I´m instantly hooked to this show! The sound design is spooky with all the right frightening noises and hard-to-hear-but-when-you-do-your-blood-freezes hidden messages. Samantha is easy to relate to and the story has me excited from the start. I´ve already listened to the first 2 episodes twice, and I´m sure this show will come back to haunt me (he-he)
An excellent horror podcast with a very sharp 'real-world' edge underlying the horror. Well acted, structured, and great sound quality.
Gloom is an eerie tale of a radio journalist investigating a bizarre case invokving several people who contracted a mysterious ailment dubbed "the gloom."The plot moves along at a good pace, detailing the history of each victim, those responsible for 'treating' them and the radio host. The moments in which the gloom strikes and effects the characters is truly unsettling and the host's gradual and increasingly dangerous absorbtion into the case is tense. There are times that I wish the story developments were clearer or delivered differently but overall I found myself following each episode avidly. The production quality is very good and the whole show comes across as a polished effort. Hopefully Realm will provide more clarity as to whether there will be more seasons in the future or if this was just a one-off limited series, because I would absolutely delve back in for more.
This review includes spoilers :) The Gloom is very professionally done, with incredible voice acting and soundscaping. The story is about a newbie journalist, which sets it apart from the other "investigative journalist" stories in the genre. I really liked Sam and related to her on many levels. Especially her investment in the case was very believable and I felt like the political commentary in the episodes was important and in my opinion well done. That being said, the story and especially the ending left me mostly confused. I wasn't sure if the listeners perspective was that of a listener of Sams show or if we're listening to all of her personal notes in some other setting? Her sudden death also took some of the horror out of the story for me since I personally didn't quite get what the "monster" was. All I heard was screaming and "it's so dark and big". I might not have listened in the creepiest atmosphere, maybe that's why I didn't fully understand the scene. One last point, I know that in depth content warnings take a bit of time but I feel like some actual cws for some of the episodes could have been sensible. A big chunk of the main characters have severe mental health issues, so (explicit) talk about suicide isn't unexpected. But there's also a graphic autopsy of a teenager. And, since it's a fictional show that presents as real and is centered around schizophrenic people, an unreality warning would also make sense in my opinion.Honestly though, I really enjoyed listening to this. So if anyone who hasn't yet listened to this is reading my review, I hope those 3 points didn't make it come across as too critical. Also, I'd highly suggest checking out the show, if horror is your genre. <3
