- Welcome to Redefine U, season five.
0:11
I'm Dan Baum. Over the last few years,
0:13
this podcast has been a place
0:16
to share powerful stories of redefinition
0:18
and lightning strike moments, and to learn and grow with
0:20
one another through adversity
0:23
and change, even through
0:23
a global pandemic.
0:27
This season to close out the
0:27
college's 60th anniversary,
0:30
we invited members of the
0:30
community past and present,
0:33
to join us in sharing their
0:33
favorite AACC memories.

0:46
- I'm Joyce Dawson, and I'm the Assistant Director
0:48
for Facilities Planning
0:51
and Construction here at
0:51
the community college,
0:55
and our mission is to design, plan,
0:59
construct, all of the
0:59
buildings for the campus,
1:02
and also we do smaller projects too.
1:05
It might be you just
1:05
need to move your office,
1:07
or reorganize your office, or
1:07
redecorate your office suite.
1:12
But whatever it has to do
1:12
with design and construction,
1:16
our department is supporting that. - Excellent, thank you.
1:21
So what's your favorite AACC memory?
1:24
- Well, I received my construction
1:24
management certification
1:28
through AACC, and later I was working
1:32
as the college's owner's
1:32
representative for the construction
1:36
of the CALT building. One day a tour came through
1:38
with the architect, engineer,
1:44
and construction management faculty.
1:47
So that was kind of a
1:47
great surprise moment
1:50
to see the people who had
1:50
added to my education,
1:54
coming through a building that I was acting as the
1:55
owner's representative
1:58
for construction management. So our joke between everyone was,
2:04
I had better have been paying attention,
2:06
and they better have taught me well. (Joyce laughs)
2:09
So that was a great memory,
2:09
to see the people that added
2:12
to my education, actually get to see me doing something
2:16
that was going to be meaningful for them.
2:19
- That's excellent. I'm sure they were excited to see that you are putting
2:21
what you learned to work.
2:23
It has driven your career.
2:25
- And it's still standing, Dan.
2:25
(both laugh)
2:29
- That's the best part. - The best part. - Yeah.
2:32
Now, is there someone you met through AACC
2:34
who made a big impact on you?
2:36
- Well, as I thought about this, it was really all of my
2:38
instructors that I had here.
2:43
Each one of them impacted
2:43
me in a very positive way.
2:47
Everyone was so qualified,
2:50
and gave so much personal
2:50
attention as I was studying.
2:54
The other thing that I noticed too is,
2:56
how approachable all my instructors were.
2:59
I never felt like if I had a question
3:02
or a need, that I couldn't bother them,
3:04
or couldn't talk to them. In fact, they were very clear that
3:08
that was part of their job,
3:08
is to make sure I learned
3:12
what I needed to learn, and I rose to the level that
3:13
they were trying to convey
3:18
through that class. So I was just very impressed
3:21
that I had such a great
3:21
group of instructors,
3:25
and a lot of people would say, "At a community college?"
3:29
But yes, at a community college.
3:32
- That's great. How has being part of the
3:33
AACC community redefined you?
3:38
- Well, this is my second career.
3:41
I took some time off to raise a family,
3:44
and then I came back into the workforce.
3:48
So really coming here to
3:48
refresh my credentials,
3:51
and come back into the workforce,
3:54
has really promoted my career
3:56
and helped me do what I do today.
3:59
It was only logical 14 years ago
4:01
when I had the opportunity
4:01
to join the staff
4:04
here at the college to jump on that opportunity
4:05
and take part in that.
4:09
So here I am, I'm AACC educated,
4:12
and I work for AACC, and
4:12
it's wonderful to be here
4:17
and just watch our
4:17
campus grow and improve.
4:21
And you know what we always
4:21
say, we finish one thing,
4:24
and it's always, "Well, what's next?
4:27
What's next?" So it's an exciting place to be.
4:31
- Well, next has been this Health and Life Sciences building.
4:33
It must be exciting for you
4:36
to see the fruits of
4:36
your labor so clearly.
4:38
You mentioned CALT, but the things that you do,
4:41
there they are, they remain,
4:41
they're still standing,
4:43
that must be pretty exciting. - Well, it is a cool career,
4:46
'cause we're there at the inception,
4:49
working through the planning
4:51
and the vision of what's to come.
4:54
Then we work through the design of what's
4:57
to come, and we begin to
4:57
formulate what it takes
5:01
to give us that educational experience,
5:04
or administrative experience
5:04
that we're looking for
5:07
on this campus. So that's very exciting.
5:10
And then that first teaspoon of soil
5:13
comes out of the ground, and from there it's just a forward path
5:17
of moving through our plans and reviewing.
5:22
And the other thing that's wonderful here,
5:24
is we're so collaborative. I don't think there's any department here
5:30
that doesn't get touched at
5:30
some point when we're building.
5:33
We need opinions of faculty, staff,
5:37
and students to guide decisions,
5:40
and we need people to look
5:40
at things as we're building,
5:44
to be sure that we're hitting the mark.
5:46
"Is this what you expected? Would this be a surprise if you saw this,
5:51
and would that be a good
5:51
surprise, or a bad surprise,"
5:53
you know, kind of thing. So all of this talent
5:55
comes in, that's right here
5:58
within our campus, and
5:58
we form this huge team
6:02
that just works until we're successful.
6:04
So when we walk and look
6:04
at a building like HLSB,
6:09
you think of all of the hands
6:12
that have touched that project
6:12
from within the campus,
6:15
and it's something the whole
6:15
campus can really be proud of.
6:19
And it's so cool to go in
6:23
and watch the students use the building,
6:26
and feel the thrill of, "Oh look, they really do
6:28
like the laptop bars."
6:31
Or "Look, they are using the study rooms."
6:34
Or "Look at this great setup they have
6:37
to practice the skills
6:37
of their profession."
6:40
So anybody that knows
6:40
me, knows I love my job.
6:43
It's like Legos for big girls, and it just never ceases
6:47
to be fun.
6:47
(Dan laughs)
6:50
- That's great. I love it. Well, thank you, Joyce.
6:53
Appreciate you sharing, and the Health and Life
6:54
Sciences building is gorgeous.
6:56
CALT is also gorgeous, we have really, really lovely buildings.
7:00
- Yeah, well, I tell you as a campus, we've been very, very fortunate
7:03
with a very robust building
7:03
and renovation schedule,
7:07
and so, like I said, "What's next?
7:10
We're ready." - All right, well thank you again.
7:12
Appreciate you taking the time. - All right. Thank you all.
7:15
(gentle instrumental music)
