I didn't expect Gimlet to release a show about soccer so We Came to Win was a pleasant surprise. To some degree, that surprise carried over into my opinion of the series, which was better than I expected. It is very clear that a lot of research went into each episode and I learned some new insights into a sport I have followed my whole life. We Came to Win also does a good job of balancing accessibility to those who aren't as familiar with the sport without patronising them or insulting longtime fans. What drags the show down is that it just isn't adventurous enough. The choice of topics is erratic and questionable - while Spanish women's team's mutiny in response to unfair treatment and Zaire's World Cup debut in 1974 are fascinating explorations of important but lesser known tales, did we need to hear about Jimmy Conrad playing for the US? Speaking of which, almost half of the episodes are somehow related to the USA, which is unnecessarily skewed. There were so many global soccer stories that could have been broadcast.Worth a listen but you may want to check out Forgotten Stories of Football by The Guardian for a more balanced and insightful dive into a range of enlightening soccer topics.
