Knock knock! Who’s there?

It’s the podcast postman come to deliver the latest episode of The Two Rivers Café Podcast hosted by composer and lyricist Andrew Fisher, known to his friends as Andy. And to his enemies as Andy Grrrrr Andy.

In this episode Andy talks to Elizabeth Kenny, one of Europe’s most renowned lute players.

But first he needs to find out what we actually mean by a lute.

Answer: there’s no such thing as a lute. There are lutes.

Liz and Andy then discuss improvisation, learning and playing before collaborating on a brand-new musical piece that incorporates bits of Purcell mixed with music from video games and jazz. If that sounds a bit strange then you’re right, it is a bit strange but it’s also epic. And brilliant.

You can hear the piece towards the end of the episode.

In her illustrious career so far, Elizabeth has played with Les Arts Florissants and with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, made critically acclaimed recordings of Lawes, Purcell and Dowland, and regularly collaborates with singers such as Robin Blaze, Ian Bostridge and Nicholas Mulroy.
