Hello everybody , welcome back to the BlackMedConnect
0:03
podcast , affectionately known
0:05
as the B-MED podcast , where
0:07
we share inspiring stories of Black
0:09
physicians and physicians in training
0:12
. We are so excited for season two
0:14
, and today I want you to think
0:16
about this . Imagine that it's May
0:18
. You're a college student , your
0:20
whole semester has gone by and
0:22
you've blown it . You didn't get the grades
0:25
you want , you didn't accomplish the tasks
0:27
that you wanted to accomplish and you don't even know
0:29
where the time went Well . Today
0:31
we're here to talk about how to make sure that does
0:33
not happen to you . So
0:52
I know you're back on your campus and
0:54
I want to share five tips to make
0:56
sure you strategically plan for your
0:58
spring semester . So let's jump
1:01
right in . So tip number one
1:03
make sure you review and reflect
1:05
on your past semester . I
1:07
want you to think back to the fall . What
1:09
went well ? What classes did
1:11
you take ? Did you learn any new
1:13
study strategies to help you ? Did
1:16
you find a partner to help you study that really
1:18
, really was effective in getting your work done
1:20
? Make sure you take a moment to think
1:22
about what went well last
1:24
semester so you can duplicate it for this
1:26
semester . That
1:33
breaks down into a few key parts
1:35
. Number one you're in
1:37
college to have a good time , yes , but you're also
1:39
there to make sure you do well in your classes
1:42
. So let's focus on that first . What
1:45
are your goals for each class ? What
1:47
do you need to make sure you do to be successful
1:50
at hitting those goals ? Be
1:52
sure to think about your classes and
1:54
how you're going to plan and strategize how to
1:56
do well . When you're also setting clear
1:58
goals , you need to think about the bigger
2:00
picture of being a pre-med . Where
2:03
are you in the journey ? Are you a freshman
2:05
? If so , you need to go ahead and
2:07
think about your summer semester . Are
2:09
you going to take classes ? Are you going
2:11
to work ? Are you going to do shadowing
2:13
? You got to go ahead and think about that now
2:15
, because you have to create that plan . The
2:17
third thing to think about is how are you
2:20
going to have some fun ? How are you going
2:22
to integrate your life , your social
2:24
life and your schoolwork all together
2:26
to make sure you're having a balanced
2:28
, fun time in college but also
2:30
getting the job done ? Tip
2:32
number three make sure you actually
2:34
map out your goals . So
2:37
I want you to actually pull up your calendar
2:39
, put your class schedule on it
2:41
for the year and for the semester and
2:43
actually map out when are you going to
2:45
do the things you need to do to make sure you're
2:47
going to be successful . If you know it
2:49
takes you three hours to study for chemistry
2:52
, go ahead and put that on the calendar that
2:54
you need three hours to study for chemistry
2:56
. If you know you are in
2:58
a sorority and you've got these activities
3:00
, go ahead and put it down so you know exactly
3:03
what you need to do as you move
3:05
from one week to the next . I
3:07
often find that students may
3:09
think they have a plan , but when you ask them
3:11
where is it written down , they don't have it written
3:13
down and they can't go back and review
3:15
it . So make sure for tip number three
3:18
, go ahead and pull out your calendar and actually
3:20
put the tasks on the calendar . Tip
3:23
number four make sure you
3:25
actually set a realistic plan . If
3:27
you have 25 credit hours , that's
3:30
probably not a good idea , right ? Make sure
3:32
you take enough classes to meet the
3:34
needs that you have for the semester , but
3:36
also be realistic about what you
3:38
can handle . If you can't take
3:40
four sciences at one time , that's okay
3:43
. Make sure you go based on
3:45
what you can do and what you can do well
3:47
, it's better that
3:49
you do a few things well and
3:51
get good grades in those classes , focus
3:54
on one or two organizations and get
3:56
ready for your summer than it is
3:58
to pile on more than one thing at one
4:00
time . So make sure you set realistic
4:03
plans when you are preparing
4:05
and creating your strategy for your spring
4:07
semester . Tip number five
4:09
is to make sure you take time
4:11
to recharge . You know
4:14
that this is a long journey . If
4:16
you want to become a physician , you're just
4:18
at the beginning as a college student and as
4:20
a pre-man . So throughout
4:22
the semester I want you to build in some
4:24
time where you take time with yourself
4:26
for self-care and spend time
4:28
with your friends . Go ahead and build
4:30
that in as you develop your study strategy
4:33
and you're really focused and going hard . Make
4:35
sure you take that time to recharge . And
4:38
I have a bonus tip for you too . Tip
4:40
number six is make sure you
4:42
get some support around you and use
4:45
the resources that you have . Something
4:47
my mom always says is use the resources
4:49
available to you . So don't just
4:52
be out here on an island by yourself
4:54
trying to figure it all out on your own
4:56
, disorganized and not knowing
4:58
how to go forward . Make sure you
5:00
reach out to the student organizations
5:02
on your campus to help you create
5:05
the strategy . Utilize your pre-health
5:07
and pre-med advisors and in
5:09
that office to help you Make sure
5:11
that you have a strategy and , last but not
5:13
least , check in with your friends to see
5:16
if they can help push you along the way too . So
5:18
be sure to seek out support and the resources
5:20
that are close to you as well . Those
5:23
are my five tips for you as you build
5:25
a strong strategy for your spring
5:27
semester . Remember I
5:29
want you to review and reflect on
5:32
the first semester of the year what
5:34
went well and what would you like to change
5:36
. Step number two is
5:39
to set clear goals and expectations
5:41
for your semester . What do you want
5:43
to accomplish , not only for your classes
5:46
but as a pre-med ? What do you need to
5:48
accomplish to make sure you're getting ready for medical
5:50
school ? Step number three
5:52
is to make sure you put it on
5:55
the calendar and update that task
5:57
list so that you know , week
5:59
by week , exactly what you need
6:01
to do . Step number
6:03
four is make sure you set a realistic
6:06
plan . Don't try to do
6:08
too much all at the same time in
6:10
the spring . I know it's plenty to do , but
6:12
be clear instead of realistic goal , and
6:15
step number five is to make
6:17
sure you take time to recharge
6:19
to make sure that your semester can go
6:21
as smooth as possible . So
6:24
remember , on your journey throughout this spring
6:26
semester , don't do it alone
6:28
. B-MED is here as a resource
6:31
. We're here to help you succeed
6:33
on your journey to med school . We're
6:35
here to help you build community and , most
6:37
importantly , we're here to connect you to the
6:39
right resources . Remember to
6:41
like , share and subscribe to
6:44
Black Med Connect and we'll catch you in
6:46
the next episode . Always remember
6:48
to dream without limits Ÿè
