How many times have we heard from our parents how lucky we are that we get to eat three meals a day? Considering that there are kids who don’t get to satiate their hunger?

In this episode of the Truth 4 The Youth Podcast, Garth dives in on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, one of the best-known theories of motivation. This theory helps us understand our inherent nature to meet our needs just to survive. Garth also touches on the topic of how parents/guardians sacrifice a lot to meet also their family’s needs and how third-world countries struggle to provide every individual’s needs. That is why he urges you to educate the youth to be more grateful and aware of what they are capable of to meet their own and others’ needs.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs states the needs of an individual. There are five levels which are often displayed as a pyramid. At the lowest level are our most basic needs while the most complex needs sit atop.
  • It gets challenging to satisfy an individual’s need as you go higher the pyramid. But for some people, especially in the third-world countries, it is already a struggle to meet their needs for food, water, clothing, and shelter.
  • As for breadwinners for families, they do everything, even beyond their means, just to provide for them. Sometimes, they put the other family members’ needs above theirs.

BEST MOMENTS

  • “That’s a basic, and some of us take that for granted… but out there, there are some people, kids, who don’t have that luxury or that basic need.”
  • “Stop beating them down and saying how terrible they are. We have to start lifting them up and give them opportunities to meet their basic needs first and then they can go on to live the lives they deserve to live.”
