Alright, hello

0:07

everyone, and welcome to the first

0:09

edition of NFL Draft

0:12

Trip will Take First edition

0:14

twenty twenty four. We

0:16

are, as always sponsored by UPMC.

0:19

I'm Mike Pursuita, joined as always by

0:21

Dale Lawley and Matt Williamson.

0:23

We've been doing this for a while now, discussing

0:26

an upcoming draft and how we think the pieces

0:29

may fall into place. But we're doing things

0:31

a little bit different this year. And one of

0:33

the differences the opinions we are

0:35

about to express, the wrong opinions

0:38

that Matt and Dale are going to provide

0:40

and the insight that will be forthcoming from

0:42

me. It's all our own opinions.

0:44

We are not trumpeting with the

0:46

Steelers may or may not do. We are not,

0:48

for these purposes, affiliated with the Steelers.

0:51

This is three guys sitting

0:53

around talking NFL Draft, so fellas,

0:55

welcome back, ready

0:57

to get at it. Let's just shout that they had us back

1:01

our upsets in every draft. We're

1:03

gonna start today with our mock

1:06

first round, and Dale, you're on the

1:08

screen first, so let's take a look

1:10

at your picks one through ten. Anything

1:13

on here that you had to wrestle with

1:15

or that you think is I don't know, especially

1:18

enlightening.

1:19

Yeah, I think the first five guys are

1:22

pretty chalky when you start looking at

1:24

mock drafts. Whatever order those guys go in.

1:26

To me, I think one of the real wild

1:29

cards in this draft goes at

1:31

six tight end Brock Bowers,

1:33

because typically you don't see tight ends go that

1:35

high. But you can't just look at him as a tight

1:38

end. You have to look at him as a pass catcher. And

1:40

so to me, you know, I know

1:43

the Giants that may not be a screaming

1:45

need for the Giants another tight end, but you

1:47

have to look at him like he's just a big wide receiver.

1:49

One of the caveats that we decided on before

1:52

doing this was we weren't including potential

1:54

trades. So that being the case,

1:56

I think the Bears are, you

1:59

know, for our purposes, not trading their quarterback

2:02

and not trading the pick. So if they

2:04

end up with Justin Fields throwing, who

2:06

better to be on the receiving end than Marvin

2:09

Harrison junior guys, he is my head

2:11

and shoulders best receiver available.

2:14

And that's just the old eye test. Just watch

2:16

some college football on Saturdays.

2:19

What conference did he play?

2:20

He played the Big Ten Conference. Yeah, just checking

2:23

Drake May is my second quarterback

2:25

to the Commanders, and I like him better than the other

2:27

two. I might be a little bit on

2:29

an island regarding that, but based

2:32

on our no trade scenario and Harrison

2:34

going one, I think the Atlanta Falcons would

2:36

love this because Jade Daniels of LSU

2:39

would fall down to the Falcons at

2:41

number eight and the rest of it.

2:43

As you said, Dale Chalking, Matt, let's take a

2:45

look at what you've got cooked up for picks

2:48

one through ten.

2:49

Yeah, you mentioned the Falcons at eight, and this

2:51

might be a little controversial as we sit here

2:53

in the middle of February, but I

2:55

think JJ McCarthy stock could really be

2:57

on the rise in the media circles when

3:00

he goes to the Combine. Really really

3:02

good athlete, phenomenal

3:04

in terms of you know, interviews, leadership,

3:06

all that type of thing. But I do think the Falcons

3:09

are going to be aggressive with the quarterback spot. So I didn't

3:11

know exactly what to do with them.

3:12

All right, Well I have. I mean, I think Terry

3:14

and Arnold is the best cornerback

3:17

in this draft. I think he's really good at

3:19

twelve. Then you know, I got bow Nicks

3:21

going to the Denver Broncos,

3:23

and I think the reason

3:25

I went with that, I think he kind of fits into

3:27

what Sean Payton does offensively, getting the ball

3:29

out quick, a lot of the shorter stuff. You

3:32

know, It's what he ran with Drew

3:34

Brees to a certain degree. So I

3:36

just I don't know if he's the next best quarterback,

3:39

but I think that's where a good landing spot

3:42

for him. And then you know you're looking

3:44

on down there love Jackson Powers

3:46

Johnson the center out of Oregon,

3:48

but he goes at seventeen, and then that means

3:50

the Steelers get Cooper dejen do

3:53

everything, cornerback, safety return

3:55

guy.

3:56

And you said do everything. You are not exaggerating.

3:59

What conference did he play?

4:00

The Big Ten Conference?

4:02

Yeah?

4:02

I saw too much of that guy in Iowa

4:04

City. Mike pursuits picks eleven

4:07

through twenty out jump right down to the bottom. I have

4:09

Jackson Powers Johnson coming to Pittsburgh

4:11

with the twentieth overall pick, and

4:15

Dale, I'm with you on bow Nicks. I

4:17

got him going to the Raiders at thirteen.

4:19

You had him to Denver at twelve.

4:22

But I think he's gonna go higher than people think.

4:25

I think they're gonna love what they see of

4:27

them in the workout stage of this. And

4:30

he's got some ridiculous statistics and

4:32

I think he has the size and

4:34

the experience. Quinnon Mitchell

4:37

really interesting player to me. I got him going to

4:39

Denver at number twelve, one

4:42

of, if not the best cornerback available. Matt,

4:45

what do you have in this particular third of the

4:47

first round.

4:48

Yeah, I have Geiton, who you had gon fourteen

4:51

going to the Steelers. He looks like a left

4:53

tackle, he moves like a left tackle. He actually looks

4:55

like a power forward. He was really impressed with the Senior

4:57

Bowl. He's really only played on the right side.

5:00

Steers will figure that out. Powers

5:02

Johnson's a guy we've brought up a couple times. I

5:04

think he'd really stabilize that Jacksonville

5:06

line. And then Byron Murphy I wanted to

5:08

mention too. He's an extreme athlete. And

5:11

you got to realize Seattle just you know signed

5:13

or hired, you know, Baltimore's defensive coordinator.

5:16

They won versatile, explosive defensive

5:18

front guys. So I think that would be a good fit with the Seahawks.

5:21

Still one more third to get to

5:23

as we continue, taking a

5:25

projection at the first round at Dale,

5:28

your picks twenty one through thirty two.

5:30

Yeah, I mean you start looking here and you're gonna get

5:32

to Obviously, Cleveland

5:34

does not have a first round draft pick

5:37

because they traded that away. But then you look at

5:39

the Baltimore Ravens and they take Graham

5:41

Barton here at the thirtieth pick,

5:44

and they get some offensive line

5:46

issues there. Some of their guys are getting

5:48

a little bit old Zeitler, They're one

5:50

of their guards is a free agent upcoming.

5:53

So I think it makes a lot of sense for them to take a guy

5:56

in Barton who could play all over that line

5:58

for them and just give them a little more versatility

6:00

there. And you know some of these

6:03

other picks you mentioned geton.

6:05

I have him going to Dallas. We know Jerry

6:07

Jones loves those Oklahoma guys. That would

6:09

make some sense there. And then one

6:11

of the other guys, Lad McConkie,

6:14

going to Buffalo.

6:15

That's a little at tension getting.

6:16

Yeah, I think he's going

6:19

to maybe go a little bit

6:21

higher than some of the draftnicks have him going round.

6:23

They have him going early second round. I think he can sneak

6:25

into that first round. He's really good and

6:28

just he just does

6:31

everything well and I like to like

6:33

why to solve him at the Senior Bowl.

6:35

Dale, you and I both have the same pick at

6:37

thirty second overall, Keon Coleman

6:39

going to the Chiefs. Really

6:41

good athlete, played basketball as

6:44

well as football at Michigan State before he went

6:46

to Florida State.

6:46

And he came to his census and transferred

6:49

right there.

6:49

Is I think if he'd had gotten to play

6:51

in the college playoff, there'd be a whole lot more buzz

6:53

about him than there is right now. But he's

6:56

a big receiver who's incredibly

6:59

athlete. Nothing really

7:01

surprising in my twenty one

7:04

through thirty one. I

7:06

have a degene going a little bit lower

7:08

than you guys at twenty five,

7:11

but for the most part, and Matt He's

7:13

will probably confirm the same. We've basically got

7:15

the same names here, just in different order.

7:17

Yeah, and actually with mine, I want to

7:20

have the same spot with Baltimore.

7:21

D got a twenty eighth.

7:23

Yeah, I mean I want to mention that one too. Diggs's

7:25

production really fell in the second

7:27

half of the season, gave Davis is a free

7:29

agent to be, so that makes a lot of sense to me. Well,

7:32

you and I both had Darius Robinson going to the

7:34

Ravens. They won versatility in

7:36

that front. They want explosiveness, and he plays

7:39

all up and down the line.

7:40

He's the first guy to me. It will get to a number

7:42

of these guys. But you look at him and you say, that

7:44

guy's a blank a raven, and that

7:46

guy's a raving that particular

7:48

guy. But there will be some other players where we

7:51

think, oh, so and so he should be a packer or whatever.

7:53

Yeah, that guy's a Raven.

7:54

I think, and then position, you know, positionally,

7:57

at twenty nine, I feel really confident that that's

7:59

going to be a cornerback. And there's a lot of them in this

8:01

class that fit the mold. I'm not sure

8:03

which one will end up at twenty nine, but they

8:05

need a corner to put in extacidon.

8:07

That's gonna do it for us. For this first

8:10

edition of the NFL Draft

8:12

Triple take Matt Williamson,

8:14

Dale Lawley, and me, Mike Pursuda. We're

8:16

gonna be cranking this stuff out between

8:19

now and the actual NFL Draft, which is

8:21

scheduled for the end of April. In

8:23

Detroit, So you're gonna want to keep

8:25

it here for well, just too

8:27

many updates and insightful pieces

8:29

of content to mention, But just

8:32

keep checking back with Steelers dot com

8:34

and all of your Steelers social media

8:36

platforms and you'll find out what we think

8:38

as the twenty twenty four NFL

8:41

Draft approaches for Matt

8:43

and Dale Mike. This has been the NFL
