2nd Lt. Matthias Day fought with the 9th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, leading “Buffalo Soldiers”. Won the CMOH on Sept., 18, 1879, during a battle in Las Animas Canyon in the Arizona territory for advancing alone into the enemy’s lines under fire and carrying off a wounded soldier under his command after he had been ordered to retreat.
