Hey Ryan, happy almost earth
0:04
day. What up pamela, pamela, pamela,
0:06
pamela, ahhh! Whoa,
0:09
Ryan are you okay? I'm good, it's just
0:11
hard to see you. Why are
0:13
you wearing eclipse glasses? Because
0:16
I miss the total eclipse and I refuse
0:18
to miss it again. Um, Ryan?
0:22
I'm fine, totally fine. So fine that
0:25
we should start the show. I'm
0:27
Ryan Willard. And I'm Pamela Kirkland.
0:29
This Thursday, April 18th. This
0:32
is the 10 News. 10,
0:34
9, 8, 7,
0:37
6, 5, 4,
0:39
3, 2, 1.
0:42
So if you just sit still and
0:44
don't move, you won't crash into anything.
0:46
I can sit still, but I cannot
0:48
promise to not crash into anything. Aren't
0:51
we celebrating Earth Day today? We are. Earth
0:54
Day 2024 is on April 22nd. It's
0:57
a day for humans to raise
1:00
awareness of environmental issues and to
1:02
promote eco-friendly practices. Do you
1:04
know how it started? Earth Day started
1:06
in the US in 1970
1:08
when Gaylord Nelson, a Wisconsin
1:10
Senator, and John McConnell, a
1:12
San Francisco activist, encouraged Americans to
1:14
join a grassroots demonstration to raise
1:17
awareness about air pollution, pesticides, and
1:19
toxic drinking water. Yep,
1:21
and it worked. More than
1:24
20 million Americans participated, and as
1:26
a result, the US government created
1:28
the Environmental Protection Agency by the
1:30
end of 1970 and followed up
1:32
with laws like the Endangered Species
1:35
Act, the Clean Air Act, and
1:37
the Clean Water Act. And
1:39
now, more than 190 different
1:41
countries around the world celebrate Earth
1:43
Day. Since we're going into
1:45
Earth Day, let's talk about some good things
1:48
happening with the planet. Solar
1:52
Power is smashing records in the United
1:54
States. A report from the
1:56
Solar Energy Industries Association showed that in
1:58
2020, 3.
2:01
Solar power accounted for most of the
2:03
capacity the U.S. added to its electric
2:05
grid. California
2:07
and Texas led the charge to a stellar year
2:10
which we hope continues in 2024. The
2:14
Earth's lungs are breathing a little
2:16
bit easier. Deforestation in the Amazon
2:18
has dropped to a five-year low.
2:20
Brazil, which has the biggest share
2:23
of tropical forests in the world,
2:25
has made great progress and eco-minded
2:27
President Lula announced a $204 million
2:30
reforestation fund to work
2:33
with their pledge to stop all deforestation by
2:35
the end of the decade. Now,
2:39
the theme for Earth Day 2024
2:41
is Planet versus Plastics, which aims
2:43
to raise awareness of plastic pollution
2:45
for the sake of humanity and
2:47
planetary health and demand a 60%
2:49
reduction in the production
2:51
of all plastic by 2040. The
2:53
goal is to reduce single-use plastic
2:55
consumption, demand an end to fast
2:57
fashion, invest in technology that can
2:59
reduce plastic use, and push for
3:01
a strong U.N. treaty on plastic
3:03
pollution. High the
3:06
end of June 2024, the EU
3:08
is required to finish the
3:10
packaging and packaging waste regulation,
3:12
which is the world's biggest
3:14
attempt to crack down on
3:16
microplastics leaking into the environment.
3:18
In the EU, some packaging
3:21
will be completely banned, and
3:23
by 2030, all packaging material
3:25
must contain recycled material. We
3:27
hope to see efforts like this from the U.S. and
3:30
China, so if you want to join in on the
3:32
fight against plastics this Earth Day, check out our show
3:34
notes for some links to help you get in need.
3:40
Did you see the solar eclipse? The tenors
3:42
might have, but I did not. And
3:44
I can't see much of anything with
3:46
these glasses on, and I'm still wrapping
3:48
my head around what exactly an eclipse
3:50
is. A solar eclipse is when
3:52
the moon passes between the sun and Earth,
3:54
blocking all or part of the sun. On
3:56
April 8, 2024, a total... All
4:00
solar eclipse tracks from south central
4:02
Mexico all the way
4:05
up across the United States to
4:07
northern Maine. In a total
4:09
solar eclipse, the sun was completely
4:11
blocked causing a period of darkness
4:13
and was even up to four minutes
4:15
in New Jersey. The eclipse's
4:17
path of totality crossed directly
4:20
over 44 million people making
4:22
it the biggest eclipse crowd
4:24
ever for North America. I can't
4:26
believe I missed it. Well, you're in
4:28
luck. Bridget Todd is here to give
4:30
us a recap. The Bridget Todd? Where
4:32
is she? Right over here. This
4:36
week, there was a solar eclipse. That
4:38
means the moon traveled in between the earth and the
4:40
sun. And I traveled
4:43
all the way to Mazatlan, Mexico to
4:45
see the eclipse in what's called the
4:47
path of totality. That
4:49
means the moon was directly and exactly in
4:51
between the sun and the earth for
4:53
about four and a half minutes. That
4:55
was my first time seeing an eclipse in this world. Now
4:58
I have been told that it's really cool. It
5:01
kind of looks and feels like it does when it's nighttime.
5:04
The sky gets all dark. It gets
5:06
really quiet. The birds stop chirping. And
5:08
it's like somebody just turned the lights all
5:11
the way down. Only it's
5:13
not happening at night. It's happening in the middle of
5:15
the day. You didn't have to go all
5:18
the way to Mazatlan, Mexico like I did
5:20
though because you could see totality from parts
5:22
of Vermont, New York State, Ohio and Texas.
5:24
As long as it wasn't too cloudy that
5:26
is. But even if you don't
5:28
live in a state in the path of totality, you
5:30
might have been able to see the moon go over
5:32
the sun a little bit through special dark eclipse
5:34
glasses. This is really important.
5:37
You should never look at the sun without
5:39
these special dark glasses because you could hurt
5:41
your eyes. Oh my eye! You
5:43
shouldn't do it ever but especially you shouldn't do it
5:46
during an eclipse. I had
5:48
never seen a total eclipse before and it
5:50
felt like the entire city, kids, grownups,
5:52
and everybody went down onto the beach
5:55
in Mexico to wait for it and
5:57
watch. As The moon slowly broke, the
5:59
moon fell. In front of a sudden. The.
6:01
Entire beats got darker. Color.
6:05
It. Serves a feel like it does
6:07
ministers the air cooler and they
6:09
were weird said it was everywhere
6:11
and noon when the moon. Was
6:13
finally directly over the sun.
6:15
We. Were in totality. At
6:20
the time of when. Of
6:31
high. Went to describe it but I really don't
6:34
have them. It's
6:37
the most beautiful thing I've ever
6:39
seen. It was so beautiful. See
6:43
my both the longest and the shortest
6:45
four minutes ever. I. Didn't want
6:47
to end. But it did and
6:49
and we all have to put our special Eclipse
6:51
glasses back on. Because. The moon
6:53
was slowly uncovering the sun. Ah,
7:00
Beautiful as. Beautiful as
7:02
he accepts was probably the best part
7:04
was just wanted to get down the
7:06
beach with so many people. some of
7:08
them traveled from all over just to
7:10
watch this One Access performance. And
7:13
it reminded me of when I was a little kid. When.
7:15
I was a kid I love with Nip at the
7:17
Sky. I love to laying on my
7:19
back looking up at the stairs, watching meteor showers
7:22
and looking for planets. And out
7:24
on the beach during the Eclipse, we were
7:26
all little kids looking up at the sky
7:28
in wonder. Back. To you Ryan. Thanks.
7:33
So much for stopping by Bridget,
7:35
She's already gone. Ryan: Ah yes
7:37
Miss. Excuse.
7:41
Me: I hear a human
7:43
with small feat. identify yourself
7:46
Korea. Cousin and was already
7:48
trivia when. Oh cool. It's two
7:50
doors down the hall. Pokes. World
7:56
of them to the disproven. Hi
8:00
Julia Home soon says he came to
8:03
visit when a cool from. What
8:05

8:07

8:09
Whoever sits on the throne has
8:12
to answer the question. I'm
8:26
not sure if you notice Talia
8:28
the I'm a big fan of
8:31
trees. They do so many cool
8:33
things. They provide shade, improve air
8:35
quality, and even help fight climate
8:37
change. But. You
8:40
know how many trees are offering each
8:42
person on earth? Is
8:44
it approximately a A hundred
8:46
trees per person? be to
8:49
seventy seven feet per person
8:51
or see four hundred trees
8:54

9:02

9:08
