Hello, Jackson's welcome to the podcast,

0:07

and today it is amazing

0:10

to hear from Dave Logan, who's the voice

0:12

of the Denver Broncos. But I know I have a

0:14

lot of play by play guys on this podcast.

0:16

This is hardly a revelation. This

0:19

is the most interesting play by play man in

0:21

the world. I have to say that I've labeled him

0:23

that because Dave is one of the few

0:25

people in the history of the world to

0:28

be drafted by the NFL,

0:30

Major League Baseball, and the NBA.

0:33

That's right, and he played in the NFL for the

0:35

Cleveland Browns, eventually for

0:38

the Broncos, made his way into

0:40

the broadcast booth as the voice of the Broncos.

0:42

Not only that, but wait, there's more. I sound

0:45

like an old infomercial. Dave

0:47

has also won eleven state

0:49

championships as a high school football

0:52

coach. You want to talk about overachiever,

0:55

that's Dave Logan. But most

0:57

importantly we're talking about the Texans

0:59

verse. This is the Broncos. We will get into some

1:02

of his personal life later on in the pod,

1:04

so check it all out. Our conversation with

1:06

Dave Logan. Dave, how's

1:08

it going, my friend? I imagine a lot better in the last

1:11

five games.

1:12

Hey, Mark, great to catch up with you. Yeah,

1:15

I mean, obviously you would know. It's

1:17

a lot more fun broadcasting

1:19

games when the team is winning and the atmosphere

1:23

is a lot better. And so they're on a five game

1:25

winning streak, and you know, I don't

1:27

think anybody saw that coming after a one and five

1:29

start, but they've been able to turn

1:31

things around and play much better football

1:33

and find ways to win close games.

1:35

All right, when the team got blown out by

1:37

Miami, did you think this was even

1:40

remotely possible? What were your thoughts

1:42

at the time, and what's been the difference

1:44

as they've turned it around.

1:46

Well, I mean, in all honesty,

1:48

no, this is my thirty

1:51

fourth year calling Broncos games, and I

1:53

have never seen not only

1:55

have I not broadcast one, I've not played in

1:57

one. I've not even witnessed the game

2:00

like that where an NFL team gives

2:02

up seventy points. So at

2:04

that point, I think it was in an all time low. I

2:06

mean, we thought there could be all sorts

2:09

of changes, whether coaching changes

2:11

or player changes. I

2:13

think everything was sort of on the table. But I think

2:16

to Sean Payton's

2:18

credit and also to the player's credit.

2:22

They righted the ship, and that's

2:25

that's easier said than done, right, I mean, I think it's

2:27

I think it's it's a pretty good job

2:30

by them, and I think, I think Mark,

2:32

what they've done is they've found

2:34

a formula that works

2:36

for them. They want to run the ball, they

2:38

want to limit turnovers,

2:41

and the defense has been on almost

2:45

and historic run in terms of creating

2:47

turnovers. They've had fifteen turnovers

2:50

in the last four games. They've created

2:52

sixteen in the last five the five game winning

2:54

street they've created sixteen turnovers.

2:56

So that it's worked

2:59

for them now and they are playing

3:01

with confidence, which I think is really important

3:03

even at the NFL level, and playing

3:05

pretty good football.

3:06

Dave Logan, Bronco's voice joining us on

3:09

Texans Radio. Dave, what is the secret

3:11

or the formula to the takeaways? What is

3:13

the theme on how they are taking

3:15

the ball away from the opponent during this streak.

3:18

Yeah, I don't know that. I don't know that there would

3:20

be one thing. I think,

3:23

you know, a couple of couple of guys

3:25

have really stepped up when given the

3:27

opportunity. I think Ja Kwan McMillan has

3:29

been huge for them. He's come

3:31

in and played at the nickel back. He's made

3:34

He's made a bunch of big, big plays.

3:36

He had a two game stretch where he had, you

3:39

know, two interceptions and two caused

3:41

fumbles, and so they and

3:43

I think they've been a little bit more aggressive defensive

3:45

land. I think part of that is they've been able to do a better

3:48

job against the run. They

3:50

were not good against the run, and they're in the early part

3:52

of the season and they've had moments.

3:54

I mean, they gave up over one hundred and sixty yards rushing

3:57

against the Vikings, but then they come

3:59

back and play the Brown last week in Denver and

4:01

they were better. They were better against the rush.

4:04

So I think it starts with that,

4:06

their ability to try to try to control

4:08

that running game and get you into situations

4:10

where they know you're you're gonna

4:12

have to throw it, which is certainly the recipe for

4:15

most NFL teams.

4:17

What about Russell Wilson Dave because

4:19

I look at the passing yard total, it's

4:21

not like he's throwing for buckets of yards

4:23

here, but he does have a lot of touchdown

4:25

passes. What's been the difference for him

4:28

and the success formula.

4:29

I think mark last year. Honestly,

4:32

I think Russell was really humbled. I

4:35

mean, it was just a disastrous season.

4:37

And this is a guy that had had

4:39

really nothing but success coming from

4:41

Seattle, and

4:44

then he comes here and I mean,

4:46

nothing worked. He looked nothing like the

4:49

same guy. The offense was bad,

4:51

the entire team was bad. Obviously, they

4:53

changed coaches, and then you bring in Sean Payton,

4:56

and I think Sean has done a good job with Russell

4:59

sort of just hitting him back on track,

5:01

and so he's he's more willing

5:03

to run this year. He had three kneel

5:06

downs last game, but he had eight eight

5:08

legitimate rushes. And there were

5:10

times last year where he would step

5:12

up into the pocket, pocket would open, he

5:14

just wouldn't run. But he's running

5:17

now. A couple of those last week were designed

5:19

quarterback runs off his own reads, so that

5:22

I think has helped him. And he's been really

5:24

good in the red zone. He's got twenty touchdown passes,

5:26

fourteen or four interceptions. He's

5:29

got no interceptions in the red zone,

5:32

and so I

5:34

think he's he's been accurate, and

5:37

I think the offense has helped him. I mean they're they're

5:39

right now, they're going to run the ball.

5:41

I mean they're going to stay patient with the run and

5:44

not have him take a lot of chances

5:48

in the passing game, and so far it's been

5:50

successful.

5:51

Yeah, I noticed that that he's running the ball

5:53

a little bit more. Is that a huge

5:55

key in their running game overall?

5:57

Because I noticed the production is up. You mentioned it

5:59

yourself.

6:00

Yeah, I don't know if it's a huge key. I think

6:03

I think his willingness to run, and

6:06

again I think you know, just you you contrast

6:09

last year to this year, he just

6:11

for whatever reason, my assessment would

6:13

be he just wasn't willing

6:16

to run. He wasn't looking to run. There

6:18

were opportunities where in the

6:20

past in Seattle you would see the pocket

6:22

open and he'd take off him. He's he's

6:25

really one of the one of the best dual

6:27

threat quarterbacks that the league has seen the last

6:29

twenty years. But

6:31

that was not the case last year. Now this year,

6:34

he's more willing to do that. He's

6:36

been he's been aggressive in

6:39

when things break down in the pockets, stepping

6:42

out and picking up positive yards.

6:44

Instead of last year, I

6:46

think he got a little big play

6:48

happy trying to look for the big

6:51

plays and create those. I mean, big

6:53

plays normally happen. They just sort

6:55

of happen right off the running

6:57

game, off heavy play action. But

6:59

last year it just wasn't a good

7:02

mesh with the offense and Russell.

7:04

Dave Logan, Broncos voice, joining us on Texans

7:06

Radio. Dave, what about Sean Payton?

7:09

Do you think that the sluggish start,

7:11

the bad start was maybe a major

7:13

cultural adjustment to Sean

7:15

Payton and the way he does things, because

7:17

clearly he's had a lot of success and

7:19

now you're seeing the success recently with the

7:21

Broncos, now that he's been in there for a bit.

7:24

Yeah, maybe, I think Mark he's he's

7:27

buttoned up. For sure. There's

7:29

a different feel at the

7:31

Broncos headquarters, I think for everybody,

7:33

and I'm assuming that the

7:35

field is different for players as

7:37

well. These players have told me that. But

7:40

when you look back, I mean, this is going to be

7:42

a season depending on how the last six

7:44

games go. I mean the Broncos are six and

7:46

five now, but they had three home games,

7:49

losing to the Raiders, losing to the Commanders,

7:51

and losing to the Jets. I mean those are

7:53

three teams given the circumstances of

7:55

those three teams, and they had leads

7:57

over those three teams at halftime in

8:00

all three games and wound up losing.

8:02

And so I mean what they've done since

8:04

then makes it even more remarkable

8:07

when you've been in the league a long time

8:09

too, When you when you give away a home

8:11

game to a team that you're

8:13

better than and that you should

8:16

beat, you got to go steal

8:18

one somewhere. I think they stole one in Buffalo,

8:20

and may have stolen one at home against Kansas

8:22

City, breaking that sixteen game losing

8:24

streak. But yeah, I think the culture

8:27

is absolutely different with Sean

8:29

Payton, and I think right now everybody

8:31

would have to say it's working. Dave.

8:34

You're a unique individual being

8:36

drafted in Major League Baseball

8:39

by the NBA Kansas City Kings

8:42

and by the Cleveland Browns. So

8:45

why did you choose football? I know you're a great

8:47

in all three what led you to

8:49

choose football? And can you discuss

8:51

that a bit, because that is unbelievable

8:53

that you were drafted by all three sports.

8:56

Oh gosh, it's

8:58

a long time ago. I can tell you that, But I mean I can drafted

9:00

in baseball out of high school and back

9:02

then the rule has since changed,

9:05

but back then, if you sign a professional

9:07

contract, you could not play any

9:10

sport in college. So

9:12

we notified all the major league teams

9:14

that I was going to go to college and

9:17

do that, and I got drafted by the Cincinnati Reds,

9:19

and then I went to college at the University

9:21

of Colorado. I played both football and basketball,

9:23

and intending to play baseball as well,

9:25

but the coach that recruited

9:28

me to play football got fired after my sophomore

9:30

year. The new coach didn't want

9:32

me to play baseball in the spring, wanted me to get

9:35

involved in the spring football program. But

9:38

in terms of the choice,

9:41

I had broken my ankle playing basketball

9:43

CU shortly

9:46

before the NFL draft, and

9:49

I think it probably hurt me a little bit in terms

9:51

of the draft position. But

9:55

I can't give you an answer in terms of why I picked

9:58

the NFL. I just thought that point, let

10:00

me just go ahead and try this. And I really did

10:03

think, Hey, if if the NFL

10:05

doesn't work out, I'm gonna

10:07

go back and try try

10:09

to sign on with the Kings and see what happens

10:11

there. But fortunately for me, the

10:14

situation in Cleveland was good.

10:16

We all remember the campaign the most interesting

10:18

man in the world. You are the most interesting play

10:20

by play man in the world. There's no question. With all

10:22

this extra curricular stuff, your background

10:24

and the fact that you coach high school football.

10:27

What have you won eight state championships something

10:29

like that in Colorado?

10:31

Well, we've won

10:34

eleven and we're actually playing

10:36

Saturday. We're playing

10:39

Saturday in the state championship

10:41

this year. Normally it's held at

10:43

in Power Field at Male High which

10:45

is the Broncos Stadium. This year's we moved up

10:47

to CSU

10:49

on the campus of Colorida State

10:52

University. So listen, I've

10:54

been I've been blessed to

10:56

excuse me, be able to work with kids for a long

10:58

time. It's thirty one years as a as

11:00

a head coach, and I love kids, and I love football.

11:03

I think the I think football is the greatest

11:05

team sport in the world that can teach teach

11:08

life lessons to so many

11:10

different young people. And so

11:13

it's it's been a great run. It really

11:15

has.

11:16

All right, So you'll coach at a state championship

11:18

game on Saturday and broadcast the Broncos

11:21

at the Texans on Sunday. So

11:23

you're gonna take an early Sunday morning flight. Is that the

11:25

plan?

11:26

Well, I've the plan is to

11:28

try to get down there the last NonStop

11:30

from Denver to Houston. I

11:32

think I have a reasonable

11:35

chance to make that, so we're

11:38

keeping our fingers crossed on that.

11:39

Well, you've never missed a game, right, despite

11:42

coaching all this high school football.

11:43

No, I've never missed a Broncos game. And I've never missed

11:46

a high school game either.

11:47

Wow, you must have had a lot of running through

11:49

the airport scenes. I'm going back to an

11:51

old ye.

11:52

I'll tell you what I've got. You

11:54

know, I've got a handful plus of stories

11:57

that you would just shake

12:00

your head. And I mean I got very, very lucky.

12:02

But it has been There

12:04

have been some late night calls

12:09

trying to get a private plane, realizing

12:12

how much money that would cost, and it's

12:14

but you know what, in the end, I've

12:17

never missed a game. I've had a couple of very

12:19

close calls, but you

12:22

know, it's been worth it. Dave.

12:23

It's such a pleasure to catch up. Best

12:26

of luck in the championship game on Saturday,

12:28

and we hope you make it here safe and I look

12:30

forward to seeing you on Sunday.

12:31

My friend down's good Mark, look forward to seeing
