1:41
So, guys, thanks so much for joining us
1:44

1:47
Thank you for.
1:47
Shoving us our pleasure. This
1:50
is so exciting. We have
1:52
started this podcast what feels
1:55
like so long.
1:55
Ago, just because our level of anticipation
1:58
and excitement to get it out there for
2:00
the fans.
2:01
And now we're here, and
2:04
it's just it's so incredible.
2:05
That we're we're iHeart
2:07
has welcomed us with like the biggest open
2:10
arms.
2:10
I just it's been so magical
2:12
already.
2:13
We're super excited to have you in the family and
2:16
the you know, we just met for the first time, you
2:18
know, a few minutes ago, and when
2:20
you both popped on the screen and you're smiling from ear
2:22
to ear. I wouldn't have expected anything different
2:24
from the host of Magical Rewinds. So, uh
2:27
so I'm ready to jump in as you guys are.
2:29
Can we jump in so everybody can get to know a little bit more
2:31
about this podcast than about a few of you.
2:33
Let's do it, do it, so Will,
2:35
I'm going to start with you.
2:37
I'm always so curious when there's
2:39
a podcast that comes out like this, how
2:41
did the idea start?
2:42
Like?
2:42
How did this all come about? Can you give
2:44
us a little bit of a background on that.
2:46
I can.
2:47
So.
2:47
I was doing another show called Podmeat's World.
2:50
By the way, he won't say it, but ridiculously
2:53
successful, like he came out of the gate.
2:55
Yeah, so doing very
2:58
very well. Thank you. Yes, we've been with we partnered
3:00
with iHeart.
3:01
We were all deliriously happy with how Will
3:03
Pot has been doing, and we.
3:06
Started to get more and more.
3:07
We've also do live shows and been doing conventions,
3:10
and especially at the conventions, more
3:12
and more people were asking me about
3:14
my Date with the President's Daughter, which is a movie
3:16
that I did for Wonderful World of Disney back in nineteen
3:19
ninety seven. It's had this amazing
3:21
resurgence, and I was so
3:24
I'm a big fan of podcasts.
3:25
I listened to them every day if I'm not recording
3:27
them, which now I am more often than not.
3:30
And I was on a walk with my dog,
3:32
which is where I always listened to my podcasts,
3:35
and I just started the
3:37
Yeah, just started thinking about
3:39
Wonderful World at Disney and my date
3:41
with the President's daughter, and then I started thinking about
3:43
all these old school Disney movies.
3:46
And I literally on the walk shut
3:48
off.
3:48
I think I was listening to a Podmeats World edit that
3:51
we were doing, so, you know, we also have to listen to our to edit
3:53
everything down. So I was listening to an edit
3:55
and I paused it and called Amy
3:57
Sugarman on the walk and said, Hey,
4:00
I got something. I think I want to rewatch
4:03
Wonderful World of Disney's and she went, I
4:06
love that idea. Now we got
4:08
to find you a co host.
4:09
Literally that fast. It was that quick, and
4:12
that's how it started.
4:13
You know, not to denigrate the industry in any
4:15
way, shape or form, because it's an industry I've been in my entire
4:17
life and I love but the industry's changed a
4:19
lot and a lot of times, when
4:21
you're dealing with giant corporations
4:24
like Disney or anything like that, you come up with
4:26
an idea and you can't even get a know for
4:28
a year. Whereas with the thing that
4:30
I love about iHeart and Amy and all the people
4:32
were working with is she was like, this is great,
4:34
let's do this.
4:35
I love this, and it was that fast.
4:37
The resources of a big legacy
4:39
company, but the mentality
4:41
of a startup and Amy as an activator,
4:44
so she just jumps on things, which that's what we love about
4:46
Amy. But so let me ask you a question. Was
4:49
the catalyst though, the
4:52
confidence you got from Podmeats World
4:54
that like, there is a marketplace for this, there's
4:56
a passion for this content that I didn't
4:58
realize existed, and so I think that
5:01
there's a even a larger marketplace
5:03
for us to expand into.
5:04
Yes, it was definitely.
5:05
It was definitely helpful, you know, knowing how
5:07
I mean, First of all, Podmeats World, Boy Meets World.
5:09
We have the greatest fans in the world. We
5:12
always have. They've been so
5:14
loyal to us, They've stuck with us for thirty
5:16
years. They're coming back to us in
5:18
droves for Podmeats world.
5:20
We're just having so much fun.
5:22
That coupled with the resurgence for my date
5:24
with the President's daughter, because we knew we wanted to start
5:26
with that movie. And then when
5:29
Amy called me and said, we talked about
5:31
co hosts, We talked about different people, how
5:33
we were going to go, what direction we're going to go. And Amy
5:35
called me and said, you heard of the Cheetah Girls
5:37
and they went, of course, I've heard of the Cheatah
5:40
Girls. Everybody's heard of the Cheetah Girls.
5:42
And she went, how about Sabrina? And before she finished
5:44
the name, I was like, perfect, that's perfect.
5:46
We're got, We're in, We're good.
5:48
And that was let me ask you about that. I love
5:50
how quick that all happened. But I got
5:53
a back up because when I listened
5:55
to your first episode good by the way, it's
5:57
only been on for a few weeks. Yeah, and so
5:59
like when you did your first
6:01
episode, I didn't know that the two of
6:03
you hadn't worked together or didn't know each
6:06
other like personally. So I
6:08
listened and I thought that the chemistry and
6:11
just kind of like the connectivity, was that
6:13
something you guys had to work on a while. Is it just
6:15
natural? Because to me, it felt
6:17
like that you guys had been friends for a while if you listen
6:19
in.
6:20
Yeah.
6:21
Well, so I was lucky enough to
6:23
get the call and was given
6:25
you know, kind of the groundwork
6:28
of what this new podcast idea was
6:30
and that it would be with Will Fredell, and I'm
6:32
like, boy meets World, Yes,
6:36
I will take that meeting.
6:37
Are you kidding me? I know what they are doing
6:40
with you.
6:41
Know, their their podcast, you
6:43
know, I mean, pod meets World is
6:45
giant, I think on
6:48
the I went and did a little bit on their actual
6:50
podcast, and I was the one that let
6:52
them know they actually have a radio advertisement
6:55
that I had been listening. I had heard in
6:57
the morning several times on
7:00
and Kiss at Them, which is the radio station
7:02
I listened to in the morning on my way to work
7:04
or you know, out taking my kids to school,
7:07
things like that, and.
7:09
They didn't even know that it was, which was so
7:11
funny.
7:11
On there we have a radio,
7:14
we have a radio spot.
7:15
She's like, yeah, like
7:17
every morning I hear it.
7:20
And so anyway, I had known about the
7:22
podcast obviously.
7:23
Grew up. I was a Disney kid through and through.
7:26
I watched the channel probably every
7:28
day after school, and so I grew
7:30
up on Boy Meets World and you
7:33
know, loved it, and I've loved how
7:35
they've transitioned that into a podcast
7:37
and being able to go back and one
7:39
of the things that we love doing on the podcast
7:42
is kind of letting the viewers
7:44
dive into the fact
7:46
that we haven't known each other for a long
7:49
time.
7:49
We are getting to know each.
7:50
Other, and through these movies and rewatching
7:53
and getting each other's reactions and
7:55
learning about each other, we've become.
7:57
Friends throughout the process.
7:59
And that was something we were really adamant
8:01
from the beginning is you know, we
8:03
had.
8:03
Only talked a few times and we.
8:05
Met actually face to face at a photo
8:07
shoot, and through that we were talking
8:09
about we wanted to be very organic and
8:12
we weren't going to try to put across that we've
8:14
known each other for years and
8:17
talked about that get to know you process
8:19
should definitely be a part.
8:20
Of the podcast.
8:23
But after the first taping, everyone,
8:25
all the producers from High Heart that we're listening
8:28
in, we're saying, it sounds
8:30
like you guys have known each other for years, like
8:32
your chemistry.
8:33
It was so easy.
8:34
It felt like talking back to
8:37
a frund that I've had for a while
8:39
and you know, still learning
8:41
about him.
8:42
He you know, he's not a big fan of musicals.
8:45
I'm a giant fan of musicals, and so,
8:47
you know, we talk about that in the in
8:50
our podcast of what draws
8:52
us in and you know, what's special
8:54
to us and how we can kind of banter
8:57
back and forth of those kinds of things. And
9:00
he's got a great sense of humor. He's so hilarious.
9:02
He has me cracking up the whole time.
9:06
And it shows that you guys both have a passion
9:09
for the project too. Like when you start talking
9:11
about the films that you're going to
9:13
talk about today, both of you kind of light
9:15
up on the air, like you can hear your voice
9:17
getting excited to share some of the experiences.
9:20
And it's great that you guys have this common passion
9:22
behind the podcast.
9:23
Well it's also you know, just piggybacking off
9:25
of what Sabrina said, you know, Podmets World.
9:28
One of the reasons that people love podmeets World so much
9:30
is because they can tell that we grew up together.
9:32
You know, Daniel Ryder and I have known each other for thirty
9:34
years. It's effortless. We're family
9:37
and we're using that word properly. A lot of people throw
9:39
that word around, but we really are. Sabrina
9:41
and I met and we as we were talking the
9:43
first time, we were like, we can't fake this.
9:46
You can't fake Hey, we've known each
9:48
other forever and this is the way it's going to
9:50
be. It's like, so let's go exactly
9:53
the opposite. Let's let people know we don't
9:55
know each other. Let's let people know, especially
9:57
when it comes to these movies that are movies you watch
9:59
as a kid, we're like ten twelve years
10:01
apart, even a little bit farther. That's night
10:03
and day when it comes to Disney
10:05
Channel and the movies that you watch. So
10:08
my Disney Channel movies and Disney movies that
10:10
I grew up with are different than her Disney Channel
10:12
movies and what she grew up with.
10:14
And so we were like, let's lean
10:16
into that. Let's lean into.
10:17
The getting to know you process because
10:20
everyone people aren't stupid, and and fans
10:22
of podcasts especially aren't stupid, and they.
10:24
Can tell when you're faking it.
10:26
So it's like, we're gonna we're not gonna
10:28
fake this, We're gonna just get to know
10:30
each other.
10:30
The entire time.
10:31
I'm gonna be sometimes the curmudgeon old
10:34
guy going, what.
10:35
The music's too loud? I don't understand this movie,
10:38
and and.
10:38
She's sometimes gonna be going, God, this this
10:40
movie is so old.
10:41
I don't understand that.
10:43
And we wanted that to be what people
10:45
experience. So as we're getting to know each
10:47
other, that's happening.
10:48
More and more.
11:06
Serena, you brought something up that I have to stop down
11:08
on that part about you hearing it on
11:10
Kiss FM. That's actually our secret,
11:12
Sauce at I heart too, is that we've got this massive
11:15
broadcast network to tell people about
11:17
the amazing podcast that we have. So it's
11:19
just built in marketing engine. And so I love the
11:21
fact, like that's
11:23
awesome.
11:25
So it's just.
11:25
Baland exactly how it was.
11:27
I was driving and went, what I
11:29
need to hear this, you know what, I'm like cool,
11:32
So I definitely clicked on
11:35
it, started it subscribed, it worked
11:37
one hundred percent.
11:38
I am like so sold.
11:40
That's great, Sabrina, what was it
11:42
like?
11:43
I think a lot of people would be interested in this growing
11:45
up in the Disney family, Like from an
11:47
insider's perspective, what can you share with us?
11:49
You know, to be because there's this you know, this
11:52
expectation that Disney does things a certain
11:54
way, Like what can you share about that?
11:57
You know, I I love being a part
11:59
of the family. I Disney
12:02
puts out nothing but good messaging.
12:04
And you know, even at a younger age,
12:07
you knew that you were a part of, you
12:09
know, for the Cheetah Girls, we were a part of kind
12:11
of the beginning of a girl power
12:13
movement, you know, just really leaning
12:15
into inspiring young
12:17
girls. But another part
12:20
of my experience was
12:22
before I'd been auditioning, I'd guest starred on
12:25
several different things, you know,
12:27
within the Channel and or on ABC,
12:30
and you walk around the
12:32
stage and you would see
12:34
so many of the young actors that
12:37
were what's called triple threat, so they were they
12:39
weren't just acting, They could dance,
12:41
they could sing. There was just so many of
12:44
them, especially when I joined
12:46
the Channel and at the time Cheetah
12:48
Girls was really the first big.
12:51
Musical that they put on as a d com.
12:53
And yet when you walk around obviously
12:56
the sets, there were so many of them
12:58
that could do well. They were multifacet
13:01
they could do a lot of different things, and it
13:03
was awesome to be at the forefront of
13:06
when they started to really lean in
13:08
and give their channel stars
13:10
opportunities to sing on
13:13
you know, albums like Disney Mania, which
13:15
was a full soundtrack of Disney
13:18
Channel stars that were remaking movies
13:20
from the Disney you know, cartoon
13:23
movies, the classic the actual animated
13:25
movies, and they were redoing them in their
13:27
own way, you know, whether they're making a song
13:29
into a rock song or a fast
13:31
song into a slow song. And
13:34
so that was kind of the beginning of
13:36
all of that. And then it comes to High
13:38
School Musical and now Descendance,
13:40
which, by the way, I've said it so many times,
13:42
I'm such a huge fan of the Descendants
13:44
now.
13:44
And that's from magical rewind
13:46
podcasts.
13:47
Literally I've never watched it before
13:49
and now I'm a giant fan.
13:52
I can't wait to watch all of them. But now
13:54
you're looking at the channel and they have so many
13:56
artists.
13:57
Olivia Rodrigo, I mean, it's
13:59
like saying to know that I was at
14:01
like the beginning part of that. So,
14:05
you know, being a part of the
14:07
Disney Channels like being a part of iHeart
14:09
It's a giant, huge,
14:12
mega machine that just knows how
14:14
to do it right, and that that's one thing
14:17
about the Disney Channel that I will always be appreciative
14:19
that I got a chance to work with a
14:22
company that just nails
14:24
it out of the park every time.
14:25
Was there like training and education? Was it more
14:27
like being part of a university than it was like,
14:30
okay, just this episode was there
14:32
that go to Disney School, Go to Disney
14:34
School?
14:36
And I don't know, did you feel that will as
14:39
you go along you got better? As
14:41
I went along, I would be around other you
14:44
know, channel stars that knew how to do press
14:46
better, knew how to you know, how to walk.
14:49
The red carpet a little bit better.
14:50
But it was kind of trial and air that there just certainly
14:53
wasn't like a sit down school process.
14:55
But I think being around you know, when
14:57
you come across somebody who's been on the channel longer,
15:00
you kind of watch how they do it
15:03
and start sort of get your own
15:05
stride, but you know, learn from each other
15:07
because we were all you know, so many people
15:09
on the channel as you're working are just so young,
15:11
and a lot of times it's like your first big
15:14
thing to do.
15:15
So a question for both of you when you
15:17
have your guests on is it. You know,
15:19
for the Disney does it feel more like a
15:22
fraternity and sorority of like
15:24
friends instead of guests. You call them guests, but
15:26
are they really because it seems like it's a small
15:28
world. Yeah, you know, everybody.
15:30
Knows each other.
15:31
It is.
15:32
It's you know what's funny is is it's there's
15:34
there's two.
15:35
Kind of schools going together, two
15:37
fraternities going together, because you have
15:39
the one that's certainly the Disney family. And
15:42
when you're in that Disney family, it is you
15:44
get the secret handshake and it's like you're going
15:46
from one fraternity to another across the country,
15:48
but you're still you've you've gone through the same
15:51
thing, so you know each other. But then on top
15:53
of that, you also have the added fraternity
15:55
of being a child actor.
15:58
So there's there's kind of the double
16:01
Hey, we've been there, we know what you've
16:03
been through, good and bad. Because there's
16:06
parts of being a child actor that are the greatest
16:08
thing you could ever have in your life.
16:10
It is phenomenal.
16:11
There's parts that are really really terrible,
16:13
and then there's everything in between. So when
16:16
you're dealing with people that have some of
16:18
the same life experiences, even if they're younger
16:20
than you, older than you. There is that kind
16:22
of winking and nod of hey, you know, I've been
16:24
there. I mean William Daniels, who played mister
16:27
Feenie on Boy Me This World, going to be ninety seven
16:29
years old, he still gives us
16:31
the kind of hey, I was a child actor.
16:33
I've been there. You know, he'll say that to us.
16:35
So that's something that it does. It bonds
16:37
you. And the second you bring
16:40
on any of these guests.
16:41
We've talked to people from Brink, We've talked to people
16:43
from the Descendants, We've talked to people. I mean, it doesn't matter
16:45
who we bring on. You're starting from
16:47
a place of I know.
16:49
What you've been through. I know it.
16:50
It's like I know how much fun
16:52
it is. I know this kind of the sum of the stories
16:55
you have. So let's get into it. So
16:57
there is that kind of camaraderie that's instantly
16:59
built in when these guests come home.
17:01
Yeah, you can feel it. There feels like just
17:04
a natural camaraderie. Two quick things,
17:06
One question.
17:07
For you Will, and then we'll bring.
17:09
A question to both how different
17:11
is it rewatching and
17:13
talking about films now at a different stage
17:16
in life than when you went through it, because when you were talking
17:18
about My Day with the President's Daughter, you're
17:20
like, I haven't seen that film in like years,
17:23
but it was such a big film for you. How
17:25
different is it rewatching and now
17:28
than what you thought, you know when you saw it ten fifteen
17:30
years ago.
17:31
Yeah, I had not seen My Day with the President's Daughter,
17:33
I think since it came out or close to it.
17:35
So that was ninety seven, so almost thirty years.
17:38
It's strange. I always tell people
17:40
it's like watching It's
17:42
like you have whole movies, but there
17:45
are hole movies of you that everybody
17:47
got to see. So when you see you
17:49
know, when you watch your whole movies, your birthday
17:51
parties when you're eight nine years old, you don't remember
17:54
the party, you don't remember even the video,
17:56
but you might have memories of what president
17:58
you got. I mean, there's so that's what it's like. Watching these
18:00
movies is or watching Boy Meets World. When
18:02
we do that, you don't necessarily
18:05
remember the shooting, you don't remember the episode,
18:07
but you might remember something that happened on the set that
18:09
day.
18:09
You might remember, oh.
18:11
Yeah, that's right, that guest star and I ended up going
18:13
out one time, we had a date or we had dinner,
18:16
So it brings back something to
18:18
where then it opens a whole new line of memories.
18:21
It's it's very interesting to
18:23
see I have home movies from the time
18:25
I started professionally acting at ten years
18:28
old to now that
18:30
I can turn on and stream whenever I
18:32
want, and it's really kind of an.
18:33
Interesting, interesting experience.
18:36
Yeah, and I think, really, I think that's
18:38
definitely something that our podcast
18:41
is really a little bit different for
18:43
us because we have our own experiences
18:46
like that, So we have a little bit more
18:48
intel when we bring those guests on to ask
18:50
them, like, we know, other stuff
18:52
happening on backstage, you know, what was
18:54
this like, or when you were filming at that you
18:57
know location, or you know Will
18:59
talking about well, on our first
19:01
episode, he talks about how exciting he was,
19:03
how excited he.
19:04
Was to work with the giant actor.
19:06
So when we know that someone else has done
19:08
that, you know, we
19:10
asked that question, you know, whether it was in that
19:12
movie or not, because that we
19:15
know from experience when it was our
19:17
time, how big it was for
19:19
us in our career at the moment,
19:21
what we learned from it. So I think
19:24
with our podcast, we get to bring
19:26
that special element versus
19:28
it just being rewatching the movies,
19:30
maybe having a guest on kind of going
19:32
through it, but to not really have that experience
19:35
yourself. That's something that I feel is
19:37
a little just extra sparkle that we bring
19:39
to our podcast.
19:40
And the one thing Disney does almost better than anybody
19:43
else is no matter when
19:45
you watch one of their movies, you're
19:47
gonna get something different out of it. So if
19:49
you're eight years old watching a movie, you're
19:51
gonna get one thing. If you're fifteen, you're gonna get
19:54
something else. If you're twenty five, you're gonna get something else.
19:56
If you're forty seven, you're gonna get something else.
19:58
So every time you watch these
20:00
movies or these TV shows that Disney is putting
20:02
out, it changed. When I was
20:05
watching Boy Meets World back in the day,
20:07
I was identifying with my character and Corey
20:09
because they are closest in age. When I'm watching
20:11
them now, I'm identifying with the parents. Eventually,
20:14
god willing, I'm gonna be old enough to then be identifying
20:17
with mister Feenie. You just everything
20:19
you watch your you're watching from
20:21
the generation that that you are at
20:23
the time, and that's one thing that he does
20:25
almost better than anybody else. So I
20:27
had never seen these d coms. So
20:29
now I'm watching through the eyes of the parents as opposed
20:32
to watching eyes of the kids.
20:33
It's or there's things that you you
20:35
pick up on when we're watching Brink. I'm I'm
20:38
asking, why is that kid's helmet
20:40
not locked in? Where is the safety patrol?
20:43
You know?
20:43
And it brings like a funny element
20:45
because you're you're thinking and I
20:48
probably never noticed. And if I did
20:50
notice when I was watching it back in the day, I
20:52
probably thought it was cool. Now I'm
20:54
like, somebody get on that kid
20:56
and buck his freaking helpt, you
20:58
know. So it is those kinds
21:00
of things that add a little bit of a funny twist
21:03
to it because we are seeing it and it's totally
21:05
different set of eyes this time around.
21:07
Hey, last question, just because we're running
21:09
out of time and see you guys can answer this one,
21:11
either one of you or both scripted
21:14
versus unscripted. You've done both,
21:16
like your thoughts and preferences,
21:19
Like I'm just curious for somebody that grew
21:21
up that we know you from a scripted world, but now
21:23
you've played an unscripted like, I'd love
21:25
to hear your thoughts.
21:28
I'll go first because I Will's got so
21:30
much more experience than I do.
21:31
This is super new for me on the podcast
21:34
world. I love it.
21:36
I first of.
21:37
All, love that I'm in my own
21:39
home and I'm able to not I don't have.
21:41
To drive all the way to LA That part
21:43
is amazing.
21:45
But I feel really free and able
21:47
to express my thoughts
21:49
with my opinions.
21:51
Keep it fun, keep it light.
21:52
That's how I am, you know, super laid
21:54
back. I will stay differently
21:57
on Unscripted. When I was on Dancing with the
21:59
Stars, I love that part
22:01
so much because I was on like a competition
22:03
show. I felt really guarded
22:05
because that was also the first time
22:08
I did the show was when they first started
22:10
having chat forums and
22:12
I was dumb enough to go in one and check
22:14
it out. And you know, what I
22:16
would say on camera seemed a
22:18
little bit more competitive than what I wanted
22:20
it to come across, you know, things like that. So I
22:22
felt really guarded here, especially
22:25
because there is no competition. We are
22:27
just here to have fun and and you
22:29
know, bring back the incredible
22:32
memories.
22:33
I feel so free and able to
22:35
really just kind of be myself on camera.
22:38
I obviously love acting, That's what got
22:40
me in the industry. I love petraying a character.
22:42
But I'm having the time
22:44
of my life doing this, and I'm so thankful
22:47
that my Heart's given me this opportunity because
22:49
I feel like I've been doing this like
22:52
I've that I found a niche that I never
22:54
realized I would love so much.
22:56
That's great.
22:57
Anything you would add to that, well, script it is
22:59
a great way to disappear into
23:01
another character. Unscripted is a great
23:03
way to disappear more into
23:05
yourself.
23:06
That's how I would say it.
23:08
Nice see you look at that.
23:11
I felt like you had prepared for that. You didn't even
23:13
know you didn't even know what the question was going to be. But I hope
23:15
that's pretty good. Listen. Really enjoyed
23:18
the conversation with both of you today,
23:20
looking forward to future episodes. Thank
23:22
you so much for joining us, and for everybody
23:24
that was able to join and listen in today.
23:26
Thank you, and we'll see you again next week.
23:28
Thanks everybody.
