best pediatrician for your baby. A

pediatrician is the primary care provider

0:23

for your child from birth through

0:25

early adulthood. They're going

0:27

to give you support in monitoring

0:29

the growth of your baby, administering

vaccines, diagnosing illnesses. They

also are going to help guide you

on health and development and will help

choosing a pediatrician that's the right fit

basic things to look for

0:50

like proximity, insurance coverage, qualifications,

but you also need to consider

their philosophy on topics like breastfeeding,

0:57

parenting, vaccines. This

episode walks you through how to find

the best pediatrician who's going to be

2:01

A

2:04

pediatrician is a doctor who specializes

2:07

in children's health, and they go

2:09

from birth through early adulthood. So

2:12

in addition to going to

2:14

undergraduate and medical school, a

2:16

pediatrician also completes three years

2:19

of pediatric residency training. It's

2:22

possible that your child's primary care

2:24

provider could be a family physician

2:26

or a general practitioner. Usually

2:29

it's going to be a pediatrician. That's

2:31

what we're talking about in today's episode.

2:33

But everything that we talk about will

2:35

also apply if you're working with a

2:38

family doctor or a general practitioner. A

2:41

pediatrician is really your trusted partner

2:44

in ensuring your baby is healthy

2:46

and developing normally. They're

2:48

going to monitor your child's growth and

2:50

development. They're going to

2:52

administer immunizations and diagnose

2:54

and treat common illnesses. Most

2:58

importantly, they're going to assist you in

3:00

navigating caring for your baby. And they

3:02

can answer all your questions about caring

3:04

for them, about their health and their

3:07

development. Most of your appointments

3:09

with a pediatrician are preventative care. So

3:11

you're taking your baby to the doctor

3:13

when they're not sick. This

3:15

is a great opportunity to see how

3:18

they're growing and developing. Your

3:20

pediatrician is going to take measurements like

3:22

their weight, their height, their head circumference,

3:24

their blood pressure. They're

3:26

going to examine senses like hearing

3:29

and vision. They

3:31

will also monitor developmental milestones.

3:34

And as children grow, they

3:36

get into observing more development,

3:38

including social, behavioral, and mental

3:40

health. The American

3:42

Academy of Pediatrics has guidelines for

3:45

when well child visits should occur.

3:48

Now certainly vaccination schedules do play

3:50

some part in this timeline. But

3:53

even if you're opting out of vaccines,

3:55

it's still good to check in with

3:57

a pediatrician regularly. is

4:00

an opportunity for you to ask questions and

4:02

to build a relationship with

4:05

your child's doctor. If

4:07

you want to see some of the topics

4:09

that can be addressed at each specific appointment,

4:11

there's going to be some links in the

4:13

article for this episode. The

4:16

American Academy of Pediatrics

4:18

recommendations for appointments are

4:20

the first one is three to five days

4:23

after birth and then at one

4:25

month, two months, four months,

4:28

six months, nine months, at

4:30

one year old, 15 months,

4:32

at 18 months, and

4:35

then two, two and a half, three,

4:37

and then after your baby's three is

4:39

old, they should just be seeing their

4:42

pediatrician annually. You

4:44

can see this is a lot of

4:46

appointments. They happen pretty regularly through the

4:48

first three years of your baby's life

4:50

and a pediatrician is somebody that you

4:52

will be working closely with to make

4:54

sure that your child is healthy. So

4:57

this is somebody that plays a really

4:59

important role. I

5:01

know that you have a lot going on

5:03

in your pregnancy and finding the right pediatrician

5:05

is just one item on a long list

5:07

of things to do. You

5:09

can start looking for a pediatrician as

5:12

early as you'd like, but as

5:14

you educate yourself, your priorities may change

5:16

on what type of provider you're looking

5:18

for. I think around

5:20

week 30 is a really good

5:22

ballpark to start. If you want

5:24

to interview potential doctors in person,

5:26

you're gonna need some additional time

5:28

to schedule and attend those appointments.

5:31

I recommend having everything wrapped up by

5:33

week 36 and that's

5:36

not just for looking for a pediatrician.

5:38

That's all of the to-do items during

5:40

pregnancy. That way you can enjoy the

5:42

last month of your pregnancy and

5:45

in the event your baby comes early, you're

5:47

not gonna have a whole long list of

5:49

things that you still need to get done.

5:52

The first step in choosing a

5:54

pediatrician for your baby is to

5:56

identify potential doctors so you know

5:58

what your options are. Getting

6:00

a referral is almost always better than

6:03

selecting a random name from a list

6:05

online. So if you have friends or

6:07

family who have babies or young kids,

6:10

ask them if they would recommend their

6:12

pediatrician. Referrals can also

6:14

come from your doctor, midwife, the

6:16

hospital, or a birth center. One

6:19

thing you need to take into account is

6:22

your health insurance, and that will likely affect

6:24

your options. You can go

6:26

through your health insurance company and find

6:28

out what pediatricians are covered in your

6:30

area. And if you find

6:32

potential pediatricians in another way, you need

6:35

to verify that your insurance covers them.

6:38

Another resource is the American

6:40

Academy of Pediatrics. This

6:42

is an organization that develops guidelines

6:45

and recommendations for pediatric health care

6:47

practices. They publish scientific

6:49

research. They advocate for

6:51

policies that benefit children's health. And

6:54

they give resources and support to parents.

6:57

If a pediatrician is certified

6:59

by the American Board of

7:01

Pediatrics, they will have an

7:03

S-A-A-P following their name. And

7:05

that stands for Fellow of

7:07

the American Academy of Pediatrics.

7:10

Membership in the American Academy of

7:12

Pediatrics is not required to be

7:14

a practicing pediatrician, although

7:17

most pediatricians do belong to

7:19

this organization. I'll

7:21

have a link in the article for this episode

7:23

if you want to use their search tool. Your

7:27

initial search is probably going to

7:29

start online. So if you're looking

7:31

at the American Academy of Pediatrics

7:33

website or you're looking through your

7:35

insurance, they're going to give

7:37

you basic information. You're going to see

7:39

the education and training, the gender of

7:42

the doctor, the languages that they speak,

7:44

and their contact information. In

7:47

the initial stage, the two main things

7:49

that you're looking for are that they're

7:51

located near you and that your health

7:54

insurance covers them. And keep

7:56

in mind, although Some medical schools are

7:58

more prestigious than others, Just.

8:00

Because somebody graduated from Harvard medical school

8:02

doesn't mean that there are a doctor.

8:05

So wherever he went to school is

8:07

just one thing to take into account.

8:10

When. You've narrowed down your options

8:12

to a few doctors. You're ready

8:14

to get specific questions answered. A.

8:16

Lot of these questions like what their

8:19

office hours are can be answered with

8:21

a quick google search or thing their

8:23

website. Other questions you'll need to ask

8:25

the pediatrician themselves or a staff member

8:27

at their off as you can call

8:29

and ask questions over the phone. The

8:32

best way to get a feel for

8:34

whether a pediatrician is the right said

8:36

is to meet with them in person.

8:38

If you request an initial com fault,

8:40

you're just gonna call their office or

8:42

send them an email, say that you're

8:44

expecting a baby and that you're looking.

8:47

For a pediatrician and request an

8:49

appointment to come into the office

8:51

for a short introductory meeting. Before.

8:54

We get into specific questions that

8:56

you should be asking when you

8:58

are searching for the right pediatrician.

9:00

You To Eat Cheap Organics For

9:19

their support of this episode. retinal

9:22

is widely used in skin care

9:24

for it anti aging properties. Unfortunately,

9:26

it's recommended that topical retinoids be

9:28

avoided when you're pregnant. That's the

9:31

opinion of the American College of

9:33

Obstetricians and Gynecologists and likely what

9:35

your Ob G Y and will

9:38

9:40

giving up a lot of things.

9:42

During pregnancy. And you don't

want to give up great skincare.

11:25

know the last thing anyone wants to do

11:27

is replace every single pair of shoes that

11:29

11:31

is that wearing insoles can help

11:33

14:16

14:20

Let's get back to today's episode. Let's

14:24

review some questions that you can

14:26

ask potential pediatricians as you're comparing

14:28

your options. Don't worry about

14:30

writing all of these questions down. They

14:33

will be listed in the

14:35

article for this episode. You

14:37

can find that at pregnancypodcast.com/pediatrician.

14:41

And you don't need to ask every single one

14:43

of these questions. You're just going to select the

14:45

ones that apply to you and your baby or

14:47

that apply to things that are important to you.

14:51

First you want to ask about some qualifications.

14:53

You can ask what medical school did

14:56

you attend and where did you undergo

14:58

postgraduate and residency training? How

15:00

long have you been in practice? If

15:03

a doctor is getting near retirement age,

15:05

you may want to ask if they

15:07

plan to continue practicing for the foreseeable

15:09

future. You

15:11

can ask if they have children. It

15:14

may be important for you to work with

15:16

a doctor who has firsthand experience raising a

15:18

child. However, this shouldn't be

15:21

a deal breaker. There are many

15:23

excellent pediatricians that do not have

15:25

children. You may

15:27

also want to ask do you have

15:29

a subspecialty or an area of interest?

15:32

This is an important question if you know that

15:34

your child is going to have special medical needs.

15:37

The next group of questions is around

15:40

the doctor's practice. So you want

15:42

to ask are you part of a group practice?

15:45

If they are, you want to find out if

15:47

your appointments are going to be with different doctors

15:50

or if you're going to see the same doctor

15:52

each visit. You should

15:54

ask how long a typical appointment is.

15:57

A good question to ask is how

15:59

are appointments handled? for children who are sick.

16:02

Is there a separate waiting area for sick

16:04

kids? Most appointments with your

16:06

pediatrician are well-visits when your child

16:08

is healthy. Since newborns and

16:10

young kids have sensitive immune systems, you

16:13

want to avoid having your child around

16:15

other people who are sick. Most

16:18

doctor offices are going to have a

16:20

separate waiting area for children who are

16:22

not feeling well. Next

16:24

question is what is your policy on

16:26

calling or emailing with questions? This

16:29

is something you should be able to do

16:31

in between appointments. Many offices

16:33

are going to have a nurse on

16:35

staff that can answer questions or that

16:37

can help interface between patients and the

16:39

doctor, but you should know what their

16:42

policy is on calling or emailing with

16:44

questions. Another question is

16:46

how do you reach the doctor if

16:48

your child gets sick outside of open

16:50

office hours? For some reason, it

16:52

seems like kids always get sick when

16:54

it's a long holiday weekend. So

16:57

is the doctor available via phone

16:59

if it's outside of business hours?

17:01

Some doctors refer patients to urgent

17:03

care clinics. Others may be

17:05

willing to meet you at the office

17:07

outside of regular hours if your child

17:09

is really sick and needs care. You

17:13

should also ask how are emergencies

17:15

handled? Can they make time for

17:17

an immediate appointment or where would they refer

17:19

you for an emergency? These

17:21

are all questions that you can ask over

17:24

the phone, but visiting an office in person

17:26

is going to allow you to see things

17:28

that you can't view on their website and

17:31

give you information that you can't hear over

17:33

the phone. A few things that you

17:35

want to look for. One is what's

17:37

the overall vibe of the office? Is

17:39

it cluttered and really hectic? Is it

17:42

clean and organized? Is it

17:44

a cold sterile environment or is it really

17:46

warm and inviting? Is the

17:48

staff warm and helpful? Are they friendly when

17:50

you come in? Another thing you'll

17:52

be able to see is if it's crowded and

17:54

if there's a lot of people waiting for appointments.

17:58

A really important taken

18:00

a consideration when you are choosing the

18:02

best pediatrician for your baby is their

18:05

philosophy. You're gonna work

18:07

with this pediatrician to make very critical

18:09

decisions for your child. Of

18:12

course, a doctor's gonna bring

18:14

medical expertise. They're gonna assist

18:16

you in navigating challenging topics

18:18

like breastfeeding, circumcision, vaccines, but

18:21

their attitudes towards these subjects

18:23

will influence their recommendations and

18:25

how they resolve conflict if you don't

18:27

see eye to eye on one of these

18:30

subjects. A lot of

18:32

new mothers struggle with breastfeeding. So

18:34

if it's important to you to exclusively

18:36

breastfeed your child, you may

18:39

wanna prioritize working with a

18:41

pediatrician who prioritizes breastfeeding. If

18:44

you run into issues, do they have training

18:46

and breastfeeding support, or do they have a

18:48

lactation consultant that they can refer you to?

18:51

Alternatively, if you plan not to breastfeed,

18:53

is that a decision that they will

18:55

be supportive of? If

18:58

you know that you're having a boy,

19:00

the decision to circumcise your baby can

19:02

be a polarizing topic. If

19:04

you plan to circumcise your baby, is

19:06

this a procedure that your pediatrician will

19:08

perform? Or is this something that

19:11

they will refer you out to? If

19:13

you wanna utilize alternative medicine

19:15

for your baby, will the

19:17

pediatrician support that? This can

19:19

include things like acupuncture or

19:22

homeopathy. The last thing

19:24

that you want is to feel shame or

19:26

judgment from your child's doctor. Ideally,

19:28

you work with somebody who's supportive of

19:31

the decisions that you're making as a

19:33

parent. You don't have to

19:35

agree on every topic, but you do

19:37

need to be able to have productive

19:39

and respectful conversations. Meeting

19:41

with a pediatrician in person and discussing

19:44

their philosophy around these topics is gonna

19:46

give you a good feel for the

19:48

type of support that you can expect.

19:51

Another very controversial topic

19:54

is vaccines. In

19:56

the United States, every state has

19:58

legislation regarding vaccines. and they

20:00

enforce this by requiring proof of

20:02

vaccines for your child to attend

20:05

public or private daycare or school.

20:08

Currently, 45 states and

20:10

Washington, D.C. grant religious exemptions.

20:14

15 states allow philosophical exemptions

20:16

due to personal, moral, or

20:18

other beliefs. I'll

20:20

put a link if you want to

20:22

see whether your state allows religious or

20:24

philosophical exemptions. All states

20:26

allow exemptions for medical reasons. However,

20:29

whether a pediatrician will write you a

20:31

medical exemption is another story. In

20:34

recent years, some medical boards have been

20:36

giving a lot of pushback to doctors

20:38

who have been writing medical exemptions. And

20:41

in some cases, they have even revoked

20:43

medical licenses. As

20:45

a result, many doctors may not be willing

20:47

to issue a medical exemption. This could be

20:49

relevant if you want to opt out of

20:51

vaccines, and you

20:53

live in a state like California,

20:55

for example, that does not have

20:57

a religious or philosophical exemption. In

21:00

this episode, we're not going to get into

21:03

pros and cons of vaccinating your child. If

21:05

you're debating this, you will need to consider

21:07

the laws of your state. In

21:09

some cases, the decision not to

21:12

vaccinate your child could prohibit them

21:14

from attending public or private daycare

21:16

or school. If you

21:19

think that you want to decline

21:21

vaccines, or you think you may

21:23

want to deviate from the CDC

21:25

vaccination schedule, you should ask a

21:27

potential pediatrician what their position is

21:29

and whether they would support your

21:31

choice. Some pediatricians will

21:33

not accept patients who choose not

21:35

to vaccinate. There

21:38

are a couple of episodes on vaccines.

21:40

One is an overview of vaccines in

21:42

the first two years, and the other

21:44

gets into more detail on individual vaccines.

21:47

I will link to both of those in the

21:49

article for this episode. Hopefully,

21:52

these questions and talking about these things

21:54

gives you a better idea of what

21:56

kind of conversation you should be having

21:58

with a potential pediatrician. Russian so that

22:00

you can choose one. That's the right that.

22:04

Once. You have a pediatrician once

22:06

your baby's first appointment. I mentioned

22:08

at that the American Academy of

22:10

Pediatrics recommends within the first three

22:12

to five days if you have

22:14

your baby at a hospital. When

22:16

you check in and register the

22:18

hospital should ask you for your

22:20

pediatrician name. Many hospitals will notify

22:22

that pediatrician when your babies born.

22:24

Some doctor have made their that

22:26

newborns in the hospital or send

22:28

another doctor from the practice. Others

22:30

may not see you and hill

22:32

you bring your baby in. Their office

22:34

for that first visit. Typically the

22:37

hospital pediatrician is gonna take care of

22:39

newborns until they are discharged and that

22:41

could be instead of or in addition

22:43

to the pediatrician that you choose. If

22:45

you have your baby at home or

22:48

at a bird sent her, you need

22:50

to call your pediatrician once your baby

22:52

is born and make an appointment for

22:54

them to get in within the first

22:56

three to five days. You're

22:59

gonna have a lot of appointments with

23:01

a pediatrician and the first three years

23:03

most of these are going to be

23:05

on a van and routine, but there's

23:07

a few tips for pediatric appointments. It

23:09

can be really helpful to know what's

23:12

coming up at the next appointment so

23:14

that you know. What to expect? At

23:16

the end of each appointment you can ask

23:18

what to expect next time you know what's

23:20

coming up. At. Every appointment

23:23

your baby is going to need to

23:25

be and draft so skip cute outfits

23:27

that can be time consuming to put

23:29

on and take off. Opt for something

23:31

simple like a one. The. If

23:34

you are vaccinating your child according to

23:36

the Cdc schedule, you can expect them

23:39

to get a vaccine and nearly every

23:41

pre natal appointment and every appointment your

23:43

doctor's going to way and measure your

23:45

baby and review their growth chart to

23:48

ensure that your baby is growing at

23:50

a healthy weight. Every

23:52

appointment is an opportunity for you

23:54

to ask questions or address any

23:56

concerns you have about your baby.

23:59

Year. pediatrician is an excellent

24:01

resource to assist you in navigating caring

24:04

for your baby. So keep a list

24:06

of questions in between appointments and bring

24:08

that list with you to your next

24:11

appointment. There is no

24:13

such thing as a stupid question.

24:15

There's no such thing as an

24:17

insignificant concern, even if something

24:19

seems silly. If it's bothering you or

24:21

it's a question that you want an

24:24

answer for, please bring it up at

24:26

your appointment. And

24:28

the last tip for pediatric appointments,

24:30

bring your partner with you. Having

24:33

your partner there allows them to hear

24:35

any advice from the doctor firsthand, and

24:37

it also gives them an opportunity to

24:39

ask any questions that they have. I

24:43

hope that you find a pediatrician who's

24:45

the best choice for you and your

24:47

family and somebody who's very

24:49

supportive of the decisions that you're making

24:51

as a parent. If

24:53

at any point you're unhappy with your

24:55

pediatrician, you can always switch to a

24:57

new doctor. Doctors

24:59

are going to vary a lot in the time

25:02

and attention that they give to patients. If

25:04

you don't feel like you're receiving the level of

25:06

care that you want for your child, or

25:09

if you feel like you're not getting the support

25:11

that you need as a parent, please

25:13

explore your other options. To

25:17

recap today's episode, we talked about

25:19

choosing the best pediatrician for your

25:21

baby. We talked about the role

25:23

that a pediatrician plays and factors

25:25

to consider when choosing one that's

25:27

the right fit for your family.

25:30

Basic things like proximity, insurance

25:32

coverage, their qualifications, but also

25:35

having a discussion about their

25:37

philosophy on topics like breastfeeding,

25:39

parenting, or vaccines. We

25:42

also went through a pile of questions that

25:44

you can ask when you are searching for

25:46

the right pediatrician, and a list of

25:48

all of those questions are in the article for this

25:50

episode. I
