This is a great question considering our world is spiraling farther and farther away from true sustainability every single day.
What does it mean for something to be sustainable?
Here is the definition of what it means. It is the ability to maintain at a certain rate. So think of the economy.
Avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.
This definition is the one that usually gets more attention.
So in the simplest of terms, don’t take more than you can put back. It is a circular economy. Just for the sake of time, we are going to jump into the farming industry. I could apply this same principle to literally every industry on the planet. Maybe the electric car would be next. Like, the electricity for your electric car still comes from coal….hmmmm..crazy, I know. And the cobalt for the batteries. Which comes from the Republic of Congo and is associated with child labor and environmental segregation. But hey, you are driving an electric car that is clean energy…..right….ok back to one of My favorite examples of sustainability is the farming system. We talk about regenerative farming or regeneration. Or as in the Lion King, its the circle of life. There is a delicate balance in our ecosystem. So if you talk to a farmer they will tell you that the soil is the first place to start. If it is nutrient-dense and healthy, it will grow the grass >the cows graze> spread their manure > and enrich the soil even more. The rancher or farmer also rotates the crops they grow and moves the animals to different pastures. Talk about biodiversity! When it is time,
The animal is field harvested after a few years, we butcher the cows and eat the nutrient meat and clean food. A circular economy.
