2 Timothy 4:1-4 (CSB)

I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and because of his appearing and his kingdom: Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.

Explanation:

Our passage today is one of Paul’s final letters to Timothy, a young pastor. Writing from prison, Paul is encouraging Timothy to continue to preach the word of God no matter opposition he faces. Paul is alerting Timothy to recognize that there will be times when others will question his teaching and even manipulate Scripture to fit their own beliefs. Paul reminds him to use the tools of correction, criticism, and encouragement while having love and patience with his audience. He warns that there will be a time when people will only listen to teachers that delight their ear and speak of pleasures that do not offend.

Doesn’t this sound a lot like our world today? Everyone wants to listen to what makes them feel comfortable. No one wants to be questioned about their actions, and accountability is out the door. Wise advice is considered a thing of the past, and people gravitate towards whatever they feel makes their life easy. Everyone has their own beliefs. The church is no longer considered important, and if the church goer feels offended, they just move on. Our culture of athletes, celebrities, politicians, and social media influencers push the current trends, and false prophets show up whenever there is a world crisis.

We as Christians, however, must act different. We are called to a higher standard by God to live a life that causes people to want what we have: a real relationship with Jesus. The way we talk, act, work, and play matters. Our friends, neighbors, co-workers, and family members are thirsty for the real truth. They need God’s truth that comes from His Word, and we should be prepared to speak the gospel.

Truths about God’s Word:

- It is still relevant today and does not need to be updated

- His Word never changes and is always right

- It never contradicts and says what is true

- It is alive and judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart (Hebrews 4:12)

- Must be the highest authority in our life

Action step:

1. Reflect on who you usually listen to when you are hurting. Have you ever sought advice from people you knew would agree with you? Or are you searching for and willing to listen to the truth?

2. When do you feel the pull to do whatever makes you feel good, ignoring any consequences? What steps can you take today to help you not fall into this temptation?

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,Thank You that You are so understanding and always forgiving. Help me to recognize when I fall from hearing Your word and truth. Protect me from leaning towards my own understanding, and lead me back to Your ways. I want to always follow You. Show me how I can be more like Jesus in my actions!Amen
