0:39
is the new reel. Welcome
0:43
back. I
0:46
told you before. I'm going to relate a couple of pretty
0:48
funny stories that happened to me along my years
0:50
at the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Not
0:53
every call I went to was doom
0:55
and gloom, not every call was a
0:57
homicide. There were plenty
0:59
that were actually hilarious,
1:02
and this is one of them, and it
1:04
was actually funny for both me and
1:07
eventually for the victim of
1:09
this burglary that I went
1:11
to. And here's the story.
1:14
I worked the entire city of Jacksonville,
1:16
which was huge, so I could get a call at the
1:18
beach and then follow up with a call all
1:20
the way across town, so I drove
1:22
quite a bit. And in between all that driving,
1:25
calls would come in and what we would do
1:27
is, whoever was closest to the call, we
1:29
would generally just snatch it from h
1:31
Q when she would put it out over the radio. Well
1:34
that's how I got this call. It was a burglary
1:36
to a restaurant and it was way out
1:38
Atlantic Boulevard, almost to the beach.
1:40
So I drove down Atlantic and on the left
1:42
hand side was this large restaurant
1:45
and I was familiar with it. I had actually been there a few
1:47
times for dinner. So I pulled into the parking
1:49
lot and I see this little
1:51
old man standing there with his
1:53
arms crossed. Clearly, he was pretty
1:55
piste, and I could see immediately
1:58
that the front door had been smashed. The
2:00
glass had been smashed everywhere, and
2:02
I said, hi, sir, I can see you had a break in. Can
2:04
you tell me what happened? And he was just so
2:06
cross, his lips were turned down, and
2:09
he looked at the door and he goes, yeah,
2:11
they broke my front door, the glass and
2:13
they took the tip jar off of the bar. And
2:16
I said anything else, and he goes, now,
2:18
they just took my tip jar. And he goes, yeah, that's
2:20
really expensive for me because I can't put
2:22
it through insurance. It's a brand new
2:24
glass door and all they took was the damn tip
2:27
jar. So there really wasn't a whole
2:29
lot for me to do. So I processed
2:31
what I could, the crossbar on the door,
2:34
the bar, really, that was about
2:36
it. No shoeprints, no nothing, just a bunch
2:38
of broken glass. So I did what I could
2:40
and I left. Two or three days later,
2:43
I hear a call go over the radio
2:45
and it's the same address. And I looked
2:47
at the call on my laptop and I said, you've got to
2:49
be kidding me. Not again. So I said,
2:52
HQ, just send that call to me ten
2:54
four. So I get the screen and sure enough,
2:56
it's the same restaurant. So I drove across
2:58
town to Atlantic Boulevard, pulled in the
3:00
parking lot, and that same man was standing
3:02
there in the exact same spot with the exact
3:04
same expression on his face. So I got
3:06
out of my van and he looked at me, and
3:08
I looked at him and I said, your
3:11
glass got broken again. He goes, yeah,
3:13
and the son of a bit took my tip jar again.
3:16
Okay, so brand new glass door
3:18
took the tip jar and nothing else. He said, no, nothing
3:20
else. They just took the tip jar and I processed
3:23
it again. He was really piste off.
3:25
It was another three out of his wallet. He couldn't
3:27
put it through his insurance, and I said, sir, let
3:29
me give you a piece of advice. Let's
3:32
not leave the tip jar on the counter
3:34
anymore. And he goes, well, I didn't plan to. I'm
3:37
like, okay, all right, just trying to
3:39
help. Two or three days later, sure enough,
3:41
another call came in. I had to laugh
3:43
because I said, HQ, send it to me, and before
3:46
I could finish my sentence, HQ goes ten, sending
3:49
it to you. Drive out, same
3:51
man, same position. Now he's
3:53
smiling. He's looking at me and he's
3:55
actually got a smile on his face. And I thought, oh my
3:57
god, what the hell is going
3:59
on here? So I pulled in, I got out. I
4:02
stood next to my door and I kind of chuckled, and
4:04
he stood there and he kind of chuckled back, and I
4:06
said again and he goes, oh, yeah, yeah,
4:08
they broke my door. And I said, I thought,
4:11
I told you to take the tip
4:13
jar and not leave it on the bar, and he goes, oh,
4:15
I didn't. The tip jar wasn't on the
4:17
bar. I said, okay, what did
4:19
they do this time? He goes, oh, they took the
4:21
fucking Jack Daniels. I
4:24
guess that's one way that trying
4:26
to do some community policing really didn't
4:29
help. They cleaned him out of Jack Daniels.
4:31
I have no idea what happened. I don't
4:33
think we ever caught this person. I'm assuming
4:36
it was probably somebody desperate.
4:38
Alcohol tip jar kind of
4:40
includes maybe somebody that was homeless
4:43
or somebody that was just desperate. Regardless,
4:45
the poor man had to fix his door again. He
4:47
didn't leave the tip jar on the bar, and I think
4:50
he started hiding the liquor behind the bar as well.
4:52
But that was the last call I got. So there's
4:55
one fun story for you, guys. I have one
4:57
more. This was also toward the beaches,
4:59
and it was also a burglary, but it was
5:01
probably the strangest call I've ever had.
5:04
I drive out to this kind of rundown
5:06
apartment complex. So I get there and
5:08
it's a two story building and it's kind
5:10
of a beachy building, beige with like light
5:13
blue doors and light blue trim, and
5:15
I see this dude. And
5:17
I don't know how else to describe this guy.
5:19
But if any of you have seen Fast Times at Ridgemont
5:21
High, I swear to god it was Jeff
5:24
Spicoli in the flesh. It was a surfer
5:26
guy. He had the pooka bee necklace,
5:29
he had the board shorts, flip
5:31
flops, long stringy blonde
5:33
hair, and he was just kind of standing
5:36
there against the building, and I thought, well, maybe
5:38
that's my dude. So I walked over and said, sir, are
5:40
you the one that reported a burglary? And he goes, oh,
5:43
dude, yeah, I came
5:46
home from really righteous
5:48
day on the beach. Somebody
5:51
took my most favorite
5:53
surfboard from inside my living
5:56
room. Well that's that kind
5:58
of sucks. So he walked upstairs
6:00
to a second floor apartment and I could see through the
6:02
living room that he had four or five surfboards
6:05
kind of stacked against the wall in
6:07
there, and there was a big space between them,
6:09
and I thought, well, okay, that's obviously where
6:11
the surfboard was. But I looked at the front door,
6:14
and I looked at the windows that were out front,
6:16
and I said, well, I don't see any signs of forced
6:18
entry. Are you sure that somebody
6:21
came in that you didn't know? If you have a roommate, you
6:23
have somebody that used to live here that maybe had access
6:25
And he goes, no, I
6:27
live here alone. And I
6:30
know that somebody was inside my apartment.
6:33
Okay, how do you know this? And he
6:35
goes, well, let me explain
6:37
my story. Oh, this ought
6:39
to be good. Go ahead. Tell me. I
6:42
am part Native American, and
6:44
because I am part Native American, I
6:47
like feathers. Okay,
6:51
and I leave my feathers that I
6:53
find on the outside
6:56
of my window sill, and you can
6:58
see them here therapeut a full. Yes,
7:01
they are beautiful. Well, I
7:03
had a very special feather that
7:05
was out here on the window sill. And
7:07
when I came home today,
7:10
that feather was not on the
7:12
outside of the window sill. It
7:15
was on the inside. Okay,
7:20
So you're telling me that somebody came in through
7:23
your window and then took your surfboard
7:25
out the window. That's
7:28
my best guess. Okay,
7:32
okay, do you have a backdoor. I
7:34
do, but it's a patio. It would
7:36
be out back. I said, okay, great,
7:39
I'm gonna go trip back there for a second. You
7:41
hang out here. So I walked around back
7:43
of the apartment and I looked up and
7:46
right there, leaning against the back of
7:48
his apartment on the balcony was
7:50
his favorite surfboard. It
7:53
was pink and white. So I walked
7:55
back around and I said, sir, what color
7:57
is your surfboard? Oh? My
8:00
favorite surfboard. It was a
8:02
beautiful off white Gordon and
8:04
Smith with three fins,
8:06
and it had this beautiful pig outline.
8:09
And he starts crying. I
8:12
said, who whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa whoa dude, dude,
8:15
chill, your surfboard is
8:17
on your balcony. What
8:20
my board is on my balcony.
8:23
Oh my god, Oh my god. And he
8:25
goes running through his apartment and
8:27
he finds it on his balcony
8:30
and he comes back and he gives me this huge
8:32
hug. People, I
8:34
thought that dude was gonna blaze up
8:37
right in front of me. He was so happy.
8:39
Yeah, maybe you should lay off the gunge and
8:42
you know, try some water, try some vitamins.
8:46
Jacksonville was an interesting place to work.
8:49
I'll be relating a couple more of these two you guys
8:51
over the next few weeks. Oh and quick
8:53
