All right , so welcome back to the show . We are talking
0:26
today about weight
0:28
loss . We're talking about diet culture
0:31
and we're talking about how , you
0:33
know , certain diets could actually
0:35
be impeding your weight
0:38
loss goals . So what kind
0:40
of triggered me to have a chat about
0:42
this today on the show was I was talking with a friend
0:44
last week and she
0:46
was saying how she's gone
0:49
gluten-free . She started eating gluten-free
0:51
and she's put on
0:53
a lot of weight since she had her baby
0:55
and she thought it would be
0:57
the other way around , that she's breastfeeding and
0:59
that she thought the weight would drop off . And
1:01
you know she was doing really well before she had
1:03
her baby and we were talking about
1:06
different diets and things that she's tried
1:08
. And she was saying how she used
1:10
to do keto and she did really well with that and
1:12
then , when she felt pregnant , she had to stop doing that
1:14
. And it was just
1:16
an interesting conversation because she was asking
1:19
about gluten-free . She was asking about what
1:21
I do and it's
1:24
so interesting because there's
1:26
so many diets and I know I've talked
1:28
about this in the past , but there's
1:30
so many different diets and when
1:32
I studied to become a health coach , we
1:34
were encouraged to try a heap
1:36
of these different diets . Obviously , every diet
1:38
that I had to try all still had to be gluten-free
1:41
, but there's so many different diets
1:44
. There's so many different ways of eating . You know
1:46
, you might have heard of the keto diet
1:48
, you might have heard of the vegan diet , the high
1:50
protein diet , the low protein diet
1:52
, the high carb , low carb , like . There's
1:54
all these different ways that we can eat
1:57
, but at the end of the day
1:59
, the best way to eat is just
2:01
to eat real food . And
2:04
it's so funny because I'm
2:06
on instagram a fair bit and
2:08
I post on there and I look at what other people
2:10
are posting and sharing , and
2:13
so many people post this quote that
2:15
goes something along the lines
2:17
of people don't bat an eyelid when you
2:20
eat McDonald's or you buy
2:22
bakery food or you're eating
2:24
all this junk , but as soon as you start
2:26
eating healthy food , people
2:28
ask if you are on a diet
2:31
. Isn't that interesting
2:33
? Why do people question when
2:35
you eat healthy , but no one questions
2:37
when you're shoveling junk into
2:39
your mouth ? It's a
2:41
really funny concept that
2:43
we've now got to this point where people
2:45
don't think it's normal to
2:48
eat well and to eat healthy . So
2:50
what I love to do is
2:53
just eat well
2:55
majority of the time . And when we talk
2:57
about eating well , what are we talking about
2:59
? It's basically eating
3:01
real food , and people
3:04
think it's hard , but it's really not
3:06
that hard . And when we look at a
3:08
gluten-free diet , it's actually
3:10
easier to eat a
3:12
healthy , gluten-free diet . When
3:14
we focus on these
3:16
real foods and when I
3:18
say real foods , I'm talking about low
3:20
process , so hardly any processing
3:23
involved in your food is
3:25
the best way to eat . And
3:28
another thing that I find is
3:31
people discover how much money
3:33
they can save when they
3:35
eat less processed food . And you know
3:38
you've probably heard this all the time oh , it's so expensive
3:40
to buy , you know , fresh food
3:42
and healthy food , but
3:44
it's actually cheaper . So if you start
3:47
buying more real
3:49
food and less packaged food
3:51
, you will find that your
3:53
grocery bill is less
3:56
and you'll be feeling better
3:58
. You'll probably lose weight because you
4:00
aren't eating processed junk , which is generally
4:03
full of , you know , sugars
4:05
and like bad
4:07
fats , things that aren't going to do
4:09
your body any good . You know , most
4:12
of these processed foods that people buy are not
4:16
full of any nutrition . They're not good for us . They
4:18
. They're just there to make us feel
4:20
good because , you know
4:22
, we get that endorphin , we get that release
4:25
of that feel-good hormone
4:27
, that we eat something and
4:29
we feel good . But
4:32
when we stop eating that way , we
4:34
start to feel better all the time
4:36
, rather than when we just eat these
4:38
types of foods . Isn't that interesting
4:40
? So you know , so
4:43
many people reach out to me and say , like
4:45
I just feel like everything
4:48
is just about eat this processed
4:50
food and eat that processed food . I'm like , yeah
4:52
, that's what we've been taught , that's what
4:54
we've been told by society
4:57
, by different celiac organizations
4:59
are pushing these unhealthy
5:01
products because they're endorsed
5:04
, they've got the gluten-free label on them , but
5:06
they're not good for us , there's no benefit
5:08
to them . So what
5:10
I love to teach my clients is focusing
5:12
on adding in food
5:15
that is actually valuable
5:17
to your body . Think of what
5:19
you do as an investment in
5:22
your health and your future self , because
5:25
it's all about the
5:27
way you feel now and the way you
5:29
feel in the future . If you keep fueling
5:31
yourself with healthy , nourishing
5:34
food , you are going to live such a
5:36
different life to if you continue
5:38
to constantly eat packaged foods
5:40
. And I'm not talking about cut them
5:42
out completely , I'm talking about a balance
5:45
. And you know I've talked about the
5:47
80-20 rule before , where 80%
5:49
of the time you focus on eating really really well
5:51
and eating really healthy , and 20%
5:53
of the time you know you have these things
5:56
that you know might be deemed as treats
5:58
or that you eat and enjoy
6:00
without feeling guilt , because it
6:03
can become obsessive not to eat some
6:06
of those things . So I love
6:08
to have balance in my life . You know it was
6:10
Mother's Day yesterday
6:12
and we went out and we enjoyed a bottle
6:14
of wine , and you know that's balance
6:17
. It's not like I drink a bottle of wine every single
6:19
day , it's every now and again . And it wasn't just me
6:21
drinking , it was my husband and I . We shared a bottle
6:23
of wine . So you know it's not
6:26
about all or nothing , it's about having
6:28
that balance and enjoying life
6:30
. But if you're finding
6:32
that you're trying different diets
6:35
, what happens is people go on
6:37
diets and and you go
6:39
off the diet Okay . So
6:41
if you've ever seen
6:43
anyone that's a yo-yo dieter
6:45
, they go through this stage
6:47
where they try different things . So they'll try this diet
6:49
and they'll lose all this weight and then they
6:51
go back to how they used to eat before and
6:54
they put the weight back on . This
6:56
is not healthy . This is actually really
6:59
bad for not only your hormones but also
7:01
your metabolism and your mindset
7:03
. It can drive you crazy . So
7:06
what I love to do is I love to
7:08
help people get to a point where they're never
7:10
diet . They're never on a diet , ever
7:13
again . They're just eating
7:15
well and focused on adding
7:18
in good , healthy food
7:20
. It's such an enjoyable
7:22
way to live . I find it so
7:24
interesting when people ask me about diet
7:26
culture and ask me about what the best
7:28
diet is , because I never
7:31
, ever give my clients diets . The
7:33
only thing that I get people to do every
7:35
now and again is a detox or a cleanse or
7:38
an elimination program . These
7:40
are for a result
7:42
. These are for a reason
7:45
. These are not to just quickly lose weight and
7:47
put it all back on . Okay , these are
7:49
very , very different to going on
7:51
a diet . So a diet is
7:53
something that I would never
7:55
recommend to anybody . And
7:58
when I see people get that
8:01
gastric sleeve put on , so
8:03
they go and get a gastric sleeve and
8:06
this is like
8:08
a last resort for a lot of people , right , so
8:10
they get the gastric sleeve and then they
8:13
lose weight because they cannot eat
8:15
as much food as they used to
8:17
. But what happens is these people
8:19
generally get so used
8:22
to eating the foods that
8:24
they've always eaten and they still
8:26
eat that way . So what
8:28
happens in time is they put the
8:30
weight back on slowly . I know
8:32
of multiple people that have done this and
8:35
it's heartbreaking to see because they've gone
8:37
through some major surgery to
8:40
achieve a goal . But
8:42
it means nothing if they haven't dealt
8:44
with the mindset , because living
8:47
a healthy lifestyle starts
8:50
in the mind . So if you
8:52
can make that shift in your mindset
8:54
to eating well and looking after
8:56
yourself is very different
8:58
to restriction and missing
9:01
out and feeling left out . It's such
9:03
a different way to live
9:05
and I honestly
9:07
see true health
9:10
freedom in people
9:12
and people that you know
9:14
take themselves so far
9:16
away from this diet culture that
9:19
it is life-changing . It is absolutely
9:22
life-changing . If you are stuck
9:24
in that rut of constantly
9:26
dieting or constantly trying the
9:29
next new thing , this
9:31
is such a different way
9:33
to live and , like
9:35
I said , you never feel like you're on a diet and
9:37
you never feel like you're
9:39
going to stop something . So there's not like
9:41
, oh , I've got to eat this food
9:43
for this period of time and once I've lost this
9:46
10 kilos or you know however
9:48
many pounds , then you can go back
9:50
to living your life how you lived it before
9:52
. That's
9:55
not healthy . That's not a good way to think
9:57
. So it's adding
9:59
in more of the good stuff . It's adding
10:02
in more healthy , nutrient-dense
10:04
food that fuels you and makes
10:07
you feel amazing and pushing
10:09
out those inflammatory foods that make
10:11
us feel rubbish . You know people that complain
10:13
that they've got sore knees , sore joints
10:16
, their wrists hurt . You know they've got
10:18
no energy . They feel like
10:20
rubbish . You can look
10:22
at their diet and you can see a huge
10:24
correspondence in their food
10:26
to the way that they are feeling . So
10:29
if you've gone gluten-free and you
10:31
still feel this way and you still
10:33
feel that you know you've
10:36
got these pains in your knees it might
10:38
not be anything to do with gluten . You might
10:40
be struggling with a lack of collagen
10:43
. You might be feeling a lack of energy because
10:45
you're not getting enough nutrients . You might be eating
10:47
a lot of calories but it's not nutrient-dense
10:50
food that gives you that energy . Now
10:52
I've done a three-part series on
10:54
macronutrients so fats , carbs and
10:57
proteins and I talk about the balance
10:59
of eating those . So you can go back and have
11:01
a listen to those episodes . I'll link
11:03
those below for you to check out
11:05
and that might just give you some idea
11:07
of how to get started and what to focus
11:09
on , because even if you don't
11:11
want to lose weight , you just want to eat well
11:13
and focus on your health . This is a really
11:16
great start . And then , of course , if you
11:18
want my support , you can reach out to me as
11:20
well . If you want to work with me with
11:22
coaching , I'm more than happy to have a chat with you
11:24
about what that looks like . But
11:27
it is a
11:29
new way of living . That shouldn't
11:31
be new , it should be normal and
11:35
this is how people used
11:37
to live and you think about it like my husband and I
11:39
talk about it all the time . Growing
11:41
up as kids , you know meals were very
11:43
simple . We had , you know
11:45
, as children it was like meat and three veg
11:47
. He was the same . He grew up in a household
11:49
where they ate a lot of fresh
11:51
food . You know his dad was a cray fisherman
11:54
. They lived on seafood . They
11:56
ate homegrown vegetables . You
11:59
know there was the opportunity for them to go hunting . They ate a
12:01
lot of kangaroo and you know there were so
12:04
many opportunities for them to eat fresh
12:06
food and they didn't live
12:08
anywhere near fast food restaurants
12:10
. So it was not an easy option for
12:12
them and for me . Growing up , we
12:14
didn't have much money . My mom was
12:17
a solo parent and
12:19
she didn't have a lot of money , so we
12:21
didn't eat junk . It was not
12:23
an opportunity for us to go and buy takeaway
12:26
. It was like a very , very rare treat
12:28
, whereas people are doing this constantly
12:31
. They eat takeaway all the time . They're
12:33
eating processed food because they're time
12:35
poor and they think it's easier . But
12:38
there are meals that you can make that are quicker
12:40
to make than buying takeaway
12:43
. I'm serious when I say that and
12:45
I know you're probably going yeah sure
12:47
, belinda , like I've got to go shop , I've got to
12:49
prep for the food and shop for the food . You can
12:51
do home deliveries if you don't have time
12:53
. You can get food delivered directly
12:55
to your door . You can cook
12:57
meals in under 20 minutes . I
13:00
promise you that . So start
13:02
with super basic meals . You know some
13:05
sort of meat if you're a meat eater , and some
13:07
vegetables or a salad . It doesn't have
13:09
to be , you know , fancy and
13:11
gourmet , it can be simple to
13:13
get you started . So you know
13:15
I do have a complete meal plan program
13:18
that's available . Meal plans made easy , completely
13:20
100% gluten free . I'll also link that
13:22
below . You can check out that's got super
13:25
easy meals in it and I teach people
13:27
how to cook once and
13:30
eat twice , which basically means when
13:32
you are cooking , cook extra , cook
13:34
more so that you have leftovers
13:37
. Leftovers are amazing for
13:39
time . Poor families , I know . For
13:41
me we are so busy but
13:43
I cook as much as possible
13:45
. There are nights where we still get takeaway
13:48
every now and again . It's not very often but
13:50
it is nice to still do it . But majority
13:53
of our meals are home cooked meals
13:55
. You know my daughter . She very
13:57
sporty . We're always in and out the car . I'm
13:59
dropping her off at work , picking her up from work
14:01
. We have to make life easy for
14:04
ourselves and those nights where we are in
14:06
and out the car , we do have simple meals . You
14:08
know , sometimes I do a lunchbox for my kids
14:10
where it's leftover meat chopped up with
14:12
some salad and some veggies and
14:14
you know , it's just . It's
14:16
just simple , easy meal
14:18
that we can grab and go and they can eat
14:20
it on the go , because sometimes that is the
14:22
only thing that they can do . So for
14:25
you it might be the same , but you can do
14:27
something really simple that doesn't
14:29
have to be cooked it can be leftovers that
14:31
doesn't even need to be heating up , heated up
14:33
. So there's options , there's
14:35
ways to make your
14:37
lifestyle easier and
14:39
your diet work for you , because
14:42
it's not about , you know
14:44
, living on processed junk and
14:46
living on food that doesn't make you
14:48
feel good . So start to
14:51
incorporate some healthy food into
14:53
your diet , if you're not already , and
14:56
just notice what it does to the way that
14:59
you feel , whether your energy levels change , whether
15:01
you sleep better at night . And
15:03
then from there you'll start to notice this
15:05
flow-on effect and I've done an
15:07
entire episode on this before how
15:09
your body will naturally
15:11
want to exercise more
15:14
or go out and be more active when
15:16
you have more energy , when you have eaten
15:19
well , and then , because you've slept
15:21
well , you will have that energy
15:23
as well . So it's just this beautiful flow and effect
15:25
that one thing affects the next thing , that
15:28
affects the next thing and , as
15:30
far as lifestyle goes , it just
15:33
becomes a way of life , it
15:35
just becomes who you are
15:37
and what you're known for , and
15:39
it becomes easier to
15:41
say yes to good food . When
15:43
you eat this way normally and
15:46
it doesn't , it doesn't feel
15:48
like a diet . So you know , reach
15:50
out to me if you want support in this area
15:52
, or go ahead and see if meal
15:54
plans made easy is maybe an
15:56
option for you just to get started down
15:59
this track . But yeah
16:01
, if you've got any questions or you want to have a chat
16:03
to me about what my coaching might look for you look
16:05
like for you rather , just send me a DM
16:08
over on Instagram . That's probably the
16:10
easiest place to have a quick , easy
16:12
conversation with me . So my
16:15
handle there is the healthy celiac
16:17
and , yeah , we can see what that might look like
16:19
for you moving forward . But I hope
16:21
this episode has helped . You see
16:23
that diet culture is over
16:26
. Skinny is out
16:28
and healthy is in . So
16:31
if you look at marketing these days , if
16:33
you look at what's being pushed in
16:35
our faces , we're not seeing
16:37
way thin models anymore
16:39
. We're seeing healthy women who
16:41
have a healthy body
16:43
standard , and that is what I want for you . I
16:46
want you to feel healthy and I want you to feel great
16:48
within your body . You've got this
16:50
one amazing life to live , so you may as
16:52
well live it to its fullest . So thank you
16:54
so much for tuning into today's episode
16:57
and I look forward to talking with you again on
16:59
the show next week . Have a great week . Talk to you then . Take
17:01
care .
