My vocabulary feels inadequate to write this review.
I simply cannot get enough of Gyles and Susie. They have such a wonderfully warm and fun chemistry together, backed with some serious nerdery - therefore making it an entirely addictive show, with plenty of things to learn.
There's a reason why this podcast is award-winning! Eavesdropping on the chat between Gyles & Susie every week always means learning something fun about our old language. Thank you for a great podcast.
A show about words may not seem the most entertaining concept but Something Rhymes With Purple is undoubtedly one of the best podcasts around. The duo of Susie Dent and Gyles Brandreth have endearing and natural chemistry, playing off one another as they share their love of language. The show is informative and interesting without being preachy; it never judges dialect or useage but embraces all spoken verbiage, and doesn't patronise listeners who may or may not include terms in their vocabulary. There is a solid format of exploring words that fit in with the weekly theme (theatre, sport, food, etc) before the break, answering listener questions in the second half, and ending with Susie's definition of three lesser-known words and a poem by Gyles. Highly recommended show for anyone wondering with certain words have silent letters or how idioms became part of our everyday vernacular.
Wonderful insightful amd amusing podcast that makes you feel more intelligent but you forget everything!
Recently discovered and wondering how I failed to discover your delightful programme sooner. I have added your podcasts to the list of programs I must not play while driving. A list that includes the Navy Lark and Yes Minister/Prime Minister. I find myself in convulsions of laughter at one moment and lost in tangental thoughts which are perilous to other road users. Gyles and Sussie make an excellent double act. Thank you for providing an antidote to the popular perception that our culture has over recent years been dumbed down.
If you love listening to Susie Dent talk words and Gyles ask her about word origins, this is the pod for you. Absolutely love to play it when I scurryfunge
I love the easy conversation between two hosts and the amount of information packed into every episode. I could go withouth the re-retelling of some stories and anecdotes but in general it's a good pace and an absolute wonder. I love people who are into what they do.
