Hi, I'm your host Vasco Duarte. Welcome

0:03

to the Scrum Master Toolbox Podcast, where

0:05

we share tips and tricks from Scrum

0:07

Masters around the world. Every

0:10

day we bring you inspiring answers

0:12

to important questions that all Scrum

0:14

Masters face day after day. Hello

0:21

everybody, welcome to our big episode

0:23

of the week. Of course, Success

0:25

Thursday is the topic of today.

0:28

We have with us this week,

0:30

Patty Alaskowitz. Hey Patty, welcome back.

0:33

Hello, thank you for having me again. It's

0:36

a pleasure to have you here. Of course,

0:38

we're going to talk about success, but before we

0:40

dive into that, share with us what's

0:43

your favorite retrospective format and why?

0:46

Yes, I love retrospective. I

0:51

didn't used to, but many, many

0:53

years ago, and this is like

0:55

2011, I went through yoga teacher

1:00

training and that really

1:02

taught me to be very self-reflective.

1:05

So that's where my retrospective journey started and

1:07

I realized the importance of it. But

1:12

it is challenging because a lot

1:14

of times people don't want to look at

1:16

themselves in the mirror or look at the

1:19

team in the mirror. It's

1:21

difficult, it's uncomfortable. In

1:25

addition to, in our previous

1:27

episode, I was talking about this problem

1:29

solving candidates that I created. I'm

1:32

going to say, other

1:35

than that, one of

1:37

my favorite retrospectives is the

1:39

sailboat. I

1:43

love that one because first of all, it's very simple. The

1:48

visual is a sailboat. There's an anchor like

1:50

what held us back. There's

1:52

the sail with what's the wind in

1:54

our sails. There's the sunshine with what's

1:56

going really well. There

1:58

might be like a, I don't know, a sailboat. when iceberg

2:00

or of. A mountain climbing up in or

2:03

something coming up in the distance. That might

2:05

be the road block that we're gonna maybe

2:07

run into. I'm

2:09

a visual person so I love

2:11

using Miro or something visual to

2:13

show these images of the anchor

2:15

in the wind and the sun

2:17

and the and them and the

2:19

iceberg speakers. To me that it

2:21

it. It makes the connection.

2:25

Of the the problem or

2:27

the challenge and that that

2:29

image and. That.

2:31

Is something that is really strong

2:34

because of my educational background Might

2:36

My teaching background said that I

2:38

understand that that making those connections

2:40

is really. Key

2:42

to people remembering the

2:45

information afterwards so. I'm

2:47

gonna say that one. And

2:51

I think that's a great. Retrospective

2:54

Four Months The problem solving service that

2:56

you mentioned yesterday. I think that that

2:58

was also a idea. I really loved

3:00

how you describe that, so I'm looking

3:03

forward to seeing more on that myself

3:05

as well. But of us we run

3:07

this retrospectives because we want to be

3:09

successful and we want to help the

3:11

team's. Be. Successful. Ah, more

3:14

than anything. So let's describe that

3:16

for our listeners. patty: What do

3:18

you call a successful scrum master?

3:21

What does that mean for you?

3:26

A successful scrum master.

3:28

Is. Somebody.

3:32

Who walks the walk? To

3:35

me. That. Is

3:38

the number one thing?

3:41

That. I.

3:43

As a scrum master and now isn't

3:45

as rock, need to always be mindful

3:48

of. Because.

3:50

People would trust and this is

3:53

human nature. People will trust people

3:55

that do and say the same

3:57

thing. Whether you do

3:59

some the matinee something bad right they trust.

4:02

had. It If you do something positive,

4:04

Id say something. Positive people trust

4:06

that. But when you say something

4:08

positive and do something negative, spears

4:11

or rub, their people see it

4:13

whether it's subconscious or whether they're

4:15

aware of it. So.

4:17

For me coming into a team,

4:19

if I'm going to say we

4:22

need to have a tough conversation,

4:24

I need to be willing to

4:26

have tough conversations. Myself And this

4:28

is where. It goes back to

4:30

you know I had. Personal.

4:32

Coaches for many years because I

4:35

know what it's like. To

4:37

be in the code see

4:39

position. To be

4:41

uncomfortable. To. Trust somebody

4:44

to help me over my

4:46

uncomfortable obstacles and see some

4:48

success. So as

4:50

a scrum master, as a coach

4:52

showing up and saying. I'm

4:56

in this with you. I'm.

4:58

Uncomfortable to I'm.

5:00

Pushing myself out of my comfort

5:02

zone here to it's uncomfortable for

5:04

me to sit in silence and

5:07

wait for somebody to speak. It's

5:09

in a retrospective when nobody wants

5:11

speak. Oh, And.

5:15

I think it goes a long way. When.

5:18

People. In front of

5:20

you see your vulnerability because and

5:22

they feel comfortable doing and as

5:24

well. How

5:27

do you keep yourself accountable? Because

5:29

it's definitely not easy. To. Take

5:31

that position to show vulnerability. Decision

5:33

to be mindful of walking the

5:35

walk as you just described up

5:37

in a lot. what is your

5:40

i don't know weekly routine or

5:42

or how do you do that

5:44

person all self reflection in order

5:46

to stay focused and stay grounded?

5:49

I am. I. Spend a

5:51

lot of time impersonal retrospective. And

5:54

self reflection. Am I'm

5:56

I'm naturally a thinker. so

5:58

i think that sometimes hit It goes too far

6:00

down the rabbit hole. You got to be careful.

6:03

But I, as I mentioned in

6:06

the previous episode,

6:11

in 2011, 2012,

6:13

I started practicing yoga. And I went

6:17

through a teacher training and became an

6:19

instructor myself. And that it's

6:21

a practice for a reason, you practice

6:24

being very mindful of when you

6:26

are bumping up against your comfort

6:29

zone. And realizing

6:31

that you're safe, there's

6:33

no tiger coming to kill you.

6:35

That you're safe, you can take

6:37

a step. And once you take

6:40

the step, you realize, wow, I'm

6:42

okay, I'm still alive. And I

6:44

know that sounds like an exaggeration, but sometimes in

6:46

the human mind, you become

6:49

very convinced that you're not

6:51

going to survive. Even

6:54

though, you know, again, that goes back to this, like, lizard

6:56

brain from when we were in the in

6:59

the caves, right? But

7:02

realizing that if I

7:04

am not

7:08

attempting, if I'm not successful in a

7:10

pose, and I tell myself I

7:12

can't do this yoga pose, sometimes it's in my

7:14

head. And it's because I'm not

7:16

trying because my mind talks me out

7:18

of it before I even attempt it.

7:21

So just being mindful that

7:23

that translates to everything I do

7:26

as a scrum master natural coach.

7:30

When I'm avoiding something, really

7:32

sitting back and saying, what's

7:34

going on here? Why am I avoiding this? And

7:38

like that, that I didn't describe it. Because

7:41

I see when when working with

7:44

teams, I see teams doing the same. But

7:47

what I've realized over the years is that

7:49

the reason why I see teams doing the

7:51

same is because I have practiced seeing myself

7:53

doing that. And

7:55

I think that that aspect of

7:57

practicing on yourself so like being

8:00

mindful of what you're doing is what

8:02

helps us in the end being mindful

8:04

of what the team is trying to

8:06

do. Correct.

8:11

And like I mentioned before, whether

8:14

it's in a one-on-one conversation or even

8:16

in front of a group saying, this

8:18

is uncomfortable, but we're going

8:20

to work through this together. I'm uncomfortable too, but

8:22

look, I'm showing up and

8:25

I'm still doing the thing. And

8:29

I think the last thing I

8:31

want to point out here is

8:33

having like follow-up conversations

8:36

and pointing again, whether it's an

8:38

individual or a team back to,

8:40

do you remember where we used

8:42

to be? Do you remember

8:44

where we were? Look

8:46

at how much we've overcome. And

8:50

by focusing people

8:52

on how much they've achieved, it gives

8:54

them the courage to take that next

8:56

step because the next

8:58

step, the uncomfortable step, they

9:01

never stop. The

9:05

tough thing always shows up, but you have

9:07

to have the courage

9:09

to keep taking the step because chances

9:11

are it does become more difficult. Absolutely.

9:15

And that's a very important lesson for all of us. Reflection

9:18

starts with us. Self-reflecting. Thank you for

9:20

sharing that, Patty. Part

9:26

of a successful Scrum Master job is to

9:28

help the product owner. Tomorrow

9:31

we explore that critical role in Scrum,

9:33

the product owner role. Tune in to

9:35

learn about product owner anti-patterns, what you

9:37

can do to help the product owner

9:40

and a real life example of what

9:42

a great product owner is and what

9:44

made it so. Tomorrow
