The Cape Fear Unearthed podcast presents, "Unearthing 1898," a special series detailing the events before, during and after the tragedy of Nov. 10, 1898 in Wilmington, NC.
On Nov. 10, 1898, a mob of white supremacists led an armed campaign to seize control of the local government and suppress the progress of the Black community through intimidation and outright murder.
In addition to the violent events of the Wilmington Massacre, the loss of life and institution of fear that gripped the city for years to come robbed Wilmington of its progressive status as a place of Black opportunity. To this day, the number of Black residents killed or run out of Wilmington is still not accurately known.
To tell the expansive story of 1898, Cape Fear Unearthed host Hunter Ingram is joined by seven special guests across three episodes, each of which will feature a conversation with a panel of experts that takes listeners through Wilmington’s darkest chapter.
Among the guests featured are LeRae Umfleet, lead researcher for the state's commission on 1898 and author of "A Day of Blood;" Jan Davidson, historian for the Cape Fear Museum; Chris E. Fonvielle Jr, local historian and author; Christopher Everett, director of "Wilmington on Fire;" David Zucchino, author of "Wilmington's Lie;" Cynthia Brown, historian of St. Stephen AME Church; and David Cecelski, historian and co-author of "Democracy Betrayed."
