What can I say? I love this podcast, Kristaps is a fantastic host with possibly the coolest accent out there and he delivers the show with a real sense of honesty. Being Latvian he has a unique perspective on the other side of the iron curtain. You’ve probably heard a lot of tales of what life was like in Russia and the other countries, some less true that others, The Eastern Border will set you straight, telling what life was really like for the people living there. It is meticulously researched, telling stories you’ve not heard before about living in the former Soviet Union - everything from family and childhood activities to corruption and tragedies. It’s not just a history show, it’s about the people, those who wanted to be part of the system and those who didn’t.With guests such as Dan Carlin and Mike Duncan you don’t have to take my word for it – this is quality podcasting.I can’t recommend the podcast enough, it’s important for people to get fresh perspectives and hear from stories from all sides, challenge their perceptions and seek truths. And remember comrades, Happiness is mandatory! This review covers the earlier episodes as I’ve not caught up yet – there are a lot of them!
Top notch, entertaining and very informative show on the History of the USSR from someone who really knows WTF was going on during the Cold War Era. Worth a listen and a subscription for History lovers of all types.
This a history and current affairs show about the Soviet Union and the countries that were once parts of it. It mostly focuses on geopolitics past and present, but there are some social history episodes in the mix too, which are just as fascinating. What sets it apart from many independent English-language history podcasts is its perspective. Kristaps Andrejsons, the creator of the show, is from Latvia and is fluent in Russian (in addition to Latvian and English), meaning that he has access to primary sources in their original language. As a host, he is acerbic, passionate, and always frank about his views on events and personalities. Not what you'd call an easy listen (it often resembles Dan Carlin's Hardcore History in terms of tough subject matter), but entirely worth checking out if you have an interest in this part of the world, the Cold War, and how its legacy influences contemporary events.
