No, I think it's more like... Uh,
0:07
Ry? You
0:13
good? Oh, I'm great. Thanks
0:15
for asking. Why does it sound like your mouth is farting? I'm
0:17
practicing my beatboxing because one of my
0:20
favorite YouTube musicians is coming by to
0:22
celebrate Autism Acceptance Month. Oh,
0:24
do you want some tips? I'm actually pretty good at it. Nah,
0:27
I got it. Alright,
0:31
well, I'm going to start the show. I'm
0:33
Pamela Kirkland. And I'm Ryan Willard.
0:35
It's Thursday, April 25th. This
0:38
is the 10 News. 10,
0:40
9, 8, 7,
0:43
6, 5, 4,
0:45
3, 2, 1.
0:47
April is Autism Acceptance Month. It's
0:50
a month to celebrate the contributions and
0:52
unique abilities of people with autism. Autism
0:55
Spectrum Disorder is a genetic mutation
0:57
that changes how a person's brain
0:59
develops. People with autism
1:01
communicate and learn differently and might
1:04
move differently or do repetitive behaviors.
1:07
Sometimes, you'll hear the term neurodivergent.
1:09
What does that mean? People with autism
1:12
as well as people with ADHD, people
1:14
with Down Syndrome, and people with dyslexia
1:16
are considered neurodivergent, which just means their
1:19
brains work a little differently than neurotypical
1:21
people. It's kind of like the
1:23
difference between computer operating systems. Macs
1:26
work differently than PCs, but both are
1:28
great. They're just different. People
1:30
with autism can also have
1:32
some impressive superpowers, amazing memories,
1:35
strength in subjects like math,
1:38
science, and engineering, and exceptional
1:40
honesty. Autism Acceptance
1:42
Month has been held every year
1:44
since 1972, although it was called
1:46
Autism Awareness Month for many years.
1:49
The name changed because the autism community
1:51
wants to move beyond appreciating differences to
1:53
inclusion and greater understanding of what it
1:55
means to be autistic. Awesome!
1:58
By learning more about the exp... of
2:00
people with autism, we can create spaces
2:03
and events that are welcoming and
2:05
accommodating for everyone. So what can
2:07
you do to celebrate Autism Access
2:09
Month? One of the best things
2:11
you can do is get curious. Find
2:14
out more about autism so you can
2:16
help your school, your teams, and your
2:18
family and friends be more inclusive. You
2:20
can go to local events and fundraise
2:22
for organizations near you that support kids
2:24
and adults with autism. And looking
2:27
for a good book to read? Check out
2:29
Ella Oddy. It's a book written and illustrated
2:31
by a person with autism all about a
2:33
fourth grader named Ella. Cool! Are
2:35
you a kid with autism? Do you
2:38
have ideas about how The 10 News
2:40
can do more to include you? Let
2:42
us know! Visit our website at the10news.com/contact
2:45

2:52
side note, but the trailer for
2:54
Transformers 1 just dropped. I
2:56
love the Transformers and Transformers 1 is
2:59
an animated origin story for
3:01
Optimus Prime and Megatron. Chris Hemsworth, who
3:03
you might know as Thor, is playing
3:05
Optimus Prime and Brian Tyree Henry, who
3:07
you might recognize as the voice of
3:09
Miles Morales' dad in Across the Spider-Verse,
3:11
will be playing Megatron. Scarlett Johansson and
3:13
Keegan-Michael Key are also in it and
3:15
if you want to see why I'm
3:18
so hyped, check the link in our
3:20
show notes. It's time to show them
3:22
we are more than meets the eye. Pam,
3:28
they're here! Wait, who
3:30
is where? Our special guests!
3:32
Cap's interviewing them right now! Oh,
3:35
you mean Pedal Steel Noah and
3:37
his family? Yes! Ah,
3:39
he's one of my favorite YouTubers. Let's listen
3:41
in! I'm very
3:43
excited to be here today with
3:46
the famous Pedal Steel Noah and
3:48
his brother Nate. He's
3:50
also joined by his parents Jay and Christine
3:53
and we're going to talk today about the amazing
3:55
music that the family does and
3:57
why. Yeah, I'm 16. My
4:00
18-year-old is old and my name is Noah. I
4:03
live in Austin and my name is Pelt
4:05
Steel Noah. Great. And
4:08
Nate, introduce yourself. I'm Nathaniel
4:10
Faulkner. On the basis of the
4:12
group, I am 13 years
4:15
old and I also lived in
4:17
Austin places. So Noah,
4:19
not all of our listeners may know what the
4:21
pedal steel is. Could you explain it? Yeah,
4:24
Pelt Steel is like
4:26
a 10-string lap steel
4:28
flat. It's got four
4:31
bars. It's got three pedals
4:33
on the bottom and three pedals on
4:35
the eye. Use your knees, use
4:37
your foot. Yeah, you
4:39
use the slide. Well, it does take
4:42
a lot of practice. And
4:44
then how did you get started with it? So
4:47
I listened to George Strait's gun
4:49
country music. You've been inspired by
4:51
some other music too, right? Yes,
4:54
definitely. Like
4:56
80s music. Now
4:58
Nate, your brother's in the band. Is it
5:00
fun playing with your family? It's
5:03
amazing. I love playing
5:05
guitar, playing bass. It's
5:07
so fun. And
5:09
I love playing with my family at the same time. Amazing.
5:13
Yeah, I like teaching him. Teaching
5:16
him a lot of stuff. He's teaching me
5:18
a bunch. And then tell us about your
5:20
dog because I saw on Instagram and some
5:22
of your YouTube videos that Cara seems to
5:25
be in the band too. Yeah,
5:28
Cara, she's like
5:30
a mascot. Okay, so Noah, you have
5:33
an album that just came out, Texas
5:35
Madness. What's it tired of? Well,
5:39
it's about my life, what
5:41
I like the most. And
5:44
yeah, some emotional music may help me
5:46
manage my emotions. Yeah,
5:50
emotional music. Yeah.
5:53
And why did you release it now? Well,
5:56
because I thought it'd be a good idea to
5:58
make it like a sound. track of my
6:01
life. And you also released it now
6:03
because you wanted to draw awareness to
6:05
autism, right? Yeah, autism
6:07
awareness. Yeah. Yeah. And
6:10
so you have autism? Yes,
6:12
I do have autism. And
6:15
what would you like our listeners to know about autism?
6:17
Sometimes I have a hard time talking
6:19
and a hard time listening. I
6:22
mean, like I had a hard
6:24
time being in like school and
6:27
I want to be homeschooled just
6:29
to like free my mind about
6:31
some genres and music to
6:34
flow in. Yeah. I think.
6:37
Yeah. If Nate's trying to say is be
6:40
patient. I think when
6:42
you have, you know, people,
6:44
autism, you need to be patient
6:47
with them and you
6:49
have to be kind,
6:52
always hear them through. Let
6:54
them explain themselves. Always.
6:57
Always listen and be patient.
7:00
That's two things I would give tips
7:03
to say. I
7:05
think that's wonderful. That's really wonderful. How
7:08
do you feel like music has helped you
7:10
express yourself? Well,
7:17
I feel proud and
7:19
I feel happy when people like my
7:21
music. Have you been surprised
7:24
by all the attention that you've
7:26
gotten on Instagram? Yeah.
7:28
Yes. How
7:32
about for mom and dad? How's that been for you? Always.
7:36
It's been awesome. It's,
7:41
you know, some of the feedback we've gotten from,
7:43
you know, big bands and like people
7:46
that we grew up listening to. It's
7:48
incredible to have that
7:50
sort of feedback coming, especially to
7:52
our kids. And their support is
7:54
huge. You know, it keeps
7:57
us motivated to keep making songs every day.
8:00
The boys have done a song a day for
8:02
over a year now. Wow.
8:05
So we're just going to keep doing it
8:07
because it seems to be, it has
8:09
a positive impact for a lot of people. We get
8:11
a lot of feedback that... We've
8:14
just tried to do, we heavily
8:16
influenced by Temple Grandin in which
8:19
he said he's trying to find
8:21
our kiddo's strength and really give
8:23
them as much
8:25
support as possible. And so that's
8:27
kind of, if we could say anything about
8:29
awareness, that would be the message just that
8:32
everyone has beautiful gifts. They
8:34
deserve to be shared and unlocked. And
8:37
some of us just need more support than
8:39
others. So, and be patient. I
8:43
love that. One last question for you,
8:45
Noah. So you just finished
8:48
being at South by Southwest. You have
8:50
this amazing album that just came out.
8:53
What's next? Well,
8:56
probably it might be going on
8:58
tour or something. I
9:01
am waiting for an epic summer in 2024.
9:05
A big, big, epic summer. That
9:09
is great. Perfect. Alright, thank you.
9:11
Thanks so much for joining us Noah
9:13
and Sam. It was an honor having
9:15
you here. If you want to check
9:17
out more of Pedal Steel Noah's stuff, check out
9:19
the link in his YouTube channel in our show
9:22
notes. Welcome
9:27
to the trivia room. Oh, to
9:29
the wind. How are you? Hi
9:31
Pam. I'm good. Thanks.
9:34
What's up? Ryan's currently fanboying over at
9:36
Pedal Steel Noah. I thought I'd come by
9:39
for some trivia. The throne is ready for
9:41
you. But are you ready for the throne?
9:43
Oh, you better believe it. What
9:48
is going on here?
9:58
In honor of Pedal Steel Noah. To your Noah's
10:00
visit, I want to do a little
10:03
trivia about the 28th state in the
10:05
US, Texas. Which city in
10:07
Texas holds the title of the
10:09
live music capital of the world? Is
10:12
it A. Austin, B.
10:15
Houston, or C. Dallas?
10:17
Hmm, never been to
10:20
Dallas. I'm gonna go with
10:22
B. Houston. The answer is...
10:27
A! Austin's
10:30
official city slogan calls it
10:32
the live music capital of
10:35
the world and is home
10:37
to many great artists. But
10:39
that's not all. Austin is
10:41
also the capital city of
10:43
Texas. Aw man, I should have
10:45
known. You know, I go to Austin for
10:47
the barbecue, but I'll go for the barbecue
10:49
and the music next time. Thanks for playing,
10:52
Pam! Thanks for having me, Owen. Tenors, if
10:54
you have a great trivia question or want
10:56
to sit on the trivia throne, leave us
10:58
a message at 877-10 News and we might
11:00
have you! Okay,
11:07
pedal steel Noah inspired me. Check this
11:09
out. Wow,
11:15
that was pretty good, Ry. Let me
11:17
have a try. Um,
11:23
Pam? That was
11:25
amazing. How did you do that? Practice,
11:27
practice, practice. Also, I
11:30
listened when someone offered to
11:32
teach me. Yeah, that tracks. Want
11:34
to teach me? Of course, right after
11:36
we give 10 new snaps to one of our listeners.
11:39
But first, here's a quick note for
11:41
the grownups. Time for
11:43
10 new snaps. A
11:47
tenor named Lilah072513 left this review
11:49
on Apple Podcasts. The
11:52
10 News is amazing because I can actually
11:54
understand what's going on because you explain it
11:56
so well, but I would like more and
11:59
love the 10. 10 Things You Need to
