Better Call Saul – S3E9 – Fall

The penultimate episode of a season is a good time to ratchet up the tension and point to the themes and interactions that will define the impending finale. “Fall” fits the bill by easing Nacho, Hector, Chuck, and even Howard towards specific conflicts that have been a long time coming.

Jimmy, it seems, is as slippery as ever, adrift on a sour victory. Kim is confronted very dramatically with the error of her ways. Mike’s is the only storyline that appears to be in a lull. He grudgingly goes through the motions to  launder his money through Gus Fring’s operation. This entails becoming an employee of multinational corporation Madrigal, if only on paper.

So whose fall does the episode title refer to? Jimmy, falling from our good graces by conning the trusting Irene Landry, one of his loyal clients? Or Mike, who falls into Gus’s clutches? Or is Hector the one who falls, revealing his weakness to Gus at a delicate juncture and losing face with Don Elladio in the bargain? What about Chuck, who falls out with HHM?

Maybe it’s Kim, falling asleep at the wheel and falling short of expectations. Surely her sudden car crash is the episode’s greatest shock to the system, coming at a moment when Kim’s at the end of her rope. This is due in part to Jimmy’s erratic behavior and in part to her own dogged determination to singlehandedly help Billy Gatwood with an oil drilling rights dispute. And of course the extra work is in addition to her overwhelming responsibilities with Mesa Verde. Something had to give.  Now it’s just a matter of how the ripple effect from the accident is absorbed into Kim’s career trajectory.
