know those have any far They for

3:51

your thoughts is the where are those

3:53

Are those functional glasses or of those

3:55

so called sixties era T shades? They

3:58

are both and we're to be. mess

4:00

with you. Yeah, they're sort of, they are

4:02

functional, my prescription is in there. But

4:04

I love them because they mute

4:07

the fluorescent light. I see. So

4:10

we don't really realize how much that

4:12

affects your sort of mentality. Right. But

4:15

yeah, I like them and they also look like I

4:17

might know how to play the saxophone. Yeah. The

4:20

trumpet. Now, T.J. Miller is a distinguished

4:22

stand-up comedian. The new album is out,

4:25

it's called Smooth Peanut Butter. My

4:27

understanding that many, of course,

4:29

artists of your caliber have what they call

4:31

merch, T-shirts, etc., etc. Am

4:34

I correct in saying that you are selling peanut

4:36

butter? You're absolutely

4:38

correct, Bob. You've got to understand

4:41

I'm a purveyor of fine foods.

4:43

I have my own line of

4:45

hot sauce, which is pretty great,

4:47

that is Indiana grown. And

4:50

so I was doing that and it was

4:52

going so well, I thought, well, why don't

4:54

I do my own line of peanut butter?

4:56

Because I love peanut butter. I mean, I

4:58

love hot sauce, but I'm a huge peanut

5:00

butter guy. Me too. And

5:03

I got with another Indiana family and we

5:06

have this line of peanut butter. It's the best peanut butter

5:08

you'll ever have. It's almost a

5:10

dessert peanut butter, but we have dark

5:12

chocolate coconut. That's for the ladies. Oh.

5:15

Okay. And then we have cherry chocolate

5:17

with a real dried cherries, milk chocolate

5:19

and honey roasted peanuts. And

5:21

then my favorite is toffee crispy

5:23

with toffee, milk chocolate and rice

5:25

crispy. Oh, wow. Is it called

5:28

T-J, P and J? Close.

5:31

It's T, P, B and J,

5:33

peanut butter. Okay.

5:36

Okay. Okay. Now, stupid question

5:38

number two, does one take a Sharpie

5:40

to sign this at your gigs? Yeah.

5:43

Because I sell it afterwards. That's my

5:45

merch because nobody really needs another

5:49

T-shirt. You know, especially men. I feel

5:51

like every woman in a man's life

5:53

wants him to get rid of T-shirts.

5:55

There's too many T-shirts and none of us

5:58

will get rid of the T-shirts because because

6:00

that's our sentimental, that's our jewelry.

6:02

Yup. We don't wear bracelets

6:04

or earrings, it's you have watches and

6:07

you have t-shirts. And

6:10

some of them will go, well

6:12

what about this one? You got this for free, why don't

6:14

you get rid of that one? I mean you got it

6:16

for free, and we say that's exactly why I'm keeping it.

6:18

Yeah. TJ,

6:20

you have such a great speaking voice, and I

6:22

know you've done a lot of voice acting. Thank

6:24

you, I'm gonna have to say the same to

6:26

you, sir. Oh yeah, but yours has character. Mine

6:29

is just flat Midwestern broadcast standard

6:31

America. The

6:34

Bob and Tom show on 3-14-24. There

6:37

you go. Traffic with Christine.

6:40

Very nice, very nice. TJ

6:42

is on tour, but tell us about the new

6:44

standup album. I wanna say, I think I read,

6:46

do you record it at Nashville? Am I getting

6:48

this right? I recorded it

6:50

at Nashville, Tennessee at Zany's Comedy

6:52

Club, which is a great comedy

6:55

club. I don't know if

6:57

you know Nashville, but it's a bachelorette party that has

6:59

a city somewhere in it. For

7:03

me, there's always great audiences, and

7:05

I felt like I could really

7:07

get the live, my favorite

7:10

comedy albums growing up always had,

7:12

sort of you could feel the show, it felt

7:15

live, it really felt like you were in the

7:17

room, and so I wanted to do

7:19

that, I felt I would probably be able to do

7:21

that at Zany's, and it really worked,

7:24

because I improvise a lot in my standup, sometimes

7:26

I'll improvise half the show, sometimes

7:29

depending on what's going on, I'll improvise the

7:31

entire show, I'll just riff, maybe a little

7:33

bit of crowd work, and

7:35

so I wanted some of that in there, and

7:38

there is the first track, it was

7:40

a really funny moment before I went on stage, I

7:43

sort of went, I was getting ready to go

7:45

up, and his bouncer comes up to me and

7:47

goes, I wanna tell you there's a table that

7:49

is very drunk, I go, okay, which table is

7:51

it? He said, it's table 64, and

7:54

I said, I don't know the numbers in the

7:56

table, and then suddenly they introduced me, ladies and

7:58

gentlemen, TJ Miller, and I go, table is

8:00

it? It's the one that's behind the one

8:02

in front of it. I don't know

8:04

what that is. So then I

8:06

go on stage and probably within

8:09

15 seconds some

8:11

guy yells the craziest thing

8:13

at me. You've got to listen to the album. And

8:16

then I was able to sort it was

8:18

a very drunk thing but it also made

8:20

sense but it didn't. So I sort of

8:23

spun that into sort of a piece of

8:25

improvisation that's just really fun and I felt

8:27

like this needs to be in the album.

8:29

People need to see that no matter what

8:32

happens in a show I'll go where the

8:34

audience takes me. And so that was

8:36

really good and then it's the material, some about the

8:38

pandemics, some just straight jokes and

8:40

all of that. And then some

8:42

stories from my past, some really

8:45

funny ones that I think

8:47

it's a really good kind of menagerie. I

8:49

want to say that so people like me

8:51

less. It's a really good menagerie of what

8:53

I do as a stand-up comic and the

8:55

reason that you should kind of come and

8:57

see me live. T.J., I've

9:00

asked the same question already twice this week. I

9:02

think it was Tom Papa and Paul

9:04

Reiser. I asked this exact question which

9:06

is growing up, I don't know in

9:08

your day if it would have been a cassette or

9:11

if it would have been a vinyl album but one

9:13

of the classic comedy albums. In my case I always

9:15

say it was Robert Klein Child of the 50s.

9:17

That's the album I played 10,000 times. Did

9:19

you have a particular man

9:22

or woman whose album you listen to over and over again? Well

9:26

several. I listened to prior, a lot

9:28

of Carlin, some

9:30

Robert Schimel who just I thought

9:32

was so funny. And then

9:34

but of all those people it was

9:37

Steve Martin. And Steve Martin's

9:39

special from the Hollywood Bowl was something that

9:41

my mother would watch with me when she

9:44

was sort of sad or in a bad

9:46

place or something which wasn't often. But we

9:48

saw, I bet I saw that 50 or

9:50

100 times. And so all of

9:52

his albums I got and Let's

9:55

Get Small, Comedy's Not

9:57

Pretty, Wild and

9:59

Crazy. I think I actually liked

10:01

Let's Get Small the most of anything. And

10:04

I've just heard that hundreds of times. And

10:07

then in preparation for the album, which I

10:09

did 10 drafts

10:11

over 10 mixes, and

10:14

in preparation for that, I was

10:17

listening to everybody's comedy albums. So

10:20

I got to a lot of contemporary

10:22

albums, also Jim Norton and, you

10:25

know, Norm Macdonald has Sketch. Also, Adam

10:27

Sandler's Sketch Comedy album. I thought it

10:29

was so important for me because I

10:31

eventually became a Sketch Comedy

10:33

improviser. I did Second City in

10:35

Chicago. And so that had

10:38

a lot to do with me becoming a Sketch

10:40

Comedy performer and writer. But I

10:42

think Steve Martin all the way. Were you a fan

10:44

of those albums? Oh, yeah. Yeah. And

10:47

it's funny because that was Tom Papa's answer. He went through a

10:49

bunch. Was it really? Yeah, he settled on that

10:51

one. And it just

10:53

kind of depends on how old you are and what era

10:55

it is. But yeah, Steve Martin

10:57

albums are brilliant. Brilliant,

10:59

brilliant. Sorry. And I listened

11:02

to Tom Papa's album and

11:04

was sort of so he that's amazing.

11:06

He said that because he's one of the guys that

11:08

I was listening to and going, what does this feel

11:10

like? Does it feel like you're in the room? Does

11:12

it feel like he was doing it, you

11:15

know, word for word, almost in

11:17

a studio with a studio audience?

11:20

Obviously not in a voiceover booth. But that was really

11:22

important to me, too, is to like get

11:24

something that was like the grace and he is one

11:26

of the greats. So yeah, I'm

11:28

happy to hear that. But let me ask

11:30

you, Tom Papa has a to

11:33

use the contemporary term, a so-called

11:35

side huffle. Tom is

11:38

an excellent baker of bread. TJ Miller, do

11:40

you have anything, any aspect of your life

11:42

that people don't know about that you're actually

11:44

good at other than? Is there

11:46

something like that? I mean, I like you. Why do

11:48

you want to keep an eye on her and hot

11:50

sauce? You know, I like peanut butter and hot sauce.

11:52

Anything else you like a great skier? Do

11:54

you skateboard? Yeah, yeah,

11:57

I literally almost forgot this.

12:00

I was like, what is it? I'm a juggler.

12:02

Oh my god. I've I've juggled I've been juggling

12:04

since I was six And I did it in

12:06

my axe for a while. I have a special

12:08

coming out called philosophy circus And

12:10

I have three specials that are completely improvised

12:12

and one also for nashville that are on

12:15

my youtube channel So if you go on

12:17

my youtube channel You will

12:19

see like so many, uh, there's

12:22

so much content, but i'm releasing

12:24

a special called philosophy circus And

12:26

it has I can juggle Pins

12:29

knives Um torches

12:32

i'm a five ball juggler, which is

12:34

sort of the black belt of juggling

12:36

ball juggling Um, but I

12:38

do a very specific type of juggling that almost

12:41

no one else can do And

12:43

it got me to be a member at

12:45

the magic castle. Wow as a magician member

12:48

In los angeles, which if any of you haven't

12:50

been to the magic castle Tell me

12:52

and i'll send you passes. I just went a

12:54

few months ago. It's amazing. What do you think

12:56

of it? It was so cool Yes,

12:58

it was very cool. Isn't magic amazing

13:01

Yes, this guy this guy wanted to

13:03

call somebody up and I was like call my

13:05

agent up my age She's right here call her

13:07

up and he's like wow, you're really

13:09

exciting to go. I love magic And

13:12

the whole crowd exploded laughing and I was sort

13:14

of not embarrassed, but I was rolling

13:16

my eyes I'm like tj. This isn't really your

13:18

time to be funny. This isn't your audience But

13:21

I became a magician member because I can

13:23

cigar box juggle. Oh, wow. And what that

13:26

is is it's Three blocks.

13:28

It's actually wc fields invented it But

13:30

you've got three blocks having trouble with

13:32

the spatial aspects of this with the

13:35

zoom And there's a middle block

13:37

and two side blocks and you sort of

13:39

manipulate the middle one And flip

13:41

it around and then you take one box.

13:43

Sure grab the other one. Oh, yeah So

13:45

it's it it's really cool. Nobody really does

13:47

it. It's my favorite type of juggling And

13:50

so that sometimes I can just out of

13:52

the blue. I was at a party and

13:55

at kate's friend's house cape, that's my wife

13:58

And Kate's friends are say hey. No,

14:00

you do this orange juggling phase two to

14:02

do it for our kids. We told them

14:04

about it. I said of course. And

14:06

so I hid behind the island in the kitchen and

14:09

then suddenly said we are the performance. And. I

14:11

slowly came up here. I can do this.

14:15

Stuff I know, his rising from

14:17

below his desk. and there's his

14:20

moustache. He's back. And

14:22

Six Three Oranges right? This is

14:24

all physical comedy. Also, you won't

14:26

see any this on the album

14:28

and I Six Three Oranges and

14:31

I juggled them and then slowly

14:33

is usually done with Apple's in

14:35

Bordeaux and Fosters. Such. Juggling

14:37

them, And slowly I

14:39

take a bite out of one.

14:41

young. Really quickly and slowly, I.

14:44

And I spent the entire orange. Oh

14:47

and it is so funny. so shocking

14:49

to zoom. Never seen a man in

14:51

orange without feeling at the center. Some.

14:54

Appear answer is very varied as that.

14:57

That's great. He has any and try

14:59

and okay times but it is is

15:01

so surprising. It's messy, it's funny and

15:04

looks crazy. And so I love

15:06

doing that both for children. And.

15:08

Adults your of the will come to my shows.

15:11

And but they always say a magician.

15:14

I should always be sued Performed

15:16

for children but they loved to

15:18

perform. For. An audience of adults.

15:21

And. I kind of your same way.

15:23

like I love juggling and vaccine sobering. Get

15:25

so excited about it! But. It's also

15:27

funny to do it with adults because all and

15:29

all adults are like. i can

15:31

learn how to juggle lies in the moment

15:34

there like i don't know how he does

15:36

that is a fine and some fun little

15:38

my sign up for next time i come

15:40

in on the the orange as a cool

15:42

i'm in there and studio yeah i know

15:45

you there a couple of other comedians that

15:47

are pretty good jugglers emotional of really are

15:49

shown more he he will fill ups and

15:51

who's the guy that organized michael jackson christmas

15:53

christmas open for michael jackson's five believe it

15:55

or not these are unbelievable toddler or but

15:58

that's a cool physical sky Well,

16:00

I know in a couple of ways that

16:02

you're heading out, are you gonna keep the

16:04

mustache that turns into your sideburns

16:06

for your stage shows? I unfortunately will not

16:09

have this because this weekend my wife and

16:11

I are going to my father's

16:13

80th birthday in Kansas City.

16:17

And I think the greatest, I never give him

16:19

presents because he's one of those guys, don't give

16:21

me any gifts. I don't want any gifts. I

16:24

can buy the gifts that I want. I don't want you

16:26

to give me something that I end up not liking. I

16:29

think the greatest gift that I could

16:31

give him is I didn't get a

16:33

manicure because Cade wanted me to get one

16:35

because I cut my nails on my own. And

16:38

the greatest gift I could give him is

16:41

not showing up with this stage show. I,

16:44

as a man of a certain age, I agree. T.J.

16:47

Miller, the new special, we've had...

16:50

It's gotta be the title of your

16:52

autobiography. The man of a

16:54

certain age. The

16:56

new stand-up album is called Smooth Peanut Butter. And

17:00

here's a dumb question. Can one

17:02
