11
gonna see this Olympian, this
8:13
new Kurt Angle. But
8:15
again, watching these appearances, you don't wanna write
8:17
off someone that early in their career. The
8:19
thing is, you cannot teach charisma in pro
8:21
wrestling a lot of the time. It's either
8:24
in you or it isn't in you, and
8:26
in this case, again, not really
8:28
getting much. Yeah. In television. Chad Gable,
8:30
you know, he's probably, he's so strong, he
8:33
probably makes me look good throwing him around.
8:35
That wasn't the bar that he had to
8:37
clear. Yeah. It was how you follow that
8:39
up. And I don't think they
8:41
helped, as you alluded to there, by immediately,
8:44
the next time, I think it was the
8:46
next time we saw him anyway, having to
8:48
be there doing milk stuff with Kurt Angle.
8:50
Yeah, that was in December of 2022, so
8:52
it was the next time we saw him.
8:54
Gable Stuson appeared in WrestleMania in
8:56
April, when vanishing again for eight months. And
8:58
again, there are reasons for this, right?
9:01
Going away, amateur wrestling, all of that
9:03
stuff, I believe there was some confusion
9:05
about his participation in the new season,
9:07
he wasn't training full-time at the PC,
9:09
all of this. But it
9:12
was totally reasonable for fans to expect
9:14
this because WWE drafted him. They created
9:16
that way with expectations, and then they
9:18
literally had him and Kurt Angle, like
9:20
you said, standing right there. Hey,
9:25
Hey, I'm Ryan Reynolds. Recently, I asked
9:27
Mint Mobile's legal team if big wireless
9:29
companies are allowed to raise prices due
9:32
to inflation. They said yes. And then
9:34
when I asked if raising prices technically
9:36
violates those onerous two-year contracts, they said,
9:38
what the are you talking about, you
9:40
insane Hollywood ass. So to recap,
9:42
we're cutting the price of Mint Unlimited from $30 a month
9:44
to just $15 a month. Give
9:47
it a try at mintmobile.com/switch. $45
9:50
up front for three months plus taxes and fees, promo rate for new
9:52
customers for limited time. Unlimited more than 40 gigabytes per month, and that
9:54
slows. Full terms at mintmobile.com. Many of us have those stubborn
9:56
pounds that seem impossible to lose no matter
9:58
how good we are. eat or how
10:01
hard we work out. My solution is
10:35
to entertain. Airbnb allows me to do that. When I
10:37
was in California recently, I rented a house that had a great kitchen.
10:39
And when we were sitting around the table, we were all thinking, we're in
10:41
someone else's Your
10:44
home might be worth more than you think. Well,
11:09
it only got worse from there, really, because then
11:12
it was time for him to start appearing on
11:14
television. And it was
11:17
on my beloved NXT. It was
11:19
really weird as well, because he
11:21
suddenly shows up and he's advising
11:23
Eddie Thorpe against Damon Kemp. You
11:29
know what? That's difficult. It's real life brother. What?
11:32
Big Bob's team. So
11:34
that's happening. Okay. And
11:36
you think, well, regardless, and I will say this,
11:39
there was one moment where I thought he might
11:41
have something. There was some NXT
11:44
underground shenanigans and Gabrielle Stevenson was in and
11:46
around all of it. And
11:48
some dudes just rushed him and he suplexed
11:50
everyone in sight. And me
11:52
and Hamlet, to be fair, both said, I tell you
11:54
what, that looks awesome. If you can do more of
11:56
that sort of thing and maybe you give him a manager
11:58
to talk for it. him or whatever
12:00
and he has a great first match when
12:03
we see him out there on PLE then
12:06
maybe. Then
12:09
the great American bash happens. Oh
12:12
boy. Right, our opinions of Baron Corbin
12:14
have changed quite drastically I think it's fair to say
12:16
in recent. My opinions of Baron Corbin have gone up
12:18
and down like a yoyo over the years. But
12:22
it was almost impressive how he
12:24
got Corbin cheered. Like now
12:26
that's not weird because he's part of the
12:28
wolf dodge. Whoa whoa whoa whoa brilliant
12:31
tag team that they are but at the
12:33
time it was like right stick
12:35
anyone with Corbin and they'll get cheered
12:37
because it's Baron Corbin. Not
12:40
only was Corbin cheered the match was
12:42
a complete disaster and it
12:44
didn't even pop Gable Steveson over in the end.
12:47
So it achieved, it
12:50
didn't achieve nothing actually that's the lie. It
12:52
achieved getting heel Baron Corbin over. Yeah as
12:54
a baby face. It was so
12:56
wild. The thing about Baron Corbin is whether you
12:59
like him or you don't, whether you like his
13:01
work or you don't enjoy it whatever. He's
13:03
very good at his job. Oh absolutely. He is
13:06
excellent at his job right. He will make
13:08
himself a picky complete the food with dog food
13:10
and the bum ass Corbin gimmick and all that
13:12
stuff. He'll get pushed over by Rob Gronkowski
13:14
after Mojo rolling Niels behind him because he was
13:16
dressed as a king. He's
13:18
up for out basically. If it
13:20
serves the story, serves the situation Baron
13:23
Corbin will do it. He's
13:25
also very very good at just being a
13:27
heel, like a grinding down heel who is
13:30
purposefully not flashy apart from the end of
13:32
days and the Deep Six which are really
13:34
cool moves. But he's
13:36
not this flashy ass heel. He's not
13:38
playing for pops or anything like that.
13:40
He knows that his role there is
13:42
to make you like the other person
13:45
right. He is deliberately kind
13:47
of boring. He's a headlock in
13:49
human form. Exactly. And he's very very
13:51
good at that. Or he was before the wolf dogs. And
13:53
then Gable Steve... Oh my
13:55
god. I remember watching this going what's
13:58
happening? Further
14:01
your point. That guy's so dope. What
14:03
the hell's going on? I can't believe
14:05
it. To
14:07
further hammer home this point, this is not 2019
14:10
and 2018, right? People
14:13
don't bring beach balls to shows that
14:15
often anymore. People don't chant rogue CM
14:17
Punk while he's there, obviously. But
14:20
you know, people aren't holding shows hostage or whatever.
14:22
They aren't going to watch the AW instead. It's
14:25
that simple. Exactly. The WWE audience of
14:27
today is very responsive
14:30
to what the promotion wants them
14:32
to be responsive to. It's a
14:34
super-compliant crowd. And they
14:36
destroyed this match. Like it was, you know, the
14:39
peak Vince years when everyone was pissed off
14:41
with the product and Cesaro was jumping in
14:43
the crowd to rip beach balls apart. This
14:45
was quite the remarkable achievement. I'm sorry, that
14:47
guy's wearing an NXT t-shirt. He's
14:49
Mr. NXT and he's like, What are you
14:52
doing to my beloved brother? What is this?
14:54
What's going on, Sean? I can't
14:56
believe it. And across the board, you
14:58
go back and watch that match. And
15:00
yeah, like, for example, like, I will
15:03
say what you will about this platform, but the cage-minus
15:05
rating is one of the lowest of the years, right?
15:07
So it's clear that it's not something that people enjoyed.
15:09
You can say that's a little harsh, right?
15:11
On a fundamental level, it's not the
15:14
worst match of 20p and E3, right?
15:16
It's simply not. There are bigger Omni
15:18
shambles out there. You can go looking
15:20
for them. And there's one where a
15:22
guy, I guess, injected in his lily.
15:25
That's probably the worst match. I'm not going to name
15:27
the promotion, but that's probably the worst match of 2020,
15:29
right? But I
15:31
think it speaks again to the volume
15:33
of expectation and the delivery, like what
15:35
we got in return for those expectations.
15:38
I think the rating is almost kind
15:40
of warranted from that standpoint. But
15:42
things only get weirder for old
15:44
Gable as things progress.
15:46
By September last year, Dave Meltzer's
15:48
reporting that he's been removed from
15:51
the NXT roster, right? So
15:53
he's kind of gone missing again
15:55
after the Great American Bash, right?
15:57
He's not wrestling anymore, necessarily. Sean
16:00
Michaels later comes out and says, hey,
16:03
you'll be back, don't worry, it's just a scheduling
16:05
thing, it's just a scheduling thing, and we'll be
16:07
back, he's a busy guy, blah blah blah. And
16:09
there's all this speculation at the same time about
16:12
the Olympics and trials and him participating maybe in
16:14
those when they come around in April and maybe
16:16
he has to prep. But
16:18
then Gable Steveson re-emerges, it becomes 2024
16:20
this year, as
16:23
things tend to do on December 30th.
16:25
That calendar's where? A new year begins,
16:28
and he starts working these squash matches,
16:30
these dark matches on SmackDown, working the
16:32
likes of Cameron Grimes, very skilled
16:34
wrestlers. He works
16:36
four or five of those in a row, and
16:38
by February, they just completely stop. And
16:40
once again, we're in this kind of Gable Steveson
16:43
void, really, and there's no
16:46
information coming out, there's no reports of him
16:48
training, he just had this series of matches
16:50
that seemed like some kind of experiment, maybe
16:52
to see how he'd get over with the
16:54
live crowd, and it suddenly
16:57
stops again. It's easy to
16:59
be sort of smart after the fact,
17:01
isn't it? And it's easy for you to
17:03
sit here right now and say what
17:05
they should have done is immediately, or not
17:07
immediately, but soon after the Great American
17:09
Bash, book him in another programme and get
17:12
people to forget about the feud and
17:14
match with Baron Corbin, let's get some positive
17:16
reactions, some positive memories around him as
17:18
a wrestler. The longer they left
17:20
it, it felt like people were like, no,
17:23
I'm fine. I mean, the product was obviously going
17:25
from strength to strength at this time as well,
17:27
so it wasn't like they were crying out for
17:29
someone like this to really grab people's attention. I
17:33
think this for me, looking back now, is when
17:35
the writing was on the wall, that like you
17:37
say, to talk about the Olympic trials, which yes,
17:39
if you'd have gone away and
17:41
they kept him for the Olympics this year, and then
17:43
gone and won a gold medal, and they could be
17:45
like, bloody hell, look, he's won two bloody gold medals
17:47
now, and now he's coming straight back and kicking ass.
17:50
But I think the moment that he started doing that, you're like,
17:53
wrestling fans can be a bit fickle of like, if you're
17:55
not given 100% to this, then what
17:57
are we doing here? Henry Sahuda.
18:00
in fact said that WE
18:02
blocked him from appearing at the Olympic
18:04
trials in April. And
18:07
then we hear about all these releases
18:09
happening and his name gets brought up
18:11
because it's like why are you releasing
18:14
someone like a Treverly, a Cameron Grimes,
18:16
this brilliant you know my love for
18:18
Cameron Grimes, this brilliant
18:21
wrestler who's tried with whatever
18:23
they've given him and been
18:25
squashed by this guy who they haven't
18:27
done anything with since the great American
18:29
bash. Like I said I think at that point
18:31
the writing was on the wall and
18:34
they released him a Meltzer says basically he's got a
18:36
big contract, he got given a big contract when he
18:38
signed and he wasn't cutting it.
18:40
You know they take a punt
18:43
on people sometimes, sometimes it pays
18:45
off. I'm not saying that they
18:47
took a punt on Logan Paul
18:49
but like he had no wrestling,
18:51
pro wrestling experience, no pro wrestling
18:53
experience, he was a great athlete
18:56
but like look at the difference he's had in
18:58
the last few years compared to someone like a
19:00
Gable season whilst doing all the other stuff
19:02
not just focusing completely on it. It
19:05
can be a lottery I will admit
19:07
that but it's been disastrous for a
19:09
number of years and it
19:12
can barely pinpoint a positive moment for Gable's decent
19:14
outside of smiling and waving at SummerSlam and what
19:16
he's been trying to Gable now at WrestleMania. And
19:18
for the amount of money that they've presumably invested
19:20
in him and the amount of hype that they
19:23
gave him and the promotion and the draft and
19:25
all of this stuff, a lot
19:27
of the blame really does have to go
19:29
in the company's shoulders for this because I
19:31
think and again it's really easy to
19:33
say these things now that the WWE run is over
19:35
for him. I'm sure he'll find some
19:38
other line of work. Like MMA,
19:40
bulldoze people, sure. Yeah, yeah. The poor Brock Lesnar did
19:42
there I think. He's going to be back in the
19:44
day. He's going to be back in the day. Like
19:46
with his wrestling pedigree he's probably going to be a
19:49
force. But when it
19:51
comes to pro wrestling, right, it was
19:53
pretty clear from most, even just casual
19:55
observers watching that first SummerSlam appearance, charisma's
19:59
not there. Spark is not
20:01
there and the current you cannot just
20:03
compare people to Kurt Angle It's
20:06
such an unfair expectation to set on
20:08
someone just like with Parker Boudreaux and
20:10
Bronzendre I'm pretty
20:12
sure Parker Boudreaux only got those comparisons because
20:14
he got blonde hair Yeah, that's a bit
20:16
like him. Yeah, exactly. But at the end
20:18
of the day this run was completely cursed
20:20
from day one And
20:23
it's ended the way a lot of people
20:25
thought it would unfortunately I think what probably
20:28
happened was that some guy at Endeavor who
20:30
doesn't know wrestler A from wrestler B Was
20:32
probably looking at the spreadsheet seeing this big-ass
20:34
salary thinking only wrestled once on TV and
20:37
going hey What is this
20:39
get rid of this? Yeah, I think
20:41
it's probably the same reason, you know
20:43
similar reason They just cut Jerry Waller
20:45
loose as a broadcaster with whatever cold-hearted
20:47
business type Yeah looking at these
20:50
things was probably like who's this old dude?
20:52
What are we keeping him around for? We
20:54
saw it with Endeavor when they took over
20:56
the UFC and they released people who had
20:58
sentimental attachments and legends of
21:00
this book Randy Couture regardless right away So
21:03
it's like it's a very similar
21:05
thing. It's quite a stingy company They will
21:07
absolutely offer big money contracts to yourself all
21:09
into people who are there every week as
21:11
we've just seen but when it comes to
21:14
frankly busts Like Gable
21:16
Stevenson. This is the thing is
21:18
just to wrap this off Like
21:21
this isn't them never saying that they
21:23
will take on an athlete
21:25
and try and mold them into a pro wrestler
21:27
you know, they sort of already had a Ready
21:30
made almost in terms of maybe needs tweaked to
21:33
learn the WWE style But Jay Cargill is a
21:35
perfect example of just like she's
21:37
an athlete But now let's make her
21:39
a pro wrestler in WWE eyes And
21:42
they took sucker away and did that
21:44
this next in line program has been
21:46
working wonders for them Typically strap in
21:48
bringing through exact great example. So But
21:51
the problem with it is if
21:53
you don't deliver if you don't
21:55
give them the results they're hoping for Now
21:59
there's another 20 people coming through,
22:01
then the next round of next in line
22:03
selling is from gymnastics football
22:06
MMA athletics
22:09
that will be ready to take your place and yeah this
22:12
is just one of the warning
22:14
tales you could tell people who are
22:17
potentially getting into wrestling because my
22:19
word it all went so wrong. It really did
22:21
and to kind of wrap this up on quite
22:23
a sour note, you know the Olympic
22:26
trials thing, if they just let
22:28
him go like a month earlier he'd have been able to
22:30
go and do those. Yep. But according to Henry, see who
22:32
don't they blocked him from doing them and
22:35
then now obviously they let it go in early May.
22:38
