1:16

1:18

1:23

lawyer will be. There's no box

1:25

of gaming you know, deal and

1:28

rumor and innuendo and what

1:30

in there I will say I

1:32

so love I don't really. Nice

1:36

hair fact you. Know.

1:44

He came down to. The.

1:51

Local. Dampers.

1:54

Pritchard. A: It's Gonorrhea Thompson and

1:56

you're listening to Something to wrestle

1:58

with Burst Pritchard. And. Void

2:00

we have a treat for you. Today

2:02

is the whole effort and so. Maybe.

2:05

One of the most thorough examination

2:07

of Rob Van Damme the has

2:09

ever been done. And. This

2:11

is from way back when we recorded

2:13

this more than six years ago. Was.

2:16

April twentieth: Twenty Eight

2:18

team. Pretty wild.

2:20

Think about. How. Much has

2:22

changed and Bruce's life as professional

2:25

wrestling. From. April of twenty eighteen

2:27

to now, but that's when we first

2:29

talked about robbing them. You hear how

2:31

we broke into the business? You hear

2:33

about visiting Japan getting the break it

2:35

easy derby. But the really big break

2:37

coming. When. He became Mr. Monday

2:39

night. On. Monday Night Raw

2:41

and Ninety Ninety Seven. He also

2:44

hear about. Paul. Heyman

2:46

Management style. At

2:49

the time. The. First time robbing

2:51

them ever Met Vince Mcmahon. When.

2:53

The company started actually make overtures to

2:55

sign rob the first time. Who.

2:58

Actually, arrange a meeting with Jr and

3:00

so much more. There's a ton

3:02

of great detail and here. And.

3:04

I. It's a classic episode of Something

3:06

To Wrestle With Bruce Pritchard. And

3:09

of course, where do and it just in

3:11

time for for twenty For those of you

3:13

who celebrate. Is. Pretty wild the think

3:15

that are. Robbing. Them.

3:18

On. For twenty. As. With

3:20

the sing this morrow still wrestling. Crazy.

3:23

That's awesome. We. Are

3:25

we intended to work? I get a new

3:27

there another new episode of or something to

3:29

wrestle this week with Bruce, but. As.

3:32

Has been the case for a bit. He. Is

3:34

our our pockets and unavailable

3:36

to record? Birthday.

3:38

What is available. Film.

3:41

Have. You ever try to break a bad habit?

3:44

Ever feel like you're climbing Mount Everest and

3:46

flip flops? We've all been there. But.

3:48

Here's a breath of fresh air. Film.

3:50

Is. He thought about giving up. It's about

3:53

switching up. Theme. Takes your habit

3:55

and simply makes it better, healthier, and

3:57

a whole lot more enjoyable. Film.

3:59

Isn't. Innovative award winning flavored air

4:01

device. The does just that. You.

4:04

See is that a vapor few

4:06

muses, flavored air and set of

4:08

electronics see him as completely natural.

4:10

And instead of harmful chemicals see

4:12

him uses delicious flavors digging it.

4:15

Instead of bad, film is good.

4:18

It's. A habit you're free to enjoy

4:20

and it makes replacing your bad

4:22

habits easy. Your. Few comes with

4:24

an adjustable airflow doll and is designed

4:26

with movable parts and magnets for fidgeting

4:29

given your finger something to do with

4:31

says from a helpful if you're distressing

4:33

and maybe get some anxiety about breaking

4:35

your habit. With. Starts about

4:37

as before but my wife had a bad

4:39

habit when we first met hours of the

4:41

biggest fan that bad Habits he tried started

4:43

trying some different things. But. We'll see

4:46

you. She was blown away with how flavorful

4:48

or was it was very fresh those the

4:50

words use. This is very fresh. And.

4:52

It's a sort of reminds her of like

4:55

a refreshing herbal tea. And.

4:57

If vapor was compared, the

5:00

sticky soda. Fume. Flavors

5:02

would compare to. Herbal

5:05

tea thought a sweet and it's a

5:07

lot more natural. It's will waited is

5:09

perfectly balanced. It's extremely fun to fidget

5:11

with. An. On going to tell

5:13

you it's made of a real would. It's

5:15

a beautiful shape. you're just going to feel

5:17

cool using it. Plus Film has just released

5:19

a magnetic stand for your fumes so there's

5:21

no more losing it around the house. It's

5:23

built with fidgeting and mine. he can spend

6:00

without further ado man, let's talk about

6:02

it. Mr. Monday night.

6:04

Rob. Van Damme right

6:06

here on something to wrestle

6:09

with. Bruce. Pritchard.

6:12

Somebody who knew how to look good. Well.

6:15

Lesser man Rob Van Dam. And

6:17

of course we're celebrating him today

6:19

on for twenty. Why

6:22

are we doing this on April Twentieth? Bruce. Because

6:25

that's who they are. Show Jobs!

6:28

This is on Friday and in

6:30

the day to day when the

6:32

showed off his a twentieth four

6:34

twenty a like him. Well of

6:36

course. Ah Robert Alex Zapped House

6:38

was born on December eighteen nineties

6:40

you ever the and a success

6:43

the same birthday as see. Often.

6:46

More happy Birthday C N Battle

6:49

free Michigan which I think the

6:51

cell phone because one who's an

6:53

easy though you they used to

6:55

switch it up with him and

6:57

sambo and say he obama a

7:00

messy and and battle for be

7:02

a good self you from a

7:04

a freak before brief selfridge India

7:06

was their yards past this past

7:09

summer and got the muslims or

7:11

bends down the same Mazuz revenge

7:13

in India. So. I'm. Rob

7:15

becomes interested martial arts when he's

7:17

watching on television and starts to

7:19

mimic those moves that like thirteen

7:21

or fourteen when he first is

7:23

exposed the wrestling about fifteen years

7:25

old together with all of his

7:27

friends and my wife and wrestled

7:30

each other but before that he

7:32

actually attended Wrestlemania three and a

7:34

friend was that works in Pontiac

7:36

fan of for of the show

7:38

with They'll before so like to

7:40

get some rose Twenty four and

7:42

he was a big Jake the

7:44

Snake family. Brought signs and I'm A. He

7:46

was a superfan and is sort of famously

7:48

and I think a lot of people remember

7:50

this. They did the Ted

7:52

the be awesome Million Dollar Man see it

7:54

more. Can you tell us about Robin Damn

7:56

and then skip. You know,

7:59

Rob told me. When I

8:01

first met him one the first times

8:03

that I met him because you know

8:05

I was one of those people that

8:07

came out of the audience and did

8:09

warn Teddy be Ossies will you do

8:11

this for money deals? A gruelling and

8:13

he actually did the kiss my feet

8:16

thing with Teddy Be and got paid

8:18

as show in Michigan. One time we

8:20

were back and actually found the footage

8:22

and it was robbed. Scowls Key that.

8:25

There. Was there's also that was pretty damn

8:27

cool. He was a mega fan. That is

8:29

cool and I think that's like eighty seven.

8:32

Ah, But the so that the think the

8:34

first time he see him in a

8:36

Wwf ring in Nineteen? Ninety Seven Or

8:38

yes, Jeff Hardy and Robert really have

8:40

a lady seven. Ah, for

8:42

this million elements. Here was this conference

8:44

he sort of came up in the

8:46

business were in a different era, almost

8:49

a different time and he worked a

8:51

lot of his first masses with Greg

8:53

Valentine. And those are two names. Vinyl

8:55

thank you. Think about. sort of come in and

8:57

together. Ah, I'm. I

8:59

think a lot of people have heard the

9:02

story though of how Rob. Sort. Of

9:04

God in the business and was trained. What?

9:06

Do you remember about Rob getting into the business of

9:08

the stories that you've heard. The

9:10

other the main stories that I

9:12

heard about Rob was obviously that

9:14

he had trained with the original

9:16

see good far had out of

9:18

Detroit, Michigan and the seek was

9:20

the first one that really. Took.

9:23

An interest in Rob and really taught

9:25

him how to work in the business.

9:27

When I say taught him out of

9:29

work the seat didn't teach a buddy

9:31

how to work at first. The seek

9:33

taught you. To. Respect the

9:35

business and he showed

9:37

you. Holds and taught

9:40

you the real. Real.

9:42

Real wrestling and Meiji respect the business

9:44

First long before he ever smart job

9:47

that the business was a work made

9:49

sure that you were tough enough physically

9:51

and mentally to be in the business

9:54

in the first place. And

9:57

before he decides actually get into

9:59

wrestling. Ada some tough man contests

10:01

and finish the second. Ah any

10:04

thinks he can do that because he been

10:06

training to kick box. But. Then

10:08

one day ironically. Ah

10:10

he has a chance meeting. And.

10:12

Gets an opportunity to start training with

10:14

The Seat and Ninety moving on. And.

10:17

That chance meeting happens when.

10:20

He's in a grocery store bagging

10:22

groceries. For. A living. And

10:24

prior to that he had sort of flirted with the

10:26

idea a killer Kowalski, but he wound up with the

10:29

seats. Are you think. A

10:31

grabs career might have been differently had he

10:33

went to Kowalski school Instead of the seats.

10:36

Will probably be running the Debbie Debbie right

10:38

now feed gonna glossy school. I was hoping

10:40

you'd say that. I'm

10:42

so it is a different

10:44

era. Ever heard of. Some

10:47

of the training methods that the See would do

10:49

have enough Think most people listening this are familiar

10:51

with the see Him if you're not. When I'm

10:53

talking about the Iron C E O X they

10:56

have a pretty good impression of right. To

10:59

be maybe has been John

11:01

back. fuck you it as

11:03

add some booze you can

11:05

eat a baby. Of

11:08

God I love he does. Did the day

11:10

are the all the into? Ah I'm. Sorry.

11:13

Sorry you had Always the my favorite.

11:16

He them are twelve matches

11:18

and nineteen ninety. But. He

11:20

says that you know realistically, None.

11:23

Of the stuff that we know robin

11:25

them for was taught to him by

11:27

the seats. The. See saw

11:29

him out entire powerful on a

11:31

headlock. The really basic stuff. The.

11:34

Rob knew early on man he wanted

11:36

to do the high risk stuff behalf

11:38

I and stuff. Must. Not like

11:40

the seat states in fucking five star

11:42

Fox classes, right? Seattle,

11:46

David the seat there were got

11:48

up and off the top rope.

11:50

Too much his career and there's

11:52

a reason for that. he didn't

11:54

have to and the sequels major

11:56

Attraction. But the important thing that

11:58

the seek taught wrong n Sabu

12:00

was the fundamentals. Any taught him

12:03

how to protect himself in the

12:05

rain and. Made. Sure, he knew

12:07

what the hell he was doing. In the ranks of

12:09

people can see through what he was doing. So.

12:12

Viscerally, he has both in the U

12:14

S W A. In this happens because

12:16

the seek has relationship with Jerry Lawler

12:18

and this is when things start to

12:20

happen for Rob. Or the

12:22

see kid named him the Polish

12:24

France and the also wrestled as

12:26

you robbie see Rob that a

12:28

few other silly names and then

12:31

one day he meets a promoter

12:33

from Florida, Mr. Wrong Slinker and

12:35

Ron Slickers. There was a son

12:37

in law tax last year who

12:39

we know as Median or Phineas.

12:41

And. You have any Iran Slinker story you can.

12:44

She was almost a forgotten name from wrestling.

12:46

Is a matter of fact

12:48

I do because Rawnsley thirteen

12:50

through the Houston territories way

12:53

back when in the seventies

12:55

and. Tom. And I

12:57

both been in karate. that was Roms gimmicks.

12:59

He was a karate guys so we would

13:01

go back and talk to Iran about karate

13:03

and about wrestling and he would always be

13:06

nice to us and talk to us. But

13:08

many years later. When we

13:10

got into the business were actually working

13:12

with gonna meet up with wrong from

13:14

time to time he were always laugh

13:16

about those two kids. From. Houston,

13:19

Texas. The karate kid that ended

13:21

up making the wrestling business runs

13:23

always you know, really nice to

13:25

us and he was a nice

13:27

guy. Like said, he was the

13:29

step father of one and only

13:31

medium. That. Would be

13:33

Phineas Darwin. So.

13:36

Ryan actually gives him the name Rob

13:38

Van Dam because he looks a lot

13:40

like Jean Claude Van Damme and I

13:42

feel like a lot of our younger

13:44

listeners may not know how big of

13:47

a fucking deal was on Claude Van

13:49

Damme and early nineties. Jean Claude Van

13:51

Damme was Shut Norris probably before Chuck

13:53

Norris. I think that if you were

13:55

to ask people back in the day

13:57

who was going to be the star.

14:00

Are and who would be the one

14:02

with the longevity and Hollywood people would

14:04

have chosen. Rob. Amina is on Claude

14:07

Van Damme over even Chuck Norris so

14:09

he was a mega star. He was

14:11

on the same skill same level as

14:13

Sylvester Stallone. You know when people looked

14:16

at action heroes in the he was

14:18

the she isn't it. Ah,

14:22

I'm at this point. I think a

14:24

lot of our listeners are promising mass.

14:26

Rob gets an opportunity to wrestle Little Bear

14:29

for W w as Robbie the In. This

14:31

happens because Ryan is friends with Bill was

14:33

is running devotees of you at the time.

14:36

And. So Rob actually. I

14:39

get an opportunity here. To

14:41

do some enhancement matches against Pat

14:43

Rose friends the show from Chattanooga

14:45

think he has efficiency own and

14:47

set the hurt. Or. On has

14:49

swallows off the hook. It's a hook

14:51

fucking fishing show. Their my a a

14:53

Pet Pet likes to fast. Pat.

14:56

Likes to fish. Pit. Likes to

14:58

pass yeah as closely that I like.

15:00

Like fresh paint A felt. Exactly

15:03

what's going on with your your on the

15:05

second immense. I did.

15:07

I did. I took them early. do they?

15:09

Maybe that's what's going on? There's was interesting

15:11

to me when Rob get services of you.

15:14

Know. What says I wanted Easily

15:16

Van Dam. And. Rob.

15:19

Think that's are weird and says

15:21

wanna see him He says I

15:23

wanted to be confused with someone

15:25

else. I. Thought that's hilarious because

15:27

that's what everything and wrestling is about

15:30

as trying that. When. How many

15:32

fucking nature boys were there like? That's what

15:34

she do fit their i know. Yeah,

15:37

but at the say is the same time

15:39

you you wanna be the one that everybody

15:41

else is copying, right? You know one copy

15:43

of by you want to be the innovator.

15:45

You want to be the one they create

15:48

something that everybody else wants to imitate, not

15:50

be imitating someone's I agree with that last

15:52

me. When. I'm too terribly long after

15:54

robbers and of his interview only Anderson

15:56

takes over because Watts as out. And.

15:59

Always listen the the same thing that mail

16:01

they had. So. Rob winds up

16:03

not signing a contract and just being able

16:05

to leave is working on a sort of

16:07

nightly deal. And. He decides I have

16:09

found his the independence any sort of

16:11

sharpens the skills a little bit. He.

16:14

Only had a run into pieces of he

16:16

from like December of Ninety Two to may

16:18

have Ninety Three. And apparently my

16:20

graham was the guy who would always

16:22

push him to sign. But.

16:25

Rob would say things like Africa I added a

16:27

home. I'll bring it. And. I feel

16:29

like robbers problems playing a game they are just

16:31

because he knew a especially at that time. Man.

16:34

Mills's down if you're human guinea and in

16:36

a beginning with areas of yeah, Fda me

16:39

at log mail here right? I

16:41

think. Also just smooth change over in

16:44

Booker's from wants to only It's a

16:46

completely different philosophy. And. Both

16:49

of those guys are old time

16:51

guys but only for sure. Wasn't

16:53

a big fan of the the

16:55

pretty boy good lookin guess. In

16:59

Rob at a different look. You know he didn't

17:01

look like that. Wrestler type

17:03

and only really would have liked

17:05

to have a crowd. You compare

17:07

Booker? Why? Tamil Watson the book

17:09

or like only Anderson? Will.

17:12

Both guys are pretty similar in

17:14

that they're both old school guys

17:17

and they are. In. Favor of

17:19

the wrestling, the not really big on

17:21

gimmicks and not really big on high

17:23

flying and they. Both. Favor

17:26

seat over. Making

17:29

the audience happy. You know those lot

17:31

of the old school guys, it was

17:33

all about getting he in leaving he

17:35

billie up to the one big match

17:37

for the baby face to get the

17:39

blow off. but everything building up to

17:41

an all your Tv was all about.

17:43

He and Watson only were all like

17:45

in that way but I do is.

17:47

As much as it pains me to

17:49

say this bill was probably a lot

17:51

more open. To. New Ideas

17:54

and Build did see the

17:56

value of youths. And he

17:58

saw the value of of young. Talent

18:00

to draw, A. Younger crowd.

18:04

Only didn't know he fell to

18:06

the know you you want, the

18:08

older crowd, the steadfast grab. His.

18:12

Work as an independent and runs in

18:14

a Brady Moon who suggests that Robs

18:16

saw would work great in Japan. Sobriety

18:18

make the call. And a visually

18:20

Rob gets a shot to do a tour

18:22

with all Japan and he was a parking

18:24

there from ninety three to Ninety seven. Of

18:26

course he's working some shots here in the

18:28

States especially for easy now view. But.

18:31

Rob would probably say that he really put everything

18:33

together with the Rob Van Damme character and sort

18:35

of honed his style. is Rob and am that

18:37

we know. While. He was in Japan.

18:41

What do you think of? a gas

18:43

or I'm in. This feels like almost

18:45

like the All Warriors code from incinerate

18:47

centuries ago. Were really? if

18:49

you're gonna sorta. Become. A bad

18:52

ass. you have to go to another way

18:54

and a faraway land and then come back.

18:57

What? Do you think of gas? Go to Japan and

18:59

really sort of put it all together. Whether it's. Prob.

19:01

And Am or Aj styles are an

19:04

easy styles is the most recent example

19:06

where. He. Working with the In

19:08

a really not serious answers from Derry

19:10

of Eve from a financial standpoint. He.

19:12

Goes over talkers Japan and comes back for

19:14

big money. Now is the tippy top gonna

19:17

impale? allows them that opportunity to the not.

19:20

It doesn't do it allows guys

19:22

may be with not the biggest

19:24

personalities. And. Then

19:27

aren't that flamboyant here in the states

19:29

and are unable get over to go

19:32

get over with their in read in

19:34

reading skills in Japan because they don't

19:36

speak the language they don't have to.

19:38

However, if they can tell a story

19:40

in they can perform in between bell

19:42

time then they're going to do very

19:45

well in Japan. So it's a different

19:47

style is a completely different philosophy. For.

19:50

A guy like Rob Van Damme who

19:52

didn't have the biggest personality per se

19:54

especially is this time when he's young

19:56

in the business and he still developing.

19:58

It's a great the time to go

20:00

and learn. As. J are

20:02

you say you go while our new home. This.

20:05

Was love to robbed go learn

20:07

a different style into grow in

20:10

just get experience in the business.

20:12

And. A feeling it's worth mentioning. hear the Kenny

20:15

Omega The most recent example of this. at least

20:17

the Me. Here here's a guy

20:19

who wb didn't see it on in a

20:21

developmental. The Us to Japan and proves

20:23

that the slam but the whole fucking world wrong

20:25

and arguably one of the best wrestlers in the

20:28

world, if at the very best wrestler and world.

20:30

But. It all happen through the in ring work exactly

20:32

like you're saying. And ebooks. You know

20:34

what? years? Funny. I'm going to go off on

20:37

Kenny Omega tirade here for a second. I.

20:40

Saw some early Kenny Omega south that

20:43

he did did he produced himself the

20:45

it was complete ha ha. in to

20:47

complete bullshit and I found it some

20:50

of the most entertaining South I've ever

20:52

seen in my life and that when

20:54

I saw the old stuff and Omega

20:56

just goofing around and it was a

20:59

a thing on a boat in or

21:01

any in and out of my house

21:03

I went Wow! This. Guy's

21:05

got personality and I had our watch

21:08

the the Bullet Club stuff with the

21:10

young bucks into the Omega and Cody.

21:12

Highly entertaining. So for people when I

21:14

hear that will Kenny Omega didn't have

21:17

a whole lot of personality that submit

21:19

as shit load of personality. And

21:21

I think that he would do really well

21:24

here in the states much. it was his

21:26

ring work and it was him getting over

21:28

somewhere else to got everybody's attention over here.

21:32

But eventually ah robbers

21:34

in Japan and a

21:36

sorcerer realize that. You

21:39

gotta fucking take these dates For real.

21:42

Hand He learned very quickly

21:44

that. The. Sort of

21:46

softer American style. Was. Not

21:49

resonating with the crowd or

21:51

the boys. And so they

21:53

had the really start taking the shit out of

21:55

each other and that goes back to the see

21:57

who taught him to be Steph. But.

21:59

It's and. The level. In. Japan. Sometimes

22:01

they go back to like cool water and

22:04

godlike there who would just take the fuck

22:06

out of each other a sort of smartness

22:08

up. Why is that a mean our sort

22:10

of thought. The gimmick with wrestling is a

22:13

supposed to look like it hurts but then

22:15

it doesn't. But. Then over there.

22:17

They. See that and forth everywhere. I mean,

22:19

Ayman One Fifteen years ago, Loki was

22:22

taken the shit out of Daves. Yeah,

22:25

don't get it. I was brought up in

22:27

in a different way. I was brought up

22:29

the old to work and not to hurt

22:32

your opponent and toward lively and take care

22:34

of your opponent. However times change in I

22:36

think that. In. The United States

22:38

were found on the last ones to

22:40

adopt it but when you have competition

22:42

with us see what as born out

22:44

there beat the shit out of each

22:47

other? That's which a competition is and

22:49

you have to make it look at

22:51

the best you can when you would

22:53

go to Japan or you'd go to

22:55

Auto Mom's in Germany a lot of

22:57

times the foreign talent coming in to

22:59

their country they would be tested. Let's

23:01

see how tough they are. let's see

23:03

if they can taste it and they

23:05

would put him in the rain. And

23:08

beat the shit out of I'm to see.

23:10

If. They're gonna come back see if they're

23:12

going to actually fight back in that would

23:14

tell them in japan will kind of character

23:17

they have. well you know this guy's got

23:19

it. He stop is knocking taking shit from

23:21

anybody. And. As get helps get

23:23

you over with the office and with

23:25

boys and. Them. With are

23:27

out. Of. Course he befriends

23:29

Seibu and Seven trying to get him

23:31

in a seed of he surrounds any

23:33

wary of Ninety Six said lose really

23:36

trying oppressor Paul Heyman to bring and

23:38

rob. And every week when they see

23:40

each other he says that paul call you. And.

23:42

Robs as know he has not promised the time

23:44

was so work in Japan of course front of

23:47

some shots in the Carolinas and do well for

23:49

himself. And when the Paul Paul

23:51

Heyman call file with happens. As.

23:53

I ever going to give you a fee hundred bucks to come in

23:55

and pull over my you were prick. And Rob doesn't

23:57

want to do that. So. One

24:00

a book and angle for him and stare

24:02

just to appease. Abu. But. Paul

24:04

wants to take a look at him so puts

24:06

them in the ring with acts are rotten and

24:08

this is his first time wrestling in front of

24:10

the scene of the arena. And that's

24:12

a bloodthirsty Krauss and Robin messy Never

24:14

seen anything like that and his entire

24:17

career up to that point. Bruce.

24:19

I know you just saw the scene of your enough.

24:22

Or yes, last year when we took a

24:24

tour. Bus. You were never there

24:26

when there was a crowd there when you

24:28

watched the tapes of that's. What's

24:31

the a me to compare to any other

24:33

arena crowd in history? Know.

24:37

We'll that that Philadelphia crowd that

24:39

he C W crowds. They were

24:41

neighbors tacit. You know they knew

24:43

what they wanted. They had their

24:45

own chance and it was a

24:47

cold like following so that came

24:49

across on air and that's something

24:51

the Paul played into in the

24:53

audience. Loved it! So. It's here

24:55

in his first run of he sees of your

24:57

he starts to do this double fum point gimmicks.

25:00

And originally starts from just a double

25:02

bicep and then out of enthusiasm and

25:04

excitement. He. Does it as sort of a

25:06

heel kind? As starts to get over.

25:09

And. He doesn't really

25:11

know how over it is until they're on

25:13

the bus a Japan and they pass a

25:15

group of fans and they're all doing the

25:17

double fum posts and him. It's

25:19

one of those little things that really helps

25:22

you get over a mean Daniel Bryan with

25:24

the yes have these days is the perfect

25:26

example that as a my. Absolutely

25:28

and is usually happy. Accidents Systems that

25:31

weren't the best, litter, organic and is

25:33

he doing your Os and three sixteen

25:35

is all of those are great examples

25:38

of something that in the spur of

25:40

the moment you do it and it

25:42

works in and catches on. One.

25:45

Of the more I guess our comic

25:47

things that robbers doing at the time

25:49

was finishing move. With. Any

25:51

see their views on everything. Goes.

25:54

The. Van Dam or later And to remind you if

25:56

you haven't seen this are you know for it's called

25:58

Van Dam and and or is he. The fear

26:00

you and to keep her from hitting you in

26:02

the face, you catch it. And then

26:04

he immediately takes it in your fucking face.

26:07

Bruce was you think of them and them and eight or

26:09

the first time he saw it. Hated it

26:11

for some assad's alla thought it was dangerous

26:13

but then yo after awhile you you watch

26:15

new okay well the guy that got the

26:18

chair, he's pretty much controlling it so after

26:20

a while i yeah I watch it and

26:22

oh okay that's pretty damn calls matter fact

26:24

but it's hard. you know you can't do

26:26

that anywhere else but he c w really.

26:30

Of. Course Rob was involved in this

26:32

easy W W W F cross pollination

26:34

project The House are doing and Ninety

26:36

Seven. And he even appears

26:38

on Are All Wrestling A very

26:40

young Jeff Hardy. And. Ravi.

26:42

It's the when and was most

26:44

effectively squash match. And.

26:47

Around the same time he was having

26:49

some problems and easy wt felt like

26:51

he had been slighted and not now

26:53

showcase than off. Odd to

26:55

the point that he wasn't even originally

26:57

scheduled to compete on Barely Legal. But.

26:59

Chris Candido was injured. And

27:01

so all the sudden. Robin. Damn

27:04

had an opportunity. To.

27:06

Fill in and a dub himself

27:08

Mr. Monday night and really get

27:10

over with the crowd. When.

27:12

He's as first saw Rob and them in

27:14

every of yeah. Working with Jeff Hardy is

27:16

you imagine that there was something there? Did

27:19

you know that Rob has yet? or did

27:21

you first realized maybe we can do something

27:23

with him? People are into him or he

27:25

has something. To say

27:27

the first time that I saw

27:29

Rob Van Dam was actually with

27:32

Story Phone Junior long before he

27:34

was. Even. Any see Derby

27:36

right about the time that he was

27:38

going to Wc: Wu Gan Robin Damn

27:40

does the Van Damme split where he

27:43

takes two chairs or the Van Damme

27:45

dad lived in takes to tears and

27:47

does splits and then miss a barbell

27:50

in between. Extremely.

27:52

Difficult to do and extremely impressive when

27:54

you see somebody do it. And I'd

27:56

seen Rob and always thought you know.

27:59

If. He had a you the love

28:01

any just had a different style. So

28:03

watching Rob from day one thought that

28:05

he was special and thought he was

28:07

somebody that could come into the debris

28:10

debbie and have a. Big.

28:12

Mids following. So.

28:15

Of course this story as a little

28:17

bit of a feared lawless calling a

28:20

see the of you. In a

28:22

low budget. Wannabes,

28:24

No tail and blah blah blah. Ah,

28:27

I'm. Rob starts

28:29

to sort of dub himself

28:31

Mr. Monday Night. And

28:33

Lawler saying he's gonna have some other take

28:36

care that. Jon. Bon Jovi

28:38

wannabe. And. This is sort

28:40

of early easy w W of F

28:42

stuff bias as great memories of this

28:44

maybe aside my fandom and Ninety Seven.

28:47

Looking back. What? Are your

28:49

memories of this? Easy

28:51

W W W F stuff from

28:54

Ninety Seven, at least from a

28:56

robin damn perspective. Well, he was.

28:58

Rob Van Dam was probably. The

29:01

star that we wanted the most. And

29:04

he was somebody that we felt that

29:06

we could bring in in actually to

29:08

capitalize on. So Van Dam was somebody

29:10

we were interested in, that that. Is.

29:13

Attractive. And yet terrifying to

29:16

Paul Heyman Because Paul it the same

29:18

time is now realizing oh shit that

29:20

we'd have eased look in a Van

29:22

Dam. I want to lose him. and

29:24

if they're interested in him, then yeah,

29:26

I've got something here. and Paul like

29:28

to have that control and Paul like

29:30

to manipulate the Talon into thinking that

29:32

he was the only one that could

29:34

guide their career Form. And

29:37

he really did that pretty masterfully. Allegedly

29:39

robbed fella. He had an opportunity to

29:41

do something with piss off. And.

29:43

Paul apparently convinced him that. Know.

29:46

You really? yeah To leverage that the Oh

29:48

Bob hearing on Monday Night Raw and Will

29:50

Make Them was even more. He can call

29:52

yourself mister Monday Night We never know you're

29:54

in a show up. It'll be great. Your

29:56

character. But. Then when he actually

29:59

goes to work. There we w f on

30:01

some of these shots while he still under an

30:03

easy Debbie contract. Paul. Selling and

30:05

stuff like they don't want to hear. so

30:07

watch your bags. Not. Leave him where

30:09

anybody he gets home they're going to sit near bags

30:11

or cats are close up. And when he

30:13

really had the got started drinking the kool aid to

30:16

be not. Ah, Yes,

30:20

And and it wasn't even like

30:22

it was hidden there were there

30:24

was Paul taking now man. Going

30:26

to the corner and you literally

30:28

see Paul looking over his shoulder

30:30

to see if anybody's. Watching

30:32

them are trying to eavesdrop on.

30:34

I'm. But. That's

30:36

how Paul. Guys. Do what

30:38

he wanted to do. You know Paul continually

30:40

fit in. To. Their ego

30:43

Paul continually told him what he

30:45

thought they wanted to hear and

30:47

was continually eats feeding this us

30:49

against them mentality. Even

30:51

then, And that's what he needed

30:53

to do to get that loyalty for the

30:55

Cw locker room. Robbie. It's an

30:57

opportunity to work some Saigon Saturday night masses.

30:59

To me with Lawler you for headbangers and

31:02

then on are all. He's also getting opportunity

31:04

to wrestle the all to call Scorpio flash

31:06

phone here in the dairy to be. As

31:09

tables involved in rock is the when. And.

31:12

Then as a tag team title tournament the

31:14

next week and the head bangers actually be

31:16

Rob Van Dam and Lawler. And. In

31:19

hindsight, Rob probably didn't like teeming with

31:21

Lawler doesn't really make a lot of

31:23

sense. What's. The Thinking Here

31:25

and putting Rob Van Damme on the same

31:27

thing with stereo. Speakers. Law

31:29

was so anti U C W

31:31

and Rob was easy dubuque So

31:33

it was Rob was gonna be

31:35

presented as almost. The

31:38

is better than that. Yeah,

31:40

yeah, exactly. So that was the reasoning

31:42

for it. Was the Oh Lawler taken

31:45

the guy that he's gonna now mold

31:47

into the Derby? Debbie? One.

31:49

Of the assets Rob had interaction with are in

31:51

his early run here that there will be asked

31:54

his own heart. He looked up though and heart

31:56

because of all the hof on moves in one

31:58

night. And. Oh. Really put

32:00

overall been a big way and survey Knoxville.

32:02

Five matches from Just Watch and money years.

32:05

Ah I thought was pretty cool that

32:07

so many guys especially from this era.

32:10

Really? Have such respect for Allen Says a lot

32:12

of auto and as a performer and as a man,

32:14

right? Oh was a great

32:17

performer. Known was an innovator long

32:19

before he came in to the

32:21

Ww Ii. I remember back in

32:23

one thing was Wrestlemania five I

32:25

guess but. Oh and

32:27

hard. On. These in Germany

32:29

and swell Germany and Japan

32:32

people were talking about. owns

32:34

moves then been things that

32:36

they had never ever seen

32:38

before. So own heart to

32:40

the boys. Especially. Young

32:42

talent they looked at all and and

32:44

own always strive to be different in

32:47

the innovate vs imitate. One.

32:49

Of the things that happened pretty early in

32:51

the run as Paul Heyman is constantly saying

32:53

if you're a thoughtful with anything to say

32:55

the word and will go. Sort

32:58

of insinuating Rob didn't have to do anything.

33:00

That is more to for the there is

33:02

a bf. And. Rob felt like

33:05

he was his mission to sort help in he sees

33:07

of he over in one of the early. Matches

33:09

there were proposed were that The

33:11

Road Dogg Jesse James would go

33:13

over Rob Damn. And

33:15

this a different time of course and Rob

33:18

said something like i afford the for new

33:20

and jobs here. How. Does this help

33:22

the company? And poly said

33:24

i if you honestly believe so they decide

33:26

to leave. But the go Talk to Vince

33:28

Mcmahon first and that's the first time Vince

33:31

mates Rob. Advent says something

33:33

to the effect of. A

33:35

plan on staying here that every of yeah or else

33:37

I wouldn't put your face on t. And

33:40

I see you as a babyface. The.

33:42

Remember this first meeting with Vance and

33:44

Robin? Them. Sure I do

33:47

because Paul's stern everything up and Paul was

33:49

trying to get these guys are other day.

33:51

It wasn't that the boys didn't wanna do

33:53

a job was Paul didn't want them to

33:55

do a job and it was Paul feeling

33:57

that if they did a job on our

33:59

Tv. That that would hurt w

34:01

some R E C W. The.

34:04

Fact that we're putting them on Tv and

34:06

doing something with them. Held C C

34:08

W by the exposure alone and there were

34:10

stories to it and has been said I

34:12

wouldn't put on T V if I didn't

34:14

have plans for you want to do something

34:16

with you. Are. In

34:18

of the things I have, er ed Murray

34:20

sorry that sort of how hard to believe.

34:23

Is. Yes, we're actually planning said take this

34:25

easy now view that we have yes stuff

34:27

a step further. Allegedly. According

34:30

to the rumor and innuendo and summer

34:32

Slam, Ninety Ninety Seven. A. Rob

34:34

Van Dam and Sabot tag team

34:36

was proposed. The takes on Tommy

34:38

Dreamer and Sandman. Sri at

34:41

Summer Slam Ninety seven. Now.

34:43

Obviously that didn't happen. But

34:45

according to the lead into didn't happen

34:48

because Rob. Sort. Of

34:50

didn't wanna do the job for Jesse

34:52

James and Plan Sainz. As they say

34:54

in that relationship sort of falls apart.

34:56

Why? Did the relationship sort of from

34:58

afar at the seams And ninety seven

35:00

with he sees every from an on

35:03

air standpoint. For. That reason the

35:05

that? Paul? Ya think? Paul got people so

35:07

stirred up there. you know they didn't want

35:09

do jobs and they didn't wanna. It's fine

35:11

telling a story as long as I win.

35:15

Or lose on one. tell the story anymore. I want

35:17

to be on your Tv as long as I win

35:19

And that just doesn't work because. Still,

35:21

Story Yeah, winners and

35:24

losers man. That's.

35:26

Why fell apart in if there was gonna be a debate

35:28

over that every single time in sin one deal with it.

35:31

So. Does your have a conversation with anybody

35:33

about a proposed the scene of you massive summer

35:35

slam on a seven? Or they're just the. Of

35:38

a bullshit, they'll. Buy. Things

35:41

as his people talk in insane saw a

35:43

Yelp is probably day meltzer sitting there got

35:45

i know what they're gonna do Didn't have

35:47

a tag team match but that was never

35:49

on the books and I was was something.

35:51

If anything we would have had a C

35:54

W Guys against Abu Dhabi guys. He

35:57

was of thing and easy to have you

35:59

as an incredible run. Rothys in every title

36:01

for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds the days.

36:04

I mean, over a year, well over a year

36:06

and wins the tag titles a couple of times

36:08

with Seibu. And. Then eventually in

36:11

late two thousand, Rob is looking

36:13

for somewhere to land because the

36:15

checks are feminine. And. He

36:17

feels like the law reads hear the bigger hole

36:19

is gonna be dog. He. Still getting

36:21

as guarantee but he's not getting paper

36:23

view bonuses, is not getting merchandise payments.

36:26

So. He's looking to jump off of

36:28

a sinking ship. But. It does make

36:30

one last appearance at the last. Pay For

36:32

View January Seventh. Two Thousand and One Way

36:35

be Juri Land! And allegedly he

36:37

wanted to guarantee that was twice as much

36:39

as had been paid before. And.

36:42

And. Had to make cash. Paul agreed to

36:44

do it. Though. And Rob got there and

36:46

ask for it. Paul. Said i don't

36:49

think he meant cast has. Averaged.

36:51

As he surfs Gimme Gimme Benjamin's

36:53

oh sir I feel the to

36:55

or six if I could have

36:57

another violently why thought you meant

37:00

my was I would you be

37:02

one of these pieces of paper

37:04

with a dollar amount on it?

37:06

Take to your bags. They.

37:08

May not be a little it right away but

37:10

you will save it for devils. Your guarantee serve.

37:15

Probably. The biggest ally of Robs easy

37:17

to have you career is winning the

37:19

television title from Bam Bam Bigelow and

37:21

I think that happened. And Ninety Eight.

37:23

As. A pretty iconic moment there when he class to

37:26

the top rope and then jumped from the top of

37:28

the ring out to the floor. By. On

37:30

the other side of the guard rail and

37:32

flips over the you remember seeing anything of

37:34

Rob Ryan in Easy Though he before he

37:37

came up and thinking fuck we are Get

37:39

this gas. At this

37:41

was his believe it or not, I

37:43

was always a fan of Robs because

37:45

of his lot. And

37:47

he was different. His work was

37:49

different. He didn't work like every

37:51

other guy I wasn't as big

37:53

of a fan of is hard

37:56

core stuff and a lot of

37:58

that. But. I was more

38:00

I'm a fan of of his

38:02

uniqueness. Of

38:05

talk about. When. It's all

38:07

over. When. His you guys.

38:10

Want to get in business with Rob Van

38:12

Dam and why didn't happen sooner? Well,

38:15

I've got a warrant again. business Who

38:18

broadband damn all the way back to

38:20

nineteen Ninety Seven. I remember somewhere in

38:22

there between like Ninety Eight and two

38:25

thousand. Been. At a show

38:27

with the Galaxy Theater in

38:29

California now outside of Los

38:32

Angeles for U P W

38:34

show and. We.

38:36

Were up in a box and everything and

38:38

somebody came down and said hey Rob and

38:41

amps Rob was in a box on the

38:43

completely other side. I suck his head and

38:45

said hello and I went down and talk

38:47

to him and handed in my car and

38:50

said you know that whenever you're ready to

38:52

make a move I'm sure would appreciate you

38:54

give me a call He said of course

38:56

you'll love to Man goes on of good

38:58

right now. But. I'm

39:01

always been a fan of Robson also

39:03

he be good fit with Debbie to

39:05

be. So.

39:07

Allegedly. A

39:09

decides hey, if he can't beat em, join em

39:12

and by he I mean Paul Heyman. He shows

39:14

up and us commentary on Raw. And

39:16

a lot of the boys that now that this

39:18

was the in the and. And. The

39:20

Now Paul had when or for the big

39:23

bad empire that probably had the make a

39:25

lot of guys. Who. Had been hearing

39:27

the sermons for years and years of our how.

39:29

You. Want to go there? They don't know

39:32

what to do with you elo the

39:34

speak corporate monster. It's not real wrestling.

39:36

And. They won't let you be. You forgive

39:38

me a prisoner. And. Now

39:40

he's on T V. A lot of the

39:42

guys probably feels a certain type away about

39:44

that. The the not. Yeah.

39:48

Because Hoffman's then. You know

39:50

they're They're fearless leader. Is.

39:54

On. W W E T V

39:56

extolling the virtues of the W

39:58

40:01

Everything that he had breached them Not

40:03

ever to do because you have to

40:05

believe in your brand and you have

40:07

to be able to sell easy W

40:09

E C W stories. The only thing

40:11

that matters and we will not sell

40:13

out to the corporate bigwigs. And

40:16

they hadn't even shut the doors and polls on

40:18

our Tv. So.

40:21

Nothing there are a lot of. There was a

40:23

lot of buzzes. Tenorio, What fuck. So.

40:26

Rob. Decides okay Paul's they're on a the

40:29

call and see if he can help me

40:31

get an. Pulses. That's great.

40:33

I'll call they aren't call your I back

40:35

and we call them back he says. He.

40:38

Got a medium at the L A X

40:40

Mary. Odd because they think you have a

40:42

reputation for being hard to get along well.

40:45

And that probably goes back to him

40:47

refusing to do a job for Jesse

40:49

James and Ninety Seven Fibers. I'm not

40:51

really privy to the conversation The Ball

40:53

Jr had. However, I would say that

40:56

Rob was painted with that bras. From.

40:59

Back in the that time with the

41:01

Jeff Hardy incident. And people did

41:03

they been okay. Well you know why

41:05

it was Rob it was Sambo was

41:07

paul. And they were difficult to

41:09

deal with that time. So. Most.

41:13

Felt. That it was probably Paul stirring

41:15

that pot it the same time. If you've

41:17

gotta be able to look Rob in the

41:20

eye and say what do you want to

41:22

do you want do business in in work

41:24

with us and probably Jr was out no

41:26

way and it was a good opportunity because

41:28

that's a Rob lived. Together

41:31

and talk and I can see Jr say why

41:33

are they don't from a minor. Injuries

41:36

were no or hammers he

41:38

see Derbys Nan against. And

41:40

I can see Paul Kennedy you know

41:43

sit in that they're you know the

41:45

to say you know robbed they put

41:47

down robs mind to. Pass.

I'm signing a three year contract but is a

43:45

little concerned about what they're going to do with

43:47

a million. Changed his name for a new character.

43:50

whenever. That happens and said he debuted

43:52

on July ninth. Two Thousand One. And.

43:54

This is the famous Invasion angle.

43:57

Against. They are tommy dreamer so there and

43:59

throws in the. The Navy shirt and

44:01

thera. The. Representing easy their view

44:03

and the alliance was born. With.

44:06

Any other ideas kicked around for bring

44:08

In and robbers? Maybe a different character

44:10

or a different name or how was

44:12

he to use this? The way was

44:15

no. Timing was right time, he was

44:17

right. Because of the invasion we realize

44:19

that we needed. For

44:21

us, all we need the easy W

44:24

guys. We needed more people with name

44:26

recognition. We didn't get that from Wc

44:28

Wu. the the big names were still

44:30

under their A O L Time Warner

44:33

contract. Rob and ambien

44:35

available. To. Us that was

44:37

the biggest Easy W name that

44:39

was available out there. So keepers

44:41

name keepers persona and painting with

44:43

that he C W brush that

44:45

we were trying to paint. So.

44:48

Now we want to bring and rob and am. Now.

44:52

Of course the Cw locker room with

44:54

a lot different than the Wtf. Backstage.

44:57

Area The whole situation. And.

44:59

Rob admits that he never really got

45:01

used to the way Easy dove you.

45:03

Compared to the Derrida Bf, he was

45:05

ever really comfortable with the Wwf because

45:07

a lot of times. They've. Got a

45:09

call tom of like one o'clock. In

45:12

the showed us a nice ago in the air until

45:14

eight. Seem. Like this whole day

45:16

here and that was really not the way.

45:19

It happened in Ac. they'll be whoa. What are

45:21

you think of the other big difference between the

45:23

locker rooms? Sprawling

45:25

on haven't a piss in a bucket?

45:27

Ah, I'm. Structure.

45:31

Of. People have to be responsible for

45:33

their actions as a lot. I mean

45:35

the. The. Rumor and

45:37

and that strictly going on. Rumor innuendo. The

45:39

person in the bucket of some I did

45:42

witness of my one and only C W

45:44

show that I ever went to. but it

45:46

was. Completely. Different

45:48

there there was structure to it and you

45:51

you had to be on time. He had

45:53

to do certain things were certain things were

45:55

expected of you and you know it's funny

45:57

with you are going to get their one

45:59

o'clock. The have to get their one

46:01

o'clock is there's a lot of other things

46:03

that are going on besides your one match.

46:06

the.com I need your production may need you. There's

46:09

pretends to be done. There's a lot of things

46:11

that need to get done throughout the day. And.

46:14

If you're searching for people are having

46:16

to adjust the schedule for one person

46:18

or two people. it makes it difficult

46:20

to. You've got a lot of production

46:22

stuff to do and we need everybody

46:24

there on time. So

46:26

let's talk about his early run here

46:28

because he's on his a loss of

46:30

a thing smackdown teaming up with Billy

46:33

Kidman to defeat X Box and Jeff

46:35

Hardy. And a few days later, it's

46:37

the Invasion Pay per View in Cleveland. And

46:39

we have a barn burner Massa, Jeff Hardy

46:42

and he actually wins the Hard For title

46:44

see as or push them and featured him

46:46

right away. Tell me what

46:48

the feeling on Robbins when he comes in

46:50

and immediately Matt was a big purse and

46:52

a huge pay per view match with Jeff

46:54

Hardy. Was. Looking looking at

46:56

the group of talent coming in, here's

46:58

a younger looking guy with lot of

47:01

talent and Rob Van Dam and. Wanted.

47:04

To do something with and been slight

47:06

him and you see a let's start

47:09

of and let's introduce and our audience

47:11

and let's build him from there so

47:13

he was been says way of an

47:15

introduction and. See. What we've got from

47:17

here. So.

47:19

Let's talk about their match, The

47:21

Invasion pay per view. It's something

47:23

that. People. Still talk about to

47:26

this day. Would. Think of this

47:28

Robin and Jeff Hardy match here. Well,

47:30

I'm not a big fan of a

47:33

hardcore matches, but I think that when

47:35

you do it well and it is

47:37

something that you get that holy shit

47:39

moment in. They're both Jeff Hardy and

47:41

Rob Van Damme. They put everything on

47:43

the line. Every. Time they go

47:45

in the ring so it was too

47:47

young guys go out fighting to get

47:50

over and you felt it Any saw

47:52

any was pretty damn incredible. Gas me.

47:55

Is. It fair to say that the Hardcore title.

47:57

Was. Always sort of position this sort.

48:00

The. A joke. A

48:02

funny ha ha bell. except when

48:04

Rob had it. And. Felt like

48:06

when rob head as he was just work in a

48:08

C W matches he of the next are all.

48:10

He beat my hardy and hardcore matter

48:13

to me, sandwiched him inside of a

48:15

ladder, and then five star frogs blast

48:17

the ladder. And. Minutes and stuff he

48:19

would have done me. See the of you. And.

48:22

I feel like some of the other times

48:24

it was more funny ha ha. No

48:26

three was really funny ha Thankfully

48:28

was in God. We introduced with

48:31

Mick Foley and are all angle

48:33

with Stone Cold Steve Austin so

48:35

it was something. That.

48:37

Was different and it was a way

48:39

to be able to have those type

48:41

of matches and make those matches mean

48:43

something. If you're fighting for a championship

48:45

versus you salmon a hardcore match to

48:47

have a hard core match. He.

48:50

Works for on Philadelphia against the Jury

48:52

which is pretty cool. And. The

48:54

next day he's on. he. And he

48:56

beat Jerry Lynn. And. Juri lands

48:58

probably his most famous you know

49:01

opponent from the Cw days. They

49:03

have a series of incredible masses.

49:05

The. You ever see any of those my asus for me

49:07

see their view of cereal and and robin them what to

49:09

think of us. Was all lotta

49:11

love. I just saw a lot of

49:14

Jerry Lynn and Rob Van Dam and

49:16

Jerry Lynn is another one of those

49:18

guys. I go back to my days

49:20

Global Championship Wrestling was which was my

49:22

first exposure to Jerry Lynn. And.

49:25

He was in an issue with the

49:27

two three kid who was the Kamikaze

49:29

kids back in the day and I

49:31

sat there in all. Watching.

49:33

Jerry Lynn work. He was so

49:35

damn smooth, so damn good in

49:37

so believable the stuff that he

49:39

did with Rob. They had a

49:41

natural rivalry the had a natural

49:43

rhythm in the rain. And

49:46

you believed everything that they did in

49:48

the ring. So it it was good.

49:50

I dare say it was great and

49:52

I wish. The. Jerry Lynn.

49:55

Yeah, I wish there was a

49:57

place for Jerry Lynn. The.

50:00

They've either the debate, debate, performance Center

50:02

I think he's a great teacher and

50:04

into he was great age it but

50:06

I do think he's a great teacher

50:08

and teaching guys what to do and

50:10

I he's absolutely tremendous in the rain.

50:12

But the marriage and of Rob Van

50:14

Damme in Jerry Lynn just words mean

50:16

they they worked in perfect harmony. Size

50:20

Ascending hard for title on how

50:22

says the late July and mid August.

50:24

Working with guys like past Aids teen

50:26

Sephardi, then the Us to a no

50:29

contest for third angle on the Our

50:31

Thirteen Thrall And around this time he

50:33

starts to get a reputation for being

50:36

reckless. And happens with a

50:38

lot of the guys. start coming back,

50:40

the curtain busted open. Specifically.

50:42

On this mess with angle angles Lying on

50:44

the announce table. But. He was far

50:46

up enough. So. When rv be

50:48

like dropped him. As soon as

50:51

the table and the I busted open when

50:53

army has to the back he walked right

50:55

past fancy was in gorilla until Vance. Sorry.

50:58

I got your voice like that and Vince

51:00

said he'll learn to turn his head next

51:02

time. And after

51:04

that, Third, Wife Karen

51:06

posts online The Roof Simply back

51:09

to Ohio Valley Wrestling to learn

51:11

to work. Oh

51:14

man that's advisable. the right the remember

51:16

care and sort of being hands on.

51:18

With. Kurtz career like this sort of

51:21

vocal. His. Hair was

51:23

vocal about curse career and Care was

51:25

vocal bow what she thought so she

51:27

still is. Lesser. Large.

51:31

Okay, Cool. So early anything there was

51:34

talk of Will now I'm a huge

51:36

she was a that. That's that's all

51:38

there is. What skills far as Rabin

51:40

Rak List: As a that Robs Snug

51:42

says he was definitely snug in the

51:45

ranks. And guys you know did come

51:47

back and good good God man. but.

51:49

Here's the say. Anything that robbers

51:51

gonna give you Rob was willing to take.

51:54

Sophie. Gr he wants you to kick

51:56

him back card. Fair's.

51:59

Fair much. Yeah people didn't think he was

52:01

asked if a few years ago before off

52:03

com or for York City of San Blas

52:05

hanging out with Rick. But. Hours

52:07

before doors opened are all and everybody just

52:10

sitting around sort of bullshit and and market

52:12

are you saying In out. And one

52:14

of the young guys his press on the

52:16

main roster comes up these really excited that

52:18

he's. Here. Is gonna be on.

52:20

Romney's working with Rob Van Dam and he's

52:22

gone on to great success with their You

52:24

Be. And. Sell Marchionne are you?

52:26

Try to sorta give some advice, catch him up

52:28

and he says who York and with nine. And.

52:31

He says Rv day. And

52:33

Martini says all make your mother fucking

52:36

Hands up. Stargazing

52:41

by. A. Good.

52:44

Stuff. That's good advice man

52:46

gets get the damn is a. So.

52:51

Around this time Rob starts to believe

52:53

that the politics are sorted, driving him

52:55

knives and is ruining his wrestling experience

52:57

with the know your bf and and

52:59

so this is because his can say

53:01

are in one ear and Paul in

53:03

the other. A full lucky sort

53:05

of being pulled into different directions here

53:08

and given different advice from two different

53:10

guys. That. Seem like

53:12

a familiar situation with those two characters.

53:14

Paul Ncr. I could

53:16

definitely see it. absolutely because I can

53:18

see Paul going in and with ios

53:20

can like that. The devil on one

53:23

shoulder angel on the other shoulder. In

53:25

this case, I don't know which one's

53:27

the angel, which one's the devil. However,

53:29

I can definitely see Paul. Telling.

53:32

Me to help you guys your career serve

53:34

and you need to do this. And they

53:36

said that since this that the other thing

53:38

and then I can see Jr come in

53:40

on the other side let them know a

53:42

man you know. Wow Logan out you. they're

53:44

more your guts. Best interest in our. Own.

53:47

Keep it that so. Yeah.

53:49

I could see that happening with those two,

53:51

definitely, And in a poll specially. Of

53:55

instantly Rob loses the twenty

53:57

four Seven role. Is the.

54:00

The he loses the Hardcore title,

54:02

he's actually wrestling Kurt Angle. But.

54:04

Several people get involved and Jeff

54:06

Hardy actually comes away victorious. So.

54:08

In A Mass Yeah with current Angle Jeff Hardy

54:10

the Champion. Our Science for the

54:12

Summer Slam goes down August nineteenth two thousand

54:15

and one in San Jose Jose. Our read

54:17

the beating Jeff and a ladder match to

54:19

regain the Hard for title. And.

54:21

White Killer says they went sixteen minutes

54:23

and thirty three seconds. He gave it

54:26

three and a half stars. Are

54:28

those are pretty good Mass lots of

54:30

crazy bombs. They're pulling out all the

54:33

stops. Sunset flips off the top of

54:35

a ladder and other silliness. Wasn't.

54:37

Think of as much. I've. A

54:41

ladder match as a tables ladders

54:43

and shares matches cause it just

54:45

so damn dangerous. and then you

54:47

throw two guys like Rob Van

54:49

Damme, Jeff Hardy in the ring

54:51

on who are willing to push

54:53

those boundaries as far as they

54:55

possibly can. and I just hate

54:57

seeing guys get hurt. But. They.

55:00

Threw caution to the when and they went

55:02

out there and they kicked each other's asks.

55:04

They looked real. You know why? Because.

55:06

It was real and. Gas

55:10

and rob man they. Put.

55:13

Their bodies on the line out there and it

55:15

was a damn incredible matches One of those afterwards

55:17

you just want to go off to home and

55:19

hug humans. Are you okay? Well.

55:23

Though we're okay because I do a rematch

55:25

two days later on my gmail and is

55:27

pretty famous by hear. Them. As hands

55:29

when Rv these on the table outside of

55:32

the ring. Jeff qualms to the top of

55:34

a very tall either interested in a swan

55:36

time for Rob moves and Jeff crisis through

55:38

the table. Pretty. Memorable spot here

55:41

as a hell a thing to be doing today

55:43

that for ladder mass and summer slam as a

55:45

not. Absolutely. Because

55:47

they were already been up from

55:49

a ladder match in there are

55:51

ready to party in. So I

55:53

said putting them out there again

55:55

and putting them in that position.

55:57

but. Yeah. We did and. Yeah,

56:00

nobody blame but myself and.

56:03

Yeah, them busting their ass man

56:05

and they continued to wanna one

56:07

up their last performance every time

56:09

they went out there. So.

56:12

Let's talk a little bit about he I

56:14

guess in a something that were have to

56:17

talk about. Politics. And

56:19

the dairy of Iaf has always

56:21

been sort of Robs chief issue.

56:24

And. He's working a lot a house show

56:26

masses against Christie or Co. And he

56:28

says the chris was very political. And.

56:31

He felt like Jericho with sort of talk

56:33

down to him and cons sand. And

56:35

even not change finishes.

56:38

Talk. To me a little bit about. Their.

56:40

Interaction. With.

56:42

You know, was this just two guys who.

56:44

Felt. Like they are jockeying for position for

56:46

the same spot. Or. How would

56:49

you care for their relationship and first

56:51

year ago this time. He

56:53

I never knew that there was

56:55

a strained relationship between Christened Rob

56:57

and I think that you know

56:59

Chris Jericho is a pretty in

57:01

your face county guy and. He's

57:04

go tell you what he thinks and if

57:06

he's gonna go is gonna fight for his

57:08

spot and he's gonna fight for what he

57:10

thinks is right in. That may rub some

57:13

people the wrong way. Rob. Kind

57:15

of a laid back guy lotta times,

57:17

but same time. I think that Rob

57:19

carries a lot of it inside and

57:21

will let it, will let it boil

57:23

inside before bringing it out. But.

57:26

Same. Time he'll tell you what

57:28

he feels and I think Rob

57:30

was frustrated for a lot of

57:32

his run just in general. Because.

57:35

Rob. Can wants to goes own

57:37

way and and. Didn't. Like

57:39

being told what to do. And. When Jericho

57:41

try to change one of these

57:43

fantasies, he goes to Fear Family.

57:46

And has fit sort of back him up on it.

57:49

And when fear comes and tells Rob

57:51

he says ah fucking I'm scorn home.

57:54

Around this time disease start to feel like maybe

57:56

the wheels were running off for Rob when he

57:58

would start to say. this going on i

58:00

was is a different time with lost his don't

58:03

matter like be used to but. When.

58:05

A guy gets under your skin. He sort of

58:07

just don't want to do anything for that motherfucker

58:09

anymore, right? Well when it's

58:11

Somalis answer is yeah, want to go

58:13

home Which by the way, I don't

58:15

know that Rob ever said that. You

58:17

know to me like that or to

58:19

anybody else in a position really a

58:21

power, he may have felt that way.

58:24

And he may have said it other people. And

58:27

definitely there were times when I

58:29

know Rob was frustrated and frustrated

58:31

with me. In particular, I'm sure

58:34

we'll talk about that here in

58:36

this episode. but ah, I

58:39

don't remember him you ever threatening to go home

58:41

but if if he did that would be something and

58:43

if he made that know in the locker room

58:45

that got out and people probably would say okay why

58:47

we wasting time with him if he wants to go

58:49

home. He has

58:51

really started feature in know on September

58:53

fourth mag. Now he gets to win

58:55

over the World champion Stone Cold Steve

58:58

Austin. Clean. In the middle. And.

59:00

Have been a. Lot. Ways it's almost

59:02

like a very mass insert. The mega

59:04

Star Nice interview. I guess the

59:07

biggest star and every to be history and

59:09

Rob gets the when. Also thinking

59:11

here and putting rob over Stone Cold

59:13

and September. A

59:16

test the Santa see you know what that reaction

59:18

would be and see how people were going to

59:20

buy at. The chemistry also see

59:22

with the chemistry was receive an hour

59:24

B D. To. See what

59:26

we had? Their. So. Doled out

59:29

there and find out. A.

59:31

Almost felt like you guys were really running

59:33

a test to see. Good. We

59:35

sort of position him as may be like

59:37

a new later for the alliance and have

59:39

Austin and Van Dam sort of food was

59:41

that may be an idea of. In

59:43

or see how this goes. A. T

59:45

The. The.

59:48

Alliance stuff with Steve

59:50

and Rob to me.

59:53

Was. Where.

59:55

I. Really? Fell.

59:58

In love with Rv. Because. I

1:00:01

need really known that well you know,

1:00:04

just kind of superficially. However, we were

1:00:06

doing stuff with Steven Steven still in

1:00:08

the stuff with his watch, new in

1:00:10

the watch and listen to his watch

1:00:12

and everything were seen. Am tells Rob

1:00:14

just act natural, just react in and

1:00:17

play with it because I. Was

1:00:19

in a big one for scripts. is buying

1:00:21

a worse would tell you. So.

1:00:24

I would let the guys freestyle lot

1:00:26

of times if it works we went

1:00:28

with it to seize look at his

1:00:30

watch, put his watch up to his

1:00:32

ear an Rv D takes the Watson

1:00:34

puts the watch up his years I've

1:00:37

we listen to math but it was

1:00:39

it was real and it was something

1:00:41

that think everybody wanted to do but

1:00:43

they're looking for a script and or

1:00:45

I wasn't told to do that in

1:00:47

auto. Rob free saw with it and

1:00:49

he did any was good steam and

1:00:51

Rob had a chemistry. In Backstage

1:00:53

in the vignettes In that's what led

1:00:55

us to go. There may be something

1:00:58

here. And. Which

1:01:00

is good chemistry. In their match,

1:01:02

Steve take them and Dominator and gets

1:01:04

busted open in the process. Allegedly

1:01:06

Steve had no problem put them over

1:01:08

and knew that he was gonna get

1:01:10

cut open hear. Any

1:01:13

sort of blowback from that The think you're

1:01:15

cutting your biggest star. Know.

1:01:18

I mean again. Steve. Steve.

1:01:21

Had no problem with it and I don't know the

1:01:23

news going to get busted open but he knew that

1:01:25

chair was common. Shit.

1:01:28

Happens when a ballet. On

1:01:30

the September tenth Thrall Rob lives of the

1:01:32

hardcore time with her dying or by tapping

1:01:34

out of ankle lock of Top of the

1:01:36

ramp and after the match asked them throw

1:01:38

some both off the stage. For the

1:01:41

Rv, the pins angle to regain the title

1:01:43

was as cow fine. As. Really

1:01:45

building momentum. Here we list appreciate

1:01:47

he's having matches. With. Both

1:01:49

Angle and Steve Austin. Ah,

1:01:52

I'm. The. Sort of an

1:01:54

interesting story that he had. Around

1:01:56

Nine Eleven, he was traveling

1:01:58

with Mike. Awesome! And.

1:02:01

Of course, Nine Eleven happens. And

1:02:04

their way out in San Antonio now

1:02:06

where they live. And

1:02:08

I'm. Asked

1:02:10

us going down and will talk about that.

1:02:12

have another episode because there's a whole story

1:02:14

here that we'd like to share. But

1:02:17

that first smackdown in Houston on

1:02:20

September thirtieth is really the first

1:02:22

public assembly in the country since

1:02:24

the attacks happened. And. Alma

1:02:26

Match or oh man I. Rob.

1:02:29

A spike badly. And.

1:02:32

I'd love to tell the story. Of.

1:02:34

Nine Eleven do you want to sort of give? Everybody

1:02:36

may be a teaser of what we might be covering

1:02:38

if we have. Recover that my limits. My gmail. Ah

1:02:42

wow. Will Actually okay. I'll

1:02:44

give you a little. I'll give you a

1:02:46

little tease. Actually on

1:02:49

Nine Eleven within

1:02:51

hours. Of. Planes

1:02:54

flying in to the World

1:02:56

Trade Center is horrible tragedy.

1:02:59

I. Was on the phone and I had the.

1:03:03

The. Happenstance to

1:03:05

be on the phone with

1:03:07

President Bush's handler now the

1:03:09

father who which the and

1:03:11

recipes Barbara Bush she was

1:03:13

wonderful lady, had the pleasure

1:03:15

meeting or and traveling with

1:03:17

her grey Grey Lady and

1:03:19

should be sorely missed. But

1:03:21

or husband President Bush. Was.

1:03:25

A good friend of and of Mattress

1:03:27

Mack we talked about on the show

1:03:29

and in the midst of all these

1:03:31

crazy things happening are or show been

1:03:33

cancelled and not knowing what the hell's

1:03:36

going on. There is business

1:03:38

things that have to happen as well

1:03:40

and I happen to find myself on.

1:03:43

A phone. With. Mr.

1:03:45

Bush, President Bush's handler and

1:03:47

while everything's going on. I

1:03:50

asked the question. Could.

1:03:53

The President make the show if we have it

1:03:55

live on Thursday. And

1:03:58

if you guys would ever an elbow. That

1:04:00

I'll tell you what happened

1:04:02

after that. Ah, the handlers

1:04:04

reaction. Vince Mcmahon reaction, Stephanie

1:04:07

reaction, and what actually happened

1:04:09

that day. But Nine Eleven

1:04:11

was a horrible tragedy in

1:04:13

America and. To me,

1:04:15

that day was so day impersonal.

1:04:17

But we were able to pull

1:04:19

off the first public assembly in

1:04:22

the United States in Houston two

1:04:24

days later. And we got! We

1:04:26

got the blessing from. From.

1:04:28

The White House to okay you know

1:04:30

was a score Hindu This We got

1:04:32

the blessing from everyone in Houston that

1:04:34

they were willing to do it and

1:04:36

accept the responsibility with shit loads, the

1:04:38

security and with the hoops and we

1:04:40

had to jump through the actually. Have

1:04:43

that a bath take place. Was

1:04:46

magnificent in and of itself but the

1:04:49

is one of those you know where

1:04:51

were you when that happened And and

1:04:53

I was in vince of mans room

1:04:56

and we watched the second plane hit

1:04:58

Together Lives so it is it was.

1:05:00

I was an incredible day. Well

1:05:04

after this they start the season.

1:05:06

On screen romance with Robin Down

1:05:08

and Stephanie Mcmahon Helmsley who is

1:05:10

the on screen owner of a

1:05:12

C W and and story line

1:05:14

married interpolate. At this time

1:05:16

ah trips as out with the tar

1:05:18

clive. But. They're not yet married

1:05:21

in real life. Ah,

1:05:23

I'm this feels like a Vince Mcmahon

1:05:25

idea. Who came off with Rob Van

1:05:27

Damme being in a romantic relationship with

1:05:29

Stephanie? It was answering

1:05:31

mans idea because he wanted more emotion

1:05:34

out of Rv D and he felt

1:05:36

that Rob was too one dimensional. And

1:05:39

felt that if there was a. A

1:05:42

love interest or or

1:05:44

a relationship. That. We

1:05:46

could get more out of Rob so

1:05:48

it was up to me to make

1:05:50

that pitch so. The. Pits

1:05:53

happens. and rob at

1:05:55

the time was married and he himself

1:05:57

would say he had an insecure wife

1:06:00

who was giving him shit anytime an attractive

1:06:02

woman was even nearby. So

1:06:04

now that there's gonna be some sort of romance

1:06:06

on TV while she's not there, maybe

1:06:09

that's not the best idea. And allegedly he

1:06:11

shares that with you and you say, oh

1:06:14

that's good. I didn't know, I mean

1:06:16

I don't know unless you tell me. So if you

1:06:18

tell me what you're comfortable with or not tell me,

1:06:20

you know that's the difference. So now that I know

1:06:22

what you're comfortable with, I know we

1:06:24

have something we can work with, we'll figure it out.

1:06:27

So he gets to the building the next week and

1:06:30

Ryan gives him the script and

1:06:34

it's the exact same thing and

1:06:36

it even goes a little further than what he was

1:06:38

told it would be at first. I'll

1:06:40

let you take the story from here Bruce. Oh

1:06:43

well the story goes, Rob wanted to kill

1:06:45

me. Rob

1:06:48

wanted to do the famous pick a

1:06:50

hand with me and knock

1:06:52

my head off. But the story

1:06:54

that has never been told on the

1:06:56

other side of that was I did

1:06:58

go back and share Rob's concerns because

1:07:02

when you go to a talent you ask him,

1:07:04

okay do you have any problems with this angle

1:07:06

or this story that we're

1:07:08

going to tell? And Rob had concerns, he didn't want

1:07:10

to do it. In

1:07:12

his real life situation, he

1:07:15

didn't feel comfortable doing it, he didn't want to do

1:07:17

it and I made that known.

1:07:20

Vince's reaction to that was, we

1:07:22

make movies damn it, this

1:07:25

is make believe and he's an actor,

1:07:27

he's god damn it, he's portraying a

1:07:29

character and it's not real.

1:07:33

Well that's tough to explain to

1:07:35

the significant other on the other

1:07:38

side that's sitting at home that

1:07:40

has seen their real life husband

1:07:42

on a quote reality type television

1:07:44

show interacting with

1:07:46

another female. And it's

1:07:48

again when you mix

1:07:50

reality and fantasy it's

1:07:52

a tough mixture. But I had brought it

1:07:54

up and Vince was going to talk to

1:07:57

Rob about it. However, Brian

1:07:59

got to Rob Before Vince got to

1:08:01

rob him. Before I got to rob. And

1:08:04

so allegedly. When. He

1:08:06

sees this. He. Takes great offense

1:08:08

and food. What? You guys have a strong fuck

1:08:10

with him and he says something to Brian like.

1:08:13

Who. Don't have the spies across the face

1:08:15

is you? And. Allegedly

1:08:17

Brian can always say no, no, no,

1:08:19

this is her family I said now

1:08:22

this is Bruce's and Rob says the

1:08:24

where's he at talking about you. And

1:08:26

Brian says please don't smoke

1:08:28

Bruce and Rob again says

1:08:31

whereas yet. And allegedly a

1:08:33

says he's gonna from finds you'd say pick

1:08:35

a hand and sort of. The backstory on

1:08:37

that is wants one of times has he

1:08:39

was a a locker and tough guy and

1:08:41

everybody knew that. Allegedly had

1:08:43

a little bit of a skirmish with

1:08:46

Rob Van Dam. And Rob

1:08:48

said pick a hand. And

1:08:50

when he their didn't. A.

1:08:53

Slap the shit out at as. And.

1:08:56

They. Were cool after that been sorted as

1:08:58

hit the reset button on the relationship and

1:09:01

there was mutual respect. For.

1:09:03

Allegedly he's looking for you here because he thought

1:09:06

he doesn't want to do this. He said you

1:09:08

take care of it and now it's still happening

1:09:10

and it's worse. So. He wants to

1:09:12

play pick a hand. Did you see him that I.

1:09:15

I. Did see him that day and thank god

1:09:17

as employed pick and within. Our

1:09:19

you slap my Rob Van Damme. Especially

1:09:22

when he's pissed off was probably don't

1:09:24

these are you against land mine mine

1:09:26

I did see him. I think Stephanie

1:09:28

got to infer southern been scared to

1:09:30

home and eat. Calm down by the

1:09:32

time he ever got to me. But.

1:09:35

I was actually looking for Rob first.

1:09:38

Before Brian even got doomed to let

1:09:40

him know I. Gonna. Bring into

1:09:43

Vance and like Vince explain to him because

1:09:45

been sad his vision of what he wanted

1:09:47

Rob to do. And.

1:09:49

I had explained Rob's position in why

1:09:51

he didn't wanna do it in bands,

1:09:53

was adamant that he was robbed to

1:09:55

do this and he would talk to

1:09:57

him. So I wanted to get robbed

1:09:59

first. Bring him into Bans. Ryan

1:10:01

got robbed first can of thinking that.

1:10:04

I. Guess. The. We'd already gotten

1:10:06

to Rob and the he was cool

1:10:08

with it. But yeah, thank god cooler

1:10:10

heads prevailed because I'd probably have had

1:10:13

a probably would have picked the last

1:10:15

one. And. That

1:10:17

would hurt the shit out of the right side

1:10:19

of my face, but. Either.

1:10:21

One I'm not sure really. wanna. Wanna.

1:10:24

Take push right with even Stephanie was trying

1:10:26

to sell at hey this is this acting

1:10:28

and will do a funny. Like. I'm

1:10:30

after you, but you'll be oblivious and

1:10:32

and sorta. In. Your Own

1:10:34

World. Meanwhile, Jericho extravagant my

1:10:37

pants. And. She's all about Rv.

1:10:39

The but Rv The is all about

1:10:41

army The and then the angle to

1:10:43

sort of fades away. Oh.

1:10:45

Where was this going? I mean when they gonna

1:10:47

make. The. Larvae the babies are

1:10:49

born the themselves knows it was a

1:10:51

love triangle and it was a it

1:10:54

was a story of to play out

1:10:56

on television but Rob wasn't comfortable with

1:10:58

it. We didn't do it so I

1:11:00

mean that was the end of it.

1:11:02

He moved on. There was a way

1:11:04

to just further their characters and tell

1:11:06

a story and I think everybody can

1:11:09

relate to someone having a crush on

1:11:11

him and and relationship stories. Been

1:11:13

forgiven pay previous than September Twenty

1:11:15

Third and Pittsburgh an Rv be read:

1:11:18

Scirocco here in hardcore math retain the

1:11:20

title. And. The next title role is

1:11:22

Challenging Iraq for that. Every says of you are

1:11:24

all final. And it's the first ever

1:11:26

singles match between I'm in the first time. The

1:11:29

Rov officially has oral final mass weapons of mass

1:11:31

of the the course was. Non. Title.

1:11:33

Of course Rock wins the match.

1:11:36

Add This is the first time. That.

1:11:39

These gathered say off busy See money in

1:11:41

that match? I'm in it is sort of

1:11:43

find the look back at this time and

1:11:45

say. Man. Robs working with Jeff

1:11:47

Hardy working with current Angle is working

1:11:49

with Chris Jericho is working with the

1:11:51

Rocky Beat So Cold. You're pulling

1:11:53

out all the stops here for him. Would you

1:11:55

think of his? Match. Here with

1:11:58

the rock. auto the You

1:12:01

know, I don't I don't think you

1:12:03

can put your finger on and say hey man

1:12:07

that was a bad match with Rob and

1:12:09

maybe that's because it's like Everybody's

1:12:12

gonna shit all over me for this one. I

1:12:14

look at John Cena You know, I like John

1:12:16

Cena because he doesn't work like everybody else. He's

1:12:18

half-assed clumsy in the ring He looks like he's

1:12:21

clumsy, but he knows what the hell he's doing

1:12:23

and he's different. So I like

1:12:25

that. He's unique That's what I loved about

1:12:27

Van Dam. All of his stuff looked good

1:12:30

So probably too good because it

1:12:32

was probably snug, but he was

1:12:34

different in everything that he did

1:12:36

He locked up different he locked up snug

1:12:39

and it felt real man And it was

1:12:42

just the way that he

1:12:44

handled himself that you could you

1:12:46

like the guy easy to

1:12:49

like On

1:12:52

the October 2nd smackdown Rob Van Dam

1:12:54

gets a win over the WWF world

1:12:56

champion Kurt Angle and The

1:12:59

stipulation here is if Rob

1:13:01

Van Dam beats Kurt Angle It's

1:13:03

stone cold Steve Austin gets a title

1:13:05

match against angle for the

1:13:07

title on Monday Night Raw Austin

1:13:10

beat angle a few days later and becomes

1:13:12

the world champion and it

1:13:14

all was set up by RVD beating the champ

1:13:16

again This time in Kurt Angle. Let's

1:13:19

fast forward a few days on October

1:13:21

7th Rob Van Dam beat

1:13:23

Raven in a hardcore match and

1:13:25

I bring this up because allegedly after

1:13:27

the match Raven Sort of

1:13:29

corners Rob and say why did you hit me with the

1:13:31

seam of the trash can an

1:13:33

RVT allegedly says? Oh the half seams

1:13:37

How great is that? Yeah. Well, I

1:13:39

can see that too The

1:13:42

October 15th raw he's again challenging the

1:13:45

rock for the WCW title And

1:13:47

he wins when Stephanie gets involved. What

1:13:50

did the rock think of working with

1:13:52

Rob Van Dam? As

1:13:55

far as I know I think the rock enjoyed working

1:13:57

with Van Dam because he was fun

1:13:59

to work with You know,

1:14:01

if you like that style and I

1:14:03

think rock their styles kind

1:14:05

of meshed and they have good

1:14:08

matches. Hey, speaking of the rock, when

1:14:10

I was at Foley show the other night, there's a guy

1:14:12

in the crowd who, you know, they're doing

1:14:14

a Q and a portion and the

1:14:16

guy stands up and says, I just want to

1:14:18

let you know, you're my favorite wrestler of all

1:14:20

time. And of course, Foley thanks him and says,

1:14:22

hypothetically, what would you say

1:14:24

if the rock were sitting here instead of

1:14:26

me? And everybody sort of laughs and the

1:14:28

guy who's a listener says, Oh, definitely top

1:14:30

five, top five. But

1:14:36

let's talk a little bit about the reactions

1:14:38

that Rob is getting during this time. Arguably

1:14:41

in his match with the rock,

1:14:44

he's getting as many or

1:14:46

maybe more cheers than the rock. Was

1:14:49

there ever any consideration with making him

1:14:51

the guy here? Because it feels like

1:14:53

you're almost there. He's working

1:14:55

with the rock. He's beat Austin. He's beat angle.

1:14:59

Was there ever consideration in late oh one to

1:15:01

just saying, fuck it. We got to just

1:15:03

try this. Paul

1:15:06

Heyman made that. And again, this may be

1:15:08

a situation of, as I've

1:15:10

stated before, where someone in your corner can

1:15:12

work to your detriment and

1:15:15

Paul was in Rob's corner a

1:15:18

lot, you know, maybe to his

1:15:20

detriment sometimes saying, you know,

1:15:22

Rob, that damn is the only one that can

1:15:24

carry this company. We need to do something new

1:15:26

with Rob Van Dam. So to

1:15:30

that extent, it may

1:15:32

have hurt Rob's chances more than

1:15:34

help them sometimes when Paul would

1:15:36

get on Vince's nerves. We

1:15:39

did discuss it and we did look at

1:15:41

Rob as potentially being that guy timing

1:15:44

Vince wanted to get him over more.

1:15:46

Vince felt that he needed more time.

1:15:49

Didn't feel he was over yet. All right. Time

1:15:52

out. We got to talk about our

1:15:54

sponsor today. Of course, you know, it's blue chew. If

1:15:56

you haven't tried it already, what are you waiting for?

1:15:59

1:17:06

A lot like sex. Even when it's

1:17:08

bad, it's pretty good. And we all

1:17:11

1:17:13

In and we've all had some pretty bad pizza.

1:17:15

It was just less than ideal. But. He

1:17:18

member your favorite pizza. The

1:17:20

1:17:55

1:17:58

If. You're. A. Surplus. me honest,

1:18:00

it's all guys listening to this like 98%. When

1:18:04

your wife cooks something that you really, really like,

1:18:06

and you shower her with praise and confidence about

1:18:09

how great it is, you're doing that

1:18:11

because you hope you get more of it, right?

1:18:14

Aha! It works the other way too, boys

1:18:17

and girls. Go ahead and put on a

1:18:19

show. Think about Volutu as like performance

1:18:37

Visit volutu.com for more details and

1:18:39

important safety information. And we thank

1:18:41

Volutu for sponsoring today's podcast. We're

1:18:44

building towards the October 1st

1:18:47

no mercy pay-per-view. And

1:18:49

on the way here, he's technically

1:18:51

healed because he's with the Alliance, but he's

1:18:53

getting cheered so much. And so they're sort

1:18:55

of teasing some things. And on the go-home episode

1:18:58

of SmackDown, before that event, we see

1:19:00

RVD getting out of a limo with Vince and

1:19:02

he frog splashes Austin at the end of the

1:19:04

show, sort of planting the seeds of

1:19:06

doubt that he might be defecting to the WWF

1:19:08

and maybe winning the title. Well,

1:19:11

they have a three-way match here. And in

1:19:14

this match, it's Stone Cold Steve Austin defending

1:19:16

his title against both Kurt Angle

1:19:19

and Rob Van Dam. Of course,

1:19:21

Austin gets the win after hitting

1:19:23

RVD with the stunner. It's a

1:19:25

big deal to headline a pay-per-view, especially knowing

1:19:27

you just debuted in July. Here you are

1:19:29

in October and you're working on top on

1:19:31

pay-per-view with the biggest star in the business

1:19:33

and the next big thing and Kurt Angle.

1:19:36

What do you remember about their match?

1:19:38

It feels like a pretty memorable match

1:19:41

if you go back and watch it,

1:19:43

but I don't know that people still talk about

1:19:45

it maybe the way they should. Wade Keller dug

1:19:47

it. He gave it three and three quarters, but

1:19:50

it certainly felt like you guys were at

1:19:52

least maybe considering the idea of Rob Van

1:19:54

Dam win here, but RVD

1:19:56

himself would say, I just felt

1:19:59

like the third wheel. How was the added

1:20:01

attraction to an already existing feud? Well,

1:20:05

you know what? He was. And

1:20:07

that's probably a correct feeling

1:20:09

because Vince didn't really think that Rob

1:20:11

was over yet but was willing to

1:20:13

try it on and put him in

1:20:15

this position to see how he'd do.

1:20:19

The jury was still out. So

1:20:21

that feeling, I think, was justified on

1:20:23

Rob's part that, you know, maybe

1:20:25

they're just putting me in here and Rob

1:20:27

wasn't feeling it really. And it was a

1:20:30

force. But at the same time, there was

1:20:32

such great chemistry with those three guys. And

1:20:35

it was a groundswell that we didn't

1:20:37

expect that was taking place underneath

1:20:40

all this that you really couldn't deny. I

1:20:44

mean, to the point that Austin allegedly backstage tells

1:20:46

him one day, he had their bath of strap

1:20:48

or rocket ship to your back. Was

1:20:51

there, I mean, you told us that Paul was

1:20:53

sort of campaigning for him. Was there anybody trying

1:20:55

to undermine that that you recall? Was there anybody

1:20:57

who was like, I don't buy it? You

1:21:00

know, I don't think that Triple H was completely sold

1:21:02

on him and didn't feel that he was over to

1:21:05

that extent. I don't think that Vince really felt that

1:21:07

he was over to that extent. And

1:21:09

I think that on Vince's part,

1:21:12

that it was more of a, he just

1:21:15

wasn't feeling it, but it was also, my

1:21:18

opinion was Paul pushing so damn

1:21:20

hard that that made Vince push

1:21:22

away. Let me ask you this. Who

1:21:25

was Triple H pushing for at the time?

1:21:27

Like who did he say, Oh, this

1:21:29

guy here, let me put him over this. This

1:21:32

should be our top guy. Probably,

1:21:35

I don't know. Probably Austin and rock

1:21:37

probably at that time. They

1:21:39

were the top guys. It just feels

1:21:41

funny to me that I, first of

1:21:43

all, I appreciate you saying that because I didn't

1:21:45

expect you to say it, but the narrative online

1:21:48

has always been Triple H fucking hell. Rob

1:21:50

Van Dam back. And he wasn't

1:21:52

a big fan when he first came in. He

1:21:54

definitely was not a big fan of Van Dam's

1:21:56

and didn't get it. He liked Rob,

1:21:58

but he wasn't A big fan. Fan of

1:22:00

his work in didn't think that he

1:22:02

was over to the extent that the

1:22:05

i guess the internet crowd and. Paul.

1:22:09

For example, Would. Push

1:22:11

him to be. So.

1:22:14

Do you think that maybe some of

1:22:16

Aaa says reluctance to sort of by

1:22:18

an. Was. Based on him,

1:22:20

just bans on S. de Paul Heyman.

1:22:25

Ah yes! I

1:22:28

don't know. I really don't know you know

1:22:30

there was. There's also the. The.

1:22:32

Reality of trying to get

1:22:34

promos out of our V

1:22:36

d sometimes were a tour

1:22:38

and. I think that guys

1:22:40

would get lazy and go with the

1:22:43

you know, oh cool dude and go

1:22:45

with the stoner. Almost

1:22:48

answers instead of.

1:22:50

Said. Rob be romp to slip

1:22:53

robbed be Rob in he can

1:23:22

1:23:24

1:23:27

started talking to him, he's quick,

1:23:29

he's funny, But. Man is

1:23:31

gonna needs to and. And.

1:23:35

Oh no than he ever got the

1:23:37

chance. with the exception of the stuff

1:23:39

that he did. With. Austin.

1:23:42

And that alliance to really ever.

1:23:46

Display. That my opinion. Whether.

1:23:50

Still put them over and a big way. I'm in

1:23:52

the night after this. No Mercy Pay per view is

1:23:54

working with big show and is one of them or

1:23:57

three to finish his. It's a hard core mass as

1:23:59

one of the worker the to finish his I remember.

1:24:02

Rv. Be has a fire

1:24:04

extinguisher. Any. Try to suited

1:24:15

1:24:20

Ah, Monday I think that was a

1:24:23

fit thinly finish and on know for

1:24:25

sure. but I did love that I

1:24:27

remember that vividly. Biggest slippers. On

1:24:30

go back to watch band and does take the

1:24:32

living shit out of the chair which is funny

1:24:34

shit to. You. Are some

1:24:36

1:25:08

Team during the Of Yeah which

1:25:10

is Rock, Undertaker T, Jericho, and

1:25:12

Big Show. Ah, a

1:25:14

lot aghast all that. This is

1:25:16

the idea. For. The Invasion

1:25:18

and this is essentially. What? Everybody

1:25:20

thought would be the biggest thing in

1:25:22

the history of wrestling. The have. A

1:25:25

seat of you and overseas of you Under review

1:25:27

F T V. But I think

1:25:29

everybody sort of new. Medicines.

1:25:32

Young ones that with a very of yeah fear. Of

1:25:35

sure your talk about the invasion and

1:25:37

this particular pay per view. in more

1:25:39

detail. What? Do you remember about

1:25:41

this man's where are we The was eliminated. By

1:25:44

Jericho, but the he himself got to

1:25:46

eliminate came in the process. Not a

1:25:48

whole lot other than by the time

1:25:51

we got to Survivor Series, Vince was

1:25:53

done with the whole alliance playing against

1:25:55

or be. The Bf and men was

1:25:57

just tired of it and Dell did.

1:26:00

was a failed experiment and we needed to

1:26:02

move on. So just cut

1:26:05

the cord, move on next. The

1:26:08

next night on Raw he loses a

1:26:10

handicap match two on one to the

1:26:12

Dudley's and then on

1:26:15

SmackDown he loses a

1:26:17

handicap match to Jericho in the Dudley's but

1:26:19

he's teaming with The Rock here. So even

1:26:21

though he's been losing efforts still

1:26:23

positioned as a big time top guy.

1:26:26

Let's go to the Vengeance pay-per-view December 9, 2001. This

1:26:30

is where he finally loses this

1:26:32

hardcore title and he

1:26:34

does it against the newly

1:26:36

turned heel Undertaker. Undertaker

1:26:38

beat him in 11 minutes and

1:26:40

8 seconds. According to the Torch,

1:26:44

Wade gave it three and a quarter stars.

1:26:46

It does feel like a clash of styles here

1:26:48

and it's sort of fun to see like a

1:26:51

rolling thunder on the Undertaker. You just don't

1:26:53

imagine that that's the thing. What

1:26:55

do you remember about this match at Vengeance 01? Well

1:26:59

it was a clash of styles

1:27:01

however Undertaker really wanted to work

1:27:03

with RVD and thought that that

1:27:05

clash of styles, the different type

1:27:08

styles would complement each

1:27:10

other. In my opinion it did because

1:27:12

Taker being a brawler you don't expect

1:27:14

that kind of style and to

1:27:16

be able to get Undertaker off of his game.

1:27:19

Rob with all of his flips and flies

1:27:21

and all the bullshit that RVD does was

1:27:23

another way to attack the Undertaker that had

1:27:26

never been done before. I

1:27:29

remember Paul was just so dead

1:27:31

set against the Undertaker RVD

1:27:34

match because he thought Taker would eat

1:27:36

RVD up and it was to

1:27:39

the contrary I thought that Taker really complimented Rob and

1:27:41

they had a hell of a match. Allegedly

1:27:47

on some episode or maybe just in private

1:27:49

I forget but you told me that this

1:27:52

is the match where Vince

1:27:54

McMahon sort of fell in love with RVD, is

1:27:57

matched with the Undertaker and they beat

1:27:59

the shit out of each other. other. Were

1:28:01

you in guerrilla? I mean, what was Vince's

1:28:04

reaction to this? He sort of

1:28:06

tell me more about this Vince falling

1:28:08

in love with RVD moment here. Good

1:28:12

shit. God damn it. They're

1:28:15

bringing it. Vince liked the

1:28:17

fact that, you know,

1:28:19

it was a different style. It was

1:28:21

a different side of Undertaker and felt

1:28:23

that RVD brought out

1:28:25

a different dimension in Undertaker and contrary

1:28:28

he thought that to the other side

1:28:30

he felt that Undertaker brought out a

1:28:33

different side of RVD and it was something

1:28:35

that he saw in the fact that Rob

1:28:37

hung in there with the Undertaker and that

1:28:39

they had such of a good match. It

1:28:41

made him think, alright, we got a player

1:28:43

here and Undertaker endorsing Van

1:28:45

Dam definitely helped too. So

1:28:48

let's talk about the little details here because

1:28:51

Rob sort of points to this match and

1:28:53

says this match is

1:28:55

one of the moments where you sort

1:28:57

of could showcase the difference between the

1:28:59

WWE and ECW. In ECW

1:29:01

they didn't really know what they were going to do. They would

1:29:03

just go out there and do it. But

1:29:05

with the WWF you had some more planned

1:29:07

stunts and so one of the things they

1:29:09

did here is a crossbody from the bleachers

1:29:12

to the Undertaker and they fall onto a

1:29:14

bunch of stuff and you

1:29:16

guys had your magic folks load

1:29:18

up a bunch of baby powder underneath it

1:29:20

so it creates a visual effect and

1:29:23

nobody would have ever even thought of that in ECW.

1:29:25

I think it's pretty

1:29:27

cool when a wrestler goes out of his way

1:29:29

to sort of talk about the behind-the-scenes production

1:29:31

folks who helped make that happen. Would that

1:29:33

have been a Richie Posner deal? I don't

1:29:36

know if Richie was, yeah, it would have

1:29:39

been a Richie Posner deal. I was gonna

1:29:41

say, I don't know if Richie was here

1:29:43

at this time but he definitely was and

1:29:45

yeah that would have been something that Richie

1:29:47

would have had and we were all about

1:29:49

you know making the effect. You got to

1:29:51

think television and you have to think what's

1:29:54

gonna read on TV and be the best

1:29:56

visual for television and that's what we did.

1:30:00

So they're going to December 17th

1:30:02

here and RVD is wrestling Jericho

1:30:04

for the undisputed title and Rick

1:30:07

flair is the special guest referee.

1:30:10

RVD winds up winning by the hue and around

1:30:13

this same time, allegedly. Johnny

1:30:16

ace is trying to get Rob Van Dam

1:30:18

to sorta let the crowd know when he's

1:30:20

getting fired up, when he's bad, they

1:30:22

don't want you to see, you know, the

1:30:25

laid back RVD all the time.

1:30:28

So he says, when you've had too much, you just

1:30:30

sort of snap like old school

1:30:32

Jerry Lawler would pull down the strap. Maybe

1:30:35

you could take out your ponytail.

1:30:38

Do you remember there being

1:30:41

a conversation about him not

1:30:43

showing enough fire and that being sort of

1:30:45

a soapbox deal for Johnny ace with Rob?

1:30:48

Well, it wasn't necessarily a

1:30:50

soapbox deal with Johnny ace. It

1:30:52

was a soapbox soap box deal

1:30:54

with Vince McMahon. And

1:30:56

I had the guy,

1:30:59

I had the same conversations with Rob about, you

1:31:01

know, what pisses you off? Um,

1:31:04

we need to see more emotion. We need to see more

1:31:07

range. We need to see anger. We need to see happiness.

1:31:09

We need to see fear. We need to see a

1:31:11

range of emotions from you. Rob's

1:31:14

response was, is if I tell you what

1:31:16

pisses me off, then you'll have power over

1:31:18

me. So no, I'm not gonna, I'm not

1:31:20

going to give you that power. I'm not going

1:31:22

to tell you what pisses me off. You know, I'll

1:31:24

do what I think I need to do. Um,

1:31:28

so Johnny, you know,

1:31:31

took that from conversations that we all had

1:31:33

about trying to help our BD and get

1:31:35

more of a range out of him, probably

1:31:37

took it upon himself to make it his

1:31:39

own, but that was coming from Vince and

1:31:41

that was coming from creative, just wanting to

1:31:44

see more emotion out of our BD. Allegedly,

1:31:48

everybody's coming up to him at TV that

1:31:50

day before the master Jericho saying, you gotta

1:31:52

get angry. Don't forget to be angry, be

1:31:54

angry. Think of things that make you mad,

1:31:57

be angry. And Supposedly Jericho

1:31:59

says, right. before they go out. Imagine

1:32:02

a hit on your wife. And.

1:32:04

That really pissed Rob off to the point

1:32:06

that he had though actually cool down afterwards

1:32:08

because he was really in the moment at

1:32:10

that time. Yeah,

1:32:14

I think that everybody pissed him off so

1:32:16

much by telling me get pissed off all

1:32:18

day Cillizza, we found what pissed him off.

1:32:20

keep telling and to get pissed off. Both

1:32:23

probably pissed off when he found out he

1:32:25

was doing at the Royal Rumble Fish very

1:32:27

first one other in Atlanta. January twentieth, two

1:32:29

thousand and two. he comes in a number

1:32:32

twenty nine. it's a big pop, doesn't eliminate

1:32:34

any one and the soon as he gets

1:32:36

in the ring interpolate pedigrees him ah yes,

1:32:38

the seller for a minute and then alert

1:32:41

oh bugger T picks him up as in

1:32:43

1:32:47

the I will say i'm just a few minutes

1:32:49

the oh you're like yeah, civilized enough I can

1:32:52

1:32:54

to me, You. Know you're

1:32:56

over like Rover he beat all the

1:32:58

top guys even buzzes oh you're and

1:33:00

cool pedigree. It's like out. It.

1:33:03

Was written that way. I. Know

1:33:05

analysts and know in hundred and have any

1:33:08

say so in the writing of that. So.

1:33:11

There. You go. Cool. Nights

1:33:16

is a peculiar to smash. Yes you will talk

1:33:18

1:33:37

1:33:39

1:33:42

1:33:44

1:33:47

1:33:50

As of my favorite part, you. is

1:33:53

now we've got forget dave meltzer and then when

1:33:55

you do the cheeseburger order at the end when

1:33:57

1:34:21

America starts the day with America in

1:34:24

the morning. First of three pushes of

1:34:26

Storminess. Hi I'm John Troughs, your host

1:34:31

and weather. Our

1:34:33

staff of correspondents provide a fast

1:34:35

paced look at the world with

1:34:37

1:34:44

Concise, accurate and fresh each

1:34:46

day. America in the morning,

1:34:48

a podcast available wherever you

1:34:50

listen. Our house

1:34:52

is a mess. Come on in.

1:34:55

I'm Amber Wallen, internet comedian and

1:34:57

host of your new favorite podcast,

1:34:59

Fly on the Wallen. That's

1:35:01

pretty presumptuous to assume that this is

1:35:04

going to be their favorite podcast by

1:35:06

the way. Anyway that watch that you

1:35:08

just heard interrupt me is my husband

1:35:10

and co-host Benjamin Wallen. Listen in as

1:35:12

we discuss relationships and keeping our sweet

1:35:15

baby kid alive. Fly on

1:35:17

the Wallen wherever you listen. So

1:35:23

then RVD is in a brief feud

1:35:25

with the returning Goldust. Goldust attacks him

1:35:27

and that sets up the No Way

1:35:30

Out 2002 pay-per-view on February 17th. RVD

1:35:32

gets a win here 12 minutes

1:35:35

and 15 seconds. JR even

1:35:37

says I don't know why Goldust is

1:35:39

after RVD. Only

1:35:41

two stars from Wade Keller who wrote

1:35:43

not bad but the crowd wasn't much

1:35:46

into it other than RVD's signature spots.

1:35:49

It does feel a little weird that

1:35:51

we're going from world title matches and

1:35:53

Rock and Austin and

1:35:55

Jericho and Angle and

1:35:57

now we're with Goldust. them

1:36:01

sort of piss somebody off in the office

1:36:03

here or what happened for this shift because

1:36:05

it certainly feels like a shift. Well

1:36:08

it's just a shift and momentum and

1:36:12

you can't stay on top all the time and yes

1:36:14

you got to go up and down and different things

1:36:16

but it was just gold

1:36:18

dust was back looking for some gold dust to

1:36:20

do and not having anything for Rob at that time

1:36:22

and Robin gold dust it sometimes

1:36:26

you look at two guys you don't have anything

1:36:28

for at the time and you put them together.

1:36:31

The next day he gets a win with Edge

1:36:33

over Regal and Storm and then he works a

1:36:35

couple of house show matches where Mr. Perfect goes

1:36:37

over and he had just returned at the Royal

1:36:39

Rumble so that's pretty cool and he

1:36:41

says he remembers working with Perfect on TV and they

1:36:43

do a spot where he's supposed to cross

1:36:45

body into the floor and when Rob was rolling

1:36:48

around on the floor Kurt said

1:36:51

the camera missed it so we're gonna have to do

1:36:53

it again and they redid the exact same spot and

1:36:56

Ross is that sort of changing

1:36:58

of an era to him because

1:37:00

if they used to send a guy

1:37:04

out and tell you that they missed up the

1:37:06

spot and you had to redo it again but in

1:37:09

this case that didn't have to happen. What

1:37:11

do you remember about sort of horror stories

1:37:13

and even Ric Flair

1:37:15

has one with Macho man about

1:37:18

when Vince says god damn it

1:37:20

do it again. We

1:37:22

did that we just did that all the time. If

1:37:24

there was a screwed up spot if it was taped

1:37:26

right now if it was live you eat it but

1:37:29

if it was taped like on a smackdown

1:37:31

or something and we had the ability I would

1:37:33

sit at Gorilla and I would look and I

1:37:35

could see I could see all the cameras I

1:37:37

knew if we didn't have a good shot to

1:37:39

cover something if someone was screwed up

1:37:41

I would just tell the referee tell them to do

1:37:43

it again and the referee would

1:37:45

usually let guys know sometimes I'd have

1:37:48

cameramen tell them just tell them

1:37:50

to go back and do it all over again they would know

1:37:52

what they screwed up and be able to get back in the

1:37:54

right position. Eagles

1:38:00

to win the air continental title. Wade

1:38:02

gave it two or three quarter stars. Pretty

1:38:05

fun little opener for WrestleMania 18. What'd

1:38:07

you think of RVD and his,

1:38:09

uh, WrestleMania debut here? Well,

1:38:12

we talked about this when I thought

1:38:14

it was a damn good match, because

1:38:16

again, another reason I like William Regal. I'm a

1:38:18

fan of his. Different. He wasn't

1:38:20

the same, you know, he had

1:38:23

that, uh, British style, which is

1:38:25

a little bit different style than

1:38:27

the American catches catch can. And

1:38:30

you're getting in there with a high

1:38:32

flyer and somebody like RVD who's unorthodox

1:38:35

man, I thought they had a hell of a match and it

1:38:37

was a great way to start WrestleMania. It's

1:38:39

a fun sort of memory

1:38:41

too, because you got to remember he

1:38:44

was at WrestleMania three, where he saw Rick

1:38:46

and Steamboat beat macho man

1:38:48

for the intercontinental title and now 15

1:38:51

years later, he's winning the intercontinental title. It's

1:38:53

a cool story, man. It

1:38:55

really is. Yeah. But next night

1:38:57

he successfully defends against Christian. And

1:39:00

then he has a match where he beats Mr. Perfect

1:39:02

on Sunday night heat. But the

1:39:04

big show is what we're talking about here.

1:39:06

March 25th, we would see

1:39:08

Rob beat Kurt angle by the hue. And

1:39:11

then later is the draft where Rob

1:39:14

is going forth overall from Rick Flair.

1:39:17

Why was it decided to have Rob on raw?

1:39:19

We've always heard that that's sort of, you

1:39:22

know, the a show at least in Vince's mind,

1:39:24

and I know you'll argue that, but that's certainly

1:39:26

the perception. A lot of people have who

1:39:29

would have campaigned for Rob to be on raw. If

1:39:31

you had to pick. Well,

1:39:34

probably the raw writers looking at Rob, we

1:39:36

had to change it up and looking for big

1:39:39

names to change it up and mix it up

1:39:41

a little bit, uh, go from Smackdown to raw

1:39:43

and thought Rob would be a good mix on

1:39:45

raw. That's all. Okay.

1:39:50

Um, a bit of a

1:39:52

feud start with Eddie Guerrero and

1:39:54

they actually wrestle at backlash April

1:39:56

21st. And here we would

1:39:58

see Eddie beat RV. to win the

1:40:01

Intercontinental title and he does so with

1:40:03

a frog splash. It's

1:40:05

a three star match according to Wade Keller, but

1:40:07

he wrote, one of the hardest impacts you'll ever

1:40:10

see at 10 minutes in when

1:40:12

Guerrero snaps RVD to the mat with

1:40:14

a sunset flip off the top rope.

1:40:17

Really cool move. What do you remember

1:40:19

about this match where it was a battle

1:40:21

of the frog splashes? Well

1:40:24

now I say fuck Wade Keller. I

1:40:26

thought that the match was magic. Eddie

1:40:30

Guerrero and RVD. You

1:40:35

know, battle

1:40:37

of the frog splash just like you

1:40:39

said and these were two guys that

1:40:42

went out there and they

1:40:45

had worked before. I believe they

1:40:47

worked in ECW before. Not

1:40:49

a lot, but they wanted to work

1:40:52

with each other and anytime you get two guys that

1:40:54

want to work with each other and they have

1:40:57

chemistry outside of the ring, the chemistry inside the

1:40:59

ring is going to show. Eddie

1:41:02

Guerrero and RVD in my eyes

1:41:04

was a dream match because they

1:41:07

were just both so damn good. And

1:41:11

it happened again on May 19th at

1:41:13

Judgment Day. Eddie would beat Rob Van Dam in

1:41:15

10 minutes and 47 seconds. Again,

1:41:18

it's another opening match with the Intercontinental

1:41:21

title, but a good match.

1:41:23

Three stars and the

1:41:25

next time on Raw, Rob is walking into

1:41:27

the ring and the Undertaker comes out and

1:41:29

attacks him from behind, beating him up badly

1:41:31

where Rob even gets a lot of color for

1:41:33

this. And later in the night, they have a match

1:41:35

for the Undisputed title and Rob hits

1:41:37

him with the Rolling Thunder and gets a three

1:41:39

count, but Taker's foot was on the

1:41:41

rope. So RVD was announced as the new champion,

1:41:44

given the belt has a huge crowd pop

1:41:46

and then Flair comes out and says Taker's foot was

1:41:48

on the rope, orders the match

1:41:51

to be restarted and Taker winds up

1:41:53

winning. Pretty old school,

1:41:55

but awesome dusty finish when done well.

1:41:57

What do you remember about this night?

1:42:00

They teased that RVD was

1:42:02

the champ and it beat the Undertaker. Nice

1:42:05

little swerve, get people talking and you

1:42:08

know the biggest regret was not

1:42:10

doing more with it beyond

1:42:12

one night. However, Vince was big on you

1:42:14

know let's give him something we're not going

1:42:17

to give him in house shows and maybe

1:42:19

we aren't going to go beyond it. But

1:42:21

it was a wonderful build

1:42:23

for the night and gave

1:42:26

people a swerve there at the end. I

1:42:28

wasn't a big fan of the finish but it

1:42:31

worked and it was done well. It

1:42:33

is sort of weird that you say these two

1:42:36

guys working together is what Vince fell in love

1:42:38

with and then they do this world

1:42:40

title thing with him and then just

1:42:42

nothing. Never again. Yeah.

1:42:45

It's crazy because it worked.

1:42:47

It was good. It's almost

1:42:50

like somebody's in the back holding him

1:42:52

down. It's weird. chrisrichard.com.

1:42:55

May 27th, RVD

1:42:58

meets Eddie Guerrero in a classic

1:43:00

ladder match and regains the Intercontinental

1:43:02

title but that's not the story

1:43:04

here. The story is during the match some fucking

1:43:06

idiot ran into the ring and tried to push

1:43:08

the ladder down while Eddie's still on it. Eddie

1:43:11

jumps down and punches the fuck out of that guy.

1:43:13

What do you remember about this? I

1:43:16

remember thanking God that that's all Eddie did was

1:43:18

punching the fuck out of the guy. It's

1:43:21

just so stupid and for anybody out there

1:43:23

don't ever run into the ring for any

1:43:25

reason whatsoever. Now in the old days what

1:43:27

would have happened is that guy would have

1:43:29

got the living shit kicked out of him

1:43:31

so that he wouldn't have been able to

1:43:33

walk out of the arena and there were

1:43:35

old time promoters like Bill Watts that if

1:43:37

you didn't kick the shit out of a

1:43:40

fan that ran in or

1:43:42

jumped in then you'd be fired. So

1:43:44

the fact that the guy ran in tried to

1:43:47

push the ladder over when Eddie was on it,

1:43:49

it could have really done some damage to Eddie

1:43:51

so Eddie was pissed about that and

1:43:53

in defense of his life there the

1:43:56

guy's lucky he was able to walk out of the building. And

1:44:00

on the way, they have a qualifying match where

1:44:02

Rob pins Eddie. Then in round one,

1:44:04

he beats X-Pac. Uh, and

1:44:06

then eventually he gets to the semi-finals and

1:44:08

this happens at the actual king of the

1:44:10

ring pay-per-view in Columbus on June 23rd, and

1:44:12

he's working with

1:44:14

Chris Jericho. RVD gets the win in

1:44:16

14 minutes and

1:44:19

33 seconds, three and a

1:44:21

half stars. But after the match, Jericho

1:44:23

attacks RVD with the walls of Jericho

1:44:25

to quote unquote, get his heat

1:44:28

back. According to Wade Keller. What'd

1:44:30

you think of this match here? King of the ring. I

1:44:33

enjoyed it. I thought, you know, and again,

1:44:36

it's funny that you brought up at the

1:44:38

very beginning that there was a little heat

1:44:40

there between RVD and Jericho, because I always

1:44:42

thought that they had damn good

1:44:44

matches and performed it every time that they

1:44:46

were given the ball. So that

1:44:48

was a little shocking to me. And

1:44:50

this was another example of them going out

1:44:52

and delivering. The

1:44:55

main event that night isn't maybe exactly what

1:44:57

everybody was expecting, but maybe you should in

1:44:59

hindsight. It's the king of the ring finals

1:45:01

and Rob Van Dam loses to Brock Lesnar

1:45:03

in about five and a half minutes. RVD

1:45:06

gets in a little bit of offense early,

1:45:08

but then Brock just dominates from

1:45:11

there. He does sneak in the five

1:45:13

star frog splash, but Heyman interferes

1:45:16

and RVD. Is

1:45:18

not victorious here. Uh, two

1:45:20

stars from Wade Keller who wrote solid

1:45:22

for a five minute match. What'd

1:45:25

you think of this? Because it does feel like

1:45:27

two of the biggest prospects in the company are

1:45:29

in the main event. Well,

1:45:32

yes, they were the biggest prospect

1:45:34

in the company. Definitely in Brock

1:45:36

Lesnar. However, Brock was still pretty

1:45:38

damn green and he was

1:45:42

ready for prime time, but I don't know that

1:45:44

it was the best damn match in the world

1:45:47

because this was without a doubt

1:45:49

a style's clash. And

1:45:52

they're, they're, they just didn't really mesh

1:45:55

that well. And it, it was awkward

1:45:57

at times, but passable and

1:45:59

it was way. get Brock over. So

1:46:01

it served its purpose in that

1:46:03

regard. Fun little story from this

1:46:06

match. Rob has said

1:46:08

that he didn't really know what Brock's finish

1:46:10

was. So Brock is trying to describe the

1:46:12

F5 to him, but he's not

1:46:14

getting it. And eventually, Brock says, don't

1:46:16

worry about it. I'll get you there. And

1:46:20

Rob is sort of thinking, well, a lot of

1:46:22

people say that, but I'm heavier than they imagined.

1:46:24

They probably think I'm 200 pounds, but I'm over

1:46:26

240. You're probably

1:46:29

underestimating me. And then of

1:46:31

course he gets out there and says, well, he made me

1:46:33

feel like I was five pounds. Well,

1:46:36

Rob Van Dam is sick. And

1:46:39

I've heard a lot of

1:46:41

guys talk about how they

1:46:43

think that Rob is a lot lighter than he

1:46:45

actually is until you get in the ring with

1:46:47

him. And he's thick and he's heavy. But

1:46:52

Brock Lesnar is what we call cock

1:46:54

strong strong

1:46:57

like bull. The next

1:47:00

night on raw RVD interrupts Brock's

1:47:02

coronation and they have a match

1:47:04

later that night. And Rob actually has Brock

1:47:06

pinned after the split leg at moonsault, but

1:47:08

Haman interferes. And then Rob hit Haman

1:47:11

with the five star frog splash

1:47:13

and then Brock power bombs him through

1:47:15

the announcers table. So you guys

1:47:17

are really still pushing him here in a big way. On

1:47:20

July 8th, we see RVD team up

1:47:23

with Goldust, Booker, Bubba and spike to

1:47:25

take on Eddie Nash, Benoit, big show

1:47:27

and X-Pac. And RVD even

1:47:29

chases Shawn Michaels up the ramp who

1:47:32

was ringside with the NWO and

1:47:34

Lesnar attacked RVD and F5 him

1:47:36

on the ramp. This is

1:47:38

the match that pretty famously had

1:47:40

Kevin Nash, Terrace quad, essentially

1:47:43

walking across the ring and people

1:47:45

still talk about it to this day. I know

1:47:48

we're going to do a diesel episode sometime, but

1:47:50

what do you remember about this match and this

1:47:52

Kevin Nash injury? Step

1:47:55

step. Fall

1:47:58

down. You

1:48:01

know, that's pretty much what we all remember

1:48:03

about it. That's the only thing that was

1:48:05

a takeaway on that match for me because

1:48:07

it was, you saw it happen and you're

1:48:09

thinking, what the hell happened to Kevin? Did

1:48:11

he twist his ankle? Did he turn his

1:48:13

knee? And the

1:48:16

rest, as they say, is history. But it changed

1:48:18

the course of the

1:48:20

whole damn summer with that one quad tear

1:48:22

because at that point everything's getting

1:48:24

changed all over again. Let's

1:48:27

go to vengeance. July 21st, we would

1:48:29

see Rob beat Lesnar by DQ to

1:48:31

retain his title. He beat

1:48:33

Brock here in nine minutes and 39 seconds. Of

1:48:36

course, Heyman causes the DQ again when it

1:48:38

looks like Brock is about to lose. If

1:48:43

the thought is, or sort

1:48:45

of taught me through this, Van

1:48:47

Dam isn't the king of the ring, but

1:48:49

he's sort of being booked in a stronger

1:48:51

position here. Is this because you weren't really

1:48:54

sold on Brock at this point?

1:48:56

And maybe you were teeter tottering with who needed to

1:48:58

have the push or is this just a way to

1:49:00

sort of keep this story going? Well,

1:49:03

no, it was just a logical match to,

1:49:05

to, to have with Brock

1:49:07

coming off of the king of the ring, but still

1:49:09

at the same time, it made, it

1:49:12

made Brock look good and it was, you

1:49:14

know, Heyman on the DQ. So it

1:49:17

wasn't a clean finish and it

1:49:19

was kind of 50 50 to make both

1:49:21

guys look good. Let's

1:49:23

talk about the next line on Raw

1:49:25

because it's intercontinental versus European title for

1:49:27

title. And it's going to be a

1:49:30

unification ladder match. RVD beats

1:49:32

Jeff Hardy to retain the intercontinental title

1:49:34

and win the European, a unifies

1:49:37

them and therefore retires the

1:49:39

European title. Why was it

1:49:41

decided to sort of abolish the European title here,

1:49:43

Bruce? Too many championships and

1:49:45

Vince wasn't a big fan of the

1:49:47

European championship. Kind of like I'm not

1:49:49

a big fan of the US championship. Well,

1:49:52

I think it's a beautiful title that our friend Dave

1:49:54

Milliken makes. Okay.

1:49:58

On Raw, July 29th. It's been

1:50:00

Waa beat Rob to win the intercontinental title.

1:50:02

And this match sort of comes out of

1:50:04

nowhere. I don't think at this point they'd

1:50:06

wrestled in a singles match at all. Why

1:50:08

was it decided to take the belt off Rob

1:50:10

here and put it on Ben? Why? It

1:50:13

was Ben was time. And if

1:50:16

you want a great match, put Ben, why

1:50:18

in there with RVD, they will

1:50:20

beat the shit out of each other. Well,

1:50:24

they did. And on August 12th, RVDB

1:50:26

Jeff Hardy to earn a match against

1:50:28

Ben, what summer slam and

1:50:30

then come summer slam August 25th, he

1:50:32

does indeed beat Ben water, regained the

1:50:34

intercontinental title and Rob says before

1:50:37

the match, he remembers Ben was saying, I want

1:50:39

you to kick me as hard as you fucking

1:50:41

can. And Rob

1:50:44

remembers thinking I'm going to make him sorry. He

1:50:46

said that. And he says he

1:50:48

kicked him so hard that his eyes sort of seemed

1:50:50

to cross. But Chris loved it.

1:50:52

What do you remember of this match? Well,

1:50:55

you know, there were a group of

1:50:57

those guys like Jericho and, uh,

1:50:59

RVD, Benoit, Perry

1:51:01

Saturn guys like that, that used

1:51:04

to just kind of have an agreement. Hit me as

1:51:06

hard as you want. Anywhere you want, make it stiff.

1:51:08

Just don't hit me in the face and

1:51:12

the harder, the better. So there, there were

1:51:14

guys that just loved that. And these were

1:51:16

two guys that, that loved getting in the

1:51:18

ring and mixing it up and being as

1:51:20

stiff as they possibly could. The next line

1:51:22

on raw in another unification match. This time

1:51:24

Rob beat Tommy dreamer to unify the intercontinental

1:51:27

and the hardcore title. So now the hardcore

1:51:29

title is retired. And I

1:51:31

guess essentially Rob here is the last European

1:51:34

and the last hardcore champion during this era.

1:51:37

Um, Rob

1:51:39

was a little disappointed that the hardcore title

1:51:41

was retired because he was having fun and

1:51:44

motivated when he got to use some of

1:51:46

those weapons and whatnot. Who

1:51:49

was sort of anti the hardcore title? Is

1:51:51

this another event? There's too many titles. I

1:51:53

don't like hardcore or somebody else involved in

1:51:55

that decision. That was the mandate with Vince.

1:51:57

He was just there. We had too many

1:51:59

titles. wanted to reduce the number of

1:52:01

titles, make the few that we have

1:52:03

mean more and

1:52:06

X on the hardcore.

1:52:09

It was, it was time to move on. I

1:52:11

guess it's worth mentioning here that RVD did

1:52:13

indeed get a win over Triple H on

1:52:15

September 2nd. RVD's teaming

1:52:18

with Rick Flair to take on Triple H

1:52:20

and Jericho. This is where you kiss ass,

1:52:22

not me. Oh

1:52:24

yeah, RVD shouldn't have beaten Triple H. I understood the pedigree

1:52:26

you just asked. But like he did with the Royal Rumble

1:52:28

and embarrassed him in his first Royal Rumble, I agree. Why

1:52:31

is that embarrassing? Well, I mean, the Bushrocker looked a motherfucker.

1:52:34

I didn't. I mean, pretty much.

1:52:36

So September 9th, RVD wins a four

1:52:38

corner match against Big Show, Jeff Hardy

1:52:40

and Jericho. And the gist is

1:52:42

you get to be the number one

1:52:44

contender for the world title. So

1:52:46

the next week, of course, he loses

1:52:48

the Intercontinental title to Jericho. Now most

1:52:50

people would say, well, that's because you're

1:52:53

going to put the world title on

1:52:55

him. Let's see what happens. September 2nd,

1:52:57

unforgiven. Triple H

1:52:59

beats RVD to retain the title after

1:53:01

Flair comes in and hit RVD

1:53:03

with a sledgehammer. And this

1:53:06

started Triple H and Flair's alliance officially.

1:53:09

And it eventually became Evolution.

1:53:12

The match goes 18 minutes and 17 seconds. And

1:53:15

here's what Wade Killer had to say. Good

1:53:18

crowd heat for the opening antics between the

1:53:20

two. RVD outwrestled Hunter in the early minutes.

1:53:23

Hunter went to ringside to catch his breath. RVD

1:53:26

had a water bottle thrown at

1:53:28

him and mocked Triple H's water

1:53:30

spouting routine. Hunter

1:53:32

got even more upset and charged RVD, who

1:53:34

gave him an arm drag followed by a

1:53:36

hip toss and a side headlock. Eventually

1:53:39

Ross points out that RVD was winning

1:53:41

with basics rather than with dazzling kicks

1:53:44

and flips. Not an all

1:53:46

out intense match, but a very good action. Climaxing

1:53:48

with RVD, signaling for the five

1:53:51

star frog splash. He

1:53:53

scored a visual three count on Hunter and

1:53:55

RVD jumped to ringside to get the ref's

1:53:57

attention and Hunter gave RVD a low

1:53:59

blow. from behind and then grabbed

1:54:02

a sledgehammer from under the ring. RVD leaped

1:54:04

and kicked the hammer out of hunters hands.

1:54:06

Flair ran to the ring, picked up the

1:54:08

sledgehammer and

1:54:10

then turns and nails RVD

1:54:12

in the gut with the hammer. Hunter

1:54:15

looks shocked but nevertheless pedigrees

1:54:18

RVD and covers them. The

1:54:21

ref is thrown into the ring by Flair. Flair

1:54:24

looks at Hunter and says you're

1:54:26

the man and hands in the big gold

1:54:28

belt. Three and a half

1:54:30

stars. What did you think of the

1:54:32

match? I thought they had a hell of

1:54:34

a match and you know it's

1:54:36

funny when you said oh what what predictably what

1:54:38

should have happened was because RVD lost their continental

1:54:41

title we're gonna put the world title on him

1:54:44

and unfortunately sometimes that was the thought

1:54:46

that okay we're gonna do that we're

1:54:48

gonna swerve the smart fans who

1:54:50

think that's what's gonna happen and that's not

1:54:52

gonna happen it's a

1:54:54

story and yes people were

1:54:57

probably leaning there which again makes the

1:54:59

flair turn and the marriage with hunter

1:55:01

Flair mean more and he got screwed

1:55:03

so it was a good story. RVD

1:55:08

clearly here has said that he felt

1:55:10

like Hunter was holding him down and

1:55:12

that Hunter was always cordial to him

1:55:14

and they were always cordial to each

1:55:16

other but he just doesn't believe

1:55:18

Triple H saw in him what the fans did and

1:55:22

then later years he's almost freestyle maybe he's

1:55:24

right because he's making the decisions up there

1:55:26

and I'm not. Was

1:55:29

there anybody else that was sort of

1:55:31

down on Rob or was it

1:55:33

just Hunter holding him down personally? No

1:55:36

there were there were some agents that

1:55:38

weren't you know completely sold on RVD

1:55:40

and not and probably because it was

1:55:43

of the stigma of

1:55:45

ECW and the hardcore style

1:55:47

that just

1:55:50

carried you know it was like that

1:55:52

black cloud almost sometimes but from

1:55:54

the match from this match I remember Hunter going

1:55:56

okay you know what man that was good match

1:55:59

and and liking Rob at

1:56:01

first, Hunter didn't see it. And he really,

1:56:04

you know, he was vocal about it going, I don't

1:56:06

get it. And

1:56:08

that was the feeling backstage. A

1:56:12

lot of people in wrestling at this point, I think

1:56:14

that Rob Van Dam is one

1:56:16

of, if not the best performer in the

1:56:19

company, at least on this run, he had

1:56:21

this first year pro wrestling illustrated, which was

1:56:23

still a thing. Um, gave

1:56:26

him the number one in the PWI 500 that year. And

1:56:29

said that he out wrestled everybody else on

1:56:31

the roster. Tommy Dreamer tells

1:56:33

a different story though. He's briefly on the

1:56:36

booking team for hiccup around WrestleMania 19

1:56:38

in 2003. And

1:56:41

triple H didn't have an opponent yet. We just

1:56:43

covered this and allegedly Tommy

1:56:45

suggests Rob, but triple H sort

1:56:47

of shrugs that off as being

1:56:49

ridiculous because Rob's not over enough.

1:56:52

Do you remember that conversation? I

1:56:55

don't remember Tommy Dreamer ever being in

1:56:57

a creative meeting with us. So, uh,

1:57:01

you know, we've talked about that a couple of times.

1:57:03

I don't ever remember Tommy being a part of any

1:57:05

creative meeting that I was a part of anyway. After

1:57:10

this, he's teaming with Jeff Hardy on

1:57:12

raw to take on Jericho and Christian.

1:57:15

And they even do a world tag

1:57:17

team title, TLC match, uh,

1:57:19

where they're, you know, not only

1:57:21

taking on Jericho and Christian, but Bubba and

1:57:23

Spike Dudley, and even Kane and hurricane, um,

1:57:28

sort of a fun deal. October

1:57:30

13th. Here's a fun

1:57:32

one. A lumberjack match. Triple H

1:57:34

beat RVD. Huh. Surprised.

1:57:38

Uh, no mercy goes down October

1:57:40

20th and it's RVD taken on Ric

1:57:42

Flair. They go two and a quarter

1:57:44

stars in eight minutes. Um,

1:57:48

killer would write that it was a bit of a styles

1:57:50

clash. What'd you think of,

1:57:52

uh, sort of getting bumped down the card?

1:57:54

It makes logical sense. I guess that your

1:57:57

main eventing a pay-per-view and the guy who costs you

1:57:59

a world title. match, you're going to take him on with

1:58:01

the next pay-per-view. But at this time

1:58:03

going from triple H in the main event

1:58:05

to Rick flair, quite a fall

1:58:07

month to month, isn't it? So working

1:58:10

with Rick flair is a fall and that's

1:58:12

a demotion. Well,

1:58:15

I think a lot of people thought he'd be the

1:58:17

world champion and flair would not have been in a

1:58:19

world title match here at this time. Well,

1:58:21

actually, yeah, Rick was in world title matches

1:58:24

after this. Unroll the review.

1:58:28

What? Not on pay-per-view. Don't talk to me

1:58:30

about raw. I'm talking about paper. Well, he

1:58:32

was, it was in world title matches and

1:58:34

raw. Some people would argue it's even more

1:58:36

important than pay-per-view matches. Paychecks didn't pay checks said

1:58:38

pay-per-view. Sure they did. And nobody made

1:58:40

more money on raw than they made on a pay-per-view. Sure

1:58:43

they did. But who? When

1:58:45

did that happen? Give me a time and date.

1:58:47

April 17th. Oh

1:58:53

no, you know what? Um, this was

1:58:55

logical because of the story we were

1:58:57

telling him. There was the one that

1:58:59

screwed RVD in the previous pay-per-view

1:59:02

for the championship. It was logical to

1:59:04

have RVD and flair face each other

1:59:06

and the match wasn't good. Um,

1:59:09

you know, Rick was in

1:59:11

the twilight of his career, you know, at this

1:59:13

point. Oh, wait. So it is

1:59:15

a demotion or it's not a demotion. You're saying it wasn't

1:59:17

good in this twilight. No, I'm not saying it was a

1:59:19

demotion. I'm saying it's a high profile match to be in

1:59:21

the ring with Rick flair. I'm saying at this time, it

1:59:23

wasn't the same Rick flair of the 1980s. That's

1:59:26

what I said. And you said, no, no, you said it

1:59:28

was a demotion that now he had fallen all the way

1:59:30

down the card to have to wrestle Rick flair. Well,

1:59:34

um, you just say it was a big deal

1:59:36

to wrestle Rick flair, but I'm also saying Rick

1:59:38

flair wasn't the same Rick flair at this point

1:59:40

in his career. So he's good enough to

1:59:42

beat Rick flair, but not good enough to be triple H. Well,

1:59:47

obviously he didn't, but he did actually know you

1:59:50

actually had in there where he did be a triple

1:59:52

H. Yeah. But you gloss

1:59:54

over those and everything. No, no, that was

1:59:56

a bullshit. I'm sorry. Okay. So to you,

1:59:58

it's more important to win. matches how many

2:00:00

matches did Rick win when he was the

2:00:02

champion? None but what I'm saying there you

2:00:05

go he was the champion and you guys

2:00:07

would not allow Rob Van

2:00:09

Den to be the champion because Triple H didn't want

2:00:11

it. But we did. Eventually

2:00:14

but not here because Triple H didn't

2:00:16

want it. No

2:00:18

that's not true because Vince McMahon didn't want it.

2:00:20

Because Triple H got in his ear. No

2:00:24

because Vince didn't want it. Okay nobody

2:00:26

has Vince's ear got it. So the

2:00:28

next line on Raw RVD and Kane team up for the

2:00:30

first time. I am the only one. And they beat Rick

2:00:32

and Triple H. After that Rob's

2:00:35

working house shows with Rico. Damn

2:00:40

right. On November 11th Rob. You

2:00:42

can bad mouth Rico now. No I just

2:00:44

said Rico. Okay. Rob and Kane beat

2:00:48

the tag champs Jericho and Christian by

2:00:50

DQ and that gets us to November

2:00:52

17th the elimination

2:00:54

chamber. We've covered this of course.

2:00:57

We've got Triple H defending his

2:00:59

title against RVD, Shawn

2:01:01

Michaels, Kane, Jericho and

2:01:03

Booker T. Hell

2:01:05

of a match here. We've covered it

2:01:07

in our archives. Briefly what do

2:01:09

you want to tell us about this one? Well

2:01:12

you know this was the first elimination

2:01:15

chamber match so the first time guys

2:01:17

are working in it it was snug

2:01:19

as hell hurt like hell every

2:01:21

time you hit it no matter where you hit

2:01:23

it everything in it hurt. But

2:01:25

there was a spot in the match where RVD

2:01:28

came off the top and the

2:01:31

pod was so damn high Rob didn't

2:01:33

have any room to jump up he

2:01:36

had to jump out and when he

2:01:38

did his knee came down across Triple

2:01:40

H's throat and crushed Triple H's trachea.

2:01:45

Pretty serious injury and that

2:01:48

happened in the match but it was an

2:01:50

accident and everybody looked at it as an

2:01:52

accident. It was just an unfortunate thing that

2:01:54

happened but I don't

2:01:56

know I

2:01:58

remember Rob getting up. on top

2:02:00

of the pod earlier in the day and

2:02:03

just thinking, goddamn, I've got to go out

2:02:05

and I can't go up, which

2:02:08

he did know, but, you know, he also thought

2:02:10

he could do it. And I don't know, he's

2:02:12

completely comfortable with it, but he did it and

2:02:14

it didn't work out too well. So

2:02:17

the next night on raw, Rob wins a

2:02:20

triple thread match against Jericho and Booker T

2:02:22

to become the number one contender for the

2:02:25

world title and wrestle Shawn Michaels. So

2:02:27

on the November 25th, raw Rob

2:02:29

beat Shawn Michaels by the hue

2:02:31

after triple H interfered. Earlier

2:02:34

in the show, a segment was done

2:02:36

or showing an RVD slapped each other

2:02:38

very hard. And all

2:02:41

day behind the scenes, Jericho was

2:02:43

trying to bring emotion out of Rob

2:02:46

because he didn't feel like he was as excited

2:02:48

as he should be to be working with Shawn

2:02:50

Michaels. To the point that even Stephanie

2:02:52

comes over to him and says, I don't know if

2:02:54

this is a dream match or if you get excited

2:02:56

about things like that and sort of wanted to feel,

2:02:59

you know, feel him out. How

2:03:01

was he feeling about it? And

2:03:03

Rob felt like he'd

2:03:05

been here a long time, busting

2:03:07

his ass, having great matches consistently

2:03:10

with everyone. And if this guy

2:03:12

comes back after four years and the match isn't great,

2:03:14

it's going to be all my fault. Is

2:03:16

that fair to say? No,

2:03:19

I don't think it's fair to say, but I think it's fair to

2:03:21

say that Rob was feeling that way. And I

2:03:24

think that the way that it was positioned to

2:03:26

him by a lot of people like Stephanie and

2:03:28

other people coming up to him and go, Oh,

2:03:30

this is a big deal. You know, working with

2:03:32

Shawn Michaels now and Shawn's back. And this is

2:03:34

a big, huge deal. I

2:03:37

could see where he felt that way. Absolutely. I

2:03:40

guess it's worth mentioning here that the

2:03:45

very next time we see them

2:03:47

wrestle, we don't. I mean,

2:03:49

this is a dream match. I mean, going back to

2:03:52

96, 97, 98, a lot of people in 97, especially

2:03:54

like in this pro wrestling illustrator

2:03:58

type magazines, the aftermath. If

2:04:00

you will, who would freestyle that the

2:04:02

real dream match for super fans was Rob

2:04:04

Van Dam and Shawn Michaels. And I was

2:04:06

for that. I agreed. I really wanted

2:04:08

to see that. It felt like, you know, the

2:04:11

best wrestler now with what could be the

2:04:13

best wrestler next to the next big thing,

2:04:16

but they never really had an extended

2:04:18

program. Why do you think that is? Why

2:04:20

wasn't there more magic and more money and Sean

2:04:22

and Rob Van Dam? I just,

2:04:24

I think timing. And I also think

2:04:27

it had to do with Sean's limited

2:04:29

schedule. Sean wasn't coming back full time.

2:04:32

So we didn't have that luxury of being

2:04:34

able to book Sean all the time on

2:04:36

TVs and on house shows and

2:04:38

different things. So this

2:04:40

period Sean was looked at strictly

2:04:43

as an attraction, also a short, very

2:04:45

short term. The decision

2:04:47

to put the championship on him was kind of a

2:04:50

last minute decision and no one was

2:04:52

looking for Sean to be around more than a couple of

2:04:54

months. December

2:04:56

2nd, we see a number one contender match

2:04:58

on raw. This is for Sean's world title

2:05:01

and Sean's actually the ref here. Triple

2:05:03

H beats Rob Van Dam. Remember,

2:05:08

then what happened? Rumoring innuendos around

2:05:10

this time, whenever they saw

2:05:12

each other in catering, church catering, Triple

2:05:14

H would demand that he gave Rob

2:05:16

a pedigree. Can you confirm? Yeah,

2:05:20

that happened all the time. Yeah. Oh

2:05:25

my gosh. After this, they're working house shows. You

2:05:27

know what happens? Uh, Rob beat

2:05:29

Triple H every night. Yeah. By DQ.

2:05:32

Yeah. Still beat him. Silly nonsense. So early

2:05:35

January of 03, you're silly nonsense. Rob

2:05:37

starts the team with Scott Steiner to

2:05:40

beat Triple H and Batista on house

2:05:42

shows. Wait, wait. They beat Triple

2:05:44

H. Yeah. Well, Scott Steiner did. He beat Batista.

2:05:46

I mean, Triple H ain't laying down unless it's

2:05:48

a house show. Wouldn't he? Can you say that

2:05:51

he wouldn't lay down for Scott Steiner before? Well,

2:05:53

he didn't. Well, you just said Scott

2:05:55

Steiner beat him every night. No, Batista, he beat

2:05:57

Batista. He

2:05:59

says Triple. H. Okay.

2:06:03

Can we keep going here? Yeah, go ahead.

2:06:05

Rob is from Michigan and old Ham cubes is

2:06:07

from Michigan, so they hit it off. This is

2:06:09

a time when we didn't hear that Scott

2:06:12

really hit it off of many people. What

2:06:15

was it about these two? Just the Michigan

2:06:17

background or why did these two guys get

2:06:19

along so well? I think it

2:06:21

was just the Michigan background of finding

2:06:24

common ground in that. Royal Rumble

2:06:26

03. Rob's in the Rumble

2:06:28

match as soon as he steps through triple H

2:06:30

pedigree. Just kidding.

2:06:33

He comes in at number 12. He eliminates

2:06:35

Jeff Hardy and he's eliminated by Kane. He

2:06:39

didn't really have a lot of run here

2:06:41

in any of these Rumble matches. He started

2:06:43

in and out pretty quickly. Was

2:06:46

that because he didn't really enjoy forearms to the

2:06:48

face or what was the thinking? No

2:06:52

reason, just the way the cards felt. And sometimes

2:06:54

when you're laying out a match, you don't have

2:06:56

spots for everybody and you try and get people

2:06:58

in and out and it just

2:07:00

fits that way. It's like a puzzle. The

2:07:03

next night we're back to the same old puzzle.

2:07:05

Rob beats Jeff Hardy, which it feels like we've

2:07:07

said a thousand times on this show. And he's

2:07:10

working house shows against Jericho and Christian and he

2:07:12

even has a couple with D. Lo Brown. He

2:07:14

beat Kane by DQ on

2:07:16

the February 3rd Raw and

2:07:19

then they start to team up on house shows after

2:07:21

that and they become a bit of a regular team.

2:07:23

And Rob at the time didn't think it made

2:07:26

much sense to him while they were put together,

2:07:28

but he really enjoyed Glenn personally and

2:07:30

they seem to get along well.

2:07:33

What was the thinking in trying to

2:07:35

put them together? Opposites

2:07:37

attract and when looking

2:07:39

at, you know, we were looking for something for

2:07:42

both guys to do. You

2:07:44

have Kane, the big red machine and a monster

2:07:46

and then you got Rob Van Damme, laid back,

2:07:49

cool guy. No

2:07:51

one in a million years would really think, hey, wouldn't

2:07:53

they be a great team? And then we thought, damn,

2:07:55

that would make a pretty damn good team. And

2:07:58

it was just the the ying and the the yang of

2:08:00

it and pretty much what RVD is

2:08:02

all about. I think that when they met in the

2:08:05

middle, they made an awesome team. I

2:08:08

feel like it's worth mentioning here that they're working a

2:08:11

lot with three-minute warning and we haven't really talked a

2:08:13

lot about three-minute warning. Any good three-minute warning stories you

2:08:15

can share with us? Whew,

2:08:19

probably none that we can tell on the show.

2:08:22

No, you know, we lost Rosie not

2:08:24

long ago and he was probably one

2:08:26

of the, you know how you

2:08:30

had the gentle giants that

2:08:33

when you get to know them are like the nicest

2:08:35

guy in the world, that's the

2:08:37

way Rosie was. Now Jamal on the other side

2:08:41

was sane,

2:08:44

but it was, they

2:08:46

were just both so nice

2:08:48

but portrayed the biggest, meanest,

2:08:50

nastiest bastards on the face

2:08:52

of the earth. And

2:08:56

they were just a lot of fun, man, but yeah, we

2:08:59

had a lot of fun back in the day out

2:09:01

in the bars and whatnot. On March

2:09:03

24th, RVD and Kane beat the Dudley's

2:09:05

in a number one contender match for

2:09:07

the tag titles and the following week

2:09:09

on the 31st, RVD and Kane actually

2:09:11

win the titles, taking on

2:09:14

the Dudley's and Morley and Storm. And the

2:09:16

stipulation of the match is if RVD and

2:09:18

Kane lost, they have to join Bischoff's stable.

2:09:21

RVD would pin Morley after the five

2:09:23

star frog splash and then they start

2:09:25

defending their titles mostly against the Dudley's

2:09:27

on the house shows. At

2:09:30

backlash, Chief Morley was the ref when RVD

2:09:32

and Kane beat the Dudley's to retain the

2:09:34

titles and Kane hit Bubba with a

2:09:36

choke slam and then RVD followed with a

2:09:39

five star for the pin. RVD

2:09:41

preferred Devon. So Devon was

2:09:43

the nicer of the Dudley's. That seems like

2:09:45

a common thing we hear in wrestling. I

2:09:47

was just going to say everybody preferred Devon. He

2:09:50

was the nicer of the Dudley. He is

2:09:52

the nicer of the Dudley. I

2:09:54

still love Bubba but still Devon's

2:09:57

definitely the nicer of the Dudley. next

2:10:00

night on Raw, RVD and Kane beat Flair

2:10:02

and Triple H to retain the titles. When

2:10:04

Nash came out and chased Triple H away,

2:10:07

that allowed Kane to hit Flair with

2:10:09

the choke slam and then the five-star

2:10:11

splash for the pin. Here's a fun little

2:10:13

match that a lot of people forget about. On

2:10:15

May 12th... Wait a minute, RVD and then beat

2:10:17

Triple H? No, they beat Rick Flair. Right, when

2:10:19

then Triple H? No, when the pin happened... The

2:10:21

tag team? Triple H was in the back. Triple

2:10:23

H called you Kevin Nash. It was his team.

2:10:25

He didn't lay down. May

2:10:28

12th, RVD beat the Legion of Doom

2:10:30

to retain the titles. That's kind of

2:10:32

fun because the LOD is a surprise

2:10:35

opponent here and Kane choke

2:10:37

slams them and... Hawk

2:10:39

rather, and then of course the

2:10:41

five-star comes down from Rob. What

2:10:43

leads to the Road Warriors coming back for this night

2:10:45

here? A special night and

2:10:48

kind of a nostalgia night and

2:10:50

see what we had there and

2:10:52

unfortunately it wasn't a whole lot

2:10:54

at that point in their career. Judgment

2:10:57

Day 2003 goes down on May

2:10:59

18th and RVD's in the battle

2:11:01

royal crown a new Intercontinental Champion,

2:11:04

Christian, gets the nod. RVD

2:11:06

and Kane start working with Law Resistance on

2:11:08

the house shows and that leads to a

2:11:10

bad blood paper view where Law Resistance

2:11:12

actually win the tag team titles.

2:11:15

During the match, RVD accidentally lands on

2:11:17

Kane which allowed them to get the

2:11:19

pin. I'd like

2:11:21

to make some jokes here but I'll let you take it

2:11:23

from here. Well,

2:11:26

no. It was, you know,

2:11:28

Vince had this thing about Law

2:11:31

Resistance and the French

2:11:33

Canadian connection there.

2:11:37

Two young guys, you know, the money was, in

2:11:40

my opinion, in René Dupri and I think

2:11:42

that he had a big upside but I

2:11:45

think that he came in way too damn

2:11:47

young and naive but I

2:11:49

think that René probably had a big

2:11:51

upside that we never ever got to

2:11:53

see. RVD

2:11:56

starts working house show matches for the world

2:11:58

title against Triple H. You know what? happens

2:12:00

triple H beats the fuck out of him every

2:12:02

time on June 23rd on true triple

2:12:05

H be Oh Robin damn won the world title there

2:12:07

no he didn't meet the fuck out of them though

2:12:10

triple you matches and they're working together on top

2:12:12

triple H beat Kane and

2:12:14

a stipulation here on June 23rd

2:12:16

if Kane loses he has to

2:12:18

unmask so after the

2:12:21

match triple H attacks came from

2:12:23

behind RVD comes out and

2:12:25

Kane ends up unmasking and

2:12:27

then choke slamming RVD which

2:12:30

essentially breaks up their team and turns them

2:12:32

heal I know we're gonna talk

2:12:34

about this in a Kane episode but since RVD

2:12:36

was here let's switch gears for a minute why

2:12:39

was the decision made to finally have Kane

2:12:42

unmask and what can you tell us about

2:12:44

his look that night with what

2:12:46

you did with his eyes and his hair well

2:12:49

the idea was to get to a

2:12:52

Kane and an RVD storyline the Vince

2:12:54

wanted to get the mask off of

2:12:56

Kane felt that we had done all

2:12:58

that we could with the masked red

2:13:00

big red machine underneath the

2:13:02

mask and wanted to take the mask off of

2:13:05

him the idea behind what

2:13:07

Kane was going to look like

2:13:10

was mine and I

2:13:12

asked Glenn to to shave

2:13:14

his head in inches portions and I

2:13:16

go back to the to the

2:13:19

Mick Foley when Mick Foley

2:13:21

originally came in as mankind and had parts of

2:13:23

his head shaved or it looked like he was

2:13:25

picking his hair because if you

2:13:27

look and again goes back to Mike Tyson

2:13:29

too you see the part in

2:13:31

Mike Tyson's hair that's from him picking the

2:13:33

hair out of his head you know

2:13:36

that was what we tried to do with mankind

2:13:38

and here with Kane I wanted like portions

2:13:41

of his of

2:13:43

his hair to be gone like it just fell

2:13:45

out he was wearing this wig and the mask

2:13:47

to cover up the deformity and

2:13:49

all the the makeup was makeup that he wore

2:13:51

every night he always had the black under his

2:13:54

eyes just to kind of hide

2:13:56

his face as it were but it

2:13:59

looked like it was gonna be a little bit of a mess. good for that night

2:14:01

and Glenn, you know, having to live with it

2:14:03

and I understood it. Wasn't comfortable

2:14:05

with it beyond that. And

2:14:08

we decided to shave his head

2:14:10

just to

2:14:12

appease him. On

2:14:15

the June 30th, raw, they have a no

2:14:17

DQ world title match where RVD is

2:14:19

the challenge triple H again. Well,

2:14:22

I guess what happens. Triple

2:14:25

H fucking beat him. Uh,

2:14:27

then RVD. After flair hits him with the belt.

2:14:30

Yeah, still. Okay. Cool. Yeah. Uh,

2:14:32

in the end, uh, Robin Demelos,

2:14:35

triple H one Latin last first

2:14:37

time is the first. Uh,

2:14:39

so, so you're upset that RVD is in a

2:14:41

top in a top program. I'm sure

2:14:43

it's fine. I'm sure it's great. I like

2:14:46

it. RVD is working out

2:14:48

and job money being in a top program with top

2:14:50

guy. Yeah. All right. It's great for everybody. That's great

2:14:52

for everybody. It really is. Uh,

2:14:55

RVD starts working out shows with test after this,

2:14:57

and he actually has a couple of matches where

2:14:59

he teams with Kevin Nash, just so triple H

2:15:01

can beat him again. Um,

2:15:04

on July 21st, RVD

2:15:06

takes on Kane. They go to a no

2:15:09

contest and Kane comes to the ring and

2:15:11

shackles and RVB runs to

2:15:13

the ring and kicks Kane outside

2:15:15

for a big dive before the bell. And,

2:15:18

uh, man, this thing is wild. Even

2:15:21

Linda McMahon comes out to try to stop it

2:15:23

and Kane grabs her by the throat. Lawler

2:15:25

runs over to make the save and

2:15:28

Kane knocks him and everyone else down

2:15:30

and then Kane tombstone Linda on the

2:15:32

stage. How great is this? Well,

2:15:35

and no, the best

2:15:37

part about that entire scenario

2:15:39

was as many

2:15:42

times as we had gone over it during the day

2:15:45

and we

2:15:47

had a specific cut and specific way to

2:15:49

shoot that and Vince being

2:15:52

absolutely irate at gorilla because

2:15:54

they screwed up the shot

2:15:56

and God damn it. And

2:16:03

everybody's sitting there, but we're concerned

2:16:05

about Linda. We're concerned. Okay. Is

2:16:08

Linda okay? And we knew Kane

2:16:10

Hatter, but Vince's outburst over the

2:16:12

way that was shot was absolutely

2:16:14

monumental. Raw

2:16:18

on August 18th in Grand Rapids was

2:16:20

worth mentioning, man, Christian and RVD got

2:16:22

to a no contest because RVD hits

2:16:24

the five star and then Kane comes

2:16:27

down. So RVD dives through the ropes

2:16:29

at him, but Kane hits him with a

2:16:31

chair and knocks him out and then carries

2:16:33

him to the back, handcuffs him, pours

2:16:36

gasoline on him, and then

2:16:38

lit a match threatening to set RVD on

2:16:40

fire. And Kane says he's not

2:16:42

going to do it because that's what they want him

2:16:44

to do. From now on,

2:16:46

he does what he wants to do. And he

2:16:49

just walks away, leaving RVD handcuffs

2:16:51

with a towel in his mouth covered

2:16:53

in gasoline. And

2:16:55

Rob says that you were directing this and

2:16:58

he wanted him to scream when Kane was

2:17:00

pouring the gasoline on him. Like he was

2:17:02

scared for his life. But

2:17:04

when you guys are shooting it, you

2:17:06

would say cut because you wanted Rob to act like

2:17:08

he was going to die. And allegedly he came

2:17:11

over to Rob and said, Rob, you're acting. Well,

2:17:14

it's the shit. What do you remember

2:17:16

of this? It was a shit. The

2:17:19

whole scenario was a shit. Um,

2:17:22

we're trying to make the best out of it. And

2:17:24

when I'm walking through it and

2:17:26

we're going through the whole thing and Rob's

2:17:28

handcuffed to this pipe hanging there, it just,

2:17:33

it just fell. And

2:17:36

then Kane came in and he

2:17:39

had the, he had the lighter and put it

2:17:41

up to Rob's mouth and that's where Rob just

2:17:43

kind of blows, he's running through

2:17:45

it and he's got the fire in front of his face. And Rob

2:17:47

just goes and

2:17:50

blows, blows the fire out. I'm

2:17:52

like, okay, that doesn't work.

2:17:55

So to appease it all that's why we

2:17:57

put the towel, the stuff in

2:17:59

his mouth. so that he couldn't blow

2:18:01

it out and also he didn't have to

2:18:03

yell and scream and then we

2:18:06

had him beat down so that he Really

2:18:08

couldn't fight doing it and just had Kane

2:18:10

kind of cutting the promo to

2:18:12

a limp Dead body

2:18:14

of RVD there and I think

2:18:17

that it worked out in the end, but it was

2:18:19

hilarious Building

2:18:21

up to and just trying to get through you

2:18:23

know They envisioned one thing when they write it

2:18:26

and then you get there and you try

2:18:28

and and shoot it and present it And

2:18:30

it just doesn't work sometimes so

2:18:32

we made it we made do with what we had August

2:18:37

24th and 03 in Phoenix

2:18:40

This is summer slam and it's no holds

2:18:42

barred and Kane is gonna beat RVD with

2:18:44

a tombstone on the ringside stairs for the

2:18:46

win Two and a quarter stars.

2:18:48

What do you remember about this summer slam match?

2:18:51

well, I want to say this was

2:18:54

their first big match on pay-per-view and I Thought

2:18:57

it was pretty damn good Again,

2:18:59

you know RVD getting out there and it

2:19:01

was another example where people were going. Okay,

2:19:03

I Thought it was a

2:19:05

good showing on everybody's part Let's

2:19:09

fast-forward to unforgivens September 21st

2:19:11

we see a triple threat

2:19:14

Christian beats RVD and Jericho Christian

2:19:16

blocks a five-star splash with a

2:19:18

chair and then scores the pin

2:19:20

three stars What do you

2:19:22

remember about this one if anything? You

2:19:25

know what I really don't remember a whole lot about

2:19:27

that one. So Next

2:19:30

I don't know they

2:19:32

did a ladder match a couple of weeks later on September

2:19:35

29th and it's

2:19:37

an intercontinental title here and we're

2:19:39

gonna see RVD actually beat Christian to win

2:19:41

the intercontinental title and Rob's

2:19:44

always put Christian over saying he's very creative

2:19:46

and by the time they ever they ever sat down

2:19:49

and talk about a match Christian had already visualized a

2:19:51

lot of the match and And

2:19:53

was easy to sort of put stuff together with

2:19:55

this Christian one of the more

2:19:57

unsung heroes of just putting matches

2:19:59

together I used to

2:20:01

say about Christian that he was the best

2:20:03

damn pure worker in the business and He

2:20:08

could work with anybody and make it look damn good

2:20:11

So he is one of one of the

2:20:13

big unsung heroes in business doesn't get enough

2:20:15

credit He

2:20:19

starts working house shows he being RVD

2:20:21

pronouns pal and

2:20:23

he's working these pronouns pal matches

2:20:26

with Randy Orton on house shows

2:20:28

and allegedly

2:20:30

Randy got some heat because

2:20:34

He did a corner post during one of the matches

2:20:36

and he got knocked out and Rob

2:20:38

was able to sort of carry him through The rest

2:20:40

of the match, but allegedly Rob

2:20:43

got on myspace not Rob Randy got

2:20:46

on myspace and thanked Rob for taking

2:20:48

care of him and Allegedly got

2:20:50

a little bit of heat for breaking kayfabe Can

2:20:53

you tell us about the sort

2:20:55

of the early infancy days of social

2:20:57

media or guys would sort of? Maybe

2:21:01

share a little too much. Yeah,

2:21:03

I think especially with the younger

2:21:05

talent. They didn't know and

2:21:10

For us older guys that didn't really

2:21:12

understand social media to the extent that

2:21:14

we do now like I really understand

2:21:16

it but times

2:21:19

were a-changing and the

2:21:21

fact that you could Immediately

2:21:23

correspond and go back and forth with People

2:21:27

on this damn thing called the internet. Well,

2:21:29

it was still new for us and it

2:21:31

was in its infancy. So For

2:21:35

somebody to do that. They didn't really understand

2:21:37

and we didn't know how to use it

2:21:39

to our advantage And

2:21:42

so yeah, I can see people going in and

2:21:44

hey really? Oh What'd

2:21:46

you say on that? on

2:21:49

that mygram We're

2:21:51

in some space face

2:21:53

page So

2:21:57

they just didn't understand it October

2:22:00

27th, they're in North Carolina and

2:22:02

Jericho beat RVD for the IC

2:22:04

title and Jericho had RVD

2:22:06

in the walls of Jericho, but Bischoff

2:22:08

ran down and distracted the ref when

2:22:10

RVD reached the ropes. So

2:22:12

Jericho pulls him back to the center and

2:22:14

RVD taps out. But Austin,

2:22:16

who's the co GM, comes out and

2:22:19

restarts the match and then RVD wins

2:22:21

and regains the title. I

2:22:23

bring this up because this is actually the second time

2:22:25

in his career that he's lost the title and then

2:22:27

won it back a few minutes later on Raw. I

2:22:29

didn't know one and now again here, you

2:22:32

don't see that very often, but it's sort of fun

2:22:34

to think about in hindsight. Well

2:22:36

that was, you know, that was my

2:22:38

idea. I said, Hey, what if RVD's

2:22:40

gimmick becomes he wins titles back like

2:22:42

the same night? No,

2:22:45

not buying it. Well I

2:22:48

mean, I know Triple H didn't come up with

2:22:50

the idea. So I'll give you credit for it. Let's

2:22:52

go to survivor series. Oh, I got talka,

2:22:55

which is still one of the best lines from the

2:22:57

show. Jim Austin, RVD

2:23:00

Booker T, Shawn Michaels, and the

2:23:02

Dudley's are taking on team Bischoff,

2:23:04

Randy Orton, Chris Jericho, Christian Schifdiner,

2:23:07

and Mark Henry. RVD

2:23:09

eliminates Henry and then has eliminated himself

2:23:11

by Orton and Orton is the eventual

2:23:14

winner of the match. And

2:23:16

because of the stipulations, Austin lost

2:23:18

his co GM job on Raw.

2:23:21

The next night RVD gets a win over

2:23:23

Flair by DQ. Let's

2:23:25

fast forward a little bit. He

2:23:27

worked on Raw with Goldberg and

2:23:29

Shawn Michaels against Kane, Orton, and

2:23:31

Batista. And Rob says

2:23:33

he always thought that Goldberg was way

2:23:36

cool, cooler than he was expecting. And

2:23:38

he'd heard a lot of shit talk about him. But

2:23:41

once he actually got to meet him, he thought

2:23:43

it was pretty cool. And

2:23:45

Goldberg was very kind to him and said that he'd

2:23:47

heard a lot about him and he was a big

2:23:49

fan. Was

2:23:51

Rob sort of in the minority with this opinion

2:23:53

of Goldberg here at the time? Well,

2:23:57

again, I think that

2:23:59

Bill had a one kind

2:24:01

of persona and Bill in the

2:24:04

wrestling genre and the wrestling environment

2:24:07

did give off a negative vibe. I

2:24:09

know people, really good friends of mine

2:24:11

that know Bill and are friends with

2:24:13

Bill in the race

2:24:15

car world and in the car

2:24:17

business that talk about Bill being

2:24:19

the sweetest guy and the greatest

2:24:21

guy that they've ever met. So

2:24:24

when you take Bill Goldberg, the human being,

2:24:26

you take him out of where he was

2:24:28

at that time in the business, I'm

2:24:31

sure he was a great guy. The experience

2:24:33

while he was there, he was miserable. He

2:24:35

even said that at the Hall of Fame.

2:24:37

He was miserable while he was there during

2:24:39

the first run and didn't really know how

2:24:41

to react and we all didn't

2:24:43

know how to react and probably it was

2:24:45

negative. But I think

2:24:47

given the chance, I'm sure

2:24:49

Bill's a great guy. Let's

2:24:54

talk about it. Armageddon, December 14th,

2:24:56

Mick Foley's the ref and

2:24:59

Orton beats Rob to win the

2:25:01

Intercontinental title. Orton's still very

2:25:03

young in his career and he's

2:25:06

the IC champ now and a match against

2:25:08

two and three quarter stars. What

2:25:11

was the hope for Randy Orton here in late

2:25:13

03? Man,

2:25:17

Randy Orton, I used to refer to him as the

2:25:19

future. I

2:25:21

just saw Randy Orton. He was an

2:25:23

absolute natural in the ring from

2:25:26

day one in Ohio

2:25:28

Valley. The first time I saw Randy, he was

2:25:30

like, damn, the kid had it. He

2:25:33

had a swagger when he walked into the

2:25:35

room. He carried what he, you

2:25:37

can tell when a guy gets in the ring, man, what

2:25:39

they have and if they belong there or not. Randy

2:25:42

Orton owned the ring. He

2:25:44

was the future. And at this

2:25:46

point in time, we were looking at him

2:25:48

a lot of ways in how we looked

2:25:51

at Dewey Johnson back in the day as

2:25:53

man, that guy's going to be the future. Let's

2:25:57

talk about it. December is over. and

2:26:00

we're into January. January 5th, there's

2:26:02

a number one contender match for

2:26:05

the Intercontinental title. RVD

2:26:07

earns the honor beating Mark Henry in

2:26:09

the process and then the

2:26:11

very next week, Orton beats him. Let's

2:26:13

get to the Royal Rumble. RVD comes

2:26:15

in at number 29. As

2:26:18

soon as he comes in, Triple H pedigrees him

2:26:20

through... No, he didn't. He didn't eliminate

2:26:22

anybody. He's eliminated by the big

2:26:24

show. Again, I don't know why

2:26:26

this is fun to me but I guess he just

2:26:28

felt like shorter is better and he's always right out

2:26:30

of there. February

2:26:33

is better. No doubt. You get paid the

2:26:35

same. Fuck it. Let's go. He

2:26:37

starts teaming with Booker T on

2:26:39

February 16th and allegedly these guys

2:26:41

were already riding together and got

2:26:43

along really well. Any fun Booker

2:26:45

T, Rob Van Damme stories you

2:26:48

can share? No,

2:26:50

not off the top of my head but the reason that

2:26:52

Booker T and Rob Van Damme became a team was

2:26:55

because they were friends out of the ring.

2:26:57

They had good chemistry. They always hung out

2:26:59

together and I want to say

2:27:01

I think it was Book who actually suggested

2:27:03

it that they team together

2:27:06

because well they were a team. So

2:27:09

when two guys get along outside of the ring, usually

2:27:12

have good chemistry inside the ring and that's why

2:27:14

we did the tag team with Book and RVD.

2:27:17

WrestleMania 20 goes down in March of

2:27:19

04 and Booker T would team with

2:27:21

Rob Van Damme to beat Law Resistance

2:27:23

and Garrison Cade and Mark

2:27:25

Jindrach and the Dudley's and they retain

2:27:27

the tag titles in the process here.

2:27:30

The problem with these four

2:27:32

team matches is sometimes they're just

2:27:35

big fucking schmazas. I

2:27:37

guess we should mention Booker T and

2:27:39

RVD when they debuted as a tag they

2:27:42

won the titles right away beating Flair

2:27:44

and Batista in the process. Killer

2:27:47

would say this WrestleMania match though with all four

2:27:49

teams is just okay. Gives it a star in

2:27:51

three-quarters. It is sort of hard to put four

2:27:53

tag teams in there like this, is it right?

2:27:56

It was fucking awful. awful.

2:28:01

Matt, you had two

2:28:04

green teams, a lot of resistance

2:28:06

in Cade and Gendrak in

2:28:09

there with four pros. It

2:28:11

just was a hodgepodge that didn't

2:28:14

work and it, okay,

2:28:16

it sucked. Sorry. But we

2:28:18

did it to get everybody, you know, give them

2:28:20

more guys on the card and give them a

2:28:23

WrestleMania exposure, but it sucked. Sorry.

2:28:26

I guess we should mention right here that

2:28:28

a week later, Flair and Batista beat RVD

2:28:30

and Booker T to win the tag titles.

2:28:34

And they do a bit of a

2:28:36

split on accidental inadvertent superkick

2:28:39

from RVD to Booker T. That

2:28:43

same night, Rob is then drafted

2:28:45

to SmackDown. So the old Mr.

2:28:47

Monday night is now on SmackDown.

2:28:50

RVD was sort of freestyle that he felt

2:28:52

like this is because of who was writing

2:28:54

SmackDown at the time and who

2:28:56

his friends were at the time.

2:28:59

Why do you think that Rob Van Dam

2:29:01

wound up at SmackDown here and they broke

2:29:03

apart the team here of

2:29:06

Booker T or seemingly that was the

2:29:08

plan? To change

2:29:10

things up a little bit. And that was

2:29:12

the only reason. Rob had been on Raw

2:29:15

for a while and wanted to change

2:29:17

things up. And I believe Paul, Paul

2:29:19

was on SmackDown and Paul did want

2:29:21

Rob and felt that he could write.

2:29:23

I can do better for Rob than you

2:29:25

guys are because I know better, but it

2:29:28

was just change things up. New faces.

2:29:31

It's sort of fun though that Rob

2:29:33

still owns Mr. Monday night, but when

2:29:35

he comes to SmackDown, WWE starts having

2:29:37

him call himself Mr. Thursday night and

2:29:39

they own that name, which I think

2:29:41

is fun. Booker

2:29:43

T is drafted to SmackDown and they started

2:29:45

feud when Booker walked out on him during

2:29:48

a tag match and they have matches

2:29:51

on April 13th and April 20th. And

2:29:53

then he starts the team with Rey

2:29:55

Mysterio. And I don't know why, but I've always

2:29:57

found it fun to just go back and look at

2:29:59

some of his. tag team partners were through the

2:30:01

years, you know, Jerry Lawler, Ray

2:30:04

Mysterio, Booker T, Kane, set

2:30:06

some high profile tag opponents

2:30:08

here. Um, their

2:30:10

match is, uh, is always good on

2:30:12

the house shows. It's getting really great

2:30:14

reviews, especially when they're working the Dudley's

2:30:17

and then they're back in singles action

2:30:19

come June 27th at the great American

2:30:21

bash, he's in a fatal four way

2:30:23

elimination match for the US title, this

2:30:26

time with Booker T, Renee, do

2:30:28

free and the champion. John Cena.

2:30:31

Let me run through that list again. We've

2:30:33

got Rob Van Dam, John Cena,

2:30:35

Booker T and Renee do free.

2:30:38

You know, I learned this game as a kid, which

2:30:40

one of these is not like the other. Uh,

2:30:44

why you gotta, why you gotta be like

2:30:46

that? Um,

2:30:48

star and three quarters, according to

2:30:50

Wade Keller, of course, John Cena

2:30:52

is victorious, but Keller

2:30:54

would right here, Cena is still

2:30:56

missing something. What'd you think

2:30:58

of the match? You

2:31:01

know, the match itself wasn't great. Um,

2:31:05

I don't know what Cena was missing. He had

2:31:07

the charisma and he had it. So it was

2:31:09

just, it was the beginning of the build for

2:31:12

John, but the match. Okay. Matt's kind of stunk.

2:31:15

July 6th on smack down, Rob beat

2:31:17

Mark Jindracked. Bruce, what's your favorite Mark

2:31:19

Jindracked match? His last one. Listen

2:31:23

to you. Uh, Sunday

2:31:25

night heat on August 15th, this is the

2:31:27

Sunday night heat right before summer slam. So

2:31:30

of course Rob's on that and not summer

2:31:32

slam and he beats Renee do free.

2:31:35

What's the thinking here? You got one of your

2:31:37

most over guys and he's not even on summer

2:31:39

slam. Uh, well, I guess

2:31:41

you'd have to ask his, his writer that was writing for

2:31:43

him at the time, Paul Heyman. Um,

2:31:46

not everybody could be

2:31:49

on summer slam. Somebody's gotta, you know,

2:31:52

be on heat and he could have not been on

2:31:54

the card at all. No

2:31:56

mercy is October 3rd and the world tag

2:31:59

team titles are. online when

2:32:01

Kenzo Suzuki seeming with Renee, do free

2:32:03

to beat Rob Van Dam and Ray

2:32:05

Mysterio. I want to say that again.

2:32:08

Kenzo Suzuki and Renee, do free

2:32:10

beat Rob Van Dam and Ray

2:32:12

Mysterio in nine minutes. Um,

2:32:15

a star and a quarter who

2:32:18

booked this ship Bruce. Woo.

2:32:21

I did. Um,

2:32:26

Vince was in love with Kenzo Suzuki.

2:32:29

Big guy. Asian.

2:32:37

Big guy. Uh,

2:32:39

his wife was nice looking. Asian.

2:32:49

I mentioned he was big and Asian

2:32:52

and Asian. That

2:32:54

damn bell had to ring though. And

2:32:57

we tried man. We tried.

2:32:59

This was an example of

2:33:01

taking two people with

2:33:03

a lot of potential potentially. Hear

2:33:06

that Kenzo and Renee and

2:33:09

put him in with two workers in

2:33:11

RVD and Ray to help.

2:33:15

Get them over but man. Uh,

2:33:20

Kenzo was bad. Kenzo

2:33:22

was bad and we kept trying to,

2:33:25

you know, get him over, try

2:33:27

to put him in a position where people would care

2:33:30

and no one gave a shit.

2:33:34

He just, it

2:33:36

wasn't there. It just wasn't there, but we tried

2:33:38

like hell and Paul

2:33:41

Heyman would say some must die

2:33:43

so others can live. There

2:33:47

we go. Survivor

2:33:50

Series 04 John Cena, Eddie

2:33:52

Guerrero, Rob Van Dam and Big

2:33:54

Show beat angle, Luther reigns, Mark

2:33:56

Jindrack and Carlito cool. Cena

2:33:59

does. almost nothing in the match, but,

2:34:02

um, angle is pinned by show after

2:34:04

a scene, our F you, and then

2:34:06

the Guerrero frog splash. And,

2:34:09

uh, there's your win three quarters of

2:34:11

a star, sort

2:34:13

of an interesting deal, but a fairly

2:34:15

forgettable pay-per-view. Wouldn't you agree? Absolutely.

2:34:20

And, and again, you know, it's a rebuilding

2:34:22

time where we were trying to bring new

2:34:24

young guys up and stick them in the

2:34:26

mix and, and trying

2:34:28

to build, you know, just trying to get

2:34:30

guys in the mix, new people as

2:34:34

an adult. Don't we all miss spring break?

2:34:36

Nothing like taking a week off from all

2:34:38

your responsibilities. Well, here's the next best thing

2:34:40

for adults. A spring break from house payments

2:34:42

save with conrad.com can help you get rid

2:34:44

of all your credit card debt, just like

2:34:46

that. We're routinely helping our listeners say five,

2:34:48

six, seven, even 800 bucks a month. And

2:34:51

you don't need perfect credit or money out of

2:34:53

your pocket to do this, but check this out.

2:34:55

No house payments for two months. It's save with

2:34:58

conrad.com. And I'm a

2:35:00

less number three, two, four one six equal housing lender.

2:35:02

Save with conrad.com. I

2:35:06

guess that was a good time to, uh, bring

2:35:09

some entertainment to the podcast because I feel

2:35:11

like we're just beating up on old poor

2:35:13

Rob here and his experience, but there's

2:35:15

a pretty famous story where you guys were going

2:35:17

to do the tribute to the troops and

2:35:21

it said, since there is a war

2:35:23

zone, but it's voluntary and you

2:35:25

don't have to go. So Rob

2:35:27

decides cool. I'm not going. I'm

2:35:29

taking my 10 days off. Allegedly

2:35:32

he's burned out. Once the time

2:35:34

off wants to recharge his batteries and

2:35:37

really has no interest in flying to a

2:35:39

war zone. And then right

2:35:42

before the time off was ready

2:35:44

to hit. And he's finally here at vacation.

2:35:47

Johnny ACE has a meeting and tells everyone

2:35:49

about the trip and said it's voluntary, but

2:35:52

everyone's expected to go. And

2:35:55

then Rob told John, he wasn't going. So John told

2:35:57

him to talk to the guys because some of the.

2:35:59

them have a great time when they

2:36:02

go and it ends up leading to a talk

2:36:04

with Vince. And Rob tells him he

2:36:06

was looking forward to the time off and he wasn't going to

2:36:08

go. And

2:36:10

Vince said, well, Rob, I appreciate that. And Rob

2:36:12

said, okay, cool. And Vince

2:36:14

said, I think you'll enjoy the trip. And

2:36:17

Rob says, I just told you I'm not going. And

2:36:20

Vince said, don't be so hasty. I think you should

2:36:22

talk to the guys. Some of them love going. And

2:36:25

Rob said after the meeting, literally

2:36:28

everyone came up to him and

2:36:31

said things like, I wish I could say no like

2:36:33

you. And he says, what do you mean? He can

2:36:35

say no. You have the right to

2:36:37

anything. You can say no. And

2:36:40

he kept saying no. And the office is not

2:36:42

accepting that he doesn't want to go. And

2:36:45

it leads to a point to where Rob decides to talk

2:36:47

to Vince right after the

2:36:49

show's ended. And he remembers waiting for

2:36:51

Vince. He's getting angrier and

2:36:54

angrier. And he's

2:36:56

decided that he's willing to accept any

2:36:58

consequences. If Vince wants to

2:37:00

fire him, suspend him, whatever, he's ready

2:37:02

to accept it. But

2:37:04

he's upset that Vince feels like he

2:37:06

has so much power over him to

2:37:09

the point that he can make him go, even if he says

2:37:11

he doesn't want to go. And

2:37:14

he even considers, allegedly, asking Vince

2:37:16

if he wants to play pick

2:37:18

a hand. And at

2:37:20

least in his mind is mentally preparing,

2:37:23

what would happen if I slapped the shit

2:37:25

out of Vince McMahon? Certainly I would be

2:37:27

fired. And eventually the

2:37:30

location is moved to a

2:37:32

less secure location. So

2:37:34

the voluntary became very voluntary.

2:37:37

And during another meeting with John, addressing

2:37:41

this location change. And

2:37:44

he says in front of everyone, Rob,

2:37:46

I know you're not going. Tell

2:37:49

me about the tributes to the troops thing,

2:37:51

which really grew to be one of the

2:37:53

more legendary backstage things with Rob Van Dam.

2:37:58

Well pretty much it happened exactly kind of long. like how

2:38:00

you just said it happened and Rob

2:38:02

didn't want to go. He was, he

2:38:05

was adamant. He didn't

2:38:07

want to go to me. The funniest part

2:38:09

was as voluntary. Oh, guys,

2:38:11

this is totally voluntary. However, you

2:38:14

are expected to go and, uh,

2:38:17

you'll be getting your tickets to show up and we're going to

2:38:19

take a big aircraft carrier

2:38:21

over there. Um, but

2:38:23

it was, you know, Vince is very patriotic

2:38:25

and Vince feels like,

2:38:27

you know, you should give back to

2:38:30

your country and felt that it was a pretty

2:38:32

cool thing. The tribute to the troops was a

2:38:34

cool thing that a lot of people loved. Not

2:38:38

everybody wanted to do it

2:38:40

and not everybody wanted to

2:38:42

go over and take that trip,

2:38:44

which was on a, you know, it's

2:38:46

on a carrier plane where the

2:38:48

seats don't really recline and you're

2:38:51

on there with all the equipment,

2:38:54

not comfortable at all. And when you

2:38:56

get there, you're sleeping on cots and,

2:38:58

um, it's not a luxurious

2:39:00

trip. However, you're giving back to your country

2:39:02

and you're, you're doing a really good thing.

2:39:04

I volunteered for every trip and never got

2:39:06

to go. So I was pissed off at

2:39:08

that on the other side. So I was

2:39:10

the opposite of Rob. I wanted to go

2:39:12

and I was pissed off that they wouldn't

2:39:14

let me go. And then

2:39:17

we got to the point where it went

2:39:19

to, uh, went to base where it wasn't

2:39:21

going to be the big

2:39:23

show, the way that we had traditionally done it.

2:39:26

And they decided, okay, we don't need to bring

2:39:28

everybody. And so if you don't want to

2:39:30

go, you don't have to, I know you're not Rob,

2:39:33

but yeah, pretty much happened that way. It's

2:39:39

amazing. Um, there

2:39:41

was another meeting around this time where

2:39:44

something was said about not being

2:39:46

able to work out during the

2:39:48

day before TV. And

2:39:51

Rob says, is it okay if we work out in

2:39:53

the morning before we come in? And it

2:39:56

was something that was to make everyone

2:39:58

laugh. And Johnny, kicked him out

2:40:00

of the meeting. And when Rob was walking in the

2:40:02

hall, he saw you and told you that he just

2:40:07

got kicked out of the meeting. Why

2:40:10

did Johnny ACE have a problem with

2:40:12

guys going to work out when they

2:40:14

had to be there at one o'clock anyway, and the show's not

2:40:16

too late. What's the big deal if they go work out? There,

2:40:19

there is no big deal. And that's not

2:40:21

what he said. Johnny was telling guys that

2:40:23

you couldn't leave during the day to go

2:40:25

work out. And Rob

2:40:28

then made the, you know, guys,

2:40:30

you know, TV days, you can't be going off

2:40:32

and going off to work out. Then

2:40:34

Rob made the smart ass comment of, you know, is

2:40:36

it okay if we work out before we get to

2:40:38

TV and Johnny was having a bad

2:40:40

day, um, probably

2:40:43

coming right out of a, an ass shoe and from

2:40:45

Vince and

2:40:47

kicked him out of the

2:40:49

meeting. I remember coming out

2:40:51

because seeing some talent in

2:40:53

the hall. I

2:40:56

knew everybody was supposed to be in a meeting. I

2:40:59

was like, Rob, what the hell are you doing? Oh, Johnny kicked

2:41:01

me out of me. I was like, what did you do? Hey,

2:41:04

he told me, I thought it was funny. I thought

2:41:06

it was an attempt at levity. I thought it was

2:41:08

funny. I would have laughed at it and, uh, just

2:41:10

moved on, but I think Johnny was kind of having

2:41:13

a bad day and, Oh, you could just leave. On

2:41:16

December 28th, Rob and Ray beat Eddie and

2:41:19

Booker to retain the tag titles. And during

2:41:21

the match, RVD and Ray

2:41:23

did a move where Rob would pick Ray

2:41:25

up in an atomic drop position, and

2:41:28

then they both drop a leg. So all

2:41:30

four of their legs do the leg drop

2:41:32

and they called it the four 20 leg drop. And

2:41:35

on commentary Cole explained

2:41:39

the four 20 leg drop is four

2:41:41

legs and their combined shoe sizes. Rob

2:41:44

is a 12 raise an eight. So 20. And

2:41:47

Rob said that Paul came to him and said,

2:41:49

Vince wants to know is that drug reference and

2:41:52

Rob said, no, there's four legs

2:41:54

and our combined shoe size. He wears an eight

2:41:56

and I wear a 12. So

2:41:59

Paul went back and. until Vince that he okayed

2:42:01

it and that's the line they fed Cole. How

2:42:04

fucking great is this? Makes

2:42:06

sense to me. I love

2:42:08

it. Unlike today's 420 isn't it? Similar.

2:42:11

Go ahead. January

2:42:16

of 05, Rob hurts his knee here

2:42:18

when he's teaming with Ray and the

2:42:20

wrestling the Basham brothers. They

2:42:22

go up for a backdrop and something

2:42:25

happened when he landed. He could feel

2:42:27

his ACL snap and it had

2:42:29

been bothering him since 2001, but it was just getting

2:42:32

thinner and thinner and it finally snapped. And he

2:42:35

said when it happened, he couldn't straighten his leg

2:42:37

all the way out and he couldn't bend

2:42:39

on it. It was in a locked position. So

2:42:42

he thought he had to get the surgery and just

2:42:44

go right for it. So of

2:42:46

course he's got to lose the tag titles

2:42:48

and they do that in a fatal four

2:42:51

way match where the Basham brothers win the

2:42:53

titles. And he's out for the entire

2:42:55

year of 05, but

2:42:57

he says that was his favorite year of their career because he

2:42:59

got paid for a whole year to sit at home. He

2:43:02

was completely burned out and

2:43:05

there was just no fun left

2:43:07

in this. So I

2:43:09

guess in a weird way, this January

2:43:11

27th surgery he has for his ACL

2:43:14

and meniscus with Dr. James Andrews is

2:43:16

really a much needed break. How obvious was it

2:43:19

to you that Rob was burned out at this

2:43:21

time? I think

2:43:23

it was obvious to everybody because he

2:43:25

was unhappy and it was just his

2:43:27

pride. Rob

2:43:30

liked his time. Rob liked his time to

2:43:32

himself and he liked to be away from

2:43:34

the business. Rob wasn't all about

2:43:38

being on the road and rah rah the

2:43:40

business 24-7. The

2:43:42

business was a means to an end

2:43:44

or it

2:43:46

wasn't his life, didn't consume him. Something

2:43:50

that I've always been fascinated by is the

2:43:52

way these contracts are written. And

2:43:54

I don't think a lot of people realize this.

2:43:57

Since Rob can't wrestle, he decided

2:43:59

to start making some appearances and

2:44:02

he starts to do the appearances thinking he's going

2:44:04

to pick up some extra money, but

2:44:06

then he finds out that the company

2:44:08

actually counts that against your downside guarantee.

2:44:11

So you can go do these appearances and make the same

2:44:13

amount of money or you can go sit at home and

2:44:15

make the same amount of money. So he just stopped doing

2:44:17

it. Chat me up about

2:44:19

that. Well, no, it's

2:44:22

very clear on the contract that any monies

2:44:24

that are made go against your downside guarantee.

2:44:26

So if there's something that's booked through the

2:44:29

company or you're out earning money, that goes

2:44:31

against your downside guarantee because you're under contract.

2:44:34

It's pretty clear in there. I'm not arguing that,

2:44:36

but the result is rather than have

2:44:38

guys go out and do something, they just sit at

2:44:40

home and do nothing. Some

2:44:43

guys did, some guys didn't, you know, some guys wanted to

2:44:45

go out and do it, but it

2:44:47

was different for everybody. But that,

2:44:50

that was definitely something that they

2:44:52

did often and if guys

2:44:54

couldn't work and they were able to go out and

2:44:56

do something like a, for example,

2:44:59

go do trade shows and things like that, they would

2:45:01

use guys that would be injured to go do that

2:45:03

because they were still getting paid. Allegedly

2:45:08

a lot of folks sort

2:45:12

of take credit for ECW one night stand,

2:45:14

but supposedly Rob is the guy who

2:45:18

first put the bug in Vince's ear about

2:45:20

you've got all these ECW wrestlers on your

2:45:22

roster. Why don't you do an ECW pay-per-view

2:45:25

and I supposedly Paul Heyman gets way into this

2:45:28

and starts pushing for it. And that's how one

2:45:30

night stand came together. But it

2:45:32

all happened just accidentally. Maybe when

2:45:34

Rob Van Dam casually mentions it to

2:45:37

Vince like, man, is that the way you remember? It

2:45:40

is the way I remembered. I remember Rob saying

2:45:42

something, but we'd also done a DVD on

2:45:45

ECW and it did very well.

2:45:47

And the timing of it all

2:45:49

worked out really well as

2:45:53

for Van Dam. You know, he did have

2:45:55

this conversation with Vince and said, Hey, you know, what

2:45:57

if? And that's

2:45:59

a good way to start conversations. RVD

2:46:01

of course makes a surprise appearance at that

2:46:04

show and cuts a tremendous

2:46:06

promo. I mean he gets emotional during

2:46:08

it. It was a

2:46:10

big deal for him to be there, but I'm sure he would

2:46:12

have loved to have had a bigger

2:46:15

part in this, but the injury just

2:46:17

wouldn't allow it. But

2:46:22

that promo also let

2:46:24

everybody know, God, you let him be

2:46:26

him and the son of a bitch

2:46:28

is going to deliver. Don't

2:46:30

try to put words in his mouth. He

2:46:34

says that no one knew what he was going to

2:46:36

say that night and he ran it by Edge before

2:46:38

he went out there and Edge was really the only

2:46:40

one. Does that seem right that

2:46:43

he would be allowed to go out there and cut

2:46:45

a promo and not really run it past anybody? Yeah,

2:46:48

the guys were told to speak from the heart. I

2:46:50

don't know Rob was told that. I wasn't there, but

2:46:52

I was told that, yes. It

2:46:58

was pretty cool because that night he

2:47:00

was back with Fonzie and you had

2:47:03

Sabu, Fonzie and Rob

2:47:05

Van Dam all together again. Was there

2:47:07

ever any consideration to putting them together

2:47:10

like that? Not

2:47:14

really and I

2:47:17

don't know that it was really ever suggested

2:47:19

frankly. I think Fonzie was either out of

2:47:21

the business or doing something else at the

2:47:23

time, but I don't ever remember

2:47:25

it being brought up for the

2:47:27

two of them to be a team coming in at the

2:47:29

time. So back

2:47:33

to what I wasn't even suggesting. I don't know if anybody

2:47:35

ever really thought of it. I

2:47:38

never really understood this. On the January,

2:47:40

I'm sorry, June 27th, Raw, the Intercontinental

2:47:43

Champion Carlito was hosting the first episode

2:47:45

of Carlito Scabana and he

2:47:47

announces that his first guest was the final

2:47:49

draft pick to come to Raw. In

2:47:52

RVD's music, he comes out to a huge

2:47:54

pop, but he's got a knee brace

2:47:56

on and he's wearing an ECW shirt. me

2:48:00

up here. If he's still injured, he's

2:48:02

still six months out. Why

2:48:04

is he here doing this promo? Buzz,

2:48:07

totally unpredictable and people thinking,

2:48:10

Oh, Hey, Rob's back. But just, just

2:48:12

for buzz and for a way to get Carlito

2:48:15

over. Rob

2:48:17

allegedly asked for some more time off

2:48:19

after this and Paul tells him that

2:48:21

Dr. Rios was concerned that Rob might

2:48:23

be milking the injury. Do you

2:48:26

remember hearing that? That maybe there was some rumors

2:48:28

that he was really trying to milk

2:48:30

it or is this Paul stirring it up? Yeah,

2:48:32

I never heard that. And, but

2:48:35

I'll say this too about guys. I

2:48:39

remember, and I'll use Mark Marrow as

2:48:42

an example, Mark Marrow going in and

2:48:44

he had the same injury and Mark

2:48:46

overtrain and came back way too soon

2:48:48

and ended up being out even longer

2:48:50

than if he had just done his

2:48:52

rehab the way he was supposed to

2:48:54

do it and come back in a

2:48:56

reasonable time. So I don't think anybody

2:48:58

was going to Rob saying, Hey, come

2:49:01

back because we had already experienced guys

2:49:03

who rushed their rehab to come back

2:49:05

too soon and ended up being out

2:49:07

a lot longer than if they had

2:49:09

originally just taken their time. So

2:49:11

that one's news to me. I don't remember ever

2:49:13

hearing that during that time and we want to

2:49:16

Rob to come back healthy and a hundred percent.

2:49:21

Let's talk about money in the bank

2:49:23

because that's what we're really headed towards. He's

2:49:26

working with

2:49:28

Carlito on February 6th

2:49:31

on raw and the road to WrestleMania

2:49:33

tournament. He beats Carlito the next

2:49:35

week. He beats Chris masters. There's

2:49:38

a tournament final on more

2:49:40

on February 20th and the Scott

2:49:42

RVD, of course, big show and

2:49:44

Triple H you already know

2:49:46

who won that. And then on

2:49:49

February 27th, there's a qualifying match.

2:49:51

RVD gets a win over Trevor

2:49:53

Murdoch and then on

2:49:55

March 20th, there's a three way

2:49:57

and Benjamin beats RVD and flair

2:50:00

And that all brings us

2:50:02

to April 2nd, WrestleMania and

2:50:05

Rob Van Dam beats Rick Flair, Shelton

2:50:07

Benjamin, Bobby Lashley, Fit Finley, and Matt

2:50:09

Hardy in a Money in the Bank

2:50:12

match. Pretty big moment

2:50:14

here. I think the

2:50:16

highlight, at least for me, is Shelton running

2:50:18

the ladder. What do you

2:50:20

remember about this five-star

2:50:22

frog splash finish

2:50:25

to Money in the Bank?

2:50:27

It got three and a quarter stars. Huge

2:50:31

landmark match for Rob Van Dam

2:50:33

here. It was and I,

2:50:35

you know, the part that I remember most

2:50:37

about this whole match was the debate on

2:50:39

the finish. Who's gonna win Money

2:50:41

in the Bank and what are we gonna do with

2:50:43

it? There was a big

2:50:46

push for Shelton to win and let this

2:50:48

be Shelton's moment to, you know,

2:50:50

step out of the box and put

2:50:52

the shine on Shelton. Bobby

2:50:55

Lashley was a logical look. Just,

2:50:57

man, look at him. Bobby Lashley should

2:51:00

get it. What if

2:51:02

Rick Flair, you know,

2:51:05

out of nowhere, nobody expects it and

2:51:07

Rick Flair's walking around with an opportunity,

2:51:09

one more shot, to

2:51:11

be the WWE Champion. This

2:51:15

could be Rob Van Dam's time. Who would

2:51:17

ever expect Matt Hardy to win the Son

2:51:19

of a Bitch? What if? So everybody in

2:51:22

the match, there

2:51:24

were people fighting for him and the

2:51:26

scenarios kept rolling

2:51:28

over and over and over

2:51:30

again to finally Vince just

2:51:32

saying, RVD it

2:51:35

is. Nobody's gonna call it and

2:51:38

that was it. But it

2:51:40

was a debate up until that weekend as to

2:51:43

who was gonna win Money in the Bank. Let

2:51:46

me encourage everybody to go watch this.

2:51:48

It's a fun match. It's only 12

2:51:50

minutes. WrestleMania 22, it's from April 2nd,

2:51:54

2006. We're gonna cover

2:51:56

it in long form sometime, but go watch this Money

2:51:58

in the Bank match. in the C-Man.

2:52:01

Uh, he's working house shows through the rest

2:52:03

of April against Shelton Benjamin and Matt Stryker

2:52:05

and that gets us to backlash where

2:52:08

he would beat Shelton Benjamin to

2:52:10

become the Intercontinental Champion again. They

2:52:13

have a pretty good match. I was always a Shelton fan.

2:52:15

Glad to see him back doing his thing in the WWE. Three

2:52:19

and a quarter stars here. What'd

2:52:21

you think of RVD's first featured match

2:52:23

back like this and a pay-per-view for

2:52:26

the Intercontinental title with Shelton? I

2:52:28

thought it was great on both parts and I thought it

2:52:30

was another opportunity to really

2:52:33

shine Shelton and show what he could do. Shelton

2:52:36

Benjamin is another one of those

2:52:39

guys that a natural athlete, natural

2:52:41

charisma, maybe missing

2:52:43

it somewhere along the way, but

2:52:47

God, I think that Shelton could have done a

2:52:49

whole hell of a lot more and hopefully he

2:52:51

will in the future. But this was an opportunity

2:52:53

and I thought it shined both guys and put

2:52:55

a spotlight on him in a positive way. It's

2:52:58

worth mentioning here, he's got the money in the

2:53:00

bank briefcase and now he's the Intercontinental Champion. Just

2:53:02

kind of fun. Let's fast forward two

2:53:04

weeks. The WWE title and the Intercontinental

2:53:07

title are on the line when

2:53:09

RVD is teaming with Cena to take

2:53:11

on Triple H, Benjamin and Masters. Benjamin

2:53:14

wins the Intercontinental title by beating

2:53:16

RVD and the next week on

2:53:18

Raw after Cena win over Masters,

2:53:21

RVD comes out and cuts a

2:53:23

tremendous promo announcing that he's cashing

2:53:25

in his contract at One Night

2:53:28

Stand and Raw is going to

2:53:30

be the first man to announce in advance that

2:53:32

he's cashing it in. He winds up hitting Cena

2:53:34

with the Van Damenator with

2:53:36

the briefcase and you guys

2:53:38

were sort of letting him do way more promos

2:53:40

here than he ever had before. Is

2:53:43

this because of the strong promo he had at the prior

2:53:45

One Night Stand, do you think? Yes,

2:53:48

absolutely and they finally got to see

2:53:50

what he could do and if you

2:53:52

let him leave him to his own

2:53:54

devices and let him do what he's

2:53:56

feeling, it works.

2:54:00

29th, they do another draft

2:54:02

on raw and it's already announced

2:54:04

that ECW here is back as the third

2:54:06

brand with Heyman running it his

2:54:08

first two picks are RVD and then

2:54:10

Kurt angle. It's kind

2:54:12

of a fun deal to have RVT RVD

2:54:15

be your first choice. But why angle second?

2:54:17

Of course, we've covered angle and long form

2:54:19

in our archives at something to

2:54:21

wrestle.com and the way he felt about

2:54:23

being drafted here, but what

2:54:25

was the thinking from Vince's side about why

2:54:28

angle was the right guy to go second

2:54:30

here at ECW to give

2:54:32

ECW credibility and

2:54:34

in a shoot, who would you pick? If

2:54:37

he was available, you'd pick

2:54:39

Kurt angle. So it gave

2:54:42

ECW credibility and that's what you do

2:54:45

on the June 5th raw RVD and Cena

2:54:47

are doing a contract signing. And at the

2:54:49

end of it, Paul brings a bunch of

2:54:51

ECW guys from the crowd to the ring

2:54:53

and they beat up Cena. Uh, Sabu goes

2:54:56

down with a chair and then put Cena

2:54:58

through the table before the WV guys come

2:55:00

out. That sets up

2:55:02

WWE versus ECW head to head

2:55:04

where RVD would pin the world

2:55:06

champion, Ray Mysterio. They only

2:55:08

go two minutes here and it was a

2:55:11

non title match, but still told

2:55:13

a fun story about what RVD was

2:55:15

capable of. Um, and

2:55:18

RVD would say he was more inspired that night

2:55:20

than he had been since he was the hardcore

2:55:22

champion. It was sort of fun

2:55:24

to throw the rule book out and just wrestle

2:55:26

the way he wanted to with these old ECW

2:55:29

style rules, but it only got

2:55:31

two stars from way killer. What'd you think

2:55:33

of this head to head match with Ray

2:55:35

Mysterio? Well, I mean,

2:55:37

it, look, uh, it

2:55:39

was good. It told a good story and it told

2:55:41

you the story of what the hell the future

2:55:44

was going to hold and people. It

2:55:47

got buzz. And I think that people were

2:55:50

all of a sudden thinking, okay, because Rob

2:55:52

won this non title match, when you get

2:55:54

to the ECW, he ain't

2:55:56

winning. There's no way that

2:55:59

RVD is. going to beat John Cena. It's

2:56:01

not going to happen. And

2:56:04

guess what happened? It

2:56:07

did happen. And it happened in

2:56:09

a big way at one night stand 2006,

2:56:12

arguably the biggest moment in Rob's career

2:56:14

here, man. It's a big deal. Uh,

2:56:16

June 11th at the Hammerstein ballroom, the

2:56:19

exact same venue as the first

2:56:21

one night stand. I got

2:56:23

21 minutes and an ECW rules match.

2:56:26

And man, the crowd is hot for

2:56:28

this and a big way. If

2:56:30

you haven't seen this, I'm going to encourage you to

2:56:33

go watch it just because of the crowd, man. The

2:56:35

crowd is maybe one of

2:56:37

the most electric crowds in the history

2:56:39

of wrestling. RVD gets this

2:56:41

crowning moment, two and three quarter stars.

2:56:44

Uh, fun little note here that you'll hear one

2:56:47

day, I'm sure from Mr. Heyman, what do you

2:56:49

remember about this match

2:56:51

and the crowd itself? Well,

2:56:54

I was thankful that I wasn't there, but I

2:56:56

did watch it on pay-per-view and I remember just.

2:57:00

You got to appreciate, I mean, you

2:57:03

know, I make fun of ECW all the time.

2:57:05

And, and we all talk about

2:57:07

it in 42. The

2:57:10

audience in the fan base was

2:57:12

just so loyal and so passionate

2:57:15

that they made it fun. And

2:57:17

to me, it's, it's fun when

2:57:19

an audience can take over something like that.

2:57:23

And make you feel that much emotion

2:57:25

through the screen. So from a

2:57:27

viewer sitting at home watching it, I'm, I'm

2:57:30

loving it because that's a

2:57:32

cool atmosphere to work in when you've

2:57:34

got the crowd so

2:57:36

passionate and so one-sided in so

2:57:38

many ways, they were happy to

2:57:40

see their old favorites. They

2:57:43

were happy to see guys that they had grown

2:57:45

up on, um, in

2:57:48

their own environment. So it

2:57:50

was pretty damn neat. As a matter of fact, but

2:57:53

I don't think it was something that could be

2:57:55

sustained. Were you guys surprised

2:57:57

that the reaction scene a guy, I mean, was he ready?

2:57:59

for that, did he know going in that's what it would

2:58:01

be? John did, yeah.

2:58:03

I think John definitely, we were talking about it

2:58:06

the week before TV. John definitely kind

2:58:09

of had a good idea they were gonna shit all

2:58:11

over him. Was

2:58:13

there ever any consideration as to having

2:58:15

Cena actually win the match? Oh

2:58:18

yeah. There was definitely

2:58:20

consideration to having John go over. I

2:58:22

don't think that Vince

2:58:24

being that babyface

2:58:26

mentality, you know, getting

2:58:29

there, you feel that, you see it, there

2:58:32

was no way that he was not going

2:58:34

to have RVD go over because it was

2:58:36

the right moment and the right environment to

2:58:39

put Rob over and maybe doing it in

2:58:41

that environment and people seeing that reaction would

2:58:43

help even more so on the

2:58:45

other side, you know, outside of that ECW brand.

2:58:49

Rob would say this is the standout night in

2:58:51

his career that no other night can compare to.

2:58:54

And a lot of this is really sort of his

2:58:56

idea because he was the guy who sort of put

2:58:58

the bug in Vince's ear by

2:59:00

doing an ECW pay-per-view and the success of

2:59:03

One Night Stand 05 led

2:59:05

to Vince bringing it back here in 06 and

2:59:08

then along the way he had, you know,

2:59:11

stood up to Johnny Ace and then

2:59:13

I had a little

2:59:15

confrontation with Vince about tribute

2:59:17

to the troops and then the leg injury

2:59:19

and a lot of stuff

2:59:21

to overcome here. And

2:59:23

this is the crowning moment. He felt like when, you know,

2:59:26

the referee's hand hit three, we did it because

2:59:29

he never thought that he would be in this spot

2:59:32

because of the politics in the company. He just never

2:59:34

imagined he'd be the world champion, but now here he

2:59:36

was. Was anybody

2:59:38

sort of, we know what's coming, but was

2:59:41

anybody sort of nervous about

2:59:43

Rob Van Dam being the face of the company

2:59:46

or was anybody on board by this point,

2:59:48

especially seeing the reaction here? Yeah,

2:59:51

they were and they were on board to get behind him

2:59:53

100% and push him to the moon. Of

2:59:57

course, RVD carries the spinner belt that...
