1:03

regret, the one that got away. And

1:05

no, we're not talking about the love

1:07

of your life. It's much worse if

1:09

you are a NASCAR driver. We're talking

1:12

about the wins that almost but

1:14

never were. .001

1:17

seconds is all that it took to decide

1:19

the race at Kansas over the weekend. It

1:21

was one for the history books, right? Which

1:23

has us wanting to go a little bit

1:25

further back in time to the photo finishes

1:27

of the past. And boy, do we have

1:29

the best guest to do that with today.

1:31

A former NASCAR historian, a legend of

1:33

the sport, Buzz McKim is joining DJD

1:36

Reloaded. Plus, we got Andrew Kerlin here

1:38

in studio. Sam Mayer, driver of the

1:40

number one for Junior Motorsports. He's gonna

1:43

come in, call in, and offer us

1:45

a little driver perspective of those photo

1:47

finish moments. And we

1:49

have a special surprise guest that's

1:51

either gonna offer us a really

1:54

great explanation or maybe

1:56

a really great excuse for that

1:58

crooked start-finish line at The

2:01

following is a production of Dirty Mo

2:03

Media. This

2:09

is off I guess if you do

2:12

it for quite a while. Yes. If we

2:14

had gone across the line and from

2:16

the get go, thought we would have

2:18

been upset about it, but it would

2:20

have been okay. I thought

2:22

I was going to throw up on the way to your 40s job.

2:31

Welcome to the BJJD Reloaded. I'm

2:33

Carla Gebhardt and here in the

2:35

Bojangle Studio with me is Andrew

2:37

Curlin back from London. Yes. I

2:40

saw you were at a soccer match over there. I was.

2:42

Yeah, it was Chelsea versus

2:44

Tottenham. I'm a Tottenham fan

2:46

and speaking of heartbreak. Yeah.

2:49

It was a heartbreaking loss. Well, I was just going

2:51

to say, I mean that's pretty cool and everything,

2:53

but one thing soccer does not have is photo

2:55

finishes like the one that we saw at Kansas

2:57

over the weekend. One for

2:59

the history books, 0.001 second,

3:01

determining that Kyle Larson was the winner. I think

3:03

the biggest thing in all of this that everybody's

3:05

talked about all week is the fact that we

3:07

thought it was Chris Busher. And then

3:10

NASCAR had to take a second,

3:12

look back at the photo and realize that Larson

3:14

was actually the one that crossed the start finish

3:16

line first. It was an unbelievable moment

3:18

just to be able to witness that. And

3:20

I honestly did not think we were going

3:23

to get that type of finish when the

3:25

white flag flew. But here we are and

3:27

we're talking about it. Yeah. Pretty

3:30

exciting. TV coverage always gets the elation of victory

3:32

lane. I know. Kyle Larson, pretty

3:34

excited. You kind of saw his in-car camera

3:36

of like, he thought he lost and he

3:38

was like, oh man, good job everybody. Great

3:40

effort. Then he found out he won and

3:42

it was just like a total switch of

3:44

emotions. But on the other end, you had

3:46

Chris Busher who thought he won and then

3:49

he didn't win. And that was

3:51

a whole other roller coaster of emotions, which is

3:54

something that he talked about with Dale Jr. on

3:56

the Dale Jr. download earlier this week. Is

3:58

this a loss, I guess? My stick in your

4:01

gut for quite a while he is

4:03

about don't throw up on way they

4:05

are forced to fifteen else if we

4:07

don't cross the line and from the

4:09

get go always and her second you

4:11

will have been upset about it. you

4:13

to been heard about it but it

4:15

would have been okay. Transponders and time

4:17

and score and everything art or it

4:19

is our favorite is comical right now

4:21

to talk about have. Been. To

4:23

A to see it all play on

4:25

the way it is just A it

4:27

hurts I haven't been in the situation

4:30

but when he say i just how

4:32

like thrown up on my nail plane

4:34

ride back I can understand where he's

4:36

coming from because come so close and

4:38

it's and is your point o One

4:41

seconds away from getting something that you

4:43

very well deserved that that's the biggest

4:45

thing. Whenever you see these type finishes

4:47

it's like you know both of these

4:49

drivers deserve to go in victory lane

4:52

but only one. Can I be a since

4:54

with so heartbreaking about finishing second in that

4:56

situation? Really is and I'll miss as a

4:58

little bit more surprised that he said he felt

5:00

like the on up after the play because for

5:03

me I mean again with nothin in a

5:05

race car at the end of these types

5:07

of races obviously but I would think you

5:09

know right away you would just be heartbroken

5:11

have walking back to eating you know getting ready

5:13

to leave the track and and all others innocent

5:15

hitting them but then I feel like maybe

5:17

it would trickle off a little bit but

5:19

that's it's not the case and and if

5:21

you talk to any Nascar driver out there

5:23

they always remember the ones that they lost,

5:25

the ones that got away. They can recall every

5:27

second of it on and that's going to be the

5:29

case for. Christmas. Or moving forward and

5:32

think about Chris pushers position. this is

5:34

a playoff berth on the line or

5:36

of case bored looking for when there

5:38

are a lot of things that. Were

5:40

going their way when they thought they won that

5:43

race and then to have. This situation

5:45

change in the circumstances

5:47

around that be different

5:49

now have. All

5:52

this work I thought we were in. Now is

5:54

that of you've right back to square one that

5:56

is. That is a tough feeling. And I

5:58

think that plays. Most and to

6:00

the emotion. After a riot, he saw Kyle

6:02

Larson. He was like all man good try

6:04

everybody on that. He saw that he had

6:07

one and I mean he was excited. but

6:09

like not. I don't think he was more

6:11

excited than Christmas or was disappointed when he

6:13

found out that he lost, but I think

6:15

it's because Kyle Larson already locked into the

6:17

play offs. Chris Busher Like you said, more

6:19

was on the line, but I just thought

6:21

it was interesting to kind of watch that

6:23

range of. emotion. And you talked Kyle Larson the

6:25

sweet. Been. A. Good idea And he was at

6:27

yeah I mean super excited about it

6:29

and you know, like when? Plus Daniel

6:31

came on and told him that they

6:34

had whiny was like oh really wow

6:36

them at all I'm Sarah How deluded.

6:38

A little bit more explanation after that,

6:40

but yeah and then you look back

6:42

at the the one in the history

6:44

books from Two Thousand and Three and

6:46

in Arlington Down Zero Zero, Two Seconds

6:48

of Ricky Craven, Kurt Blaze and if

6:50

you look at any video from that

6:52

or any of the interviews, it's very

6:54

interesting to me that Ricky Craven one.

6:56

That. But. He was almost.

6:58

And. A Not as excited as you

7:00

thought he would be, but Kerr Bush who

7:03

lost said came up to Ricky was like

7:05

that was awesome. That was the coolest thing

7:07

I've ever been a part of. Like and

7:09

and that spoke such volumes to To Craven

7:11

right? But I'm A that's totally different circumstances

7:14

than the Larson Busher race. Think it's

7:16

because of how bush your loss thinking he won.

7:18

You know at least Kurt Busch New, You know

7:20

there was a mere a lot of you know

7:22

as well as they broke the news early through

7:24

a real or know. I think as

7:27

deflating pushers is way more heartbreaking than Kurt

7:29

Busch, but hopefully he can look back at

7:31

this moment. Wow, what a great race! Moyes

7:33

said hey, let's get a win and darling to right we

7:35

can make it all and out as the way. I have

7:37

to think about it for too much longer. Are.

7:40

to let's go ahead and get a little

7:42

driver perspective and on these photos cynicism on

7:44

the topic so let's bring in at know

7:46

the driver of the number one for junior

7:48

motor sports sam mayor he's joining us right

7:51

now and sam and eight had been a

7:53

part of a lot of close than a

7:55

says before but you are recently on the

7:57

good side of this i had texas just

7:59

a couple of weeks ago So let's start

8:01

with with the good perspective of this of

8:04

how much fun it is to win a

8:06

photo finish Yeah, it's a blast

8:08

obviously to win anything But to win a

8:10

close finish that gets a lot of media

8:12

attention and a lot of people are talking

8:14

about it It makes it more special Especially

8:17

like Texas for us like I was I

8:19

was almost prepared to finish second anyway just

8:21

try to get the dash for cash money

8:23

at that point and Obviously

8:26

like we were able to rally up and get

8:28

a chance to go for the win but I

8:31

was kind of in defense mode because seven was

8:33

right behind me and then all

8:35

of a sudden the card fells the right way We

8:37

were able to go attack for a win You

8:40

know this this show is kind of about you

8:42

know, the ones that got away obviously that one

8:44

didn't get away for you It was a good

8:47

result What is a heartbreaker that

8:49

that is stood out, you know, put yourself in

8:51

Ryan Seig shoes I'm sure you've been there. Is

8:53

there anything that comes to mind of like dang?

8:55

I wish I could get that one back Yeah,

8:58

Talladega is the first one that comes to my mind

9:00

at the end of 2020 to the fall race there I

9:04

led the whole last lap and a half and Literally

9:07

up until like the last like 20 feet of

9:09

the race house leader So I was

9:11

on the bad end of the stick there Unfortunately, and

9:13

that was I mean two years ago now, so

9:16

Getting a win on the good side of it.

9:18

Definitely kind of makes up for it, especially in

9:20

dramatic fashion like that So that was

9:23

two years ago, but do you ever

9:25

truly get over the emotions of letting

9:27

one slip away like that? No,

9:29

I mean like you're always thinking

9:32

about it. It's always on the back of your

9:34

head, man That'd be one extra W I'd have

9:36

on my plate on my resume so if you

9:38

always think about it the what ifs and how

9:40

could it be but You

9:43

got to take the good with the bad I guess

9:45

with racing because you're gonna be on the good side

9:47

and the bad side at times, you know,

9:49

I'm sure When

9:51

Ryan Seagre played that final lap

9:53

he probably You

9:55

know hit the replay button a lot more times

9:57

than you did at least to try and like analyze

10:00

Monday morning quarterback it. Do

10:02

you think you learned more from the ones

10:05

that got away versus the ones that you ended up

10:07

winning? Oh no, that's tough to say.

10:09

I think no matter what the

10:12

result is, you're always going to learn something from it,

10:14

good or bad. I

10:16

learned something about myself at Texas that

10:18

I can't give up as quick as

10:21

I did. Kevin Hamlin

10:23

on top of the roof for me, my spotter,

10:26

he's kind of the one that helped guided me

10:28

to have that opportunity to go for the win.

10:30

I just had to go out there

10:32

and do it. But yeah, I

10:34

got to stay in the game and

10:37

you can never give up because you literally never know what

10:39

can happen. The 39 could have a flat

10:41

tire there at the last lap and I pass him

10:43

anyway. So you never know what's going to happen. You

10:45

always got to keep your head in the game. Obviously

10:48

the 39, he had the rough side of

10:51

it because you don't know how

10:53

to lead races like that if you've never done

10:55

it before. You don't know what you don't know.

10:58

And obviously there's a couple things he could have done

11:00

different to defend a little better. But it's part of

11:02

learning as well. You

11:04

mentioned like that was something you

11:07

learned, like, oh, I can't give up very quickly. Was

11:09

that something that you've had to work

11:11

at? Has that cost you before? It

11:15

hasn't, thank goodness.

11:17

But this was the first opportunity

11:19

where I was kind of in like the

11:21

middle ground of, yeah, I'm second place.

11:23

I technically could win the race before to

11:26

go. But I also had the

11:28

dash for cash 100,000 right

11:30

behind me with the seven. So I was kind

11:32

of in the middle ground of playing defense and

11:34

offense. And I think I was playing more defense

11:36

at the time. But with

11:38

three to go and we really started turning the wicker

11:40

up to try to go for it. That's

11:42

when I knew I had to go in the offensive and there was a

11:44

chance. Now, any of the

11:47

photos finishes that you have lost before,

11:49

Sam, maybe there was a pause, a

11:51

moment. But then you were told on the

11:53

radio, you know, hey, we came up short in this

11:55

one. Put yourself in Chris

11:57

Busher's shoes from last weekend. To

12:00

think that you won and then moments

12:02

later realize that you did not win,

12:04

what do you think your emotions would

12:06

have been like? I can't

12:08

even fathom how awful that is.

12:12

I think that is probably the worst thing

12:14

that a race car driver could ever go

12:16

through. Yeah, you can

12:19

have a bad wreck or anything like that,

12:21

but you can recover from that. I don't

12:23

know if you can ever really recover from

12:25

having one literally taken away from you. Yeah,

12:30

I feel for him. Obviously, that's

12:32

a cool organization. I'm

12:35

a Chris Busher fan ever since he's been

12:37

a part of RK and that

12:39

whole crew over there. They're really fun

12:42

to watch on the racetrack. So seeing

12:44

one slip away there sucks, but obviously

12:46

Team Chevy right here is really good

12:48

for us on our side. Kyle

12:51

Larson, I look up to him. I work out

12:53

with him every now and then. It's really cool

12:55

talking with him. It's really cool to see

12:57

all of his success and try to be

12:59

like him actually. I've

13:02

mentioned earlier that, man, poor Chris

13:04

Busher has to...anytime you get a

13:07

close finish, right? It's

13:09

historic. It's a big moment. You're

13:11

going to see a lot of replays of it.

13:14

Does that make you so thankful that you ended

13:16

up winning the Texas race? Anytime you see a

13:18

replay, it's a happy memory. Yeah, I'm

13:21

definitely grateful for that. Obviously, I'm

13:23

also grateful for that opportunity to give

13:26

all the guys on the TV side of things a good...something

13:28

to talk about for a couple weeks up

13:31

until obviously Kyle and Chris did it again. So

13:34

we're definitely making the content and the media pretty

13:36

good this year. We're doing a good

13:38

job keeping everyone on their toes and keeping them watching.

13:40

So it's cool to be a part of that this

13:42

year. Seeing all the social media posts and

13:44

everything like that is obviously a really proud

13:47

moment and happy memory. Obviously, if I was in

13:49

the other shoes, it would be like, man, I'm

13:51

not going on social media for at least the

13:54

next six months because that's all you're going to

13:56

see. I know I wouldn't. Yeah, it's a good

13:58

deal for me. Well, Sam, we

14:00

appreciate you joining us. Of course, we wish

14:02

you all the best in all your future

14:04

photo finishes. Hopefully you'll be on the good

14:07

side of things, on the winning side, and

14:09

we really appreciate you joining us. Thank

14:11

you guys so much. More ones for Jaron coming soon.

14:15

I know they're excited to hear that.

14:17

Absolutely. Yeah, but Chris Buscher, the worst

14:20

thing that could possibly happen to

14:22

a driver. I haven't heard that one yet. Yeah, I

14:24

mean, I really do feel

14:26

for Buscher, especially like, you know, the emotions that came

14:28

from it. Not easy.

14:30

Yeah, well, we've talked about the disappointment

14:33

and the elation, but we

14:35

haven't talked about this close finish in

14:37

the context of the history of the

14:39

sport. We're gonna do that with Buzz

14:41

McKim joining us, coming up

14:43

here in a little bit. We're also gonna

14:46

be talking about your perspective. Get your perspective

16:13

Is the closest finish and Nascar history this

16:15

weekend at Kansas, the Twin Towers and Increased

16:17

Butcher. We've already talked about it a little

16:19

their the what does it mean in the

16:22

context of the sport in the history of

16:24

this for we had to get a former

16:26

and Nascar historian used to work at the

16:29

Hall of Fame. Harry was a director as

16:31

statistical services. He's been a part of Nascar

16:33

his whole entire life and now he is

16:35

a part of D J D Reloaded. Let's

16:38

go ahead and welcome in but they can

16:40

and by as I want to know when

16:42

you watch. The Finish on Sunday from

16:44

Kansas between Larson and Bush. Or did

16:46

you realize the the enormity of that

16:48

moment and what it would mean for

16:51

the sport. You. Remember him

16:53

old ones are those incredible It

16:55

was do for you grew close.

16:57

As for the Subaru. And.

16:59

Are so gloomy where you overdraw years mother

17:01

is suitable for history books you know are

17:04

your color you said they'll former Nascar sorry

17:06

but bus you ever stop being a historian

17:08

like would as they were mean at least

17:10

like for me when I saw that since

17:13

my holy cow like that moment just happens

17:15

would have that moment mean for you know

17:17

in that oh my god by young back

17:20

and work mode you know this is significant

17:22

in terms and Askari sir. Oh.

17:24

You, you're it Did so before your

17:26

major major milestone and I enjoy be

17:28

didn't close on it and them to

17:30

will. Be. Serves me a producer

17:32

much, but it was a tiger mask or

17:34

history. Believe it or not, And

17:37

Boom! You do happen in the

17:39

Macys. Seventy four firecracker. four hundred at

17:41

it's older. She'll. Yarborough and

17:43

Do a Buddy Baker tied

17:46

for third place. And

17:48

in the actual Reese reported as

17:51

card on the third. Their while

17:53

though. Decided. I know that

17:55

albums. Yeah. that's answers i know

17:57

added not at as And

18:00

honestly, I mean, we just saw the photo finish

18:02

at Kansas. So we've seen a lot of photo

18:04

finishes in 2024. What

18:06

do you make of that with the next

18:08

gen car? Obviously you think about Atlanta earlier

18:10

this season, also in the Xfinity series side

18:12

too, but yeah, what do you make of

18:14

all these photo finishes? Kind of

18:16

just shows the incredible competition that NASCAR has

18:19

going for it now. And the

18:22

quality of drivers too. It's

18:24

just, I think it speaks volumes on

18:26

how NASCAR is dealing

18:29

with the competition, and I think it's

18:31

just a great era

18:33

in NASCAR history. You

18:36

know, I already learned something from Buzz and we

18:38

haven't even started the game yet. I

18:40

think we should put him to the test to really see what

18:42

he's made of. Ready to do

18:44

that? All right. Buzz, are you ready for

18:47

this? I know that they've tried to stump you before,

18:49

but we're going to try our best today. Easy

18:53

on me. I'm kind of old. Okay. All

18:55

right. So we do have some softball questions at

18:57

least to get us going. So flashback to

18:59

2011, Talladega Speedway, the Aaron's 4.99

19:01

was decided by 0.002 between

19:07

Jimmy Johnson and who? Clint

19:11

Boyer. Correct. That

19:14

was an easy one. He knew that one right away. All

19:17

right, Buzz. I got the next one

19:19

for you. Who is the only driver

19:21

to have multiple appearances in the top

19:23

10 closest finishes list, and this is

19:25

not, this is only including cut points

19:27

races. Just for context. And

19:29

how many appearances does he have? Oh,

19:32

that's good. That's good. I'm hoping. And

19:35

could it be, well, I was thinking Jimmy

19:37

Johnson. No, I don't know. I

19:41

think he got me on that one. How about, no,

19:43

not Harvard. Yeah,

19:46

I'd say Jimmy Johnson. I think he's got two. It

19:49

is Jimmy. I think I don't

19:51

know if Jimmy has two, but it is actually,

19:53

he's still racing so he can continue to make

19:55

history. Yeah. Oh, well. I'm

19:58

doing a blank here. Sorry about that.

20:00

It's Ryan Blaney with three. Yep. Those

20:04

Daytona 500 finishes, they've got him

20:06

good. Yeah. He's been unlucky

20:08

in terms of that race. Yeah, a lot

20:10

of close ones at Talladega too. How

20:12

many finishes in NASCAR Cup Series history

20:15

have been decided by less than 1 1-hundredths

20:17

of a second? Oh

20:20

my gosh, I'm gonna say about 15 or 20. It's

20:24

somewhere around there. It's less, it's actually

20:26

10. But that's still

20:28

quite a bit. Yeah. Quite

20:30

a bit. You know, you mentioned that the Daytona 500,

20:33

probably the most famous photo finish was the 59 Daytona

20:35

500, where

20:37

Lee Petty and Johnny Bowie crossed

20:39

the line. And if you look real close to that

20:41

famous picture, you'll see somebody standing under

20:44

the flag stand, and that was Bill France Sr.

20:47

And he had no idea that they were gonna

20:49

have a photo finish. He didn't even set a photo

20:52

camera up there at the start finish line.

20:54

He figured, why not, if they're 500 miles.

20:58

But what happened was Joe Weatherly was one lap

21:00

down, and he was on the outside, and

21:02

he blocked Bill France's view. So

21:05

Bill put an APB out for

21:07

anybody who had film or video

21:10

of that finish, and after 61 hours, or

21:13

it turned out to be three days actually, race

21:15

was run on Sunday. They finally decided on

21:18

Tuesday that John, or that's a boat champ

21:20

race. The boat champ went to victory

21:23

lane, kissed the trophy girl and all that. And

21:25

Lee Petty said, I knew I won by

21:27

about two feet. You think Chris Busher had

21:30

it hard? He had maybe like a half

21:32

full of cool down laps of thinking he

21:34

won. Yeah, two to three days. That's

21:37

tough. I love these stories though, and

21:40

you've heard them before, but yeah, to get a little

21:42

bit more context from Buzz. Yeah, absolutely.

21:45

Let's see, should we go to the next one here? In 2000 and

21:47

2001, which

21:50

track had back to back

21:52

spring race finishes measuring inside

21:54

the 0.01 of

21:56

a second finish margin. Man,

21:58

you guys are tough. guys are you you've been

22:01

up late I will say the 2001 race at this track

22:04

is a pretty

22:09

famous photo finish if that

22:11

helps okay that'd be Atlanta

22:13

probably with with Harvick yep the closest

22:15

finish at a short track came in 1998 at

22:18

Richmond Raceway

22:20

and the two drivers involved shared the

22:22

same first name who are they 1998

22:24

at Richmond Richmond

22:27

Richmond yes that was

22:29

pretty tough oh yeah you guys

22:37

are good first name is

22:40

Jeff oh gee

22:42

let's see not bodein yes

22:49

Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton and

22:51

it was Burton that one you know

22:53

the closest finish up till

22:55

this past week was the the 2003 Carolina

22:58

dealers 400 at Darlington

23:02

between Ricky Craven and Kurt Busch that

23:04

was to one thousandth of a second you remember that

23:07

was the most probably the most

23:09

thrilling final lap that I've ever seen

23:11

and they came across the line you know side

23:14

by side to one thousandth of a second I

23:17

think that that whole final lap

23:19

I still think is higher

23:21

in my book than the Kansas but watching

23:24

Larson run that high groove and just holding

23:26

it not hitting the wall that was pretty

23:28

thrilling but I would say buzz like you

23:30

know how would you compare the the Darlington

23:33

finish versus the one we saw this

23:35

past weekend at Kansas oh

23:38

my gosh well you of course you had that last lap

23:40

leading up to a Darlington finish but

23:42

you're right about Larson he's got

23:45

he's got guts I mean the bugger put the

23:48

card anywhere he can put it that's for sure

23:50

so me personally I'll probably

23:52

go back to the 2003 Darlington

23:54

race just for the final

23:56

lap that was leading up to it and then you know

23:59

they kind of got together and if I'm not

24:01

mistaken Burton went up into the

24:03

wall going into one and they

24:06

have a little little tussle there. How

24:08

about a couple more? Should we try to confirm? I

24:10

think so. Alright which track is represented the

24:12

most in the top 10 closest

24:15

finishes in NASCAR Cup

24:17

Series history? I'm gonna

24:19

say probably Daytona. It

24:21

is a super speedway not Daytona. Oh

24:24

then it has to be Talladega. Talladega with

24:26

four. I think

24:28

that extra distance from the

24:32

travel start finish line that's definitely stirred some things

24:34

up in terms

24:37

of our photo finishes. Let's see here.

24:41

We were talking about points races. These

24:43

are non points races unless you go

24:45

to recently. They've been awarding points for

24:47

these. How many dual finishes were

24:49

decided by less than 1

24:52

1 hundredth of a second. Oh gosh well I know

24:54

Skinner in 2001 he beat Dale Jr.

24:59

by a thousandth of

25:01

a second. Also the shootout was

25:04

13 one thousandth of a second.

25:07

In 2012 that was

25:10

Kyle Busch and Tony Stewart. And then

25:12

we had another one that we had

25:14

the Gatorade dual in 2010

25:16

Casey Kane and Tony Stewart by 14

25:19

one thousandth of a second. So

25:23

that's been another hotbed. Another topic

25:25

of conversation at Kansas was the

25:27

transponder system. So one of our

25:30

questions is when was the currently

25:32

used transponder system implemented in the

25:34

Cup Series? This one's tough. This one's

25:37

definitely tough. No

25:39

I was with NASCAR when that came about.

25:41

I've been racking my brain figuring that

25:43

was gonna be a question and I'm

25:45

thinking about 98. Close in

25:47

the decade. 1993

25:53

was the year. I'll

25:56

be darned okay. Before Then

25:58

it was. Will buy a

26:00

have car lanes the war two feet or once

26:03

for her so my fav be really had no

26:05

way of. Oh of. The

26:07

of make Aliyah the oh. Only

26:10

one one been sort of thing. The resistor

26:12

they had no. No. Way of doing that.

26:14

To. Think about how far we've come of the

26:16

we need to find someone who ended up

26:18

taking so no of that Sixty Nine Daytona

26:21

Five hundred. Now is that Transponders We've got

26:23

the high speed cameras? It is. It is

26:25

processing the watch that. Yet as by as

26:27

we are also going to be talking to

26:29

these are bringing in some of the Sands

26:31

perspective on this. So today of close Nascar

26:34

finishes we asked them what they would want

26:36

to see as a tie breaker and the

26:38

sport. Obviously we know it's whoever as it

26:40

is a ties ever led the most laps

26:43

would win the race I want to get

26:45

your your opinion on. That's what would you

26:47

think would make it make for good tie

26:50

breaker. Yeah. I

26:52

think the best course good right were removed the

26:54

most laps. Family Theaters out with

26:56

a supply. The Mughals or whoever.

26:59

Really stood in the rough, especially

27:01

in the laughs. So.

27:03

I'm gonna. I figured that bill a

27:05

real. Good. Way of putting a thorough.

27:08

The. Affected to illustrate

27:10

side. The.

27:12

Zebra This guy who ever lived most labs which

27:14

you have club would have won anyway. I

27:18

guess you know ball? don't lie, you

27:20

know and Larson larger would have got

27:23

any other. I stare at this so

27:25

you know we talk about the the

27:27

is the tie breaker system boucher really

27:29

needed more than point o one he

27:31

has. Larson would have had to tie

27:33

breaker so he. Know he was already at

27:36

that Disadvantages: Come in and surf Initialized. I

27:39

guess it's good that the photos and as was. Caught

27:41

on. So yes, Mr. obeid

27:44

we appreciate it so much we appreciate your

27:46

time today and of course we heard from

27:48

buys that he likes the way the nascar

27:50

has a we got to hear from the

27:53

sands andrew gotta hear what they want to

27:55

see as a possible tie breaker and the

27:57

sport plus us how about the crooked center

27:59

slow at Kansas. We have a

28:01

very special guest joining us. It's going

28:03

lot of theories about why. I thought it

paper. No, it was so you could

29:09

So we know the finish between Larson and

29:11

Busher over the weekend at Kansas was the closest,

29:14

but was it the best? That was something

29:16

that we kind of teed up to you, the

29:18

fans at home, to weigh in on this

29:20

week's Dale calls. And if it

29:22

wasn't this weekend between Larson and Busher,

29:24

then who has had the best finish

29:26

in NASCAR history? Let's go ahead and

29:28

take a listen. It's

29:30

hard to put a defining answer

29:33

on what our greatest

29:35

NASCAR finishes. For my lifetime, it

29:37

spans from the 70s, the 80s,

29:39

the 90s. There's so many to

29:42

mention. There was a good one with Richard

29:45

Petty, last lap of the 500. They

29:47

tangle up in the infield. Dale Seniors

29:49

win at the 500.

29:52

There's another historical one. The

29:55

one with Junior Johnson, if

29:57

we can narrow it down to the 70s, the 80s, or the 90s, it's a

29:59

good one. 90s I think you

30:01

would probably help. I can't relate

30:03

to as I was listening that call

30:06

I was trying to think of which

30:08

ones would be mine and I just

30:10

I can't relate to the you know

30:13

those are obviously amazing historical finishes. I

30:15

think we've had some really good photo

30:17

finishes within the recent recent last

30:20

decade. Yeah I do think so as well.

30:22

I think it is interesting though thinking about those

30:25

clips that you watch historically

30:28

like to me they mean more because

30:30

of the nostalgia of them right. Also

30:33

they had control of their own cars

30:35

and how they were made this next-gen

30:37

car yeah maybe to me produces closer

30:40

finishes because they are the same so more

30:42

creativity the nostalgia of the clips. I'm not

30:44

discrediting this weekend at all I thought it

30:46

was amazing so much fun to watch all

30:49

of the photo finishes of 2024 but yeah

30:51

I do like the historical finishes a little

30:53

bit better. I'll say 79 day 2 in

30:55

500 the Kent Squire call yeah

30:58

and this you know beating and banging they're

31:01

angry they know if they have lost. I

31:03

obviously was not alive for that that is

31:05

one of the best finishes in NASCAR history.

31:07

You weren't? I'm gonna try it. Just buy

31:09

a little bit. Got some good anti-aging cream.

31:12

Alright so I'm saying that

31:14

Atlanta this year beats out Kansas

31:17

because three cars is better

31:19

than two not just

31:21

because I was there but three cars is

31:23

better too. If one I can tell the

31:25

line in Atlanta was straight so we know

31:28

what was going on. I don't know about

31:30

all this crooked line stuff happening in Kansas

31:32

they got to get that straightened out. Nicely

31:35

done they do need to get that straightened out.

31:40

That one is great. The one in

31:42

Atlanta was I mean you were watching

31:44

at home I was in Atlanta

31:46

like the viewer was a little

31:49

jealous of that by the way but watching

31:51

yeah three cars going to the finish and

31:53

not knowing who won at that moment

31:55

yeah that was pretty great. Amazing.

31:58

I don't think Kansas with the greatest race

32:00

of all time. I know some people might think that.

32:02

Some of the younger folks, hey, whatever,

32:06

closest finish ever, it

32:08

makes a good case. I

32:10

think Atlanta this year was a better race

32:12

overall. And 2001

32:14

Cracker Barrel 500 and Pepsi 400, those

32:19

definitely the greatest finishes of all

32:21

time, no matter what. I

32:24

would have to, I think I would disagree

32:26

with him in terms of I

32:28

really enjoyed Kansas start

32:30

to finish. Gosh, it was so

32:32

refreshing to see that type of

32:34

racing and you get a historic

32:36

finish. I think Kansas had

32:38

it all. Now that's not to discount

32:40

Atlanta, but I think I would rank

32:42

Kansas green flag to checkered flag a

32:45

better race than Atlanta. Wasn't Jeff Glove's

32:47

goal, wasn't it the best race?

32:49

Oh, potentially. Yeah, I'm pretty sure that

32:51

it was. But I think, yeah, I

32:53

mean, there's not many races where I'm

32:55

gonna point out how good stage one

32:58

was. Exactly, right. But Kansas, it

33:00

did stand out quite a bit. And yeah, I

33:02

would have to disagree a little bit as well. The

33:05

way Kyle Larson got everybody coming off of

33:07

turn two was unbelievable. When he had the

33:09

momentum all the way at Chris Busch at

33:11

his state of God, he

33:14

went up into turn three, I swear to

33:16

God, he had Robert Duvall from days of

33:18

thunder in his ear up on the spotter

33:20

set. Say, you can hold, if you go

33:23

to the outside, you can make a call.

33:25

And by God, Kyle Larson went on the

33:27

outside, he held the whole damn prize, does.

33:30

He come up to turn four, and he said, you know

33:32

what, I'm gonna pretend to side draft. I'm gonna slam the

33:34

hell into Chris Busch's door. And you know what, I'm not

33:37

gonna do it once, I'm gonna do it twice. And

33:39

then I'm gonna take the trophy home. And that's

33:41

why it's the best damn photo finish you'll

33:43

ever see on this side of the Mississippi.

33:46

I think he just took us through a lap. We need to get this

33:48

guy in the booth. I was just saying, I love the

33:51

energy. All of the calls

33:53

this week have been great. So keep those

33:55

coming because these were very highly entertaining. I

33:57

feel like if I close my eyes and listen to

33:59

that. Last caller, I could picture

34:01

the, I could see it, I

34:04

could visualize the light. That

34:07

was good. I think for me,

34:10

I'll be biased. I'm going to go

34:13

with one that I witnessed in person.

34:15

The 2016 photo finish in the Daytona

34:17

500 to me is one of the

34:19

craziest finishes I've ever seen.

34:22

The stakes, everything that was on the line for it

34:24

to come that close. I

34:27

feel like I'm a little bit a part of history.

34:30

I interviewed Denny in victory lane. I

34:32

was the first person to show him the photo of the

34:34

photo finish in God's reaction. That was pretty neat. How old

34:36

were you back then? Probably

34:38

like 13 or 14 years old. No,

34:42

that's awesome. I do think being at

34:44

the track at some of those is

34:46

going to sway how you feel about it. Even

34:49

for the small post race

34:51

reaction that we got to see from

34:54

Kansas, you saw the crowd hanging around.

34:57

They were elated to be a part of that. Now

35:00

you are a part of history when you're there. I love

35:03

watching all the videos on social media, seeing

35:05

the different angles of people sitting in turn

35:07

four, people sitting at the start finish line

35:09

from the infield. I could watch the

35:11

replay of that race a million times. We

35:13

also asked you on X this week

35:15

of if there was a tie breaker

35:18

in NASCAR, which now we know that

35:20

there is. If

35:23

there is a tie, it's whoever leads

35:25

the most laps, that is who wins.

35:29

What would fans want to see?

35:31

What's your solution? I don't

35:33

really have a solution, but I know the fans

35:35

got really creative with this. Let's

35:37

go ahead and look at what they had to

35:39

say about what they would like to see a

35:41

tie in NASCAR look like. Let's

35:44

see, from track sweeper two,

35:46

both NASCAR sweepers have the

35:48

same setup. Wow. They

35:50

would let them in for one lap starting

35:52

from a still position at the start finish

35:54

line. Wow. They

35:56

get out of their cars, get in the sweepers. That would take a

35:58

lot of time. All for a

36:01

fair playing field though. Trisha

36:03

Taylor says only allow them fuel and tires

36:05

a 25 lap shootout if

36:07

they wreck each other third place wins. So

36:09

this is the tiebreaker, we're going to rack

36:11

them up again. Yeah. Dang. And

36:14

then, okay, so if they wreck each other you guys could not keep

36:17

it in order. We're just going to give it to third

36:19

place. Yeah. Okay. Alexander,

36:21

sudden death. Both

36:24

drivers race till the first one runs out

36:26

of fuel or tire wear and get, before

36:29

the fuel and tire wear gets to them,

36:31

the one who survives is the winner. Wow.

36:34

So that is going to be a really slow race. We're

36:36

going to have 1% throttle to save

36:39

tires and fuel. Wow. And

36:41

it's going to last the rest of the night.

36:43

You thought Talladega was tough Alexander. I want to

36:45

see your, I want to see that idea put

36:47

into play. I want to see, I want

36:49

to see them race at Talladega night style.

36:52

That's your solution? Yeah, yeah, just like

36:54

they both drivers get out of their

36:57

cars and you physically on foot race

36:59

through the start finish line. Listen,

37:01

one person out there on the X

37:03

says that height should determine it. What?

37:06

Oh man. Or Justin

37:08

Allgaier. That's brutal. Joey Logano, Carson

37:11

Hostovar, they're probably all for that.

37:13

Todd Gillins, hey, you got a shot if

37:15

you're at a tie. Somebody also

37:17

said a drag race on pit road. That's

37:20

interesting. Somebody said both

37:22

win and both get the points and both

37:24

advance to the playoffs I guess. What

37:27

if we, both drivers get out of their

37:29

car, you set up podiums and they have to convince

37:31

you why they should be the winner? You

37:34

know, give me like your two minute pitch. You

37:39

know Chris Busher, oh like we need to win for Ford,

37:41

like this is going to get us in the playoffs. Larson

37:43

already won one of his shoes. And whoever, you know, he

37:45

would have had my vote. Whoever cheers

37:47

the loudest is that? Maybe that's it.

37:49

Yeah. A lot of shoot

37:51

outs, rock, paper, scissors. I saw a lot of

37:54

this. I mean that sounds a lot

37:56

of fun. I don't think NASCAR would

37:58

necessarily think of that. Pit crew

38:00

challenge, somebody also said that, that would make it

38:02

a little bit more team-oriented, but you might

38:04

have some drivers. I like the height. I like the

38:06

height thing. But you know, you

38:08

got to make sure these guys aren't wearing lifts. Like

38:10

they got to go through inspection after that, right? I

38:13

think that's important. Take your hat off. I even

38:15

think you got to have a haircut, okay?

38:18

You can't have your hair sticking up. Slick your

38:20

hair back. Or else you will get penalized and

38:22

the post race teardown and the wind will go to second

38:24

place because you were using lifts in your shoes. I

38:27

think drivers would do whatever it takes to

38:29

get a wind. I don't

38:31

doubt you on that. All right. Well,

38:33

the other thing that we've talked about, we've

38:35

teased a little bit, is this crooked start-finish

38:38

line at Kansas that we've all been talking

38:40

about. Jeff Gluck, Jordan Bianchi on the teardown

38:42

earlier this week explained why

38:44

it was, what NASCAR actually used.

38:46

But still, I mean, why was

38:49

it so crooked? And

38:51

I'm not, yeah, we're going to have an

38:53

answer for this. But a lot of

38:55

people had some interesting thoughts

38:57

about this, including Denny Hamlin on

38:59

actions detrimental. This is the

39:01

start-finish line. It's going to be, if you painted

39:03

it. It looks like Molly painted it. Why

39:07

is Molly taking strays over here? That

39:10

was a little unfair to call Molly out. I

39:13

think, I mean, they were just saying, I think she could

39:15

have done a better job. She could have done a better

39:17

job. Dirty Mo Media has found the

39:19

guy that is responsible for painting

39:22

the crooked line. We'll

39:25

work on that. We'll work on that. Okay, here

39:27

he is. We're going to leave his name out.

39:29

It's Peter Picasso. Peter Picasso. No, no relation. I

39:35

believe that. So, yeah, I

39:38

just want to know, how did you

39:40

get this job to paint the start-finish

39:42

lines? Well, you know,

39:44

I was in the area, first of all.

39:46

That worked pretty cheap. But, listen, so I

39:49

actually did the three-point line at the

39:51

Women's Basketball Tournament. A

39:53

lot of people were talking about it. So, I guess I

39:55

did a pretty good job. You nailed that one. You really

39:57

did a good job. Thank you. Yeah, talk

39:59

about level playing field. Who are you there's no one you're waving

40:01

to over there. There's no one over there Okay,

40:05

um that is fantastic. I'm so

40:07

so happy for you um like what did you think

40:09

of the job you did at Kansas? Are you proud

40:11

of it? Crooked

40:16

what you thought no one's a fan of abstract thought

40:20

What's next for Peter Picasa? I've

40:24

been getting a lot of phone calls. I

40:26

think they're gonna fly me out to France

40:28

for the for the Olympics Yeah, they're commissioning

40:30

me to do a piece called lane four

40:32

for tragic field Did anyone

40:34

ask you to paint surface? I'm really

40:36

not believing. How did you get here? How did

40:38

you get in here? All right. I'll come clean.

40:40

I'll come clean. I just walked in and there

40:43

was just fucking a white paint No brush. Don't

40:45

fight the finger pain. You can't do what I

40:47

do. You can't be Peter Picasso, you know, it's

40:50

not easy It's not easy, you know, there's

40:52

a lot of critics right first It was

40:54

the NBA three-point line or not the NBA

40:56

that you know, the NCAA NCAA three-point line

40:59

What was wrong with that now? It's

41:01

now it's Kansas. Where where do you

41:03

draw the line? How do you draw

41:05

the line? I told you I finger paint it What

41:08

do you have against Chris Busher? Nothing.

41:10

I got a I got

41:12

something against you I didn't tell him to

41:14

take the you know the inside lane and get on

41:16

the apron It just so happened that I got halfway

41:18

through finger paint and then they came with a brush. So

41:20

what I gonna do We do the whole thing Sound

41:24

pretty lazy actually Did

41:31

you design Darlington now that wasn't me that is

41:33

actually cousin of mine, yeah, there's one heck of

41:35

an oval over there Yeah, your cousin did it.

41:37

Yeah, I do. I do straight lines there. My

41:39

cousin he does the circle I'm sure yeah when

41:42

you're flying to France, you must be you must

41:44

be connecting. You're not going straight there Yeah, no,

41:46

definitely not. Yeah, I didn't think so I'm not

41:48

sure if he's gonna get more work or less work after

41:50

being on the podcast. So yeah, that's

41:52

very interesting Interesting Peter

41:54

Picasso. We appreciate you Explaining

41:57

everything where are you from? What is

41:59

that accent? Yeah, I don't know. That'd be

42:01

a good question. You don't know? Okay. I

42:03

mean, I've never been on camera before. It's

42:06

exciting. Yeah, this is never making any sense. Sorry if I was

42:08

a little nervous. That is gonna do it

42:10

for us on DJD Reloaded. Lots

42:12

of good stuff to listen to this week.

42:15

Besides this podcast, you got the teardown, like

42:17

we mentioned with Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi.

42:19

Actions detrimental with Denny Hamlin, Door

42:24

Bumper Clear. That was an interesting

42:26

one this week. It sure was. Anytime Joel Edmunds is

42:28

on the show, you're

42:30

gonna get an interesting product. It was fantastic

42:32

though. Yeah. Also, the Dell

42:34

Jr. download, Elton Sawyer, back on, and this

42:37

one was really great. I've already listened to

42:39

it, and just learning a little bit more

42:41

about him, his past, his racing history, and

42:43

how he got to where he is right

42:46

now. That was a good one. Yeah, absolutely. Revealing

42:48

some things about the future. Interesting

42:51

comments on hybrids, tires.

42:53

The next Shonara, it's definitely worth

42:55

a listen. Yeah, Dell Jr. also

42:58

on Speed Street. We've been

43:00

all over. Dirty Mo Dough. I know. He's

43:02

a very busy man. But yeah, that will do it for

43:04

us on DJD reload. I hope you enjoyed this show. We'll

43:06

see you next week. Check
