Welcome to Induction Vault, a production
0:08
of I Heart Radio and the Rock and Roll Hall
0:10
of Fame. M
0:33
Imagine how wonderful it feels to
0:35
have one of your heroes senior praises.
0:38
That's what Chrissie Hynd experienced when Neil
0:40
Young inducted her and her band The Pretenders
0:43
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in two thousand five.
0:46
In his entirely improvised speech, Neil
0:49
eloquently expresses his love for The Pretenders,
0:52
proclaiming them one of the greatest rock and
0:54
roll bands ever, inciting them
0:56
as an influence on him and his own band,
0:58
Crazy Horse. Chrissie's acceptance
1:01
speech is brief but poignant, asserting
1:03
that the Pretenders are now a quote tribute
1:05
band that pays tribute to their
1:07
original band members who have both passed away.
1:10
Guitarist James Honeyman Scott and
1:12
bassist Pete Barndon. Drummer
1:15
Martin Chambers expresses thanks for the
1:17
honor of induction and reminiscence
1:19
about touring America for the first time
1:21
with this old bandmates. Thank
1:30
you, thank you. It's a great
1:33
honor to be here and uh I enjoy
1:35
your company every time I come here, see
1:37
you people all the time. It's
1:40
great. I'm
1:43
running for office. No, really,
1:47
I'm very honored. I'm very happy
1:49
to be here to talk
1:52
a little bit out the pretenders who
1:55
had a great influence on myself
1:57
and my band Crazy
1:59
Horse. Uh yeah,
2:04
when we couldn't figure out what to do, we used to put on
2:06
those records and listen to them
2:08
and go, Okay, they got who's
2:12
what she looked like? You know, this
2:14
was or something And anyway,
2:17
they had a huge impression on me. I I obviously
2:19
you can look at my I don't have any notes. I yeah,
2:24
but there's I don't know what to say on her there. This
2:26
is one of the greatest rock and roll bands that ever lived.
2:29
They went through all of the heartache that rock
2:31
and roll was built on. They
2:33
lost two key members and
2:36
they never gave up. They kept going
2:38
and they nothing would stop him.
2:40
And and Chrissy is she She's
2:43
a rock and roll woman. She's got it in her heart. She's
2:45
gonna be rock until she drops. And
2:48
I love her and
2:54
Martin great drama that's always
2:56
been there with her. And
2:59
those of you who are in bands and who front
3:01
bands, you know what it's like. To have a
3:03
great drummer who's always with you, and
3:05
what a great feeling that is, and and to
3:08
have these people with you so uh.
3:10
You know, sometimes in these bands we
3:13
make so much out of the lead singer, you
3:15
know, we make the lead singer the big thing. And
3:18
actually our business we try to destroy
3:20
some bands by by pulling these
3:22
people out and trying to make them something they are and they're
3:24
really part of a rock and roll band. And
3:27
and I'm sure that Chrissy had
3:29
a lot of people trying to get her
3:31
to take a step somewhere else, but she
3:33
never did because she's a true rocker
3:36
and playing with a great rock and roll band
3:38
and she just can't get enough. And you can tell every
3:40
time she walks on the stage. I'm
3:42
very proud just to know her. And it's it's
3:45
uh, my pleasure and distinct
3:47
honor to induct the Pretenders
3:50
into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. For
4:00
the break we'll hear the Pretenders accepted
4:02
speeches on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction
4:05
belt. Okay,
4:10
well, I know the Pretenders have looked like a
4:12
tribute band for the last
4:14
twenty years, and actually they
4:16
are a tribute tribute band, and and
4:20
we're paying tribute tonight to James Sun even Scott
4:22
and Pete Farndon, without whom we wouldn't
4:24
be here m now.
4:31
On the other hand, without us, they might have been
4:33
here. Um. But that's uh,
4:36
that's the way it works in rock and roll.
4:39
But I all I really have to say about it is
4:41
two notes, boom boom, boom boom,
4:43
never change, never change it. He just
4:45
keep moving, but never change. Mark
4:47
you having to add to that correct at
4:54
least he's going to be a bit of a difficult pleasure.
4:59
Uh. Twenty five years ago
5:01
tonight, we were playing on our
5:03
third show in America on the
5:05
first US tour in a place called Syracuse
5:08
in the state of New York. It's
5:13
called Uncle Sam's in case you were there, and
5:17
we tore up the country a couple of times
5:19
that year. A couple of weeks after that,
5:22
Jim and are in the front of the converted
5:25
greyhound bus the middle
5:27
of the night, exotic
5:30
booze and he
5:32
looked out the window and he said, acrossing
5:36
the Mississippi his Hank Williams
5:38
on the radio, and I mean, yeah, and we're from
5:41
Harringford. It was a great
5:43
moment like this is tonight
5:45
for jim and Pete from a little market
5:47
town in England on the west side
5:50
on the Welsh borders. I think
5:52
somebody on table fifteen might know where that
5:55
is. And it's
5:58
a pleasure, It really is a pleasure. There's few
6:00
people, extra special people to thank. It's
6:02
a pleasure to have Jimmy's
6:05
sister here to night, Lynd Scott and
6:08
Dave Hill, David our original manager.
6:12
Remember Stan Tippins there on the road guys,
6:14
you know, and well, there's
6:18
a lot of people to think. I'd like to thank
6:21
Mick Green. Mick Green was it
6:24
was still a great guitar player, has
6:26
been playing over over forty
6:28
years with a Bank of the Pirates, and he
6:30
helped us out at a very difficult
6:32
time when we were looking for somebody
6:35
to
6:37
do the impossible step
6:39
into the shoes as somebody like James Turneyman Scott.
6:43
Well we managed to continue. And I'd
6:45
like to thank a lot more people, especially the drummers
6:47
who sat in my seat kept it
6:49
warm. Thank you very much. Yeah,
6:57
well, Martin was playing crap for a while and
6:59
I had this a true to the music. So I'd like to
7:01
thank Blair Cunningham for filling
7:03
in for a few years. Martin
7:06
could be excuse for being um
7:08
part of the Sunny and Share shop back
7:12
away from the Drummer and
7:15
Robbie McIntosh and Malcolm
7:17
Foster certainly not a great
7:20
lineup of ours. Pretty warrel
7:23
T M. Stevens. There's
7:26
a lot of people to thank and get
7:30
over it. Okay, We're gonna play
7:32
some some songs I'd like to thank. I'd
7:36
like to thank Andy Hobson and Adam
7:38
Seymour were claimed the last
7:41
fifteen years and making my life
7:43
more funny it really should be. And
7:45
I'd like to thank Christie especially for making
7:47
my life really interesting. Thank
7:51
you, thank
7:53
