not in the good, fun way. With
0:11
that in mind, and with you forewarned,
0:13
on we go. Sudapod

Alistair, your host, and this week's story
0:40

Wiswell. Too Little, Too Little,
0:45
Too Much deals with some heavy themes, so go
0:47
careful if you need to. It
0:49
first appeared in Cosmos Infinities in
0:51
March of 2022. John

disabilities, including a neuromuscular syndrome, and
1:39
thinks healthy people's capacity to complain
1:42
is very funny. He finds
1:44
a lot of things very funny, and he would very much
1:46
like to keep it that way. The
1:48
narrator this week is Paul Cram, and
1:50
urban legend fans should seek out the

4:00
have beds in here, it's gonna be like camping.
4:03
Lark and Brantley share a room that is too
4:05
large with too little in it. The
4:08
carpet is softer than pillows. They
4:10
lie in sleeping bags that their uncle says they
4:13
used when they camped when they were smaller. Neither
4:16
of the twins remember that. Uncle
4:19
Lee hugs them one more time and says, if
4:21
you need anything come knock for me. I'll
4:24
leave the hall light on. You guys
4:26
are totally safe here. Your dad will be here
4:28
before you wake up. The
4:32
door is open too much, letting
4:34
too much light in for Lark to sleep. His
4:37
sleeping bag warms up until he feels
4:40
like a microwaving hot dog. The
4:43
carpet softness invades through the sleeping
4:45
bag. Lark
4:47
pinches the carpet and
4:49
it feels fine, like
4:51
the lint they clean out of the dryer. That
4:55
lint always burns fast. Before
4:58
he can stop himself, he
5:00
worries. Where
5:03
he pinched the carpet, the
5:05
fabric sparks with an orange flame. It
5:08
looks for a second like someone hit a cigarette
5:10
lighter under the floor. Lark's
5:13
whole body seizes up and he bags the flame
5:15
to go away. It
5:17
grows taller instead, turning
5:19
soft fabric into fire. A
5:23
liquid hiss cuts through the night and
5:25
the flame is doused in chalky foam.
5:28
Brantley lies on his side in his sleeping bag,
5:31
hugging a fire extinguisher like a teddy
5:33
bear. He keeps
5:35
the nozzle aimed where the flame had
5:37
sprouted and his eyes aim dead on
5:39
Lark. It's
5:42
the same look Brantley had earlier tonight. The
5:44
same look from right before he made Lark do what he
5:47
did. When
5:51
Uncle Lee isn't looking, the
5:53
twins steal as many bags of his colorful cereals
5:55
as they can. Lark
5:57
knows they'll need it when father forgets. shrill
10:00
and brief and he falls to the
10:02
floor. It's more shock than
10:04
harm. Brantley says,
10:08
Don't be a baby. Look at it.
10:10
Look. He holds
10:13
the thumbtack close to Lark's face. There's
10:15
no blood on it. See this?
10:18
See how small it is? It doesn't
10:20
hurt. It does hurt. Don't
10:23
lie. I do what I do and
10:26
it makes you do what you do. Lark's
10:29
head is full of hornets. They
10:32
buzz around and make him unable to hear his
10:34
feelings. His
10:37
imagination is full of melting crayons
10:40
and the smell of lint turning to fire and
10:43
a longing for coconut shampoo. Will
10:47
the fire extinguisher stop it if he does his
10:49
thing too much? Lark
10:52
asks, Does this have
10:54
to be what you do? Brantley
10:57
pokes him two more times. The
11:04
first of the two times, Lark has to
11:06
wait so long for it. Brantley
11:09
holds the point of the thumbtack inside Lark's
11:11
belly button so that it tickles. It's
11:14
the tickle before the pain and
11:17
as small as the point. Lark
11:20
can already feel it inside his body, stabbing
11:22
him all the way to his spine. The
11:26
wait for this tack fills him with more
11:28
feeling than the tack itself ever could. The
11:32
stink of smoke assails them. They
11:35
will definitely have to wash their hair to get the
11:37
smell out before father returns. Brantley
11:40
opens the windows so the smoke
11:42
detector won't go off. Lark
11:45
shoves the smoldering trash under a mattress
11:47
to kill it. Lark
11:49
says, That was really close. We
11:51
have to be careful. That's
11:54
when Brantley pokes him the second time. It's
11:59
a relief. cover
18:00
her entire body. Ever
18:03
since he did his thing to his brother, ever
18:06
since they held each other in the shower, he's
18:09
wanted to spend more time in the tub. It's
18:13
cold porcelain that resists
18:15
his warmth. Sometimes
18:17
he climbs in still wearing his clothes and
18:20
lets the water rise up until it's over
18:22
his head. If
18:24
he's surrounded by water, maybe
18:27
he won't burn anything no matter how worried
18:29
he is. He
18:32
worries most of the nights when father returns. Brantley
18:35
does not come with him. At
18:38
the thought that father will ask him to spend the
18:40
night in his room in Brantley's place, Lark
18:44
feels fires sprouting and dying in
18:46
the bathwater around him. Whenever
18:49
it sounds like father is coming near the door
18:51
between their rooms, Lark submerges
18:54
in the bath. He
18:56
holds his breath and tries to hold his thoughts. If
19:00
he can hold them both, maybe
19:02
nobody will do what they
19:04
do. One
19:08
time, Lark emerges from
19:10
the water and father is
19:12
standing in the bathroom door. Gray
19:15
eyes watch Lark. His
19:18
satin tie undone and hanging around
19:20
his shaved throat. Lark
19:22
freezes in the water. He
19:25
doesn't know what to think. The
19:28
fire alarm goes off. Thank
19:30
God they have to leave and father can't ask him to
19:32
have a word in private. Brantley
19:39
comes home. Home
19:41
to the hotel anyway. He
19:44
has fancy, violet and indigo kerchiefs
19:46
that he wears over his scalp.
19:49
He has several pills he's supposed to take with his
19:51
food. He has
19:54
an ointment that Lark must apply
19:56
twice per day because father
19:58
is busy and can't be expected to die. Which
24:00
is a relief compared to all
24:02
the anticipated awfulness before. He
24:05
inhales deeply, unable
24:08
to smell father. The
24:11
smell of father ceasing to be
24:13
is too small to overpower melting
24:15
plastic. Lark won't
24:17
have to bother to wash it off. Alarms
24:21
ring and somebody outside is shouting. Some
24:24
of the noises are like mountain lions when they're
24:26
not being cute. Brantley
24:29
climbs onto the ottoman, taking
24:31
less than half of it. His
24:34
gray eyes look bluer, closer to
24:36
the window and the light of the outdoors.
24:40
He holds the thumbtack, which is the
24:42
deep gray of parking lot pavement. Lark
24:46
says, give me that. Why?
24:49
Because this isn't what you do. Why?
24:53
What he does doesn't happen anymore.
24:57
So what you do doesn't happen either.
25:00
Why? Because I did
25:02
what I do. I did it
25:04
for you. He
25:06
did? For
25:09
the first time, Lark approaches
25:11
his brother when a thumbtack is out. He
25:14
pries it from his fingers. He
25:17
holds it by the metal tip, pinching
25:19
it so it doesn't poke anything. The
25:22
metallic gray nub juts out. Brantley
25:26
asks the nub, what
25:29
do I do without it? Lark
25:32
takes his brother's thumbtack, the
25:34
plastic nub still warm with his brother's hands.
25:38
He pulls the curtain from the wall and sticks
25:40
the tack there where nobody will see it. Then
25:43
he drops the curtain over it. It's
25:46
gone. There's
25:48
a fever in Brantley's voice, like
25:50
he'll cry without an answer. What
25:53
do I do now? We
25:55
need to call Uncle Lee. No,
25:57
Brantley squirms, nearly falling off the autumn.
