In 1971 Ivan Illich wrote "Deschooling Society", a text which was far ahead of its time.
He laid out a thorough critique of what we've called traditional and mainstream approaches to education. He also articulated a concrete progressive vision for moving forward. 50 years later his critique still holds weight.
In part 2 of our book review, we dig into Illich's solutions for a post school society. These include skill exchanges, peer networks and resource sharing, things that in many ways mirror systems available to us all in 2023.
And so we ask why our education system doesn't look more like his vision.
