According to the American Nurse Association, the modern definition of nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of client’s health and abilities, the prevention of disease and illness, and the alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response to disease and injury. This comprehensive definition was centuries in the making.
When we look back over the centuries of nursing long before Nightingale, we find a world-wide consensus of what nursing is.
