At thirty three years old, Tony

0:12

Cornell was by no means the most

0:14

senior member of the Cambridge University

0:17

Society for Psychical Research, but

0:20

he was certainly one of the more proactive

0:22

and always on the lookout for a new

0:24

site to investigate. Like

0:27

most members of CUSPR,

0:30

he was a proud rationalist with little

0:32

time for superstition or spiritual

0:35

nonsense, whose interest

0:37

in supposed paranormal and supernatural

0:40

events began from a thoroughly

0:42

skeptical point of view. He

0:45

did, however, maintain a healthy

0:47

fascination with the strange due

0:50

to a peculiar event he experienced

0:52

ten years previously. As

0:55

a young naval officer during the Second

0:57

World War, Tony was stationed

1:00

in southern India, close to the

1:02

Nilgiri Mountains, where he

1:04

became enthralled by stories

1:06

at the local fakir, holy

1:09

men and women without any possessions

1:11

or relations, who were believed

1:13

to possess mystical powers. It

1:17

was said that a fakir could perform

1:19

miracles, with many people traveling

1:22

for miles to seek their wisdom

1:24

and guidance. Although

1:27

thoroughly dubious, Tony was

1:29

nonetheless intrigued enough to

1:31

try and find the man with the

1:33

hope of witnessing these so called

1:35

miracles for himself. Tony

1:38

trekked for hours through rolling,

1:41

tree capped hills and across

1:43

treacherous paths flanked by

1:45

steep, jagged cliffs. At

1:47

about six thousand feet above sea

1:50

level, he came across an old

1:52

man in simple clothes, standing

1:55

at the end of a small plateau,

1:57

as if he had been waiting for Tony to

2:01

to the side of the plateau, lay a steep

2:03

drop into a gully with a stream

2:06

gushing through it without

2:08

acknowledging the young navy officer, the

2:11

fakir asked what it was that

2:13

Tony wanted. Erm

2:16

I hear you can perform miracles, replied

2:19

a startled Tony. You're

2:22

too materialistic, said the

2:24

old man. But I'll give you what

2:26

you want. There was a pause

2:28

as the fakir thought for a moment. Tony

2:32

smiled awkwardly, suddenly

2:34

self conscious at the clash of cultures.

2:38

Look towards those hills, my son, the

2:40

fakir said. Finally, those

2:43

hills, said Tony, pointing

2:46

towards some prominent peaks in the east.

2:49

The fakir gestured yes with a

2:51

gentle nod of the head. And

2:53

Tony turned back to inspect them.

2:57

Do you see, asked the fakir.

3:00

A look of confusion came over Tony's

3:03

face. He scratched his head

3:05

and turned back to the man. I'm

3:08

sorry, I don't, but

3:10

the man wasn't there. Well,

3:13

my son, shouted the fakir

3:15

from the far side of the stream. Did

3:18

that entertain you? Tony

3:21

stood for a moment, trying to

3:23

fathom how a seventy year old man

3:26

could have dropped into the gully and raced

3:28

to the other side at the fast flowing

3:30

waters in only a matter of seconds.

3:34

Smiling to himself, he watched

3:36

as the fakir slowly picked

3:39

his way along the rocky bank before

3:41

disappearing into the bush.

3:46

You're listening to unexplained, and

3:48

I'm Richard McLean Smith.

3:58

The Society of Psycho Research,

4:01

of which Tony's CUSPR

4:04

group was an affiliate, was established

4:06

in eighteen eighty two, largely

4:09

in response to a peculiar craze

4:11

that was gripping the nation. It

4:14

had its origins in a small wooden

4:16

house in the tiny hamlet of Hydesville,

4:19

New York. It was there

4:21

that, in eighteen forty eight, two

4:23

sisters, Kate and Margaret

4:26

Fox claimed to have made contact

4:28

with the spirit of a dead man who

4:31

communicated with them through a series

4:33

of knocks and bangs. In

4:36

other words, they'd allegedly made

4:38

contact with a poltergeist, and

4:41

in doing so had inadvertently

4:44

created a movement that would come

4:46

to be known as spiritualism.

4:49

As news of the Fox sisters incredible

4:51

claims spread through the UK, it

4:54

wasn't long before everybody from

4:57

scullery staff to Queen Victoria

5:00

were conducting seances in an

5:02

attempt to communicate with the

5:04

dead. As the movement

5:07

grew in popularity throughout

5:09

the world, so too

5:11

did the stories of strange paranormal

5:13

happenings that seemed suddenly

5:16

to be breaking out everywhere.

5:19

For those caught up in the scientific

5:21

fervor of the Enlightenment age, the

5:24

emergence of such stories was

5:26

a horrifying repast to the increasingly

5:29

rationalist and atheistic principles

5:32

catalyzing academia at the time.

5:36

Although many in the scientific community

5:38

dismissed paranormal claims out

5:41

of hand, a small number of academics,

5:44

led by Henry and Eleanor Sedgwick,

5:46

William Barrett and Edmund Gurney,

5:49

among others, took a different

5:51

tack. They decided

5:54

instead to quote approach

5:56

the varied problems without prejudice

5:59

or prepossession of any kind, in

6:01

the same spirit of exact and unimpassioned

6:04

inquiry which has enabled science

6:06

to solve so many problems once

6:09

not less obscure nor

6:11

less hotly debated. And

6:15

so the spr was born, the

6:17

world's first ghostbusters.

6:21

The Cambridge branch of the society was

6:23

founded in nineteen o six. It

6:26

existed mostly as an organization

6:29

for like minded people to get

6:31

together and share stories regarding

6:34

the latest papers and theories they'd

6:36

read. But sometimes,

6:38

if they were lucky, the chance

6:41

for something more hands on would

6:43

crop up, like that which

6:46

Tony Cornell brought to the group one

6:48

evening in November nineteen

6:50

fifty seven. The

6:52

curious case had presented itself

6:55

a few days earlier, when a young

6:57

journalist based out at Wisbeach,

7:00

some forty miles north of Cambridge,

7:02

had contacted him

7:05

at the beginning of October. Anthony

7:08

Wilmot, who worked for the Wisbeach

7:10

Advertiser, had overheard a

7:12

conversation about some mysterious

7:15

goings on at an old manor house

7:18

known as Hanneth Hall, situated

7:21

out in the floodlands or fends

7:24

close to where he lived. The

7:27

house, he would later discover, had

7:30

been plagued by apparent hauntings

7:32

for years. Wilmot

7:35

didn't care much for silly ghost stories,

7:38

but after learning one of the current tenants

7:41

was local labor politician Derek

7:43

Page, he couldn't resist

7:46

following up on the story. Anthony

7:55

Wilmot arranged to interview Derek

7:58

Page and his wife, Audrey, as

8:00

well as Audrey's mother Rose, at

8:02

the house. He arrived with

8:04

his tongue firmly in cheek, only

8:07

to find the family in a genuine

8:09

state of distress. For

8:12

the next hour, he was treated

8:14

to a variety of extraordinary

8:16

tales outlining all the

8:18

strange events they'd experienced at

8:20

the house since arriving from Cheshire

8:23

two months previously. In

8:25

fact, they'd only been there a

8:27

matter of days, Audrey explained

8:30

when she was awoken in the early hours

8:32

of the morning by the sound of

8:34

a very clear and insistent

8:37

tapping that seemed to be coming

8:39

from just outside her bedroom. Thinking

8:43

she'd imagined it, she turned to

8:45

go back to sleep, only for

8:47

it to start up again, this

8:50

time a little louder. She

8:52

sat up immediately Knowing

8:55

it couldn't have been Derek since he stayed

8:58

in another town during the week for fur work,

9:01

she assumed it was one of the children, or

9:03

perhaps her mother, who slept

9:05

in the bedroom opposite

9:08

Yes, Audrey whispered out in

9:10

the dark. Hello,

9:14

Knock, came the reply. Audrey

9:18

hurriedly switched on the bedside light.

9:21

Hello, She asked again, but

9:24

still there was no reply. Collecting

9:27

herself, she stepped out of bed

9:30

and made her way cautiously towards

9:32

the door. With a trembling

9:34

hand, she took hold of the handle.

9:38

She eased the door open a fraction

9:41

and peered through the gap into

9:43

the darkness of the corridor beyond.

9:46

There was nobody there. Ever,

9:49

since that night, the family had

9:51

heard similar knocks and taps

9:53

throughout the house. Audrey

9:56

was certain that on a separate occasion,

9:59

she heard footst steps descending the stairs

10:02

with a clearly defined shifting

10:04

of weight from one foot to another.

10:07

She was alone in the house at the time.

10:11

A few weeks later, Audrey's

10:13

mother Rose woke up after

10:15

feeling a violent jolt against

10:17

her bed. Not long after,

10:20

despite being partially deaf, she

10:23

was woken in the middle of the night by

10:25

an inexplicably loud, crashing

10:27

sound coming from just outside

10:30

the door. It was

10:32

as if the door itself were being

10:34

smashed in. Unlike

10:46

Rose and Audrey, Derek Page

10:49

hadn't heard these noises himself, and

10:51

joked that it was probably just old

10:53

Tories who used to own the house

10:56

turning in their graves at the thought

10:59

of him living there. He did

11:01

recount one rather strange

11:03

story of his own, however, Not

11:06

long after they'd moved in, his

11:08

mother traveled down from Manchester

11:11

to stay with the family for a few weeks.

11:14

After a couple of nights sleeping

11:16

in the spare bedroom, she began

11:19

to experience a recurring set

11:21

of bizarre and terrifying nightmares.

11:24

A couple of times she found herself

11:27

floating out of her body and

11:29

looking down at herself as she slept.

11:32

As she stared down, she had

11:35

the very vivid sense that something

11:37

profoundly malignant was trying

11:39

to pull her away, and that if

11:42

she didn't return to her body, she

11:44

would never wake up. Other

11:47

times, she dreamt that she was

11:49

trapped under the legs of a horse as

11:51

it kicked violently at her face. After

11:55

less than a week, having also started

11:57

to hear the noises, she made a heady

12:00

retreat back to Manchester. Audrey

12:04

and Rose told the young journalist

12:06

that the knocking sounds had grown worse

12:09

over the last few weeks, and that

12:11

increasingly they seemed to be

12:13

coming from one room located

12:17

at the north end of the first floor. The

12:19

family figured the room was once a bedroom

12:22

owing to its size, but since

12:24

it had never been rigged up to the mains,

12:26

they were currently using it for storage and

12:29

rarely went inside it. After

12:32

leaving Hanneth Hall that afternoon,

12:34

journalist Anthony Wilmot decided

12:37

to do some further digging of his own,

12:39

and that, as he explained to

12:42

Tony Cornell over the phone a

12:44

few weeks later, was when things

12:46

started to get really interesting.

12:50

The house, as he discovered, was

12:52

built sometime in the sixteenth century

12:55

and was thought originally to have belonged

12:57

to a Richard Sparrow, earning

12:59

it the nickname Sparrow's Nest.

13:02

Over the years, it passed through

13:04

a number of owners, gaining its

13:07

current name after being purchased

13:09

by a Joseph Hanneth in eighteen

13:11

twelve. The house

13:13

was sold again to George Williams

13:16

in eighteen ninety nine, who elected

13:18

to keep the name Hannath Hall.

13:21

Wilmot got in touch with the building's

13:23

current owner, Hugh Williams, George's

13:26

grandson, to find out more.

13:30

Much to his surprise, Hugh

13:32

and his family, who'd lived in the house

13:34

for forty years before renting it

13:36

out to Audrey and Derek, were

13:38

more than familiar with the spooky

13:41

goings on there. Hugh

13:43

went on to describe an incident a

13:45

few years earlier involving his

13:47

brother Peter. While staying

13:50

alone in the house, he had

13:52

apparently witnessed a door handle

13:54

turning of its own accord. Another

13:57

time, Hugh's nieces suffered

13:59

via nightmares whilst sleeping

14:02

in the now disused room at the

14:04

far end of the property. They'd

14:06

also apparently woken up one

14:09

night to find a pair of blood

14:11

stained hands floating

14:13

in the room with them. That

14:16

wouldn't be the bedroom on the north side

14:18

with it by any chance, Wilmot

14:20

had asked, Oh, you

14:23

mean the haunted bedroom, replied

14:25

Hugh. As

14:33

it turned out, Hugh Williams's

14:35

family had taken to calling the

14:38

north end bedroom the haunted

14:40

bedroom on account of a morbid

14:42

story they'd heard about one

14:44

of the previous owners long

14:47

before the house was wired for electricity.

14:50

The so called haunted room was

14:52

in fact the master bedroom. As

14:55

the story went, it was in this

14:57

room that the wife of former owner

15:00

Joseph Hanneth, who brought the property

15:02

from his father in eighteen twelve,

15:05

had died young. Her

15:07

death left Joseph so bereft

15:09

he couldn't bear to release the body for

15:12

burial, so he decided instead

15:14

to have it interred in an open

15:17

coffin, which he kept at

15:19

the end of his bed. For

15:21

six weeks and increasingly

15:23

unhinged, Joseph continued

15:25

to order his servants to bring his

15:28

wife three meals a day while

15:30

her body steadily putrefied.

15:33

Eventually, with the stench becoming

15:36

unbearable, Joseph was brought

15:38

to his senses just long enough

15:41

to take the body into the front garden,

15:43

where he was said to have buried it under

15:46

a large horse chestnut tree.

15:50

As Wilmot explained to Tony over

15:52

the phone, because his article about

15:54

the house had been well received, and

15:56

with Halloween drawing near, he

15:59

asked Derrick Audrey if he could

16:01

spend a night in the house and write

16:03

about it, since the couple

16:05

were eager to prove they weren't making

16:07

anything up, they invited Wilmot

16:10

to stay, and

16:12

so on the thirty first of October,

16:14

Wilmot arrived again at Hanneth

16:16

Hall, this time with a senior

16:19

colleague from the paper and a friend

16:21

who lived locally, along with his

16:23

pet labrador, Simba. Later

16:27

that night, as the Devil's Hour

16:29

approached and with Audrey Rose

16:32

and the children fast asleep, derreck

16:34

Page, Wilmot and his colleague

16:38

took up positions on the landing, while

16:40

Wilmot's friend and Simba kept

16:43

watch in the old master bedroom.

16:46

Despite some initial nervous joshing,

16:49

it hadn't taken long for a pervasive

16:52

eeriness to descend. Then

16:56

from somewhere in the house, a clock

16:58

struck twelve, and Simber

17:01

began to whimper mournfully. A

17:04

noise was hurt coming from inside

17:07

a spare bedroom off to the side,

17:09

but not one of the men at the courage

17:12

to investigate it. A

17:14

moment later, they all sensed

17:16

a significant drop in temperature,

17:19

followed by the smell of sandal wood

17:21

that seemed to be sweeping back

17:23

and forth along the corridor. Although

17:27

little else occurred that evening, whether

17:29

it had been the charge of the occasion

17:32

or merely the atmosphere of the evocative

17:35

old building. When the men

17:37

finally called it a night at two thirty

17:39

a m. It was with the distinct

17:42

impression that they had experienced

17:44

something. It

17:47

was a few days later, unable

17:49

to shake the weight of the evening from

17:51

his mind, that Wilmot decided

17:53

to get in touch with the Society

17:56

of Psychical Research. It's

18:05

just after eight pm on the

18:07

evening of seventeenth November

18:09

nineteen fifty seven, with

18:11

only the barer sliver of a waning

18:14

moon in the sky. Tony

18:16

Cornell and fellow CUSPR

18:19

members Alan Gould, David

18:22

Murray and Michael Brotherton assemble

18:25

briefly outside Tony's apartment

18:28

before getting into his car and

18:30

heading out towards Wisbeach. With

18:34

Cambridge's university towers

18:36

and spires receding behind

18:38

them, they soon slip out beyond

18:40

the city's edge and into the darkness

18:43

of the East Anglian countryside.

18:46

They made their way north along winding

18:49

country roads. As their eyes

18:51

adjusted to the dark, a

18:53

wide menagerie of stars

18:56

began to emerge above, while

18:58

ahead, the rich black earth

19:01

and shimmering waterways of the Fens

19:03

were approaching. It

19:06

has just gone ten pm when the

19:08

team eventually arrive at the pretty

19:11

market town of Wisbeach, located

19:13

on the banks of the River Nen. The

19:16

town, known as the Capital

19:19

of the Fence, is a rare static

19:21

fixture in an otherwise ever

19:24

changing landscape.

19:26

Four hundred years ago, the region

19:28

was a mass of treacherous peaty swamps

19:31

and quicksilver surfaces, a

19:34

perilous place for unsuspecting

19:36

travelers foolish enough to

19:39

go chasing the many willow wisps

19:42

that regularly danced across

19:44

its transitory plains. They

19:47

may appear tamed for now, but

19:49

the Fens remain a border country,

19:52

where the firm and fluid mingle

19:55

of histories washed from the

19:57

land, and an ever shifting

19:59

reminder of the illusion of

20:02

solidity. Turning

20:04

into the town center, the team

20:06

spot the short and bespectacled

20:08

Anthony Wilmot. He's waiting

20:11

for them outside the Rose and Crown

20:13

Pub, along with two friends

20:15

he's unexpectedly brought along

20:18

for the evening. The appearance

20:20

of the two men, who introduce themselves

20:23

as mister Trumpets and mister

20:25

Perryman, immediately raises

20:27

Alan Gull's suspicions.

20:29

Concerned that they might be under instruction

20:32

from the journalist to guarantee some

20:34

strange goings on later. We

20:37

should keep an eye on them, he warns

20:39

the others as they drive off again.

20:43

The group continue in convoy behind

20:46

Wilmot's car. It's not

20:48

long before they're back among the fields

20:50

and waterways, staring out at

20:52

the edge of fendland flats that

20:55

seem to merge with the night. When

20:57

the temperature takes a sudden

21:00

plunge. The men

21:02

watch with concern as a thick

21:04

fog starts to sweep across

21:06

the fields, until finally

21:09

it has all but engulfed the cars.

21:12

Tony works hard at the wheel to

21:15

keep Wilmot's rear lights in view

21:17

as Alan struggles to locate their

21:19

position on the map. After

21:22

another ten minutes or so, Tony

21:25

catches Wilmot making a sharp left

21:27

turn, which, according to Alan, as

21:30

them heading in the direction of the small

21:32

hamlet of Tide Saint Mary. With

21:35

Wilmot's car now having disappeared

21:38

into the fog, they have little

21:40

option but to continue straight

21:43

along the road. After

21:54

half a mile or so, the fog

21:57

finally begins to clear, revealing

22:00

the journalist. Wilmot's car parked

22:02

up ahead at the entrance to a driveway,

22:06

and in a space some fifty yards

22:08

beyond, obscured by darkness

22:11

and a dense row of tall trees,

22:14

they can just make out the imposing

22:16

presence of Hanneth Hall.

22:20

As Tony turns into the drive moving

22:23

through the line of trees, the large

22:26

red brick pile looms

22:28

out of the darkness. There

22:31

is something of the dark fairy tale about

22:33

the five bedroom Elizabethan manor,

22:36

flanked by two prominent gable

22:39

roofs and shrouded by trees

22:41

that seem unusually tall for

22:43

these parts, Its stately

22:45

symmetry oddly offset by

22:48

the peculiar placement of the building

22:50

central windows. That

22:53

all the windows appear so small for

22:55

such a large facade, and

22:57

with only one presently lit from within,

23:00

does little to dispel the ominous

23:02

air of the building's brooding

23:04

visage. Seeing

23:06

the place now up close, how

23:08

its lines have warped and buckled

23:11

with age, and how thirstily

23:13

the creeping vines of Ivy seem

23:16

to be claiming it for their own. It

23:19

feels as much a natural part of

23:21

the landscape as any surrounding

23:23

birch or alder. As

23:26

the men exit their car, making

23:29

sure to remember their note books. They

23:31

are struck by the stillness. A

23:34

strained animal cry from

23:36

the dark of the field opposite breaks

23:39

the silence. Impressive,

23:41

isn't it, says Wilmot as

23:44

he walks round to the front. Come

23:46

on, I'll introduce you. With

23:50

Derek and Audrey out at the cinema and

23:52

the children tucked up in bed. Audrey's

23:55

mother, Rose steps out to welcome

23:57

the men. She invited them

24:00

to come inside and take a seat

24:02

in the living room, a comparatively

24:04

small space at the front of the house.

24:07

Rose disappears to make teas and coffees.

24:10

As the men take seats around the table,

24:13

with a warm fire licking and

24:16

crackling at the back of the room, Wilmot

24:18

takes the opportunity to recount

24:21

the details of his last visit. It

24:24

isn't long before talk turns

24:26

to the haunted bedroom.

24:28

Yes, that's where I hear it coming

24:30

from two, says Rose as

24:33

she brings the drinks into the room,

24:35

barely audible above the growing chatter

24:37

of the men. What was

24:40

that, asks Tony as

24:42

Rose quietly takes a seat beside

24:44

him at the table. The dreadful

24:47

knockings, she replies, bringing

24:49

a sudden hush to the room.

24:52

Have you heard them recently, missus Hall's

24:55

asks Allan as they all move in

24:57

closer to listen. Oh,

25:00

yes, I heard them, only two

25:02

hours ago, she replies. At

25:05

that moment, the sound of the opening

25:08

front door is followed by the

25:10

entrance of Derek and Audrey. They

25:13

apologized for their lateness and

25:15

quickly set about introducing

25:17

themselves to Tony and the rest of

25:19

the group. A

25:27

short time after returning home, Audrey

25:30

leads everyone on a tour of the house,

25:33

first to the large washroom at the north

25:35

end, then back to the living room.

25:38

She points out the pantry and the kitchen

25:41

as they go, before taking them

25:43

through to an impressive dining room

25:45

at the back of the southern end, and

25:48

on into the equally impressive lounge

25:50

at the front. They continue

25:53

up the red carpeted stairs and

25:55

onto the landing. It

25:58

was on these stairs Audrey explanes

26:00

that she'd heard the sound of footsteps

26:03

not long after they moved in. The

26:06

landing is illuminated with a single

26:09

bulb, which flickers weakly

26:11

as it struggles to keep the shadows

26:13

at bay. Along

26:15

the walls are a number of antique

26:18

military artifacts that have belonged

26:20

to the Williams family for generations.

26:24

Continuing the tour, Audrey

26:26

points out her mother's bedroom at the back,

26:29

followed by the present day master

26:31

bedroom where she and Derek sleep

26:33

directly opposite. Moving

26:36

quietly over the thickly carpeted

26:39

hall, past the antique swords

26:41

and flint locks, Audrey

26:43

stops the men outside the children's

26:45

room and gives the door a

26:47

gentle push. Inside

26:50

are the two small bodies of her three

26:52

year old son and five year old

26:54

daughter, lying sound asleep

26:57

in their beds. Moving

26:59

on again, then just past the children's

27:02

room to the right is the spare

27:04

bedroom where Derek's mother

27:06

experienced her unsettling dreams.

27:09

And then finally they come

27:12

to the large disused room at

27:14

the northern end, the

27:16

haunted bedroom, says Wilmot

27:18

from the back. Let's

27:21

call this bedroom a shall we? Says

27:23

Alan? Eager to keep things

27:25

professional, may

27:28

I asks Tony, looking

27:30

to Audrey, Please, but

27:33

remember there's no light, so you'll need

27:35

to switch on your torches. Tony

27:38

eases the door open, and,

27:40

assisted by Alan and Michael's

27:42

torchlight, leads the group inside.

27:47

Moving the beams of light around, they

27:49

spot a number of packing cases stacked

27:52

up against the inside left corner,

27:55

with further piles of books and chairs

27:57

placed up on top of them. Three

28:00

chairs and a dressing table are lined

28:02

up against the back, and in the

28:04

far left corner, pieces of

28:06

a dismantled brass bed lean

28:09

against the wall. A

28:11

few other bits and pieces are dotted about,

28:14

including two mattresses on the floor

28:16

lying end to end under the front

28:18

window. As

28:21

Anthony Wilmot explains, they

28:23

were placed there on his last visit to the

28:25

house, when he and his friends had

28:27

kept their late night vigil. Alan

28:30

and Tony agree it will be useful

28:32

to keep them as they are for sitting on

28:35

later. Next

28:37

Derek leads the group outside to

28:40

make a quick inspection of the exterior,

28:43

but they find nothing of note. Once

28:46

back inside, the group synchronized

28:49

their watches then while

28:51

Alan makes his way upstairs to

28:54

keep an eye out for any strange happenings

28:56

above, Tony, David,

28:59

and Michael gather everyone else

29:01

into the living room to begin the

29:03

next stage of their investigation

29:06

of good old fashioned seance.
