background music: http://ccmixter.org/files/AlexBeroza/17253Scriptit could be the Christmas carol that got a reimagining from a popular artist or the decade old classic getting a revival with a new, modern twist. It could even be the song you really want to learn that teaches you new techniques. How ever you experience it, one person or another has covered a song. In this 5 minute podcast i will try to understand and uncover the reasons why we are so obsessed with covers. I will be interviewing 2 experts on this topic and asking them their experience with covers and how it impacts the music industry from people learning to pros.To begin I interviewed someone who has been playing a few instruments for a number of years. So your play music as a hobby, what caught you interest and convinced you to start? Well I started a number of years ago and what started off my interest was really just a interest in songs and wanting to learn parts of those songs. From there my interest only grew as I learned techniques that helped me learn songs and find out how complex and interesting other pieces of music are.what do you find interesting about doing covers? What draws you to learn covers of songs rather than creating your own original song?Covers can be a great learning tool for a new musician. They can teach you key techniques and common chords while also allowing the musician to stay interested and not get bored. For me playing a instrument would just not be the same if I hadn’t learnt from playing songs I liked, I wouldn’t have been able to apply those techniques as easily if I had just sat in front of someone hitting the same chords till I had learned them by heart and it wouldn’t have the same enjoymentDo you feel like you add your own twist on a song when you do a cover of the song?well, when learning a song I might change to different octaves that are more comfortable to play and I might add a rift here and there that suits the song I'm learning. So yeh in a way when I cover a song I will add my own take on it.A lot of new songs now are seen to be very similar covers or variations on older songs. Would you agree with this?I would say that as the industry has gotten older it is harder to do anything without it being similar in style to something someone has already done. That being said only parts of music are similar when broken down the piece as a whole is original and that is still true to this day. So no I wouldn’t say that a lot of new songs are covers or variations.what impact do you feel cover songs have on the industry?I feel covers have large impact on the music industry, tho I do believe that its not a negative impact I believe it adds more life and allows a look back at older songs in the industry. I interviewed someone who has recently started to learn a instrument and is learning not from lessons but from songs they enjoy through online covers and guides. So you started playing a instrument recently. How are you finding it? Well I started in a way most people I know didn’t, by learning songs I like and what has kept my interest is a interest in finding new songs I enjoy. Q: what do you find interesting about doing covers? What draws you to learn covers of songs rather than creating your own original song?Covers have been a really useful tool for my learning, its really kept my interest and taught me a lot of what I know right now. As well as teaching me a lot I've actually discovered new music which share the same techniques as other song I like. As for what draws me to doing to covers, I guess just the ability to play the song I love is reason enough.
