2:00
he had a little squirrel wife called Goody.
2:04
Timmy Tiptoes sat out, enjoying the breeze.
2:07
He whisked his tail and chuckled. Little
2:11
Wife Goody, the nuts are ready. We
2:13
should lay up a store for winter
2:15
and spring. Goody
2:18
Tiptoes looked up. She was
2:20
busy pushing moss into all the cracks in
2:22
their little nest, making sure it would stay
2:24
warm no matter how cold it got outside.
2:27
I don't know how much more food we need. The nest is
2:29
so snug. I think
2:32
we might hibernate all winter. Then
2:34
we will wake up as skinny as sticks
2:37
when there is nothing to eat in the
2:39
springtime, said Timmy. So we should
2:41
put aside a lot of nuts now, so when we
2:43
wake up, there will be a feast waiting. Oh,
2:47
a feast, said Goody. I think
2:50
that's just the right idea. They
2:53
held hands and walked over to the old nut thicket.
2:55
This close to winter, of
2:58
course, they found other squirrels were there already, swarming
3:00
madly to snatch up every last nut and acorn.
3:04
There were plenty left, but they
3:06
were going fast. Let's
3:11
get to it, said Goody. Timmy took off his jacket
3:13
and hung it on a twig, and
3:15
then they worked away quietly
3:18
by themselves. Every
3:20
day that week, they made several journeys back to the nut thicket
3:22
and picked as much food as they could carry. They
3:27
hauled them away in bags and stored them
3:29
in several hollow stumps near the tree where
3:31
they had built their nest. When
3:34
these stumps were full, they began to empty
3:36
the bags into a hole high up in
3:39
a tree. The hole
3:41
had belonged to a woodpecker, so it was just big
3:43
enough for the nuts, which
3:46
rattled down, down, down inside
3:48
the hollow old tree. How
3:52
are we going to get them out again? Is
3:54
it like a piggy bank? said Goody.
3:58
Oh, I'll be much thinner before springtime.
4:00
my love," said Timmy Tiptoes,
4:02
peeping into the hole and then
4:04
staring at his plump figure. "'A
4:06
winter of hibernating will get me
4:08
into fighting shape, and I'll slip
4:10
right in for the feast.'" "'If
4:12
you say so,' said Goody,
4:15
not entirely convinced. Still,
4:17
they collected one of the most
4:19
impressive acorn hordes that squirrels had
4:21
ever seen. This is
4:24
because they didn't lose their nuts. It's
4:26
a well-known secret in the squirrel community
4:28
that squirrels who bury their nuts in
4:31
the ground lose more than half of
4:33
them because they can never quite remember
4:35
where they put them. This is
4:37
bad for the squirrels, but results in
4:39
a lot more nut trees growing over
4:41
time, which is good for the squirrels,
4:43
so overall it's kind of a wash.
4:47
But Timmy and Goody, they had their
4:50
piggybank tree, so they didn't lose a
4:52
single scrap of food. Other
4:55
squirrels, forgetful squirrels, started to
4:57
get jealous. The
5:00
most forgetful squirrel in the
5:03
whole wood was called Silvertail.
5:06
He began to dig at random because he
5:08
couldn't remember where he put his food. One
5:11
hole he happened to dig hit some nuts that
5:13
didn't belong to him, and there was a fight.
5:16
The other squirrels began to dig
5:18
in a frenzy. The whole wood
5:20
was in commotion. Unfortunately,
5:24
just at this time, a flock
5:26
of little birds flew by from
5:28
bush to bush searching for green
5:30
caterpillars and spiders. There
5:33
were several sorts of little birds
5:35
Twittering different songs. The
5:38
first heard the squirrels fighting and
5:40
began to repeat them. Who's been
5:42
digging up my nuts? Who's been digging up
5:45
my nuts? It sang out, and
5:47
another sang, little bit of
5:49
bread and no cheese, little bit of
5:51
bread and no cheese. The
5:54
squirrels followed and listened. The
5:56
first little bird flew into the bush where
5:59
Timmy and Goody tipped tiptoes were quietly
6:01
tying up their bags and it sang,
6:03
Who's been digging up my nuts? Who's been
6:06
digging up my nuts? Timmy
6:09
tiptoes went on with his work without replying.
6:12
Indeed, the little bird did not expect
6:14
an answer. It was only singing its
6:16
natural song and it meant nothing at
6:18
all. But when the other
6:20
squirrels heard that song and thought that someone
6:22
had caught a thief. Rushing
6:25
in, they saw only Timmy, so they rushed
6:27
in and bit and scratched him and knocked
6:29
over his bag of nuts. The
6:32
innocent little bird, which had caused all the
6:34
trouble, flew away in a fright. Timmy
6:37
rolled over and over and slipped away
6:40
through the angry crowd. He
6:42
turned tail and fled towards his
6:44
nest, followed by a crowd of
6:46
squirrels shouting, Who's been digging up my
6:48
nuts? They
6:51
caught him and dragged him up the very
6:53
same tree where there was the little round
6:55
hole. Oh,
6:57
here's where he's been hiding all the
6:59
stolen nuts, one cried. I
7:02
haven't stolen anything, said Timmy, but
7:04
they didn't listen. They pushed
7:06
him into the little hole in the piggy bank tree.
7:09
The hole was much too small for
7:12
Timmy tiptoe stout figure to squirrel blubber
7:14
bunched up and caught on the sides.
7:17
Please, I'm too plump, he
7:20
wheezed, but they didn't listen. Get
7:22
in there, you thief. The
7:25
whole group of squirrels all pushed at
7:27
once. Timmy gave a
7:29
woom-foom-foom sound and all at once
7:31
popped through the hole and tumbled
7:33
down, down, down the inside of
7:35
the hollow tree. He
7:38
finally landed with a clattering splash on
7:40
the pile of nuts he had stored
7:42
in the bottom. Stay
7:45
there until spring, shouted silver
7:47
tail squirrel, glad that someone else had been blamed. I'll show
7:50
you to go around digging up other
7:52
squirrels' food. Timmy
7:57
tiptoes was too stunned to reply. He
8:00
lay stunned and still on the top
8:02
of the acorns, groaning softly and rubbing
8:04
at his chafed sides. He
8:07
wondered what his wife must be thinking. Goody
8:10
tiptoes had seen none of the commotion,
8:12
and assumed Timmy was just out getting
8:15
more nuts. She picked
8:17
up her own nutbags and went home. She
8:20
made a cup of tea for Timmy,
8:22
but he didn't come home, and didn't
8:24
come home, and even after dark, he
8:26
still didn't come home. Goody
8:30
tiptoes passed a lonely and
8:32
unhappy night all alone, tossing
8:34
and turning in bed. The
8:37
next morning, she ventured back to the nut bushes
8:39
to look for him, but the other
8:41
unkind squirrels drove her away, calling her
8:44
the wife of a thief. She
8:47
wandered all over the wood, calling, Timmy
8:51
tiptoes! Timmy tiptoes!
8:54
Oh, where is Timmy tiptoes?
8:58
In the meantime, Timmy tiptoes came
9:00
to his senses. He
9:03
found himself tucked up in a little moss
9:05
bed, very much in the dark, feeling sore.
9:07
It seemed to be underground.
9:10
Timmy coughed and groaned because his ribs
9:12
hurt him. There was a
9:15
chirpy noise and a small scuffle and
9:17
rolling of nuts. Hello,
9:20
said Timmy. Who's there?
9:23
And a small striped chipmunk
9:25
appeared. He held up a little
9:28
nightlight. Uh, are
9:30
you okay? I'm
9:33
okay, said Timmy, suddenly
9:35
remembering everything. He was trapped
9:37
in the bottom of his piggy bank tree. But
9:40
what is happening down here? Is there
9:42
a way out? The
9:44
chipmunk explained that it had rained nuts through the
9:47
top of the tree, but there was no other
9:49
way in or out. It
9:51
laughed and chuckled when it heard Timmy's story,
9:53
and together they set up an extra bed
9:55
so Timmy could rest and heal. He
9:58
vowed that he wouldn't eat much. so he might
10:00
fit back out the hole and go home to Goody. But
10:03
the chipmunk was too excited to have company.
10:06
He kept trying to food him. Just
10:09
another nut, man, or two nuts, you know?
10:11
Let me crack them for ya, said the
10:13
chipmunk. How about some nut
10:16
pancakes? Or how about a nut roast?
10:18
Maybe just a little bit of candied
10:20
nuts? Timmy
10:22
tiptoes ate and ate and grew
10:24
rounder and rounder. Now
10:28
Goody tiptoes had set to work again by
10:30
herself, sure that her husband would
10:32
be home eventually. She didn't
10:34
put any more nuts into the woodpecker's hole
10:36
because she had always doubted how they could
10:38
get them out again. She
10:41
hid them under a tree root. They
10:43
rattled down, down, down. Once,
10:46
when Goody emptied an extra big bag full,
10:48
there was a decided squeak. And
10:50
next time Goody brought another bag full,
10:52
a little striped chipmunk scrambled out in
10:54
a hurry. It
10:57
is getting perfectly full up downstairs. The
10:59
sitting room is jam-packed and nuts are
11:01
rolling along the hallway. What
11:03
is the explanation of these showers of
11:06
nuts? Oh,
11:08
I'm sure I beg your pardon. I
11:10
didn't know that anybody lived here, said
11:13
Mrs. Goody tiptoes. Uh,
11:15
well, I do, said the chipmunk named
11:17
Mrs. Hacky. My
11:20
husband did as well, but he hasn't come home
11:22
in weeks. He
11:25
hasn't? Where did he go? My
11:27
husband, Timmy Tiptoes, has run away as well.
11:32
Oh, I know where my husband is, said Mrs.
11:34
Hacky. A little bird
11:36
told me that he ran away to live in a
11:38
tree full of nuts. He'd rather
11:40
eat all day than spend time with his
11:42
wife. She shook her head. I
11:46
don't know where we'd find such a tree, though. Oh,
11:49
I know that tree, said Goody. I
11:52
know just the place. Well,
11:55
then let's go, said
11:57
the chipmunk. Lead the way. Goody
12:00
Tiptoes did lead the way to the woodpecker's tree
12:03
and they listened at the hole. Down
12:06
below there was a noise of nutcrackers
12:08
and a squirrel voice and a chipmunk
12:10
voice were singing together. My
12:13
little old man and I fell out, how
12:15
shall we bring this matter about? Bring it
12:17
about as well as you can and get
12:19
you gone, you little old man. I'm
12:23
too big, said Goody Tiptoes, but you
12:25
could squeeze in through that little round
12:27
hole. Yes,
12:30
I could, said the chipmunk, but
12:32
I won't. Why
12:34
not? asked Goody. My
12:37
husband, Mr. Hacky, he
12:39
bites. Down
12:41
below there was a noise of cracking nuts
12:44
and nibbling and then the squirrel voice and
12:46
the chipmunk voice could be heard laughing about
12:48
something. Then
12:50
Goody peeped in at the hole and called down.
12:54
Timmy Tiptoes? Oh,
12:56
Timmy Tiptoes! And
12:58
Timmy replied, is that you, Goody
13:00
Tiptoes? Why certainly, my
13:03
wife has come at last! He
13:06
came up and kissed Goody through the hole, but
13:08
he was so round from the chipmunk's cooking
13:10
that he couldn't get out no matter how
13:12
he squeezed. Mr.
13:15
Hacky was not too round, but he did not
13:17
want to come and leave all the hundreds and
13:19
hundreds of nuts. He stayed
13:21
down below and chuckled. And
13:24
so it went on for two weeks until the
13:26
night of the big storm. It came
13:28
raging through and a fierce wind blew off
13:31
the top of the tree. It
13:33
cracked like thunder and opened up a jagged
13:36
hole and let in the rain. It
13:39
poured so hard that all the acorns
13:41
in the tree began to float and
13:43
Timmy was able to make his escape.
13:46
He scrambled out of the hole in the
13:48
tree and ran home, wishing all the way
13:50
for his umbrella. Still,
13:52
soaked and sodden, he got in
13:54
the door and hugged his wife,
13:56
happy to finally be freed. But
14:00
Mr. Hackey continued to camp out for
14:02
another week, although it was uncomfortable. He
14:05
preferred the treasure of food to the company of
14:07
anyone else. At last,
14:09
a large bear came walking through the
14:11
wood. Perhaps he was also
14:13
looking for nuts. He seemed
14:16
to be sniffing around Mr. Hackey's tree an
14:18
awful lot. Finally, he tore
14:20
into it with a big brown paw,
14:22
and then Mr. Hackey went home in
14:25
a hurry. Timmy
14:27
and Goody settled in for a long and
14:29
pleasant winter. They managed to salvage
14:32
a good amount of nuts from their piggy
14:34
bank tree, and now they keep them safe
14:36
at home, fastened up with a little padlock.
14:39
It's just safer that way. The
