Synopsis: Today was the first day of eurucamp 2014. It started with a workshop day and it was a very nice and cozy beginning of this conference. But there was not only eurucamp but JRuby Conf EU and a Railsgirls workshop as well. Thus we had the opportunity to speak with a variety of people and to cover a lot of different and interesting topics.

Intro (00:00:00)

  • We introduce ourselves, say "Hello" and explain the concept briefly

Luca Guidi (00:04:03)

Luca is the creator of the Lotus web framework for Ruby. He gave a workshop in the morning introducing the framework to beginners and more advanced Rubyist alike. We spoke with him about the design concepts behind Lotus, his work on it and what are its benefits compared to other web frameworks.

Ellen König (00:20:56)

Ellen is a Java developer who loves the Ruby community. She will give a talk about increasing the diversity in our community. In her talk she analyzes the current situation and why it is a problem, then gives some reasons for the current state and finally gives some practical advice on how to improve in that area.

Frank Webber (00:34:25)

Frank Webber enjoyed his first bottles of Club Mate before talking to us. We talked to him about his talk 'Utils is a junk drawer!'. What is in a junk drawer like that and is it less organized than the rest of your application? There are a lot of gems hidden inside of this drawer. We also talked about the personal toolkit that a developer has and discussed ideas on how to share them with us. We also talked about reading code you don't know.

Gerdi & Juli (01:10:38)

Gerdi and Juli were at the Rails Girls workshop this entire day. They told us what they learned and shared their excitement about Ruby and Rails development. Juli especially was surprised to learn how welcoming the community is compared to engineering where she originally comes from.

Eric West (01:17:56)

Eric is a software developer at Lonely Planet. Last year he was one of the students at Google's Summer of Code where he worked on rsense. It is a tool that does static analysis of your source code to determine the types of your Ruby programs. He explained why this is useful and what is involved in building this project.

Christophe Philemotte (01:35:01)

Christophe from PullReview held a workshop about static code analysis this morning. He explained what it is and told us about the tools he introduced at his workshop. We discussed how you can use it and where it can help you. We also talked about Ruby Burgers, a different kind of Ruby meetup he helps to organize in Belgium.

Magda, Ute & Jan (02:00:40)

The Code Padawans Magda and Ute and one of their coaches Jan talked about their Rails Girls Summer of Code projects. They explained what RGSoC is and how they got involved in it. They work at asquera where they learn by doing everything from Scrum to writing their own testing framework in Ruby. We also talked about their upcoming talk at RedFrog Conf and Berlin's impressive Rails Girls community.
