When I do assignments for college, I like to put something on as background noise to drown out the yelling and music from the neighboring dorms. I had seen some clips of Theo Von’s podcast This Past Weekend and it looked like a decent podcast to fill the role of background noise. I put on his episode where he talks with Glenny Balls from Barstool Sports while I was doing research for a paper, and by 15 minutes into the episode all hope was lost for me getting any research done. Theo asks Glenny about himself and just within that first 15 minutes they would go off topic about things like what letter is the strongest, what a cheese monger is, and the most hilarious breakdown of clams, mussels, and oysters. I usually do not get into podcasts, but Theo Von brings a level of random, off-the-wall humor that kept me wrapped in and waiting to hear what would be said next. This Past Weekend is one of the best podcasts for college students needing good crude humor and a break from the stresses of college.Theo’s untraditional humor is my biggest draw to his podcast. Instead of making thought-out jokes and having routines, he tells short stories that rarely have much to do with the discussion, asks off the wall questions, and my favorite, his ‘Theoisms.’ Theoisms are Theo’s analogies that he makes, such as “Bees are Satan’s little German Shepherds,” and “Spring is umm… it’s when winter gets kind of lazy,” and my favorite “a hat is just a little apartment for your head really.” These lines are hilarious in context and are extremely quotable; perfect for a young college crowd. A good amount of his guests also appeal to this demographic really well, such as rapper Yung Gravy, comedian Bert Kreischer, and country star Lainey Wilson to name just a few that I find immediately recognizable. Theo has good chemistry with every guest I have seen him have on which makes them feel like a conversation between good friends. This Past Weekend also features a good amount of episodes and guests that also appeal to a somewhat older audience as well. My dad started watching the podcast after he had comedian/actor David Spade on. He has also done episodes with Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs, comedian John Mulaney, and professional wrestler Hulk Hogan to name a few that appeal to the parents of the college demographic. Theo himself is 44 years old, and it appeals to people in that age range as well. The way he interviews his guests makes it so that if you like his guest, you will like that episode of This Past Weekend. Theo Von’s This Past Weekend stays in the top 10 on Apple Podcast’s comedy podcast charts for a reason; it is funny, interesting, and appeals to adults of any age, but especially men in the 20-50 year-old range. For me it is a way to bridge the gap from what I enjoy at my age, and what he enjoyed when he was my age. I recommend this podcast for anyone who wants to listen to a good conversation and have good laugh.
