Welcome to Travels with Jim and Rita .
0:26
I'm your host , jim Santos , and in this podcast series you can follow along as my wife Rita and I work
0:28
out our crazy plan to outfox the real estate market in the US and
0:30
actually increase our retirement nest egg by
0:33
spending the next three years or so living abroad
0:35
and exploring the world . Are
0:37
we bold , forward-thinking pioneers or
0:40
just plain nuts ? Let's find out together
0:42
, shall we ? Hello
0:57
everybody , I'm Jim traveling with my lovely wife Rita , and you're listening to Travels with
0:59
Jim and Rita . Well , we've had a busy 10 days in
1:01
Knoxville with doctor's appointments , getting
1:03
our household storage situation under control
1:05
, sorting our clothing for the next two
1:07
legs of our travel and getting the car
1:09
service before we take a 2,000 miles plus
1:12
road trip to visit family and friends
1:14
before we leave for Europe in early August
1:16
. I thought it would be a good time
1:18
during this break to stop and take stock of how
1:20
things have been going with our plans to grow our nest
1:22
egg while traveling and living on a budget
1:24
of about $3,000 a month . Let's
1:27
look at expenses first . Although
1:30
not technically part of our roving lifestyle
1:32
, as the travel happened before we sold our home
1:34
, we did spend 10 weeks in
1:36
Panama , one month in Panama
1:38
City and six weeks at the beach in
1:40
Playa Coronado . The
1:43
month in Panama City turned out great . We
1:45
got a good rate on the Airbnb , less than $1,200
1:48
a month , and we were just a short walk from a mercado
1:50
and seafood market , which really cut our
1:52
food expenses . Even with
1:55
some nice meals , out excursions to the Miraflores
1:57
Lock and the island of Tobago , we
2:00
still came in at $2,746.17
2:04
for the month , easily under budget
2:06
, and it included our transfer to Playa
2:08
Coronado . Rita , how did you feel about
2:10
that Panama City trip ?
2:11
I actually liked Panama City
2:14
. I
2:18
enjoyed the Rambla , or some people call it the Malecon . We had access to great
2:20
food at the Mercados , the
2:23
fish market and also
2:25
the veggie and fruit market . We
2:28
enjoyed walking around Old Town
2:30
, which was Casa Viejo
2:32
. So all in all
2:34
, I would say it was a great trip in
2:36
that we got to really enjoy
2:39
Panama City . However
2:42
, it was extremely
2:44
warm most
2:46
days in the 90s
2:49
, very humid , so
2:51
we did most of our walking early
2:54
in the morning and if we went out
2:56
at night we used Ubers
2:58
so that we didn't have to walk back
3:00
in the heat . But I thought
3:03
it was a beautiful city . It has
3:05
something for everyone . It
3:07
had two great malls . One was the
3:10
Albrook Mall , which really
3:12
I felt was more the
3:14
everyman's mall . Anyone
3:16
could find something there that
3:19
they would enjoy . And then there was
3:21
the Multiplaza Mall , which
3:23
was more a luxury
3:25
mall , more upscale . Yeah , fendi
3:28
, cartier , chanel
3:30
, that kind of stores , which
3:33
is not your average man's
3:36
cup of tea , but if you
3:38
can afford it , that's wonderful . But it
3:40
has something for everyone .
3:42
I really liked about the Ubers Absolutely
3:44
.
3:44
The first one we ordered .
3:46
we ordered it before we went down the elevator
3:48
, and by the time we got there the guy was waiting
3:50
for us . So after that we had to wait until
3:52
we were actually on the street to order it , because you could
3:54
get them so quickly and pretty
3:57
cheaply too .
3:58
Right , I think that Panama City was
4:00
very convenient . Would be easy
4:03
to live there if you
4:05
could tolerate the climate .
4:08
And , to be fair , they were having a
4:10
hotter than normal winter .
4:12
Exactly they were .
4:13
But you can expect it to be
4:15
pretty hot and pretty humid for a good part
4:17
of the year there .
4:18
Right . All right . Well , now let's talk
4:20
about our other Panama excursion . That was
4:22
to Playa Coronado , about an hour and a half
4:24
or so southwest of the
4:26
city . We were there for 10
4:29
weeks , so that would make our proposed
4:31
budget about $4,500 for that
4:33
visit . Now , right off the
4:35
bat , we were in trouble because our Airbnb fee was
4:37
$3,587.33 , so that left us less than
4:39
$1,000 to work with , and 33 cents , so
4:41
that left us less than $1,000 to work
4:43
with . Even worse , much
4:45
to our surprise , there was no easy
4:47
way to reach a mercado or a seafood
4:49
market to limit our grocery expenses . We
4:57
did , however , save on dinners out , but only because we had limited choices and the food was
4:59
not anything special in the restaurants that we could get to . So still for the
5:01
six weeks , we came in at $51,3723
5:05
, which was about $600 over budget
5:07
. But wait , we
5:10
had a lot of trouble with the air conditioning in the unit
5:12
and you can get the details in an earlier
5:14
podcast and also on my blog
5:16
at jimsantosbooks . com/ blog
5:19
. But there were other issues with cleanliness
5:21
in the condo as well . So
5:23
we ended up asking the owner very nicely
5:26
, I thought if she could rebate us $600
5:29
due to the several days where we had no AC
5:31
. We had to wait for repairmen and because
5:33
the pool was closed for part of our stay , we
5:36
thought she'd probably count her at around $400
5:38
. Instead she refused to refund
5:41
a dime . She offered to let us stay
5:43
a couple of days longer or come back next year
5:45
for a few days for free , but why
5:47
we would want to do that with the problems we were having
5:49
, I have no idea . But
5:52
at any rate , you can always involve Airbnb
5:54
directly in any dispute . Now
5:57
we took the precautions of taking pictures of
5:59
leaking AC units , stains
6:01
on the couches and mattresses , and
6:03
had screen captures with dates and times of
6:06
when we were asking for help or reporting
6:08
a repairman that had still not arrived
6:10
over WhatsApp . Much
6:13
to our surprise and delight , airbnb
6:15
determined that we should get a refund of
6:17
$1,147.50
6:19
for our trouble and promptly
6:21
issued a credit to our card . So
6:24
that dropped our 10-week expenses down to $39
6:26
89 and 73
6:28
cents , so suddenly we were almost $600
6:30
under budget . Now
6:32
, rita , I know you were not particularly thrilled
6:35
with our stay in Playa Coronado . Right
6:37
. I think it was a big disappointment
6:41
to us because there
6:43
were , first of all , everyone
6:45
we saw was an expat . The
6:48
eateries were catering
6:50
to expats only . You didn't see
6:53
any locals eating in them .
6:55
And all bar food . There weren't really Panamanian
6:57
delicacies , exactly .
6:59
There was not really what you would call
7:02
local food at
7:04
all , and I think the biggest
7:06
thing for me was the first beach
7:08
area I've ever been that
7:11
you couldn't walk in any direction
7:14
and not have a drink or
7:16
a meal right on the ocean
7:18
. All those restaurants
7:20
were way
7:22
back from the ocean . You weren't enjoying
7:25
like a sunset
7:27
or a sunrise , going for a cup
7:30
of coffee and then sitting on the beach . That
7:32
just wasn't available there . So
7:34
for me , as far as a beach
7:36
experience , it wasn't what I
7:38
was anticipating and
7:41
I just didn't feel
7:44
any local vibe .
7:46
Yeah , it was disappointing , but if
7:48
you're looking for an expat destination
7:51
where you can play golf , where
7:54
you're surrounded by a lot of other expats , so
7:56
there's not as much pressure on trying to
7:58
learn Spanish or learning anything about the culture
8:00
.
8:01
It would be a super easy landing if
8:03
you intend not to be
8:05
involved in any way with the local culture
8:08
. Well , the saga continues . We returned
8:10
from Panama in mid-March . We had
8:12
a buyer on the hook and about a month to
8:14
get our household goods sorted , distributed
8:16
, packed up and stored . Somehow
8:19
we managed I'm still not really sure exactly
8:21
how and on April 18th we closed
8:24
on the house and headed for the eastern panhandle
8:26
of West Virginia to spend a few days with our daughters
8:28
and grandkids before leaving for Mexico
8:30
. Now , our first week in Mexico was
8:33
at a seaside resort in Playa del
8:35
Carmen called Sunset Fisherman . That
8:38
week we consider completely off the books
8:40
. This was purely a rest and recovery
8:42
vacation after the stress and the physical
8:44
effort of packing up the house . Now
8:47
, we didn't worry about budgets at all . We just enjoyed
8:49
meals , this time by the beach , and
8:52
we sat on our balcony every morning with coffee , gazing
8:55
out at Cozumel across the water . Now
8:58
, despite more hot weather , that seems to be really
9:00
a theme with us this year . I really thought
9:02
that was a great and very relaxing week
9:04
. How about you , R rita ? Oh
9:06
yeah , I loved it . I
9:09
loved the fact that we could walk less
9:11
than a mile down the road
9:13
and have any type of food that
9:16
we wanted sit on the beach
9:18
, enjoy our drinks , have a nice meal
9:20
. Plus , we
9:22
actually took a ferry across to Cozumel
9:25
and visited our friend Belle , which
9:27
we had a great day with her . Belle
9:29
, the batty botanist . Yes .
9:31
You look her baddibat up on Facebook .
9:33
Yeah , absolutely so . It
9:35
was a fabulous week . I really
9:37
enjoyed it . I loved where we
9:39
stayed , the fact that we
9:41
could be on our balcony , nobody bothering
9:44
us , nobody could see us , we could have our
9:46
coffee , just enjoy
9:48
. It was very relaxing . I enjoyed
9:50
it .
9:51
Yeah , it was the beach vacation we thought we were going to be getting
9:53
in Playa Coronado .
9:55
Right , exactly , okay , now back into
9:57
roving mode .
9:57
We thought we were going to be getting in Playa Coronado , right
9:59
, exactly . Okay , now back into roving mode . We set
10:02
out from the Cancun airport to the mountain town of San Miguel
10:04
del Allende . Now
10:06
there , our Airbnb expenses was just
10:08
over $1,200 , which is not
10:10
too bad , but it's a little pricey for San Miguel
10:13
in the off season . We were
10:15
, however , right in the old town section and
10:17
just a short walk from Mercado , so
10:19
we were very happy with the location . We
10:22
ate out a little more often than usual because
10:24
we had friends in the town , but we still
10:26
came close to our budget , hitting $31
10:29
31 , and $0.94 , so we
10:31
were just slightly over budget . Now
10:33
, despite a record heat wave , again
10:36
, this is the year of hot
10:38
for us . We had daytime temperatures
10:40
in the mid-90s for most of the month . It was
10:42
really anywhere from 10 to 14 degrees
10:44
hotter than it normally is at that time of the
10:46
year in San Miguel , but we
10:48
still really liked it . In fact , we actually came
10:51
close to buying a home there , right ?
10:53
Yeah , yeah , I loved well
10:55
, we looked at several homes , but
10:57
I really fell in love with one , and you
11:00
did too . It had outside
11:02
courtyard .
11:04
A beautiful rooftop .
11:05
Oh , beautiful rooftop . It was
11:07
absolutely perfect . That
11:09
was the only home that we saw that I thought I could
11:11
see us living in . We saw that I thought I could
11:13
see us living in . The
11:16
kitchen was great . There were three
11:18
bedrooms , three
11:27
full baths . It was perfect , had a place to park a car . It would have
11:29
been a very easy transition for us because it was more us than anything
11:31
we saw . But the altitude
11:34
at 6,000 feet was giving
11:36
me some blood oxygen level
11:39
problems and
11:41
I'm not real sure . I think maybe
11:43
we should go back at another time and see
11:45
if we can acclimate . I'm not
11:48
real sure that we can or
11:50
I can , but I love the Tuesday market , oh my
11:52
gosh . Yeah , the Tuesday market , oh
11:54
my gosh .
11:55
Yeah , the Tuesday market was great .
11:57
Yeah , it was about an
11:59
acre of market of the
12:01
most unbelievable produce
12:04
and it was just fabulous
12:06
. The fruits and vegetables were just
12:09
amazing .
12:10
Again , and you can see some pictures of that at
12:12
jimsantosbooks . com blog
12:15
, or also look at our YouTube channel and
12:17
you'll see a little video of the Tuesday Market there .
12:19
And we really had a sense of
12:21
community there . We met a
12:24
couple of friends that we had known for
12:27
a few years , Todd and
12:29
Da Timon and we just
12:31
truly enjoyed seeing
12:33
them again , and they
12:35
brought us into their community of friends
12:38
. It was absolutely
12:40
a wonderful visit , so
12:42
I really think
12:44
that we could very
12:46
well acclimate there quickly
12:48
.
12:49
You know what was interesting about the expats
12:52
there ? There were a lot of expats , but
12:54
they were more integrated with the society
12:56
than what we ran to in Playa
12:59
Coronado .
12:59
Oh , absolutely Absolutely
13:02
. They were volunteering in the community
13:04
and their life was
13:06
not expat , expat , expat
13:09
. It was really
13:11
trying to immerse and
13:14
be helpful and enjoy
13:16
their surrounding .
13:18
A lot of great meals in San Miguel
13:20
. Also , I don't think we had a bad meal at
13:22
any restaurant . Oh no , it was
13:24
fabulous food Fabulous
13:27
.
13:27
Plus , we enjoyed just walking around
13:29
in the evening when it was cool , loved
13:32
the mercado , enjoyed
13:38
all the fresh fruits and vegetables . That was really
13:40
a half a block from us .
13:42
The locals also have a great sense
13:44
of community . There were random
13:47
parades just about every day . There
13:50
was some kind of music or dancing or entertainment
13:52
out in front of the many churches
13:54
entertainment
14:01
out in front of the many churches .
14:03
It seemed like it went from an indigenous play
14:05
or parade to a mariachi band . It was yeah , it was very enjoyable
14:07
.
14:09
On the downside in the historic
14:11
district , especially where we were , it
14:13
was rather noisy sometimes
14:16
, especially at night , and again
14:18
because of the heat , we had to have the windows open all
14:20
the time , so there was no real break from
14:23
the noise . In the area that
14:25
we were in , a lot
14:27
of people had what they call rooftop dogs
14:29
dogs that are
14:31
on the roof just basically to help protect
14:33
the home , to have not having people jump
14:35
from rooftop to rooftop and and come
14:37
down into the home , and these dogs
14:40
would bark or howl at odd
14:42
times of the night and one would set another
14:44
off and then you got a little chorus going . Also
14:46
, like you see in a lot of Hispanic
14:49
cultures , a lot of fireworks
14:51
a lot of firecrackers , a lot of fireworks .
14:53
We couldn't decide if it was celebrating
14:55
marriages , births or
14:58
divorces . We're not 100%
15:01
sure what was going on there , but , yeah
15:03
, a lot of fireworks .
15:05
Or just , hey , I got a bunch of fireworks yeah
15:09
, the fireworks during the day too , which
15:11
never made sense to me .
15:12
No , but having lived
15:15
in a resort town in Salinas , Ecuador
15:17
, we were kind of used to the fireworks
15:19
.
15:20
Yeah , and that way it was almost like being at home .
15:22
Yeah .
15:23
But something interesting this is my
15:25
first trip to Mexico . Rita , you've been a
15:27
couple of times years ago . Right
15:30
, and actually the election was
15:32
held the day after we left and you're
15:34
seeing in the paper about the bloody reaction
15:36
to the election and about , you know , writing
15:38
and all this stuff . But you
15:42
know , Mexico does have this reputation among
15:44
a lot of North Americans for being a place where
15:47
there's a lot of violence , but
15:49
it's not violent through
15:51
the entire country and that's
15:53
really important to keep in mind . A In
15:56
San Miguel , there in particular , we really
15:59
felt just completely safe . We were
16:01
walking around at night a lot . We were out walking
16:03
during a power outage on
16:06
these streets just using our cell phones for flashlights
16:08
and we really didn't
16:11
hear of , see or experience
16:13
anything that looked like it was
16:15
uncomfortable or difficult
16:17
.
16:18
Absolutely , it was very
16:20
yeah
16:22
, just like you were home , walking
16:24
in your neighborhood .
16:26
Yeah , so naturally you do have to be careful
16:28
wherever you are , you
16:30
know , and in American cities you have to be careful
16:32
what neighborhood you're in and how late you're out at
16:34
night and in those particular areas . But
16:36
it's important to keep an open
16:38
mind . Remember that Mexico and
16:41
other countries are not necessarily as
16:43
dangerous as they're portrayed in
16:45
the news . There's the saying
16:48
if it bleeds , it leads for
16:50
a reason . That's what makes the
16:52
news , that's what catches the eyeballs , so
16:55
it tends to be skewed in that direction
16:57
. You don't hear about those little festivals
16:59
that we saw . You don't hear about the people giving
17:02
up their seats for the elderly on the buses . You
17:04
know , that kind of stuff doesn't make the news . It
17:07
was very interesting to be there ourselves and to look around
17:09
, and I'd be happy to go
17:12
to San Miguel again or even some other place
17:14
in Mexico , wouldn't you ?
17:16
Oh , absolutely I enjoyed
17:18
that month . It was
17:20
hot , but there were so many
17:22
pluses that the heat
17:25
was doable .
17:26
Yeah , it was interesting to be sitting
17:29
there with all the windows open , sitting around in our underwear
17:31
and people walking by our door saying hola
17:33
, buenos dias .
17:34
I know we were talking to each
17:36
other . I thought , oh my God , you'd never
17:38
do this in the States .
17:41
Well . Lastly , in the expense column , how
17:43
are we doing in June so far ? Well , as
17:46
of June 10th , we were at $1,949.66
17:51
already for the month . I know that sounds
17:53
bad , but that includes almost $1,000
17:55
for 10 nights at an Airbnb in
17:58
Knoxville and we had
18:00
our airline and hotel expenses for our trip back
18:02
to the States because we had to juggle our
18:04
flights a little bit . Also
18:06
, for the rest of the month , in the first three weeks of July
18:09
we'll be cat sitting here in Carmel
18:11
, Indiana , and our only expenses will
18:13
be food and gas . So
18:15
the rest of the month of July we're visiting families
18:17
and friends . We're only looking at a few hotel
18:20
stays for the long road trip . So
18:22
the rest of the summer looks pretty good . That
18:25
is until we take off for Europe on August
18:27
the 6th with a plan that shoots our
18:29
budget all to hell and back . But we'll
18:31
keep you in suspense on that . For now , Rita
18:34
, how do you feel about what we've been spending so
18:36
far ?
18:36
Oh , I think we're right on target . I think
18:38
we'll balance out just what
18:41
we've planned at the end of the year . It
18:43
will balance out because we'll be
18:45
doing some pet sitting , we'll be doing
18:47
some RV renting
18:50
, we'll be doing Airbnbs
18:52
.
18:52
I think we'll be fine even
19:02
when we have gone slightly over budget , we're still spending less than we're making from
19:04
our social security and pensions and et cetera . We haven't had to
19:06
dip into any of our savings
19:08
for our regular living expenses
19:10
.
19:11
Plus the added income from
19:14
the sale of our house , what it's
19:16
earning us in long-term
19:18
savings plans .
19:20
Speaking of that , that's the other part of
19:22
our plan , not just spending 60%
19:24
to 70% of our regular income
19:27
. The goal was to also increase
19:29
the size of our nest egg by letting the proceeds
19:31
from our home sales generate income . Well
19:34
, the numbers are in for the first six weeks , the
19:37
last two weeks of April and the month of May , and
19:39
during that time we've watched the numbers grow
19:42
in our HYSAs , that's , high
19:44
yield savings accounts . So that part of
19:46
the plan is working very nicely . It's
19:48
been really gratifying to see that we can actually
19:50
make money while we travel . So
19:52
a couple of travel notes . I mentioned
19:55
last week we had some flight delays and difficulties
19:57
getting out of Mexico due to extreme weather
19:59
in Texas . The
20:05
excruciating details are also in the blog if you're interested , along with pictures of historic
20:07
Querétaro where we spent our extra day . But one thing went very
20:09
well for us this was our first time entering
20:12
the US using our new global
20:14
entry status . I think Rita
20:16
will agree that was a wonderful shortcut
20:18
.
20:19
Oh , absolutely , it took about two
20:21
seconds .
20:22
Yeah , it was great . We didn't
20:24
have to fill out any forms , we didn't have to answer any
20:27
questions , Didn't even have to take out our
20:29
passports . We just walked up to the
20:31
Global Entry kiosk , let it scan our
20:33
faces and bingo cleared for
20:35
entry . So if you
20:37
travel out of the US more than once or twice a year
20:39
, I highly recommend it . So
20:41
if you travel out of the US more than once
20:43
or twice a year , I highly recommend it . Now
20:47
, fortunately , also our American Express cards reimbursed us for the fee when
20:49
we applied for it , and I understand some other cards that focus on travel will do that
20:51
as well . Now we also
20:53
use TSA PreCheck , Although
20:55
in our little airport in Knoxville there's not much
20:57
difference in wait time , and in
20:59
fact we've noticed in larger airports so
21:01
many people are using it now that the lines
21:03
are almost as long . But
21:06
at least you don't have to strip and take your shoes
21:08
off and all that . So it's still totally worth
21:10
it , to my way of thinking anyway . Now
21:13
the other perk we upgraded our Amex
21:15
to use is airport lounges
21:17
. Now we've been in a few and
21:20
it really makes those two or three hour layovers much
21:22
more pleasant , Not to mention being able
21:25
to get free food saves you $50
21:27
or more over the cost of airport food
21:29
. How do you feel about those , Rita ?
21:32
Absolutely Cause . Sometimes you'll go
21:34
in and order something . Well before
21:36
before we had access to these lounges
21:38
. Go in and order your food and
21:40
you weren't sure you were going to get it , be able
21:42
to eat it and still make your flight , and
21:46
it was always $50 . So
21:48
here in these lounges , not
21:50
only do you get it's a buffet
21:53
, you get any food and drink that you
21:55
absolutely want . Plus , you
21:57
can charge your devices , get
21:59
them topped off , you could take a shower
22:01
, you could rest . It's just an
22:04
absolute wonderful deal .
22:06
You're not trying to sit on a little plastic chair
22:08
out in a group of people and balance
22:10
a drink on your knee while you're trying to eat
22:12
a sandwich and not drop it all down your shirt .
22:14
Right , yeah , right .
22:16
Yeah , it's been amazing to me how
22:19
big some of these lounges are too . When
22:21
you walk by them in the
22:23
terminals you just see a doorway
22:25
or maybe a person standing at the doorway , but
22:28
when you go into them , we've been in some that
22:30
just take up an enormous amount
22:33
of space . One of them
22:35
had a garden that was open to the outside
22:37
. You have a lot that have like outside
22:39
seating areas , couches
22:42
and lounges places you can take a nap . It's
22:44
really a great thing . If you're . You
22:51
know , like us , you're traveling a lot . You're going to be in
22:53
airports for a couple hours at a time , or even longer . It's a good idea to look
22:55
to see if one of your credit cards supports
22:57
joining . Yeah
22:59
, in our particular case , the American
23:01
Express Platinum card includes
23:04
membership and priority pass , which
23:06
gets you into certain lounges in
23:08
airports around the US and the world . But
23:11
then also be sure and look because , for
23:14
instance , if we fly on Delta Airlines
23:16
, we're not in the Delta Club
23:18
, but if we show our American Express card
23:20
, then we can still get into those Delta Clubs , provided
23:23
we were flying on Delta , it can show the boarding
23:25
pass . So there are other ways that you can
23:27
get into these other clubs and it's definitely
23:30
worth your while to check those out . So
23:32
, Rita , any final thoughts on our travel
23:35
and our lifestyle thus far , before we wrap
23:37
things up .
23:38
We're doing great . I'm excited
23:41
to start our adventure
23:43
again in Europe .
23:45
All
23:52
right . Well , that's it for this week's show . Thanks for listening
23:54

24:01
