Small Town Dicks stands out from other true crime podcast because it really stays away from sensationalizing tragedy and is a great platform for talking about the types of crimes. The most interesting episodes were in season 1 about the corrupt officer (The Sociopath and the Whistleblower), which is the only time I've heard the hosts be critical of other officers and acknowledge their inherent bias. But it's increasingly grating every time I hear the officers refer to people as "unredeemable" and their bias against "frequent fliers." They also talk about polygraphs as if they were accurate. I listen to it because it's important to engage with media you don't agree on and the content is interesting. Ultimately, it's an incredibly pro-police, pro-long sentences and clear look into police bias (how they talk about "frequent fliers" vs "nice families".
obsessed. I am obsessed
This is a really good true crime police procedural. The detectives are straight-up and no nonsense, yet with a sense of humor. The cases are interesting and handled with sensitivity for the victims and their families without being maudlin. But. . . the voices of the hosts are HORRIBLE. What is the deal with women in their 30s, 40s, and even older sounding like little girls??? Ugh. It's really bad. They better hope the detectives continue to carry the show or i will stop listening.
Great production value. Yeardley Smith is a beautiful soul and an eager true crime enthusiast. She and the industry professionals that she calls her team/fam, have conversed with some incredibly memorable international Detectives. The best part is when you hear the voice of Lisa Simpson describe some criminal as some sort of particular degenerate. I bet that resonates.
Relatively basic in design, this standardized four-people-at-a-table studio talkshow format can still be a tool of depth and enlightenment. Perhaps not the most intellectually challenging of podcasts, but the very long, free speaking interviews in which their guests are permitted to speak at length of their views and experiences contribute to this enlightenment.Very good sound quality.
This podcast offers some of the best true crime stories and I personally believe that’s because of the realness of it. The reactions seem genuine and the stories are crazy! Especially if you live near a big city, it really makes you wonder if these things happen in small towns, what’s going on there!? It’s truly an eye opener at times too. Many reviews mention how they are upset Zibby is gone, and while I agree what happened between her and Yeardley was upsetting, I find her being gone almost relieving. At times, her and her co-host could ask very ridiculous and painfully obvious questions to the detectives. While I assume this is for listeners who aren’t as aware, it could get annoying. I think one person is more than enough asking those. Other than that, I usually find myself on the edge of my seat. Highly suggest giving this one a try!
I couldn’t quantify how much I love this podcast and wasn’t flippantly going to review it and then I saw the shitty moronic quips about people’s voices and it incensed me. I started listening to Small Town Dicks (in reverse order of release a few months ago) but the most recent and earliest episodes being Stalker, Monster, The Whistleblower and the Sociopath (4!) have been harrowing and so brutally honest from a policing and survivor/ witness perspective. My utmost respect to your team. I’ve choked up on some episodes including the 911 calls for suicides. Det Dan losing his motorcycle officer friend broke my heart. I’ve love hearing Joe Kenda who I’ve watched every episode of Homicide Hunter. I think one episode was referencing working carefully with Cold Justice who I think are so good! I’m sending this message because I’ve listened to every season and Yardley says you love feedback so here it is! Can you please investigate some cases outside your remit? Patrick Clancy….
I have an unquenchable thirst for true crime podcasts... of the hundreds I've either followed or cast aside, there is none finer than Small Town Dicks. It consistently features the most intriguing guests & riveting stories. The format is unique & offers the listener an intimate, human experience. Yeardley Smith has proven to be a most relatable & lovable captain.
The true crime genre is so insanely saturated with shows that it’s hard to find one that does something a little bit different with the format. But boy, let me tell you, this show is something altogether different. With a focus on true crime stories taking place in small town, this show features the ACTUAL detectives from each of the featured crimes. A really terrific addition to the galaxy of true crime podcasts.Looking for 5 hand-picked podcast recommendations weekly? Sign up for my newsletter at FINDTHATPOD.COM
I loved the podcast last year when I found it and binged on every episode. After the season break, Zibby didnt return and it isnt the same. And now I'm seeing everywhere that Zibby was screwed over by Yeardley and was pushed out because of money. I dont know what to think but it isnt the same without Zibby so I'll pass. The episodes this last season have been boring anyway.
As one commenter mentioned, the host sounds like a little girl; maybe because SHE'S THE VOICE OF BART SIMPSON! Anyway, I like this podcast's set up with a walkthrough of the crime with a detective. Some episodes can be a bit boring, and some don't give much insight except for facts. As well, I don't approve of how they kicked Zibby out, and announced it in a pre-season trailer no less, continuing on with the next season without even mentioning it. Shame on them.
I could listen to Yeardley talk about anything.
