I've had the opportunity to review a lot

0:02

of different personal statements for people

0:04

who are going to medical school . I've

0:07

been a medical school admissions interviewer and

0:09

I've written my own personal statement as I

0:11

journey to medical school . So today

0:13

, on this episode of the BMAID podcast

0:15

, we're going to tackle how to write a compelling

0:18

personal statement , and I'm even going to share

0:20

parts of my personal statement with you that

0:22

helped me to get two full-ride scholarships

0:24

to different medical schools . So

0:26

before we get started , I want you to first

0:29

follow BlackMed Connect on YouTube

0:31

. If you're listening on a podcast platform

0:33

, be sure to follow and subscribe . Now

0:36

let's jump right into the episode

0:38

. Welcome

0:55

back to the BlackMed Connect podcast . I'm

0:58

your host , dr Jasmine Weiss , and we share

1:00

inspiring stories of Black physicians

1:02

and physicians in training , and

1:04

today I'm going to share with you three tips

1:06

to help you write a compelling personal

1:09

statement . So the first tip

1:11

I have for you is to make sure you

1:13

crush the opening act , just

1:15

like in a play or in a movie , when the action

1:17

gets started . You want to make sure

1:19

your first paragraph of your personal

1:22

statement is something that's very attention

1:24

grabbing . It's something that captures the

1:26

reader's attention and I know this

1:28

sounds unique because you're writing an essay

1:30

to get into medical school . But individuals

1:33

are reading a lot of personal statements and you

1:35

want to do your best to stand out . So

1:38

let me share with you a snippet from my own

1:40

personal statement . When I was applying to medical

1:42

school as a child , it

1:44

was very common for me to stare out of the window

1:46

as the school bus would go by . All

1:49

I wanted to do is go to school , but the

1:51

wheezing , the coughing and the nebulizer

1:53

treatments made this an impossible

1:55

feat . Multiple stays in the hospital

1:58

and recurring doctor's office visits due to my

2:00

asthma were absolutely dreadful

2:02

. The only source of comfort at the doctor's

2:04

office was the pediatrician , whose kind

2:06

words always eased my mind and

2:08

helped me with my illness . My

2:10

experiences with asthma , coupled with

2:12

my pediatrician's compassion , warmth

2:14

and ability to relate to me during my time of

2:16

sickness , sparked my interest in

2:19

medicine At a young age . I

2:21

knew that one day I wanted to reciprocate

2:23

the generosity afforded to me in an effort

2:25

to care for suffering individuals . So

2:28

this was my opening act and

2:30

this was a way to make sure that the readers

2:32

knew my passion for medicine was

2:34

personal and very deep for me . So

2:36

make sure you figure out what's

2:39

important to you and showcase that

2:41

experience in your opening paragraph

2:43

. The second tip I have for you

2:45

is to make sure you showcase your personal

2:47

experiences throughout your personal statement

2:50

. This is not the time to

2:52

be shy . I want you to be sure

2:54

you think about activities that you've

2:56

done that you really really valued

2:58

, that really helped you solidify your

3:00

interest in medicine , and this

3:03

isn't the time to be superficial . I

3:05

want you to be very specific about what

3:07

you learned during the experience , how

3:09

it impacted others and impacted patients

3:12

, and ultimately , how that experience

3:14

helped you move forward as

3:16

you decided to go to medical school

3:18

. Let me share this next excerpt

3:20

with you from my personal statement , where I highlighted

3:22

a particular experience . There was

3:25

a day when every single patient that came into the

3:27

office suffered from high blood pressure , diabetes

3:29

or high cholesterol . A common

3:32

thread amongst the majority of these patients was

3:34

that these individuals were from minority populations

3:37

. While working as an assistant

3:39

office manager for a durable medical equipment

3:41

company , I also noticed that a majority

3:43

of the patients were coming in for diabetic

3:46

supports and motor wheelchairs

3:48

due to amputation , and these individuals

3:50

were often African Americans who were on

3:53

Medicare or Medicaid . Having

3:55

these personal experiences allowed me to see

3:57

the vast effects of lifestyle

3:59

diseases and how they impacted minority

4:01

communities . Being that minorities

4:04

collectively have less access to quality

4:06

, affordable healthcare in the United States , it

4:08

is my desire to be a part of the solution by

4:11

serving underserved populations . As

4:13

the daughter , granddaughter and great-granddaughter

4:15

of three women , each of whom have diabetes

4:18

and high blood pressure , I can identify

4:20

with patients and families who are trying

4:22

to help their loved ones make lifestyle changes

4:25

due to these illnesses . So

4:27

, again , this highlights how my

4:29

own personal family experiences and

4:31

my work experiences and shadowing

4:34

opportunities and shadowing experiences that

4:36

I've had helped me to really become

4:38

interested and passionate about health

4:40

and underserved communities . So

4:42

that's tip number two Make sure you

4:44

showcase the experiences that are important to you

4:46

and why they've helped you to decide

4:49

on a career in medicine . My

4:51

third tip for you is to make sure

4:53

you are authentic when you write your

4:55

personal statement . This is about

4:58

your unique journey , so don't

5:00

try to copy anyone else . Don't

5:02

look at the framework or the way in

5:04

which other personal statements have been written . You

5:07

can use , ultimately , the same kind of opening

5:09

paragraph talk about your experiences

5:12

and , conclusion , make sure you talk

5:14

about something that is very near and dear

5:16

to you . Remember , this personal

5:18

statement will be something that schools will

5:20

read to get to know you better . So

5:23

you don't wanna pick an experience that you think

5:25

is important just because it may have

5:27

been the most popular or most prominent

5:29

experience you had . Pick something that was

5:31

really impactful to you and your journey

5:33

to medicine . So that is my third tip

5:35

for you Make sure you are authentic

5:38

when you're writing your application and

5:40

writing your personal statement . My

5:42

final bonus tip I have for you is

5:44

that this process takes time . So

5:46

I want you to make sure you take some time

5:49

just to brainstorm about what

5:51

type of topic you wanna talk about during

5:53

your personal statement . I want you to

5:55

reflect back on different volunteer

5:57

experiences you've had , any patient

6:00

care experiences you've had . What has happened

6:02

with you personally and your health , or maybe

6:04

even your family or a friend . Make

6:06

sure you take the time to reflect on how all

6:09

of those experiences have shaped you and

6:11

made you the person you are as you pursue

6:13

medical school . So when writing that

6:15

personal statement , I want you to take the time

6:17

to brainstorm . So that's my

6:19

bonus tip for you . So I hope

6:22

you've enjoyed this episode where I shared

6:24

three compelling tips to help you tackle

6:26

your personal statement . I want you to

6:28

remember to hit that personal statement

6:30

hard in the first paragraph . Make sure

6:32

you have a great opening paragraph that

6:34

is interesting and exciting and

6:36

gets the reader engaged in reading your

6:38

personal statement . Then I want to

6:40

make sure you highlight and showcase your personal

6:43

experiences that helped you to

6:45

decide why medicine is a career that's

6:47

important to you . And then don't

6:49

forget to be authentic . Write about something

6:52

that was meaningful to you and impactful

6:54

to you as you write your personal statement

6:56

. I hope you have enjoyed this episode

6:58

. Next week we're gonna also tackle

7:01

a little bit more about the common mistakes

7:03

that people make when writing their personal statements

7:05

. So make sure you tune in . Next week

7:07

. Don't forget to follow

7:09

BlackMed Connect on all podcast

7:11

platforms . And until next time

7:13

, always remember to dream without

7:15

limits . No mistakes

7:18

will be easier than ever in your journey .
