In an unforgettable encounter, Heide ran into a young doctor outside the ICU who lacked any sense of empathy, it appears that that she had once faltered in predicting a patient's positive outcome. Rather than risking another misjudgment, the doctor looked to shroud every prognosis in pessimism, extinguishing the faintest glimmer of hope for this patient and his family. Heide Disregarded her comments and couldn't help but probe the absence of empathy in the doctor's approach. Leaving her with one parting request “Doctor may I at least hope?” " From then on she only asked the nurses for updates: the frontline experience often provides a richer, more empathetic understanding of a patient's condition and journey toward recovery.
