My special guest on this episode of The Music Mind Podcast is a professional trombone player and long time Los Angeles based studio musician Alan Kaplan.

Alan has played on over 1000 movie soundtracks, countless television productions, live performances and recordings with some of the biggest names in the music industry. He toured with the famous Buddy Rich Big Band and with the Harry James Band for several years.  Buddy Rich and Harry James are regarded as genuine legends in the history of jazz and virtuoso talents on their respective instruments being drums and trumpet.

Alan also had the opportunity to meet and record with perhaps the most famous name in pop music and song writing across the past 60 years, Sir Paul McCartney of The Beatles' fame.

The conversation covers a wide range of topics including reading music, improvisation, doubling on multiple instruments, what is required to be a top session recording musician, the psychology of being an anonymous team player versus a front line soloist and many more fascinating subjects.  It is a rare opportunity to hear from a first call professional Los Angeles based session musician and learn how best to develop the skills required to play for the best composers, in the biggest studios, surrounded regularly by many of the greatest musicians in the world.

Finally viewers get to see and hear Alan perform a beautiful duet on tenor trombone with Brian Hayes on baritone saxophone playing an improvised version of the jazz standard 'Just Friends' to close out the conversation.

To learn more about Alan and the fantastic work he continues to do recording and performing in Los Angeles go to AlanKaplan.org.
