Guest Introduction

My name is Mary-Anne Amies, I am married with two wonderful children aged 4 and 2. When my son was born in 2010 I launched a business while on maternity leave and it has grown since then and I now employ 2 people and am currently converting our granny flat into a bigger office. I was born and raised in Sydney with 2 brothers, my parents moved to Australia from Italy when they were small, and instilled in us strong work ethics and family values, that serve me well today!

A day in the life of Maryanne

Like all mums a day in my life is hectic!! I am up early a few days a week to go to training before the family needs me, I am home at 7 and straight into preschool lunches and preparation, breakfasts and then out the door. I am usually sitting down in my home office around 9 and then the day is a mix of report writing, websites, social media, calls and meetings, before dropping everything at 4 to grab the kids, start kids dinner, then grown up dinner, kids off to bed around 7, a few more hours of work, then I sit down around 9 before falling into bed at 10!!

My biggest tip is throw away thoughts of perfection and to give little kids advanced warning of “what’s next” as I find this helps with smooth transitions.

The best advice you received

Never take hungry kids to the supermarket!!!

Recipes

For the little kids homemade chicken nuggets and chips is my biggest bribe meal. It’s the no convincing dinner that gets eaten without help or pleading. A dip smalls bits of chicken in greek yoghurt then crumbs and shallow fry. Its super yummy.

How have kids changed your world?

Having kids has given me a purpose for everything I do.

What book are you currently reading

My husband and I are reading a book by the author of Gone Girl called Dark Places and I am reading a book on everyday Mindfulness.

What two areas would you like to improve in your life?

Love to learn to slow down and appreciate what’s happening around me.

Love to increase my me time, without the guilt (or getting up at 5.30am for it)

Quick Questions

What website have you signed up to that you actually find value in receiving their emails?

To be honest I am signed up to so many that unless I have a quiet patch I don’t read half of them!

What’s one piece of advice you would give your pre baby self

Travel and buy expensive shoes now while you still can!

What’s the most useful / useless baby item you have?

Most useful was a rocker that I could jiggle with my foot when my daughter was born as it helped when I had to get some work done. Most useless, all the gimmicky things you buy when having your first baby!!

What’s your experience like with day care?

We have a great centre that is small and really loving. My kids though alternate who has the big cry when I go, so every day is a little emotional!

If you have one or more children, was it easier transitioning from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 2 etc

Going from 0 to 1 kid was the hardest.  My second child was easier.
