1:29

from my mama and ah well

1:31

my really close friends and I'm

1:34

should error. With. My

1:36

mom I just see in her like

1:38

literally pay our bills on time via

1:40

a cousin who's pretty. Sturdy,

1:44

well off his and could get themselves. I

1:46

usually go from sold him as he knows

1:48

you know how to save hundred and vast

1:50

sums. I just his judgment. Or

1:52

mom. Why? Because.

1:55

I've seen her really.

1:58

She. is my financial advice She's the

2:00

finest advisor in my home and like

2:02

2:06

really manage Hey

2:10

y'all welcome back to the dough

2:12

2:16

ex-Mile and I'm going to be your business merger for the

2:18

week Yes,

2:25

ma'am Don't

2:30

2:40

I don't care what your cousin Nico said

2:42

he's lying you think he'd be driving that

2:44

broken-ass camera if he had 20 bitcoins He

2:46

can't even use Facebook No,

2:48

I'm joking. I'm joking It's just a little jokey

2:50

joke except about the Bitcoin because it's a highly

2:52

volatile asset and you could lose it all in

2:55

an instant But I am joking about being a

2:57

businessman. Y'all I have had a hard enough time

3:00

Not spending all my money on

3:02

fast fashion and ludicrous mocktails Okay,

3:04

but we have the special treat

3:07

for you today a real

3:09

business manager In fact, it's

3:11

my real business manager Everybody

3:14

give it up for the impress

3:16

of the expense reports the temptress

3:18

of tax returns Ladies

3:20

and gentlemen one of the smartest women

3:22

I have ever met the one the

3:24

only Belva and

3:27

a Quincy Belva

3:31

runs a phenomenal company out of

3:33

LA called abacus financial management They

3:36

help people like me creative entrepreneurs

3:38

and artists make smart financial

3:40

decisions. So we don't go

3:42

brazook Belva's

3:46

been recognized as one of the top business managers

3:48

in the game for years now She's

3:50

gotten awards from I don't know billboard

3:53

variety Hollywood reporter

3:57

the Los Angeles fucking time you

4:00

Yahoo! Okay, you name it, they

4:02

believe in the vision, okay? And they

4:04

should. Working with Belva has

4:06

been an absolute dream. And

4:09

today she's here to chat about managing

4:11

celebrities, helping me control my spending habits,

4:13

which they are out of

4:15

control, and the literal price of fame. Okay,

4:19

say hi, Belva. Hi! Okay,

4:22

so before we get started, we have a special

4:24

surprise for you. My producers

4:26

pulled together a little reel of

4:28

me talking about you on this

4:30

podcast. Oh! And I talk about

4:32

you all the time, or anything, or every

4:34

episode. But, okay, so let's give it

4:37

a spin. Rachel, roll the tape. My

4:39

heart is warm already, though. How

4:41

awesome. I

4:46

am so bad with money. It like pains

4:48

me to say how bad I am. So

4:50

I implemented the best business manager in

4:52

the world, Belva, who I love. And

4:55

so she has been amazing and wonderful.

4:58

I'm overthinking all the possibilities at Goats

5:01

RS. We talking goat wigs, goat rugs,

5:03

goat sour cream, goat yoga, okay? I'm

5:05

gonna talk to my business manager tomorrow

5:07

about it. Belva, get on the line.

5:09

We even got those debit cards that

5:12

you could tap instead of swipe, which

5:14

is really dangerous for me. You just ask

5:16

Belva, my business manager, it's just why I

5:19

got to tap. It's so quick. And then

5:21

I be using Apple Pay, like Apple Pay

5:23

for it. They not. So we

5:25

know from your Instagram that you track every

5:27

single purchase you make. God, Taylor, you're

5:30

truly my president. I wish I'm so

5:32

scared to do that. Oh my

5:34

God. Belva does though. Belva's like,

5:36

okay, really? Again, you just had fish sticks.

5:38

I'm like, but I love them. Aww.

5:47

I mean, I don't even know what to say to that.

5:50

Oh my God. That heart is so warm.

5:52

And you know, I love you too, Ex.

5:55

It's all an honor. It was all an honor.

5:58

It's all an honor. Yeah,

6:01

I love. Okay so what he the

6:03

velvet as my little love that it's

6:05

you Amidst all the other times Allied

6:07

cried to you and sucks you in

6:09

crisis sneezing. I like some of our

6:12

relationship. ah I

6:14

think we the summit of in

6:16

those small clubs rising you people

6:18

download tastes yeah it's Sears it's

6:20

last are a lotta laughter says

6:22

it's you know but also accountability

6:24

like my gonna have to be

6:26

scary it it is but as

6:28

it has to be to doesn't

6:30

have to be. And. You

6:32

know this. I'd never. once you do, I never want

6:34

to leave a shame. Because we are

6:37

all navigating the same called life together it

6:39

is hard and money as part of it

6:41

and so I hope this you feel that

6:43

but I'd so for the appliance at a

6:45

cause of i've ever get a taxi the

6:47

says. Stay. For were my friend. I'm.

6:49

Like okay haven't thought of us

6:51

are that the U S? ah

6:53

I'm and seven hundred and twenty

6:56

nine thousand say frugal my friends

6:58

others are having all my science

7:00

get tattoos. they're hoping that as

7:02

another reminder. listen I think I'm

7:04

not all colts are bad as

7:06

not all thought there must have

7:08

so Obama we use his eyes

7:10

is so of with a little

7:12

question. What the hell does is

7:14

when your money on this week like was

7:16

like the green the is purchase you have

7:18

like us spy movie with our for a

7:20

nice dinner sit money on the baby ah.

7:23

Ok, So as the question

7:25

quickly. Is I think you know

7:27

about a new house in June and I'm

7:30

renovating and decorating. So I bought

7:32

outdoor furniture, other outdoor. Dining

7:34

said, outdoor couches, etc so that was

7:36

pretty lofty. And then obviously the dogs,

7:39

the kids shoes, you know, all that.

7:41

Manning. Stuff. but yeah I think the biggest and

7:43

most like. Glancing was outdoor furniture I did

7:46

as when you know you a bad is

7:48

because I wonder what the farc uni farted

7:50

search for us. Allies

7:53

were just gonna have furniture inside

7:55

of a said no outside outside

7:57

furniture flush everything that you put

7:59

in that we gotta do that

8:01

alsace. Look, living in L A

8:03

is expensive enough. Honest development of the live

8:05

in L A. I'm going to enjoy it

8:08

on my that velma know I'm I'm absolutely

8:10

Or for that we get one life so

8:12

we don't live in a man and his

8:14

abs. Okay so for our listeners who don't

8:16

have the privilege of working with you on

8:18

a day to day basis, what exactly is

8:20

a big man's you could remember? I was

8:22

very. Anti remember how

8:25

was so scared I had so

8:27

much drama. Ah her. every

8:29

hour. That Steve. Harvey's businessman's

8:31

so. Medicine and the jeweler. As though you

8:33

know these ministers, it'll be in your money to

8:35

deal with us. You have no money. And I

8:37

was. I am and a black woman so hi

8:39

hello have. Trauma Fibroids some well as

8:41

the hair. Fight for a celeb. I

8:44

had a salad like ah okay I

8:46

was so scared but then it and

8:48

and then to sign a contract with

8:50

you and now I'm just like oh

8:52

Annie Belvin and a contract with me

8:54

every five years in our the site

8:57

as I sat of five years it

8:59

yet So what exactly is a businessman's

9:01

your for the people. So.

9:03

A business manager handles the day

9:05

to day. And long

9:07

term financial operations for.

9:10

High net worth individuals people They are.

9:12

Tame as your people who are often

9:14

travel rights so. Actors, writers,

9:16

producers are often onset location musicians of

9:19

is traveling the world. they don't have

9:21

a lot of time energy and probably

9:23

neither Skill sets of manage to get

9:25

financials rights whether it's bill payment south

9:27

in your commission so owes you money

9:29

who do you have money to a

9:31

most creative have this is as as

9:33

well so. There's also his operational. Things

9:35

that go and of businesses you had

9:37

to file taxes that pay roll this

9:39

bookkeeping. There's compliance. Things that need to

9:41

happen in your state or your city

9:43

and we handle that other day. To

9:46

day basis for our clients that

9:48

it's also like budgeting forecasting is

9:50

holding my clients. Accountable.

9:52

acts hey we have a budget this is what

9:54

we agreed to but they did this is that

9:56

this are doing this talk about it as figure

9:59

it out it's all also tax planning,

10:01

tax projections. Hey, I wanna buy

10:03

a boat. Okay,

10:07

let's figure out how to buy a boat. Or

10:09

no, we're not buying a boat until 2027. So

10:13

what should we be doing to prepare for that, right? I

10:16

liken it to a financial quarterback. So

10:18

I'm helping call the place. I'm helping deal

10:20

with your insurance provider, with your real estate

10:23

agent, with your investment person. I'm helping navigate

10:25

all those things, but it's still

10:27

up to you to do what you're supposed

10:29

to do. So I'm the quarterback, but every

10:31

one of the team has to play their

10:33

position. And I think that's very

10:35

important. I don't think

10:38

people understand the emotional support.

10:40

And maybe that's not every business manager because when I talk

10:43

to other people who have business managers, they're not. And I

10:45

think that's because you are a black

10:47

woman. But specifically, I

10:49

know you're a lot of

10:51

clients that you have are black. That's

10:53

not exclusively who you work with. But I always

10:55

was curious like what your clientele was like,

10:58

and can anyone get a business manager? Like,

11:00

do you have like specific qualifications, Belva? I've

11:03

always wondered about that. Yeah, so our

11:06

typical clients are actors, writers, producers, people

11:08

in the film and TV space, right?

11:11

They could be a costume designer, but typically

11:13

in the film and TV space. But there

11:15

are other business managers that focus on musicians.

11:17

Cause obviously Beyonce has a business manager, right?

11:20

She probably has a CEO, CFO and- Yeah,

11:22

it's Blue Ivy. Blue Ivy manages

11:24

the money. So

11:26

I primarily work in film and

11:29

TV and across the board, producers,

11:31

again, costume designers, et cetera. Our

11:34

client base is predominantly people in

11:36

the marginalized community. So people of

11:39

color, women, people part of the

11:41

LGBTQI plus community combinations of

11:43

those things. And it's intentional because

11:46

exactly what you said, money's very

11:48

emotional. And a lot of

11:50

time we find that people that are in

11:52

these marginalized positions have not

11:54

had access to information, have

11:57

had significant financial trauma. and

12:00

often don't have the right circle of peers

12:02

or friends to kind of use as a

12:04

sounding board for financial advice. I

12:08

also, because I am a person of color and I'm a

12:10

woman, I understand the

12:12

survivor's remorse mentality and having to

12:14

take care of your mother and your

12:16

uncle and your cousin. The black tax,

12:18

yeah. The black tax. Yeah. You know,

12:20

so I'm, because of that, and my

12:22

degree is also in sociology, so I

12:24

understand society and people and how they

12:26

navigate. Wow, now it

12:29

makes so much sense. I

12:32

just thought you were just smart as

12:34

fuck, and you are, but obviously you studied. I

12:36

mean, I am. You studied as well, yeah.

12:38

But so much of money takes

12:41

a high EQ, right? IQ is one

12:43

thing and intelligence is one thing, but

12:45

the emotional quotient is just as important,

12:48

especially for people in the marginalized communities,

12:51

because there's just so much trauma and

12:53

lack of information and lack of access.

12:56

And we always feel like we're trying to catch up. And

13:00

I understand it. I'm first generation high earner. I'm

13:02

a first generation people who went to college. And

13:04

I had no one to hold my hands to the process.

13:06

So it, for me, when I tell you it's an honor

13:08

to serve, I mean that with all of my heart. It

13:11

is an honor to serve, because I

13:13

know that we're helping create generational wealth so

13:15

that we know that our clients, kids can

13:17

go to college and their

13:19

parents won't die or leave this

13:21

planet without leaving them something behind and leaving

13:24

a legacy and a legacy. It's not just

13:26

money, but it's also just access and

13:29

information. That's

13:31

right, y'all. Belva is building legacies

13:33

out here. And that's not just

13:35

for me. Belva manages some serious

13:37

heavy hairs. When we come back, we'll

13:39

get her to name some names. See

13:42

you in a few. Hi,

13:48

everybody. Today I wanted to share

13:50

a revolution in hair care. So

13:53

I am always on the lookout for products that not only promise

13:56

the world, but actually deliver. And.

13:59

By that, I Mean, Claire, The textures and towns.

14:01

This isn't just any hair color

14:03

last sentence. It's a celebration of

14:05

all things vibrates. We're talking color

14:07

that doesn't just sit on your

14:09

hair, but invigorates it thanks to

14:11

a zero ammonia formula a Wish

14:13

with the dennis of Oregon and

14:15

olive oils. Clara textures

14:17

and town has changed the game.

14:19

It maintains crow definition and signs

14:21

making your hair feel pampered and

14:24

loved. We love that whether it's

14:26

natural or relaxed. and let's not

14:28

forget the choice of colors from

14:30

settled to both, There's a shade

14:32

for every mood and moment. Using

14:34

Clara taxes in towns feels like

14:37

reclaiming my time is simplified, my

14:39

here routine saving me those precious

14:41

minutes and Dallas is about more

14:43

than just looking good, it's about

14:45

feeling proud. And confidence transforming your

14:47

hair on your terms in the

14:49

comfort of your own home. It's

14:51

not the hair color you are

14:53

born with with the hair color

14:56

you are meant to be. Clara,

14:58

it's sell me. A

15:00

direct hit with a cringe memory of your thirteen

15:02

year old self and of nowhere and some the

15:05

panic sweating and laughing at the same time. No,

15:07

don't worry, don't worry. We all get that. Because

15:10

being an adolescent is one of most visceral

15:12

shared experiences we have as people and we

15:14

want to talk about it. Join

15:16

me and Bajarin my two friends Nevins,

15:18

Sophie on Pod Christ as we interview

15:20

celebrity guests and ah the joys and

15:23

horrors! Of being a teenager and

15:25

others moments made them who they are

15:27

today. New. Episodes of Progress Around

15:29

Now Where ever You Can Protests. Our

15:37

family, your other clients above are

15:40

drill either A D A's related.

15:42

I get really. Early

15:46

as is. You know whether the fonzie

15:48

it as a. mother

15:50

had some dog city manager top dog

15:53

balance i was there are some things

15:55

that are public that i can say

15:57

selling say others who was on

16:00

Insecure, Top Gun. He

16:02

is a client and really good friend. He's

16:05

become a brother to me. The

16:07

co-hosts of Entertainment Tonight, Nichelle Turner and

16:09

Kevin Frazier are my clients. And

16:12

I think those are the only ones that are actually

16:14

public, but we have tons of writers, names you may

16:16

not even know because they're behind the scenes, you know

16:19

what I mean, as well? But

16:21

yeah, that's all I can say. Yes, okay,

16:23

because we respect the NDA. So,

16:27

okay, Belva. So what's like your superhero origin

16:29

story? Because I would love to know, how

16:31

did you get a bizarrely

16:34

specific job, giving

16:36

me money advice? By

16:39

happenstance, I did not seek the entertainment

16:41

industry by any means. It is definitely

16:44

the hand of God saving me for

16:46

myself. I mean, quick origin story

16:48

is I'm from South Central LA, born and raised, it's

16:50

now called South LA, but when I was raised here,

16:53

it was South Central LA. And

16:55

my parents, my mother was, my parents were not

16:57

educated, but they were very big on education. So

16:59

I had education as a way out of

17:02

our surroundings, right? My

17:04

parents did not let me go to the local school. They

17:06

forced me to go to a small high school and

17:09

it was a business focused high school. So

17:12

it kind of just kind of fell in my lap. So my first job at

17:14

14, 15, I was doing

17:16

bookkeeping for a trucking company. All my friends were

17:18

working at McDonald's, no shade, we all gotta make

17:21

a living. But they were like, you know, working

17:23

at McDonald's, doing fries and I was doing

17:25

bookkeeping. So I was

17:27

like, oh my gosh, I'm making like double what my friends

17:29

are making. Huh, this is

17:32

awesome. So I kind of kept doing

17:34

that through, went to UCLA, kind

17:36

of kept doing a lot of bookkeeping and stuff

17:38

to get through UCLA. And I

17:41

actually love, I love money, I love numbers.

17:43

It's always been a skill set. I would

17:45

kick my sisters behind in Monopoly and she's

17:47

five years older than me and I was five and she was

17:49

10 and I'd be whooping her behind. So

17:52

it's kind of always just been a gift. I

17:56

graduate, I go work for a very big

17:58

company Out of college. And.

18:01

I physically and getting ill like

18:03

I am miserable. Ah, so I

18:05

quickly figure it out. I start to a

18:08

small business, accounting and bookkeeping for friends and

18:10

it's a sisters. Friends because again, she's five

18:12

years older than me and they have a lot

18:14

of her. friends have small businesses art started doing

18:16

that. And that as a

18:18

couple years I was like oh my god

18:20

I have a business. I. Still didn't

18:22

love it so acts others like me I

18:25

am minutes of really help people When I

18:27

was working for all these businesses that just

18:29

as a didn't it wasn't as bad as

18:31

working for the big company but I wasn't

18:33

saying that impact that I wanted to see.

18:36

Yeah cause you sell purpose German I for

18:38

one hundred percent hundred percent and literally. A

18:41

client seller my lap I ran into somebody

18:43

i'm at a school where to with a

18:45

wealth advisor of he said he's the do

18:48

accounting, a bookkeeping and us a gym rat

18:50

a party is that okay and I'm the

18:52

following week He says hey maybe I'm at

18:54

my office I've applied for you take all

18:56

about his office I looked up and it's

18:58

like this six eight die as a time

19:00

I follow sports and I was like oh

19:02

you place a the Lakers. Okay,

19:06

On a site such as your accounting a

19:08

book I did he play valve A you

19:10

know they are beyond the team every by

19:12

downplay he say they attack and other such

19:15

sure had no clue what I was walking

19:17

into I thought I was doing bookkeeping and

19:19

he had come from a small business mesmer

19:21

farm at an even of business management with

19:24

a safe flight it know what it was

19:26

a boon accounting and bookkeeping as are getting

19:28

his files is about to go big or

19:30

boxes for documents and I'm like why is

19:33

his life and says and you know why

19:35

is the sunsets. In here I'm doing bookkeeping

19:37

won't allow me to stop and as are

19:39

going through everything. And was

19:41

like oh my gosh, Well. My.

19:44

Gosh we enough life insurance is he

19:46

He'll have as much in savings and

19:48

have cigarette and say okay mechanism miss

19:50

many per year isa have more money

19:52

in savings. What's happening here? I'm sorry.

19:54

Kind of fell into what I thought

19:56

was gonna be a bookkeeping for a

19:59

loss As a. Later ended up being

20:01

like learning business management on my own.

20:04

Says I don't a lot of athletes. And

20:07

then I got my first. There came a

20:09

client who I'm. With a sports

20:11

caster silver the combination of sports and entertainment.

20:14

ah yeah yeah that kind of how I

20:16

sell insulin that a know with sad was

20:18

i heard of sad but i don't know

20:20

how to track with visual that in the

20:22

latest different things. And here we are funny. Years

20:24

later, Wow.

20:28

Oh My God. That Obama play Yoyo

20:30

Life Story on the day I am

20:32

I. Oh please please do. And

20:35

how closely do you. Work with

20:37

your clients over and not mean

20:39

you you like other mama so

20:41

much mean you I will call

20:43

you I We can talk whenever

20:46

we will talk about live you'll

20:48

companies who any them like We're

20:50

so close. But I'm curious to

20:52

know. Like is that case by case with your

20:54

clients The Zach I know with as is that

20:56

big like member when a renaissance I. Knew how

20:58

much money was in a come out of that a cat and

21:00

as a car. And other said you're my

21:02

third call today about his them and

21:05

it's. As above at

21:07

sea or three times as add to

21:09

that step aside and it as if

21:11

any hair and they have any any

21:13

yeah as I am valve the said

21:15

I am aware okay how Africa w

21:17

back to see it. Of I

21:20

think one of Heights is no. Are all

21:22

of us like that before the case By

21:24

case I will tell you. It. It's

21:26

case by case. But. I love

21:29

the insula see that we have

21:31

yeah, because so much as money

21:33

matters is emotional and so much

21:35

of it is not in a

21:37

spreadsheet. As what I

21:40

learn about you as a person because

21:42

we are in some it. Helps

21:44

me. Healthy with your

21:46

money Case my case I will tell

21:48

you. It. Is case by case.

21:51

But. I love the insula. See

21:53

that the has yeah because

21:55

so much of money matters

21:58

is emotional and so. The

22:00

it is not in a spreadsheet. And

22:02

what I learn about you as

22:04

a person because the Are internet.

22:07

Helps me. Help you

22:09

with your money. Yeah you gotta know

22:11

my my why You gotta know the

22:13

trauma behind it's the At Hinson behind

22:16

it he all of that you know

22:18

you know it's Christmas season and you

22:20

know I'm same size so does come

22:22

around October. Of others I've had. A.

22:25

Node signal a deal with our first. It

22:27

looks sort of you are paying the money

22:29

aside. Yeah yeah yeah yeah. So I thrive

22:31

as the like. I do my best when

22:33

there is a lot of intimacy with my

22:35

clients. right applies in a wireless Have players

22:38

that have kids they know my kids. We

22:40

go break bread the go to travel together

22:42

to your point other. do it for the

22:44

view. There's

22:46

something magical that happens in

22:48

those non business. Events

22:51

or. Places. There

22:53

will be health said. The thing is like. I.

22:57

Know everything about us, More.

23:00

Social. Security mother's maiden name and then

23:02

I also know how you spend your

23:04

money. I know you tell me your

23:06

value system is this but your money

23:08

is going to. that's. So. Help

23:10

me understand. I know if you have a bad

23:12

habit and over the strip club every Friday night.

23:14

I know. Listen

23:19

you guys. Salads? What? Ever.

23:27

We have Lots. Yeah, that's. Of

23:31

what I ah. You?

23:33

that? I mean. So I know so much

23:35

about soon based on how you spend your

23:37

money. Where you spend your money. That

23:40

it's It's very intimate and so for

23:42

me it's sales unfair for you not

23:44

to have inside in my life. Year.

23:48

Because. I know so much about you. I wanted

23:50

to know that I have two kids. I want you

23:52

to know that I'm divorce. I wanted a now that

23:54

I bought a house as because I feel like. A

23:57

lot to lose that the other p Like like

23:59

I said, okay. I have good sleep at night.

24:01

I love my kids. I love my home. I

24:03

got my dog, mom. I love all these things.

24:06

I'm not going down for the million dollars

24:08

sitting in somebody's bank account. I'm

24:10

not going down for the $10 million sitting in

24:12

someone's bank account. Not me. That

24:15

could be for everybody else, but not me. So I need

24:17

my clients to be invested in me the way that I'm

24:19

invested in them so that

24:21

the relationship is sticky and it stays.

24:23

It's meant to be a long-term relationship.

24:25

My first entertainment client from 20 years

24:27

ago is still my client. And

24:31

so this is not a move. This is not a,

24:33

it's not like tax. Like you hire some new taxes

24:35

and you can never see them again. No, no, no,

24:37

no. Yeah. So what

24:40

is the biggest area of growth, Belva? Now I'm going to

24:42

talk about me. You've seen in

24:44

my money move since we started

24:47

working together. Can

24:49

I tell a story and be very candid? No.

24:52

What are we doing? Belva,

24:55

I'm so scared. I don't want these people to get

24:57

knocked. I'm going to tell it. I'm

24:59

going to tell it. Okay, but you can not tell

25:01

it. I'm telling it. I'm telling it. You got

25:03

me on this podcast. I'm telling the story.

25:07

Simmer down. Simmer down. You

25:10

were taking a trip to Europe. Yes.

25:14

And you were like, Belva, I need to do

25:16

this, this, this, this, this, and that. I

25:19

need you to help me figure it out. And I said,

25:21

okay, what do you want to do? And you said, I want to

25:23

bring my friend. I want to do this. I want to go here.

25:25

And I said, you know what, X? I

25:28

want you to make your own budget. And you

25:30

were kind of a gas, like, what do I

25:32

pay you for? Why am I making my own

25:35

budget? I was gagged. I was like, Belva, I

25:37

don't want to do, I was a helpless, blonde,

25:40

white woman with blue eyes. I was like, ah,

25:43

why? But I paid you.

25:45

You should be doing this, right? Yes. But

25:48

there was something very magical about that

25:50

process that you did. Yeah, it was.

25:52

As much as you hated me for

25:54

it and thought I should have done

25:56

it for you. I

25:59

think there was something. magical about you actually

26:01

having to create your own budget and realizing

26:03

well actually because I was gonna be in

26:06

the UK where it's more yes yes yes

26:08

but that was that I opened her for

26:10

me because I was like whoa like when

26:12

I put the money together and then I

26:14

even did the configuration because I took me

26:17

and my two besties and we were celebrating

26:19

one of them her sobriversary which

26:22

I'm so proud of and so I was like

26:24

okay so then because I saw that amount of

26:26

money I was like okay so I need to

26:28

heat up these homies and we got to go

26:30

to these couple events for free and then this

26:32

homegirl she's a manager at this

26:34

restaurant so she comped the whole meal you

26:36

know like I was like okay so now

26:38

because baby you could put me in the

26:41

middle of the jungle and I'm gonna organize

26:43

like I I can rally the people right

26:45

so I was just like okay cool so

26:47

now we know this oh so we can

26:49

go to a stand-up comedy show we can

26:51

spread out all the little different stuff so

26:53

it was no it was a great and

26:55

we had the best trip

26:58

ever and you stayed in your budget

27:01

I stayed in my damn budget

27:03

on a trip to Europe please

27:08

when we get back some of her clients

27:11

wildest purchases hi

27:19

there it's Julia Louis Dreyfus you may know

27:21

me from my podcast called Wiser Than Me

27:23

where I talked to older women and get

27:25

their wisdom from the front lines of life

27:28

after season one airs I was amazed

27:30

by how many people told me our

27:32

show made them look forward to getting

27:34

older which is why I'm here to

27:36

talk about season two of the show

27:39

Sally Seals, Billie Jean Kane, Beverly Johnson,

27:41

Ina Garten, Bonnie Ray, just in the name of

27:43

you and of course my 90 year old mom

27:45

Judy all hail old

27:47

women Wiser Than Me season

27:49

two is out now from Lemonado Media

27:54

did you ever get hit with a cringy memory of your 13

27:57

Year old self out of nowhere and suddenly your

27:59

panic squeal. Wedding and laughing at the same side. Don't

28:01

don't worry, Don't worry. We all get that. Because

28:04

being an adolescent is one of most visceral

28:06

shared experiences we have as people and we

28:08

want to talk about it. Join

28:10

me and Dad you in my two

28:12

friends, Nevins, Sophie on Pod Crushed as

28:14

we interview celebrity guests about the joys

28:16

and horrors. Of being a teenager

28:19

and how those moments made them who they

28:21

are today. New. Episodes of Progress

28:23

Around Now Wherever You Guys are Podcasts.

28:28

So. As a have a Gc

28:30

question for you about lose lead Still

28:32

most ridiculous thing a client has ever

28:34

tells you they're buying. And what's the

28:37

most ridiculous thing? you've convinced that client

28:39

not to buy. So.

28:42

Was clients one at a

28:44

basketball player funding his musical

28:47

career. Okay, lump. That's

28:50

the end of the pie. Yeah

28:53

wow they love to wrap. Ah it

28:55

was sacked for the sack. The a

28:57

will not let. Me

29:00

have like. So.

29:04

What does ahead of summit of musical career

29:06

and otherwise? Oh my God. This as a

29:08

to be couchsurfing in a mattress five years

29:10

it's gonna be awesome. Because

29:13

the opposite he also went to be

29:15

like Id to pay for for rail

29:17

i'm not once and for outside world

29:19

one point five millimeter you know? Yeah

29:21

yeah I'm already. did I do not

29:23

play all Silva novel was he added

29:25

rapper. I

29:28

have no comments. Alcohol as next next.

29:32

Next wonderful want to get a jet and

29:34

I I said that they'll ever played the

29:36

wants to buy a boat and I said

29:38

yes but I said we have to wait

29:41

until. X, Y and Z

29:43

Habit has about is not a yacht, about a

29:45

silver expensive the upkeep on amazon or know why

29:47

people live in and yeah yeah why people live

29:49

in them as exhibit A definition of a lot.

29:52

So many seat long that. Although, remember what

29:54

it is out. Of that it was just

29:56

adjacent to a young mother is actually part you

29:58

could afford. This is easy to. But you

30:00

told me you want to retire you told me these other

30:02

things so that I had to make sure We

30:05

do these other things first So once

30:07

you sell something else or something else goes then we

30:09

come back and revisit it So I think we'll be

30:11

buying his junior yacht in a

30:13

couple years. Okay, nice. And

30:16

then the other person. Oh, you mentioned a jet Yes,

30:18

jet. No, we're not doing that. Get out of

30:20

here. You can fly commercial. You can fly a

30:22

commercial get out of here Get out of here

30:26

Belva You can fly

30:28

commercial. Here's the other thing when you fly

30:30

commercial There are so many

30:32

tools that help you get on the

30:34

plane First like you can

30:37

skip TSA all together I

30:39

know we all have pre-check and global entry,

30:41

but when you have real paper, you can

30:43

drive a BMW straight to the plane, right?

30:47

And so let's spend our money that way. Let's not

30:49

do the jet quite yet. Yeah. No no with the

30:51

blocking mean They did that to us. I said, oh

30:53

my god. I feel like I'm the president Don't

30:57

do this to me. Take me regular. Let me

30:59

just walk the first class with my damn self

31:01

because now I'm gonna like Belva how much that

31:03

cost? Mm-hmm. I like that. You know, I love ease

31:06

You know, I love me some ease. Okay,

31:08

so Belva billboard named you, you know Just

31:11

you know one of Hollywood's top business managers

31:13

in 2023. Nothing. I mean, that's a crazy

31:16

It's not just billboard, but it's not just

31:18

billboard. It's variety. It's How do you report

31:21

it? Okay,

31:24

it was billboard it was variety it

31:26

was Hollywood Porter How they named

31:28

you and when they named you as one of the top

31:30

business managers, I was like no shit So,

31:34

but what do you think Belva separates a

31:36

good business manager from an excellent business manager?

31:39

Aha, great question. So one is I'm

31:41

a firm believer that business managers should

31:43

not be doing investments I

31:46

believe that your investment should be held separately I

31:49

believe that there should be checks and

31:51

balances in your in your business, right?

31:54

So I don't think everything should be in one

31:56

house because who's checking who's checking them That's

31:59

the first piece. And

32:02

I think there's something really special

32:04

and unique about me. And

32:07

that I am a mother figure, right?

32:09

And I'm very loving and nurturing. And

32:12

I look for

32:14

clients who need that. I

32:17

look for clients that need the gentle

32:19

love, the reminders, and the empathy. Because

32:21

again, it's we're all learning, we're all

32:23

navigating. And I never want

32:27

to be the person who's reprimanding you, I

32:29

want to be the person who's helping you

32:31

grow and navigate. So I

32:33

think that's very important. I mean, and as

32:35

a whole, access would be very candid. Accountants

32:38

are typically known to be the most socially

32:40

adept people on the planet. That's

32:42

honestly, I think one of the bigger challenges

32:44

is like the a lot of accountants have

32:46

the skill set in terms of like managing

32:48

money, moving money, tax planning. But there's a

32:50

goes back to the EQ, I was talking

32:52

about the emotional quotient where I think

32:56

that's where a lot of business managers miss is

32:58

that they may be good very good technically, but

33:00

then they're missing the social skills and personal

33:03

skills to really serve their clients and

33:05

do their clients justice. And

33:07

I can't speak for every client, like I don't have

33:09

a time cruise as a client. But

33:12

all of my clients, I see them as

33:14

humans first. And

33:16

I think that's the different part. I

33:18

would love to know this though, I've always wondered what is

33:20

the hardest part of your job and what is the

33:23

best part of your job? I

33:26

think the hardest part honestly, is because I

33:28

am so emotional and my EQ is

33:30

so high, that I

33:34

want you to do well. And I

33:36

can't have clients who I want

33:38

them to do more than they want to do for themselves.

33:41

Oh, Belva,

33:43

now that's a word. Now that's just for life. That's

33:46

just for life. I can't want more for you

33:48

nigger than you want for yourself. I can't. This

33:52

these ballplayers going to the club and making

33:54

it rain and spending 20k and doing all

33:56

this again years ago and you're going to

33:58

the strip club and I know that Kobe's

34:00

in the house, but you're on the bench

34:02

and Kobe's in the house. Why are you

34:05

buying the bar? Help me understand. Kobe's

34:07

making all this money. He's got brand

34:09

deals. He's got shoes and you're on

34:11

the bench. You're making standard contract, but

34:13

you're buying the bar. This makes no

34:15

sense. And so for me,

34:18

it's hard to watch people squander away

34:20

money and there's clients

34:22

who just don't get it and just don't

34:24

care as much as I care. And that's

34:26

where it's hard. And what's the

34:28

best part of your job? That

34:31

I love my clients. Like I

34:34

love, there's not one client that

34:36

I have where the phone rings and I go, Oh

34:38

my God,

34:40

I don't want to talk to this

34:42

person. So I love what I do.

34:44

I love my clients and I love

34:46

the impact because I know that we

34:50

have set you up for success. Now

34:52

in the last five years, we didn't predict a

34:54

pandemic. We didn't predict two strikes. And

34:57

thankfully we set you up and you

34:59

still were okay and to survive through

35:01

all that stuff, right? Yeah. But

35:04

for me, I know that we're setting our

35:06

clients up to be financially sound and

35:08

stable. Belva,

35:11

thank you so much for joining me today.

35:13

I cannot believe we're at the end.

35:15

I had so much fun. I

35:17

feel like a good time. It doesn't even feel

35:20

like a podcast. It feels like I know I

35:22

felt like I was on a phone with you.

35:24

This is usually how long we talk to guys.

35:27

Um, it's probably more jokes normally though. Let's

35:29

be honest. It's probably more laughter. It is.

35:31

I can stilled myself. I can stilled myself

35:33

because, um, our producers are like, Hey

35:36

X, too many fucks. Here's

35:38

one for the road. We have to get ad sales. Yes.

35:41

So where can

35:44

people find you on the internet, on the app,

35:47

you know, girl? Yeah. So my name

35:49

is a doozy. Um, but the, probably

35:51

the best way to find me is

35:53

by my name, Belva, Anna, Quincy, IG,

35:55

LinkedIn, et cetera. B E L V

35:57

a Anna, Quincy is a N N.

36:00

Oh my God. Thank

36:04

you so much, Belva. It was an honor. I love

36:06

you so much. I love you too, Belva. I

36:08

can't believe that I have you in my life.

36:10

And I always say to black women,

36:12

manage my money, my lawyer, my business manager. And

36:15

that is the key. And it

36:17

is an honor. It is an honor. I love

36:19

it. I love you so much, Belva. Have a

36:21

good rest of your day. You too. Bye. Bye.

36:26

Well, that's it for today, folks. Thanks

36:28

for listening in on me and Belva's

36:31

weekly catch-up. Y'all now know

36:33

way too much about my personal finances.

36:35

Okay? We basically besties now. And

36:37

I know too much about her other clients. Just

36:39

a fuck with her. Just a little bit. Keep on

36:41

her toes. You know, don't worry, y'all. I'm not buying

36:44

a boat. Okay? Or jet. Well,

36:46

maybe a helicopter just to get me the fuck out

36:49

of the family. Okay? Okay. Listen,

36:54

all jokes aside, I'm so grateful to

36:56

have Belva in my life. She's truly

36:58

a rock and has so much wisdom to

37:00

offer. I know not everybody needs

37:02

or can afford a business manager, but I

37:04

hope you have somebody in your life that

37:06

shit like that. Somebody who can

37:08

call to talk you off the ledge and tell you you

37:10

don't need no $5 a week wear a

37:12

shot in that $20 smoothie. Somebody

37:15

who has your best interest at heart, always

37:17

picks up the phone and helps you make

37:19

the hard decisions that are gonna make your

37:21

life better later on. Call your

37:24

best homie right now. No, no, no, not that one. You know

37:26

they not good with money. The other one. The

37:29

one who has their shit together. Call

37:31

them right now and say, my love, I need

37:34

you to be my business manager. And

37:36

when they say sin, what the hell is

37:38

a business manager? Send them this episode and

37:41

tell them to rate your review, honey. If they love you, sell

37:43

some more information. And if they don't, there's always us here at

Hi, I'm Paul Lefchampkis. I'm Lauren Lefchampkis. I'm

40:13

Scott Ockerman, and together we make up the

40:15

show Freedom! Freedom is

40:17

a show where the three of us who are

40:19

comedians and also friends, we all just hang out.

40:21

We tell stories about each other. You better tell

40:23

us the huge story. We're constantly

40:25

telling stories about each other. You

40:27

got it, Rapaltez. And we

40:29

play games and we laugh a lot. It's just

40:31

that simple. It's a really easy podcast. This is

40:34

a pretty good representation of the show. It's actually

40:36

exactly what it is, plus singing. So

40:38

listen to it now. The new season's out. Get it wherever you get

40:41

your podcasts.
