I'm Dr. Calisa Pierce, the Associate Dean for Curriculum Development at BridgeValley and a faculty member who teaches English and humanities. My doctorate is in Educational Leadership Studies with a Humanities concentration, and my master's and bachelor's degrees are in English. I'm also almost done with a second master's degree in Humanities.
I live in the Charleston area with my husband and our three dogs--all mutts, all of them rescues. I have two grown children. My son Kevin is working on his doctorate at UBC in Vancouver while also spending as much time as he can mountain biking, kayaking, hiking up tall mountains, and whatever other dangerous hobbies he can come up with. My daughter Kelsey works at IU, where she recently graduated with two master's degrees. She is a newlywed with one daughter and a son on the way.
I love motorcycle touring with my husband Jim. We've checked off all the lower 48 states in our travels now, along with several Canadian provinces. Other hobbies include hiking, gardening, camping, fishing, writing, singing, and reading, but I do too few of those things these days.
Here's my pic from a real milestone in my life--a nine-mile hike up one of the highest mountains in North Carolina last November to a hiking lodge where I stayed with my family. I worked hard to build up my endurance to make the hike; as an academic, I've spent an awful lot of my life sitting in a chair. The successful hike up and back down Mt. LeConte (back down in the snow!) was a proud accomplishment for me.
