Episode 18 of the Nielsen Experience Podcast features Marcus McConnell, our vice president (VP) of Technology, based in Columbia, Maryland.Marcus was originally part of Arbitron, a company that Nielsen acquired in 2013, and has since held many different roles on our Technology teams. He currently leads the global development strategy for our Resonance platforms as the VP of Technology. He also sits on our diversity council and is the co-lead of the Mid-Atlantic chapter of our employee resource group, Sustaining Active Black Leadership and Empowerment (SABLE).In this episode, we explore Marcus’ experiences as a person of color in technology, as well as his involvement in Nielsen's diversity and inclusion programs. Marcus also shares his passion for black history and the African Americans who have inspired and motivated him to succeed in his career.“I think the cool thing about Nielsen is that it has a true focus on diversity and inclusion. In the tech space, there’s still some challenges, but I think that we’re trying to tackle it at the grassroots by talking to the universities and doing a lot with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). STEM is a national initiative, and I see Nielsen doing a lot to be active in that. I also look at it not just from a particular ethnicity like mine, but I look at it from all groups. We have proven that diversity and inclusion is a financial benefit, and now people know that there’s money at stake, and they can possibly be losing out.”The Nielsen Experience Podcast is a collection of stories about what it’s like to work at Nielsen—a global, independent measurement and data company—straight from our employees.
