0:49

0:51

book of Mackeby's chapter sixteen, CRAC

0:53

chapter thirty eight and thirty nine, Proverbs chapter

0:55

twenty three verses twenty nine through

0:57

thirty five.

0:59

The first book of Macabbies, chapter sixteen.

1:03

John went up from Ghazara and reported

1:05

to Simon his father what Sandebius had done.

1:07

And

1:07

Simon called in his two older sons, Judith

1:10

and John, and said to them,

1:12

I and my brothers, and the house of my

1:14

father have fought the wars of Israel from our

1:16

youth until this day. And things have

1:18

prospered in our hands so that we have delivered

1:20

Israel many times. But

1:22

now, I have grown old. And

1:24

you by his mercy are mature in years.

1:27

Take my place and my brothers and

1:29

go out. and fight for our nation

1:31

and may the help which comes from heaven be with

1:33

you.

1:34

So John chose out of the country twenty

1:36

thousand warriors and horsemen and they marched

1:38

against Sandebius and camped for the night

1:40

in Modine. Early

1:42

in the morning, they arose and marched into

1:44

the plain. and behold a large force of

1:46

infantry and horsemen was coming to meet them

1:49

and a streamline between them.

1:51

Then he and his army lined up against them

1:53

and he saw that the soldiers were afraid to

1:55

cross the stream, so he crossed over

1:57

first. And when his men saw him,

1:59

they crossed over

1:59

after him. Then

2:01

he divided the army and placed the horsemen in

2:03

the midst of infantry for the cavalry of the

2:05

enemy were very numerous. And they

2:07

sounded the trumpets, and Sandebius and

2:09

his army were put to flight, and many of them

2:11

were wounded and fell. The rest fled

2:13

into the stronghold. At

2:15

that time, Judas, the brother of John, was wounded,

2:18

but John pursued them until Sondevius

2:20

reached to Kedron, which he had built. They

2:22

also fled into the towers that were in the fields

2:24

of Azadis and John burned it with fire,

2:26

and about two thousand of them fell.

2:29

And he returned to Judea safely.

2:32

Murder of Simon and his sons. Now

2:35

Tolome, the son of Abubus, had been appointed

2:37

governor over the plane of Jericho, and

2:39

he had much silver and gold for he was

2:41

son-in-law of the high priest. His

2:44

heart was lifted up. He determined

2:46

to get control of the country and made treacherous

2:48

plans against Simon and his sons

2:50

to do away with them. Now, Simon

2:52

was visiting the cities of the country and attending

2:54

to their needs, and he went down to Jericho

2:56

with Matathias and Judas' sons in

2:59

the one hundred and seventy seventh year

3:01

in the eleventh month, which is the month of

3:03

Shabbat. The son of

3:05

Ababouce received them treacherous in the

3:07

little stronghold called dock which he had built.

3:09

He gave them a great banquet and hit men

3:12

there. When Simon and his sons

3:14

were drunk, Tolomi and his men rose

3:16

up, took their weapons, and rushed in

3:18

against Simon in the banquet hall, and

3:20

they killed him and his two sons and some

3:22

of his servants. so he committed an

3:24

act of great treasury and returned evil

3:26

for good. John

3:29

succeeds, Simon. Then

3:31

Ptolemy wrote a report about these things and

3:33

sent it to the king, asking him to send

3:35

troops to aid him and to turn over to him

3:37

the cities and the country. He

3:39

sent other men to Ghazara to do away with

3:41

John. He sent letters to the

3:43

captains asking them to come to him

3:45

so that he might give them silver and gold

3:47

and gifts. and he sent other men

3:49

to take possession of Jerusalem and the temple

3:51

hill. But someone ran ahead

3:53

and reported to John Agazerra that

3:56

his father and brothers had perished. and

3:58

that he has sent men to kill you also.

4:00

When he heard this, he was

4:02

greatly shocked and he seized the

4:04

men who came to destroy him and killed them.

4:07

for he had found out that they were seeking to

4:09

destroy him. The rest of

4:11

the acts of John and his wars and the brave

4:13

deeds which he did and the building of the walls

4:15

which he built and his achievements. Behold.

4:18

They are written in the chronicles of his high

4:20

priesthood from the time that he became high

4:22

priest after his father.

4:28

The Book

4:28

of Siroc chapter thirty eight concerning

4:30

physicians, tradesmen and

4:32

craftsmen. honor

4:34

the physician with honor do him according

4:36

to your need of him. For the Lord created

4:39

him. For healing comes from the

4:41

most high. and he will receive a gift from

4:43

the king. The skill of the

4:45

physician lifts up his head and

4:47

in the presence of great men, he is admired.

4:50

The Lord created medicines from the Earth,

4:52

and a sensible man will not despise

4:54

them. Was not water

4:56

made sweet with a tree in order that his

4:58

power might be known. and

5:00

he gave skill to men that he might be

5:02

glorified in his marvelous works. By

5:04

them, he heals and takes away pain. The

5:07

pharmacist

5:07

makes of them a compound.

5:09

His works will never be finished. And

5:12

from him, health is upon the face of the

5:14

earth. My son.

5:16

When you are sick, do not be negligent.

5:19

but pray to the Lord and he will heal you.

5:21

Give up your faults and direct your hands a

5:23

right and cleanse your heart from all sin.

5:26

offer a sweet smelling sacrifice and

5:28

a memorial portion of fine flour

5:30

and pour oil on your offering as much

5:32

as you can afford. and

5:34

give the physician his place for the

5:36

Lord created him. Let him not

5:38

leave you for there is need of him.

5:40

There is a time when success lies in the

5:42

hands of physicians, for they too

5:44

will pray to the Lord that he should grant them

5:46

success in diagnosis and in healing

5:48

for the sake of preserving life. he

5:51

who sins before his maker, may

5:53

he fall into the care of a physician? My

5:56

son, let your tears fall

5:58

for the dead. and as one who is

6:00

suffering grievously begin the

6:02

lament. Lay out his body with

6:04

the honor, do him and do not neglect

6:06

his burial. Let your

6:08

weeping be bitter and your wailing fervent.

6:11

Observe the morning according to his merit

6:13

for one day or two to avoid criticism.

6:15

Then be comforted for your sorrow. For

6:18

sorrow results in death, and

6:20

sorrow of heart saps one's strength.

6:23

In calamity, sorrow continues and

6:25

the life of the poor man weighs down his heart.

6:27

Do not give your heart to sorrow.

6:30

Drive it away remembering the end

6:32

of life. Do

6:33

not forget. There

6:34

is no coming back. You do

6:37

the dead no good and you injure yourself.

6:40

Remember my doom for yours is like

6:42

it. Yesterday was mine,

6:44

and today it is yours. When

6:47

the dead is at rest, let his remembrance

6:49

cease and be comforted for him when his

6:51

spirit has departed. The

6:54

wisdom of the scribe depends on the opportunity

6:56

of leisure and he who has little

6:58

business may become wise. How

7:00

can he become wise who handles the plow and

7:02

who glories in the shaft of a god who

7:04

drives Oxen and is occupied with their

7:06

work and whose talk is about bulls.

7:09

He sets his heart unplowing furrows,

7:11

and he is careful about fodder for the heffers.

7:14

So too is every craftsman and master

7:16

workman who labors by night as well

7:18

as by day. Those who cut the cygnet

7:21

of seals each is diligent in making

7:23

a great variety. He

7:25

sets his heart on painting a lifelike image

7:27

and he is careful to finish his work.

7:30

So too is the Smith sitting by the animal

7:32

intent upon his handiwork and iron.

7:34

The breath of the fire melts his flesh and

7:36

he wastes away in the heat of the furnace.

7:38

He inclined his ear to the sound of the

7:41

hammer, and his eyes are on the pattern of the

7:43

object. He sets his

7:45

heart on finishing his handiwork and he is

7:47

careful to complete its decoration. So

7:50

too is the potter sitting at his work and

7:52

turning the wheel with his feet. He's

7:54

always deeply concerned over his work

7:56

and all his output is by number. He

7:58

molds the clay with his arm and makes it pliable

8:01

with his feet. He sets his heart

8:03

to finish the glazing and he is careful

8:05

to clean the furnace. All

8:07

these rely upon their hands and each

8:09

is skillful in his own work. Without

8:11

them, a city cannot be established and

8:13

men can neither sojourn nor live there.

8:16

Yet they are not sought out for the council of

8:18

the people nor did they attain eminence

8:20

in the public assembly. They

8:22

do not sit in the judge's seat nor did

8:24

they understand the sentence of judgment.

8:26

They cannot expound discipline or judgment,

8:28

and they are not found using proverbs.

8:30

But they keep stable the fabric of

8:33

the world. and their prayer is in the practice of

8:35

their trade. Chapter thirty

8:38

nine, the student of the

8:40

law and praise of God. On

8:42

the other hand, he who devotes himself to the

8:44

study of the law of the most high will seek

8:46

out the wisdom of all the ancients and

8:48

will be concerned with prophecies. He

8:51

will preserve the discourse of notable men

8:53

and penetrate the subtleties of parables.

8:55

He will seek out the hidden

8:57

meanings of proverbs and be at home with

8:59

the obscurities of parables. He

9:01

will serve among great men and appear before

9:03

rulers. He will travel through the

9:05

lands of foreign nations for he tests

9:07

the good and the evil among men. He

9:10

will set his heart to rise early to seek

9:12

the lord who made him, and will make supplication

9:14

before the most high. He will

9:16

open his mouth in prayer and make

9:18

supplication for his sins. If

9:20

the great lord is willing,

9:22

he will be filled with a spirit of understanding

9:25

will pour forth words of wisdom and

9:27

give thanks to the Lord in prayer.

9:29

He will direct his counsel and knowledge

9:31

rightly and meditate on his secrets.

9:33

He will reveal instruction in his teaching

9:35

and will glory in the law of the Lord's

9:38

covenant. Many will praise his

9:40

understanding and it will never be

9:42

blotted out. His memory will not

9:44

disappear and his name will live through all

9:46

generations. Nations

9:48

will declare his wisdom and the

9:50

congregation will proclaim his praise.

9:52

If he lives long, he will leave a name

9:54

greater than a thousand. And if he goes

9:56

to rest, it is enough

9:58

for him. I have yet more to

10:00

say, which I have thought upon, and I

10:02

am filled like the moon at the full.

10:05

Listen to me, oh, you holy sons.

10:08

and bud like a rose growing by a stream of water,

10:10

send forth fragrance like frankincense

10:12

and put forth blossoms like

10:14

a Lilly. scatter the

10:16

fragrance and sing a hymn of praise.

10:18

Bless the Lord for all his works,

10:21

ascribe majesty to his name and give

10:23

thanks to him with praise. with songs

10:25

on your lips and with liars, and

10:27

this you shall say in thanksgiving. All

10:29

things are the works of the Lord for

10:31

they are very good. and whatever

10:33

he commands will be done in his time.

10:36

No one can say, what is this?

10:38

Why is that? For in god's

10:41

time, all things will be sought after. At

10:43

his word, the waters stood in a heap

10:45

and the reservoirs of water at the word

10:47

of his mouth. At his command,

10:49

whatever pleases him is done, and

10:51

none can limit his saving power. The

10:54

works of all flesh are before him, and

10:56

nothing can be hid from his eyes.

10:58

From everlasting to everlasting,

11:00

he beholded them and nothing is

11:02

marvelous to him. No one can

11:04

say, what is this? Why

11:06

is that? for everything has been

11:08

created for its use. His

11:11

blessing covers the dry land like a river

11:13

and drenches it like a flood. The

11:15

nations will incur his wrath just as

11:17

he turns freshwater into salt.

11:20

To the holy, his ways are straight,

11:22

just as they are obstacles to the wicked.

11:24

From the beginning, good things were created

11:27

for good people just as evil things

11:29

for sinners. Basic to

11:31

all the needs of man's life are water

11:33

and and fire and iron and

11:35

salt and wheat flour and milk and

11:37

honey, the blood of the grape, and

11:39

oil and clothing. All these

11:41

are for good to the godly just as

11:43

they turn into evils for sinners.

11:46

There are winds that have been created for vengeance.

11:49

And in their anger, they discourage heavily.

11:51

In the time of consummation,

11:53

they will pour out their strength and calm the

11:55

anger of their maker. Fire

11:57

and hail and famine and pestilence,

11:59

all these have been created for

12:02

vengeance. The teeth of wild beasts and

12:04

scorpions and vipers and the sword that

12:06

punishes the ungodly with destruction.

12:08

They will rejoice in his

12:10

commands and be made ready on

12:12

earth for their service. And when

12:14

their time comes, they will not transgress

12:16

his word. Therefore,

12:19

from the beginning, I have been convinced.

12:21

and have thought this out and left it in writing.

12:24

The works of the Lord are

12:26

all good, and he will supply

12:28

every need in its hour. And no

12:30

one can say, this is worse than

12:32

that. For all things, we'll prove

12:34

good in their season. So

12:37

now, sing praise with all your heart

12:39

and voice. and bless the

12:41

name of the Lord.

12:44

The Book

12:46

of

12:46

Proverbs chapter twenty three versus

12:49

twenty nine through thirty five.

12:51

Who has whoa?

12:53

Who has sorrow?

12:54

Who has strife? Who has

12:57

complaining? Who has wounds without

12:59

cause? Who has redness of

13:01

eyes? Those who tear

13:03

long over wine? Those who go to

13:05

try mixed wine. Do not

13:07

look at wine when it is red, when it

13:09

sparkles in the cup and goes down

13:11

smoothly. At the last, it bites

13:13

like a serpent and stings like an

13:15

adder. Your eyes will

13:17

see strange things and your mind utter

13:19

perverse things. You will be

13:21

like one who lies down in the midst of the

13:23

sea, like one who lies on the top of

13:25

a mast. They struck me you

13:27

will say but I was not hurt.

13:29

They beat me but I did not

13:31

feel it. When shall I

13:33

awake? I will seek another

13:35

drink.

13:40

Father in heaven, thank you so much. Thank you

13:42

for this day. Thank

13:44

you for not giving up on us and thank you for giving us

13:46

perseverance. Oh god, that's this word,

13:48

this word today of this perseverance and

13:50

the word of choosing to reflect on

13:52

your word, choosing to reflect on your

13:54

wisdom, and choosing to reflect on how

13:56

your wisdom is meant to guide and shape our

13:58

lives. We ask you to please guidance

14:00

shape our lives today. Guide our steps are right

14:02

that we may do your will and may see your

14:05

face. Lord God help us to be sober and

14:07

thought and mind help us to

14:09

choose well and live

14:11

wisely so that

14:12

in all things, you may be glorified. In all

14:14

things, your people may be sanctified. In

14:16

Jesus' name, we pray amen, the name of the father

14:18

and of son of the holy spirit. Amen. Wow. So

14:20

chapter twenty three at the end of book of proverbs

14:22

gets intense. Right? Who

14:24

has woe, who has sorrow, who has strike, who is

14:26

complaining? was wounds without cause,

14:28

horrendous of eyes, those who drink,

14:30

and that sense of, like, gosh, this

14:32

out of nowhere almost. you know,

14:34

kind of like Proverbs are just, you know, these

14:36

pearls strung along. They're

14:38

not

14:38

all connected by anything other than the fact that

14:41

they're here written as wisdom in the book

14:43

of Proverbs. But we have

14:45

these last verses twenty nine through

14:47

thirty five in chapter twenty three of

14:49

proverbs that just talks about

14:51

this, yeah, How many lives have

14:53

been completely ruined? As

14:55

it says, it says, when it

14:57

sparkles in the cup, it goes down

14:59

smoothly. at the last, it bites

15:01

like a serpent and stings like an adder.

15:03

Your eyes will see strange things in your mind,

15:05

under perverse things, you know. There is an element

15:07

where the scripture does talk about alcohol and says, you

15:09

know, why gives joy to the heart. It always

15:11

gives warm fill heart and makes one

15:13

merry. We actually, a couple of days ago, we

15:15

heard of how wine or

15:17

music in a a setting. What

15:19

did they say? The jewel, like

15:21

a jewel in a setting of gold, is

15:24

music in the presence of, you know, a party

15:26

with wine. Okay. There's an element there where there's

15:28

some goodness. But there's also destruction. I

15:30

mean, and that and that is just like how in

15:32

the book of Siroc chapter thirty nine,

15:34

The author talks about how there are good things

15:36

that can be used for evil. In fact, in

15:38

chapter thirty nine in verse twenty

15:40

four, it says, to the holy

15:42

his ways are straight just as they are obstacles

15:44

to the wicked. Now the

15:47

same blessing right can be used

15:49

in a wicked way. So it goes on to verse twenty

15:51

five. From the beginning, good things were

15:53

created for good people just as evil things

15:55

for sinners. Now, is that to say that

15:57

God created evil things? No. But we're talking

15:59

about how the good things are

16:01

used well by good people,

16:04

and good things are then used

16:06

poorly

16:06

by

16:08

centers, by those those here's

16:10

God who makes all things good. We

16:12

can either use those things for good or use

16:14

those things for evil because the

16:16

next verse is key. In verse

16:18

twenty six, it says basic to all the

16:20

needs of man's life are water

16:22

and fire and iron and salt

16:24

and wheat flour and milk and honey, the blood of

16:26

the grape, aka wine, and oil

16:28

and clothing. All these

16:30

are for good to the godly just as

16:32

they turn into evils for sinners. So

16:35

again, these are all goods, because the

16:37

only thing God makes is good, and

16:39

yet, we can abuse that. Just going

16:41

back to, again, we have, from the book

16:43

of Proverbs, here is the folly

16:45

of using

16:46

wine the wrong way, using alcohol the

16:49

wrong way. just as earlier, we

16:51

heard about how, oh, this is gonna be used the right way.

16:53

This can be used in a way that that is

16:55

in moderation and is

16:57

not destructive. In that

16:59

reality, of course, is that we walk amongst this

17:01

world. We walk in the midst of this world.

17:03

We're surrounded by things that are good.

17:05

We can either use those things for

17:07

good. We can use them in the right way

17:09

at the right time, or

17:11

we cannot. Again, remember, we talked about

17:13

this so many times. the book of

17:15

Sarak and later on in a couple few days from now, we're

17:17

gonna be looking at the book of Wisdom, which is just

17:19

gonna blow your mind. You're gonna love it. I'm telling

17:21

you right now. is about the pursuit of

17:24

wisdom. What is wise living? What is

17:26

prudence? Prudence is doing the right thing

17:28

at the right time in the right

17:30

way. and that along with prudence, using the

17:32

right thing at the right

17:33

time, the right way. And yet,

17:35

we also

17:35

recognize that we can be tempted

17:37

to not do that. And that is why we have

17:40

Proverbs chapter twenty three, the end of chapter

17:42

twenty three, and CRAC thirty nine

17:44

talking about this. Just one

17:46

one incredible incredible gift. That's one of the

17:48

reasons why no one can say at the end

17:50

of Cirec thirty nine. No one can

17:52

say this is worse than that. For all

17:54

things, we'll prove they're good in their season. everything

17:56

God has made is ultimately for good.

17:58

And that doesn't mean that, again, it doesn't mean

18:00

that things that God has been made, like

18:02

privations or things God hasn't

18:04

made are good. But every good

18:06

thing that exists is good

18:08

in itself because of the fact that it

18:10

exists. Once again, verse thirty three of

18:12

chapter thirty nine, the works of

18:14

the Lord are all good and he will supply every

18:17

need in its hour. Just

18:19

what an incredible gift we get

18:21

to experience this book of Siroc

18:24

and also had to have concluded the book of

18:26

first back of these. We get to the end

18:28

and here is John and Now

18:30

John, the son of Simon, is the one who's taking

18:32

over and that's

18:34

gonna

18:34

be more or less kind of the

18:36

last we're gonna hear until

18:38

the testament because we have one more book

18:41

left. You guys, this is crazy. We have one more

18:43

book left. We have fifteen chapters left. We

18:45

have fifteen days left. until

18:47

we live in the new testament, until everything

18:49

we read actually except for proverbs. Okay?

18:51

But almost everything we're gonna read

18:53

in fifteen days, is from

18:55

the new testament, which is just, hopefully,

18:57

you are pumped about that. I'm also

18:59

really pumped about tomorrow in second

19:02

maccabees because Again, you might have gotten

19:04

bogged down by the history lesson of first

19:06

maccabees and maybe all the names and all the

19:08

Greeks names and all the people of kings fighting and

19:10

who belongs to who and who's fighting

19:12

against who who's fighting for

19:14

what? But in second mechanism, we're gonna

19:16

take a little turn, as I said before. And

19:18

it is gonna be a different perspective

19:20

on same story. A little bit like how we

19:22

had numbers in deuteronomy, kinda telling the

19:24

same story, we had kings and chronicles, kinda telling

19:26

the same story. Here's first and second McAfee's

19:29

kinda sorta generally speaking, telling the same story. But here

19:31

we are. On this day, day two hundred

19:33

ninety seven. Oh, man. What

19:35

a gift? So we seek

19:37

wisdom, we ask the lord to give us wisdom, we ask the

19:39

lord to give us this grace that if we've

19:41

fallen today, that he helps us

19:43

stand back up, that he picks us

19:45

back up. If you have volatility, if you've

19:47

struggled today, just know that you're not

19:49

alone. You're not alone. And whatever it is you

19:51

might be struggling with right now today, Even

19:53

sometimes those words about alcohol, sometimes

19:55

they can they can hit us and they

19:57

can be that spark that gets us

19:59

thinking about
