The New York Times reported in May 2015 the results from a large social mobility study out of Harvard that found that access to good, reliable transportation is a huge factor in determining economic mobility. In a large, continuing study of upward mobility based at Harvard, commuting time has emerged as the single strongest factor in the odds of escaping poverty. The longer an average commute in a given county, the worse the chances of low-income families there moving up the ladder. The report points to a similar conclusion from New York University’s Rudin Center for Transportation, focusing on New York (https://www.nytimes.com/2015/05/07/upshot/transpor...The most evident results of the lack of adequate and appropriate transportation are the high post-harvest losses on farms, the high mortality rate of pregnant women and children due to lack of access to health facilities and the high rate of accidents killing productive labour force year in year out.

My name is Jonas Aryee. I am a transport economist, lecturer, and advocate for sustainable transportation. I have been part of transport working groups at the Ministry of Transport in Ghana and worked as a consultant on the Trans African Highway in Liberia. My podcast, the African Transportation Convos, is one way that I advocate for good transportation systems in Africa to lift the populace from poverty. Your support will make this passion of mine a priority above my other responsibilities but most importantly push this initiative a notch higher by engaging decision-makers and influencers who can make a change.
